Intel iMac - which items are user replaceable?

I'm a hand's on type of guy and should anything go awry or wear out on my Intel iMac I'd like to replace it myself, if possible. Packing it up and shipping it off with all my personal data still on that hard disk is a very difficult decision to make.
What hardware items on the Intel iMac are user replaceable? If my SuperDrive goes out can I replace it? How about my hard drive?
Thanks,
Hudson

True, but if a hard drive goes, I don't see why it would be any MORE hard to crack open the case on an Intel iMac versus an iMac G5 and replace it - according to Apple, they have the same exteriors. That's what it really comes down to: Opening the case, removing the damaged part and replacing it with a new one. I don't see how it would be beneficial to make the user carry the computer to an Apple Retail Store, wait in line, and wait to get it replaced by a Genius when only one model ago, a model that Apple claims is externally the same, the user can do this themselves.

  • How to tell which items are in iTunes library on disc but not in program library?

    I made a mistake the other night and I deleted some items from my iTunes library ... but NOT from disc.
    These items are still in my 65 gig iTunes library on disc.  Somewhere.
    I'd like to re-add these songs.  Is there any way to tell which songs in the iTunes library on disc are not in the iTunes program library?
    I don't want to have to add all 65 gigs again and then remove all the duplicates
    thanks!

    You should try dragging some files already in the library into iTunes to see what happens. I just did, and the new iTunes 10.6 seems to be ignoring them. I then made a copy of a file already in the library, and I added both it and the original by dragging and dropping. Only the new file was added. There was no warning about duplicates in either test. So you may be able to drag your whole library back into iTunes.
    For when you do want to determine what files on disk aren't in the iTunes library or vice versa, here's one way to do it (if there's an easier way, I'm all ears):
    Export your library as a playlist to a text file.
    Use a program that can recursively list all your files on disk as full paths and save its output to a text file.
    Load the into a decent text editor. I use Notepad++. Then use a regexp search/replace to tidy up the files so that both consist of one fully qualified filename per line.
    Sort the files.
    Diff the files and examine the differences.
    I can do both 4 and 5 in Notepad++.

  • How can i see which items are taking up the most disk space

    I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 with a 20GB hard drive. I'm currently using 15GB. I have tried searching through my hard drive to see which programs are taking up the most space. When I add up the totals of the various folders, etc., it's not 15GB worth. I feel like some items must be nested somehow, making them difficult to find. Is there some way to search your computer by size of items? I know that opening the hard drive and clicking on the size tab will sort things according to size. However, the folders don't show their size unless you click on them individually. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    While viewing a Finder window go to View>Show View Options, put a check in the box for 'Calculate All Sizes'. This is a setting you don't normally want to have turned on as it slows down the refresh when you switch windows, so you might want to remove the check once you identify the disk hogs.
    BTW- You can free up a lot of disk space & RAM if you remove any fonts that you & the OS don't really need. You may also have a great deal of space taken up by unnecessary printer drivers, not to mention the plethora of ReadMes & other 'goodies' that get added when you install software.

  • Lion has changed the order in which Finder items are sorted in Icon View; Acc vs. Desc.  How can you change this order?

    The order in which items are sorted has changed in Lion and I can't figure out how, or if, it can be changed.  Previously in Snow Leopard if you sorted by 'Date' in Icon View, your icons would be arranged from oldest to newest.  The same was true for 'Kind' and all the order sort options.  In Kind my *.zip files were positioned last.
    Now in Lion, the order is reversed.  Newest and Zips on top... the accending vs. decnding order has been changed.  How can I change the sort order in Icon View?

    I managed to fix the reverse order issue by deleting the com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.finder.plist.lockfile in the user library folder. I did have to use terminal to delete the files and then re-launch finder from the force quit window. Here are the step-by-step instructions:
    Hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu. Select Library.
    Navigate to the Preferences.
    Find the com.apple.finder.plist.lockfile and delete it.
    Open Terminal (Application/Utilites)
    In Terminal type in sudo rm (include a space after the rm and do not hit enter)
    Drag com.apple.finder.plist file to the terminal window. It will fill in the path to the file)
    Press return.
    Type in your password and hit return. (The cursor will not move when you type in your password)
    From the Apple menu, select force quit.
    Highlight finder and select re-launch.
    Be careful when using Terminal. There is no undo button and you can accidentally delete important files.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can I report which Ressource Related Billing items are not billed yet?

    Hi SDN's
    On my WBS's I have a number of costs - time registrations, travel costs and other finance postings. Some of them are billed, some of them are still not billed. When I go into DP91, this transaction clearly knows which items are already billed, since only the outstanding items are shown here. However, looking into tables COEP and AD01DLI* I do not find any clear references that can give me the basis showing non-billed items in a report.
    Does any of you know how DP91 keeps track of which items on my WBS are billed and which are not?
    Kind regards

    "... There you will be able to see if a more recent version of Safari, etc. was replaced with an older version."
    Not exactly. That screen shows my most recent Safari update was 5.1.2 on 12/16/11 -- then it shows the Mac OS X Update Combined was installed on 1/2/12. That's when my Safari got downgraded to 5.0.5, but that detail is missing from the Installed Updates preference pane.
    It looks like once an update gets installed, Software Update remembers that -- but does not take the newer update off the list if an older version replaces it???
    So, even though I see Security Update 2011-006 was installed on 10/21/11, I'm not sure if the OS Combo Update replaced any security items with older bits. Is there anything specific to security updates that I might be able to check?

  • Migration of iCal from PPC G5 10.4.11 to Intel iMac 10.6.6

    Some calendars I tried to bring across from iCal in 10.4.11 on a G5 PPC iMac to 10.6.6 on an Intel iMac using Migration Assistant have disappeared ie they are not to be found on the Intel iMac. Where are they or where might they have gone?
    One of the more important calendars that did not make it across in the migration was called Anniversaries&Holidays. This calendar, surprise surprise, contained items such as birthdays, public holidays etc that repeat on the same day each year, with a few variations such as Easter, which obviously changes date each year.
    I have gone to the back-up of the iCal calendars I had on the PPC iMac in Users/MyName/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources
    and found 8 folders with names such as 9C19D09D-2AA6-455C-8CF7-7AF3C09C9D6A.calendar
    This folder has three files in it, including one called corestorage.ics Is this the file I want/need?
    Interestingly, I had 8 calendars, so I might expect each of the corestorage.ics files to correspond to each of the 8 calendars. However, when I open each of these corestorage.ics files, I get only a messsage saying this: Adding New Events This Calendar contains new events. Please select a destination calendar: Then follows the name of the calendar. All of the 8 corestorage.ics files appear to want me to save to the same calendar and therefore appear to be identical to each other. Where is the corestorage.ics file that corresponds to the original calendar called Anniversaries&Holidays? I don't have a clue what is going on here. Does anyone else and can s/he help? Many thanks.

  • InDesign 2.0 on Intel iMac OS 10.5.8

    Will InDesign 2.0 work on my 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running OS 10.5.8?
    I saw a Adobe list of applications where it was shown as Not Comptible, but I have read somewhere that some are using it ok.
    My old G4 Mac where I used it for years finally died and I don't want to chance screwing up my fairly new iMac if I try to install it there.

    Thank you both for your input. $699 is a little too steep for me and I no longer do full-time pre-press work, but do on occasion so maybe I will look into some other possiblities such as Print Shop, maybe even SheepSaver etc.
    However, I did notice at Adobe site that an upgrade from PageMaker to InDesign CS4 is $199 which I would go for if it would work. I have both PageMaker 6.5 and 7 on my G3 Laptop, but obviously not on my Intel iMac which is where I want to put it. So I guess that would be a mute question. In fact the InDesign 2.0 which I also have on my laptop was the PageMaker Upgrade, but it was Not the CS4.
    Any thoughts on that.

  • Can't install logic studio on my Intel iMac

    I have logic pro 7.2 installed on my intel iMac, which now runs maverics. However I now want to install my logic studio upgrade but I get an error saying that power pc applications are no longer supported. How do I get logic studio on my machine which clearly should work as it is built for intel macs when Logic pro 7.2 runs fine!

    The following thread contains the method that uses Pacifist to achieve an installation of older Logic Pros on a Mac with more modern OS X versions when the installer no longer works...
    I am assuming the LS upgrade is to LP8?

  • Intel Imac Unexpectedly shuts down...

    I work for a company that has bought several Intel Imacs and most are working fine, but we have two that while the user is working will just immediately power off, and then start back up (I have configured energy saver to restart on power failure). Both of the troublesome machines (like all the computers here) are running on UPS boxes, so we are not having an issue with power.
    Both macs have been fully updated with OS X 10.4.9 and all other system updates.
    Are there a string of bad power supplies that are causing this issue, or is it potentially something else? These machines were just installed in the last week. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Next you should check the ram modules as one or both modules may have become disloged during shipping. Use this article to help you reinstall the ram.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303084
    If your handy with a screwdriver you can do this your self! Make sure that you reinstall both modules pressing firmly and seating them into place then close the two plastic eject levers and replace the cover. If this does not solve the issue I would give Apple a call. There has been a few reports of power supply issues but as you know Apple will make then good or replace them!

  • Intel iMac FaceTime fail?

    I've recently downloaded FaceTime for my Intel iMac which is running OSX 10.6.8.  The person I'm trying to call is on the latest version of iPad.  I've successfully created an AppleID and am using that address with FaceTime.  Whenever make a call, it rings on the other end, in which they accept.  It then says Connecting.... but fails everytime.  They have successfully used FaceTime with other iPads, but not with any Macs.
    The version of FaceTime I bought from the app store says that it is 1.0.2 (166).  Can anyone help me troubleshoot?  Is there a later version I need, or do I perhaps have something configured improperly?

    This may be a stupid question, but I was wondering what I need to purchase in order to transfer everything (emails, documents, etc.) from my current iMac to the new Intel iMac (which I'm getting soon). I'm running OS 9.2 right now.
    Any help is much appreciated.

    You'll need a firewire cable or an Ethernet cable (RJ-45) to transfer files.

    Genius bar told me to erase the harddisk and install OSX Maverick again. This has not changed the problems with the system settings

    You need to Repartition the drive as One partition which will erase all data from it and then reinstall OS X. then with the initial setup system you chose the language on the first screen that comes up. That sets the language for the whole system.
    There is no other way of completely removing certain information created by a previous owner. this hold strue whether you are selling or give a Mac to someone.
    To do the repartitioning you need to use the Online Internet Recovery system, if the Mac came with Lion 10.7 or above, or from the original system reinstall discs that came with it when it was new.

  • How do I choose which items appear when I open my Imac for the day?

    How do I choose which items appear on the screen when I open my Imac (intel) for the day, after shutting down the night before? Thank you. ArmandL

    There are two ways. Mt Lion and Lion have a feature that launches all programs that were running when you logged out or shut down. You can toggle this feature on and off when you shutdown/log out. Or you can set up login items in your user settings which will automatically launch any program you set there. To do this launch System Preferences, select Users and Groups and click on the Login Items but near the top part of the dialog. Click on the + button to add programs you want to be launched when you login or start up the computer.

  • Intel imac startup hangs on "None of your preferred networks are available" dialogue

    Hi everyone
    Running a 2006 Intel iMac, 10.6.8
    I have recently run into the "grey screen at start up" issue that is documented here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    I ran every routine in this article, up to and including a disk repair off the OSX install disk and this step seems to have fixed the  grey screen problem. However there is still one major problem unsolved that the article does not cover.
    Boot up runs normally and allows me to get into my account (there are 4 accounts on the machine). However i am then getting a dialogue screen "None of your preferred networks are available" with a list of local wireless networks (mine and neighbours).
    I have had this dialogue screen at times in the past and have simply been able to click cancel to bypass it. However the system is now hanging on this dialogue. If I try to click Cancel or Other the dialogue box changes position and the remainder of the desktop darkens, as if an action is taking place, but nothing happens beyond that.
    I have seen many other discussion posts on the "Preferred Networks" dialogue, but only one which describes the system actually hanging on this dialogue - that was in 2007 and the user was going to reformat the HD - he/she didn't post the outcome.
    This iMac is normally connected to the router by Ethernet cable. I have tried booting with and without the cable attached. I have tried booting in safe mode. Neither of these have had any effect.
    Can anyone recommend any other fixes I can try? Or is a complete reformat the only option?
    Thanks in advance for any help, hugely appreciated.

    Thanks Roam - however I think my situation is different.
    In the case you refer to, the user was able to cancel the "preferred networks" dialogue and then proceed normally to system settings to apply a fix to stop this dialogue reappearing in future.
    My problem is that the Mac *completely freezes* on this dialogue box - clicking Cancel simply does not work, I can't access any other menus or applications.
    I forgot to add that the spinning progress wheel appears intermittently on the "preferred networks" dialogue box, suggesting that some sort of routine is trying to run, but never successfully.
    Thanks for your reply nevertheless, really appreciated.
    Anyone else out there with any experience of this?!
    Thanks in advance

  • List which should show as empty until items are searched

    Hey,
    I've inserted an App Part of a list using a custom view. This view shows only the title of the items. My goal is to have the list shown as empty (=basically only showing the search box of the App Part) until the user searches the list.
    I'd like to achieve this with OOTB features if it's just possible. The search box for the list is activated from its properties (Display search box).
    I wonder if this could be achieved somehow with list view filtering, such as "Show the items when column [Title] [contains] [searchboxvalue]".
    I'm aware of the Filter web parts, but their straight provided requirement to match exactly the item's title is something I'm trying to avoid with the list's own search box.

    Hi,
    We can use CSS+jQuery to achieve it, please add the following code into a content editor web part.
    <style>
    table.ms-listviewtable{
    display:none;
    </style>
    <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.1.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    $(function () {
    setTimeout(function () {
    $("img[id^='inplaceSearchDiv_WPQ']").click(function () {
    if ($(this).attr("title") == "Search") {
    $("table.ms-listviewtable").show();
    if ($(this).attr("title") == "Clear search") {
    $("table.ms-listviewtable").hide();
    }, 5000);
    </script>
    The issue shouldn't in the referencing of jQuery. I entered alert boxes to different parts of the code followingly:
    $(function () {
    alert("first");
    setTimeout(function () {
    alert("second");
    $("img[id^='inplaceSearchDiv_WPQ']").click(function () {
    alert("third");
    if ($(this).attr("title") == "Search") {
    alert("fourth");
    $("table.ms-listviewtable").show();
    if ($(this).attr("title") == "Clear search") {
    alert("fifth");
    $("table.ms-listviewtable").hide();
    }, 5000);
    The alert first was popped up right after refreshing the page. The
    second came 5 seconds later (Timeout function). The alert third popped up once clicking the actual search symbol (magnifying lens
    or the x-symbol for clearing the search). fourth
    and fifth never were alerted.
    I'd like ask about two parts of this code:
    Should the $("img[id^='inplaceSearchDiv_WPQ']")
    be in the code as it is, or should it be e.g. WPQ2 to match the web part's ID?
    About the if
    ($(this).attr("title")
    ==
    "Search") part:
    Should the title be the column name of the list which we are searching for?
