Integrated Development Environment (IDE) Usability Survey

Drs. Kline and Seffah of the Human-Centered Software Engineering Group at Concordia University in Montreal are recruiting participants to complete a Web survey about their experiences using IDEs, such as Sun Java Studio, IBM VisualAge, or Microsoft Visual Studio. Of special interest is the usability of IDEs as described by software development professionals. The URL for this brief (about 10 minutes) and anonymous survey is
http://rana.cs.concordia.ca/humancase/
This survey is part of the HumanCASE project, which is aimed at making CASE tools more developer-centric. Examples of work in this area can be downloaded from
http://hci.cs.concordia.ca/www/hcse/projects/humancase/
Thank you for your participation. (With apologies for cross-postings on related Sun forums.)

Thanks

• Adobe Muse a IDE(Integrated development environment) or a CMS(Content management system)...

Hi guys , I wanted to know if Adobe Muse is a IDE(Integrated development environment) or is it a CMS(Content management system)...
Fast responses will be highly appreciated...
Thanks in advance...

Hello
Adobe Muse is not a CMS, but you can publish adobe Muse site on Business catalyst, and Business catalyst is a CMS. You can integrate BC CMS features on your Muse site.
Please check this video for Muse: Advanced CMS Integration | Adobe Muse Feature Tour | Adobe TV
Also watch this video for adding BC features to Muse site http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-business-catalyst/adding-business-catalyst-features-to-you r-muse-sites/
Hope this helps !

• Creating a IDE(Integrated Development Environment)

What I want its a way to create a IDE(Integrated Development Environment). I type a word (example:typed private from JAVA code) and this word became a color word.
What is the best way to do this?
PS:sorry for my spell, Im from Brazil.

Abadacus,
See www.jext.org--it has a free java IDE, with source code, much of it from JEdit, another free java editor.

• Looking for Integrated Development Environment

I am new to Mac programming and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good IDE (Integrated Development Environment)? I tried downloading a version of XCode but it works only for OS 10.4 and I am using 10.3.9. Also, I ordered the book "Beginning Mac OSX Programming" by Trent and McCormack. Is it a good book to start with, or did I waste my money? Thanks in advance.

I have that book and I've found it useful. It provides a basic introduction to Xcode and a number of the languages available. However, if you want to learn a particular language, then you may need a language-specific book.
Have you any particular language in mind that you are wanting to learn/use?
Also, is there any reason for not upgrading to 10.4.9 (which is the latest version of the OS)? At least with the latest release, you will have many bugs fixed and the current discussions will all relate to any new ones.

• Which IDE(integrated development environment)

Hi friends,
I need some Information from all of you. If you are using any IDE
except (iPlanet Application builder, Forte for Java, jBuilder and
webgain) for development of J2ee Application let me know. It would be
great help for me. You can reply me on [email protected] .
Thanks

• Looking for best practice on J2EE development environment

Hi,
We are starting to develope with J2EE. We are looking for best practice on J2EE development environment. Our concern is mainly on code sharing and deployment.
Thanks, Charles

To support "code sharing" you need an integrated source code control system. Several options are out there but CVS (https://www.cvshome.org/) is a nice choice, and it's completely free and it runs on Windows, Linux, and most UNIX variants.
Your next decision is on IDE and application server. These are usually from a single "source". For instance, you can choose Oracle's JDeveloper and Deploy to Oracle Application Server; or go with free NetBeans IDE and Jakarta Tomcat; or IBM's WebSphere and their application server. Selection of IDE and AppServer will likely result in heated debates.

• Development Environment

I need to build a multi-tier java web application (JSP, Serlvets, EJB, JDBC, Oracle), but I've been away from Java for some time. I believe I should deploy onto the J2EE server, but I'm confused as to which development environment I should be using.
Do I need J2EE SDK 1.3.1? Or Sun ONE Studio 5? Or both?
Also should I seperately install Apache, Tomcat, and mod_jserv on my development machine?
Thanks,
Todd

You will want the basic java environment for development. That would be the JSE1.4.2 (latest) ...but is it still not recommended to stick with 1.3.1_07 for mass public consumption ? Not to sure, but the point is ...you need the standard 'Java Install'. J2EE SDK 1.3.1 is an additional package you will need, yes ...for all the extra enterprise classes required by your particular endeavor.
You won't need Apache or mod_jserv ...because you say you want EJB's. Tomcat and Apache standard stuff will run Servlets and JSP's ...but aren't a full blown application server ...and it is sounding like that's what you want. Be sure of what you want though ...EJB is a steep learning curve ...like straight up. As a solution they can even be the 'wrong thing to use' entirely and deciding if that's really what you need can require at least a certain degree of expertise to determine.
However, if you really want an application server for EJB deployment ...that entirely depends on how much money you have to spend. Weblogic, Websphere are a couple of the $$$ names. But (ding) JBOSS is my favorite choice ...its free and actually the number two choice in the market right now ...go figure. It has a version that comes integrated with Apache Tomcat ...and is a powerful little beastie for sure. You want to steer clear of the J2ee server reference implementation Sun offers. Its just that ...a reference. It won't take you far and can't be used for production (i.e. can't serve remotely). So you might as well get right into the real thing since the subtle gotcha's are only going to set you back unless you get the real thing.
You can get an IDE if you like ...but the command line works nicely too in all reality. Search IDE on these forums, along with APPLICATION SERVER and I am sure you will come up with a ton of links to various vendors.
First off ...go get the JSE1.[whatever] and the J2EE 1.3.1 and get those up and running. After that you will be ready to set up your application server ...Rome wasn't built in a night. I admire your confidence. Need a consultant? Just kidding ...no I'm not ...yes I am.
Good luck.

• Install AD / SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 on a single server as Development Environment

Hi All,
I'm planning to prepare a SharePoint 2013 development environment. The current idea is to install Domain controller, SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 all on a single server. Even though this is for development purposes,
would there be any limitations specially when it comes to SP 2013 functionalities according to your experience?
Some articles i referred.

Hi
i understand this is a sandbox environment but you should be able to install everything.

I overcame the above issue by changing index.html to index.jsp, but now i am facing another issue as shown below:

• Problem installing Adhoc version to iPhone and iPad - Development Environment Is - Adobe Flash CS6

Hi,
I have successfully submitted 2 versions of the application. There are 2 different versions for iPad and iPhone separately. These were developed using Adobe Flash CS6 and AIR SDK - 4.0.0.1628. The category is Lifestyle and app is free.
Now I wanted to add new feature of push notification to both iPad and iPhone versions. I have successfully tested the development version with development profiles and certificates over iPad and iPhone.
Before submitting the app to Appstore I was trying to test the Adhoc version with production environment and profiles but application was not installing to the iPad, it is the same iPad that is used for development. But after searching forums and other help Adhoc version was not installed to iPad the solutions that were tried are as under:
1. Create new certificates and profile for Adhoc
2. Change Entitlement tags in Application xml file
3. Remove existing profiles from iPad to avoid error.
4. Update OS version of iPad to 8.1
But once I try to last point - [4] even development version is not installing. Because there are no provision profiles installed.
Can you please help/guide me how to fix it? I need to test both development and Adhoc versions on the iPad and iPhone.
Some more information -->>
// Development Entitlement key - it is working fine with development environment
<Entitlements><![CDATA[
<key>aps-environment</key>
<string>production</string>
]]></Entitlements>
//Adhoc Entitlement key - it is not working application does not gets installed, icon turns dark and keeps saying installing once you hit the App icon. I am trying to install app using iTunes, after publishsing in Flash CS6 for Adhoc.
<Entitlements><![CDATA[
<key>get-task-allow</key>
<false/>
<key>aps-environment</key>
<string>production</string>
]]></Entitlements>
// If I try installing using install application to connected device after publishing then the error is:
Device Error: Please check if there is enough space on the device.
But I have enough space on iPhone that I am testing. Remember development version is installing successfully and working fine for notifications.
Thanks
PS: I have also posted the same issue under AIR development but there is no reply -

Resolved for iPhone check here

But iPad after updating to iOs8.1 still not installing even development build. I have changed SDK to latest one 15.0.0.302, any ideas?

• Development environment set up

Hi,
I just want to set up a development environment for ISA and was going through the Dev and Extension Guide. I have the following questions that I need help with:
a) What version of Developer workplace is required? Can I use the latest or have to stick with 2004s only for ISA development? I see there are two more later versions NW 7.0 SR3 Developer Workplace and NW 7.0 EHP1 SR1 Developer Workplace.
b) Do I need to have NWDI? I only intend to make changes on my laptop and test it. The server version will remain AS-IS.
Any inputs are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

Thanks for you answers. I am trying to install the developer workplace on Windows 7 (64 bit OS) with SQL server 2008.
I get the following error
Running msiexec failed with return code 1603: Fatal error during installation.
Commandline was msiexec.exe /norestart /L sapmmcX86u.log /i sapmmcX86u.msi /qn
I check some sdn posts on this error but the solutions refer to updating MSI installer on Windows XP. no solution to windows 7
Any ideas...?
Regards,
Reid

• Correctly setting up a C++ development environment with clang++

I'm going to reinstall Arch x64 soon, as the current installation was not done properly, and I have some doubts on how I should set up my development environment correctly.
My compiler of choice is clang++ 3.4 SVN and my IDE of choice is QTCreator git.
I currently get and install those manually, but I may use the AUR in my next Arch installation.
Anyway, the issue is that QTCreator and other applications use /usr/bin/c++ by default, which is g++.
To solve (horribly) the issue, I changed my /usr/bin/c++ to an executable bash script that fowards the arguments to clang++.
This lead to issues such as warnings and errors not being catched by the IDE.
My question is: what is the correct way to set up a clang++ development environment?
How can I set clang++ as the default compiler for everything except AUR packages?
If you use clang++ as your main compiler, how did you solve this issue?

The canonical method of setting your (C++) compiler is to set the CXX environment variable.
Searching Google for "qtcreator compiler" yields things like: https://qt-project.org/doc/qtcreator-2. … hains.html

• Flex 3 and Java - Integrated Development on Eclipse

I am new to flex as well as to eclipse. I have downloaded
Adobe Flex Builder 3.0 and installed it. I want to use java at the
back-end, but I don't have Java perspective option in eclipse.
Therefore, I am currently using 2 IDE(s), one is
flex-builder, and other is Eclipse for Web tool platform
(eclipse-jee-europa-winter-win32.zip).
Is there anyway that I can benefit integrated development of
Flex and java using same IDE?

I wouldn't try it really... it's not worth the issues you'd
probably run into and the work of getting it setup, if it's even
possible. I just run Eclipse and FB separate. If you have a gig of
ram you should be fine doing this I think.
If you *really* want to get rid of one, you can use the Flex
plugin for Eclipse, but I've heard people complain about it not
playing nice with Java.

• Where is the built in Java runtime and development environment in my MAC???

I keep reading that my macintosh (dual G5 with OSX 10.4.10) came with a fully configured and ready-to-use Java runtime and development environment, however I cannot find, nor do I know how to open it. Doe anyone know how to open this up? thanks so much!

Your JRE should already be configured so that when you double-click a self-executing jar or open a page with an Applet it will run.
Your compiler (javac) should be available through your sheel in your terminal application.
If none of this helps you (and it may well not) you may want to consider installing an IDE. Eclipse for example has a Mac OS version, I am sure there are others but I do not develop on Mac so I can't tell you about them.
