Interesting Fix For Missing ".db" Files

Some people may have an error when they choose to boot from existing OS, and that error usually prevents the user from downloading any packages or using pacman commands. I use a MediaLink Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter, Model No. MWN-USB150N, in case that means anything.
The error will usually say something like:
"  error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from [insert mirror here] : Could not resolve host: [insert mirror here]
error: failed retrieving file 'extra.db' from [insert mirror here] : Could not resolve host: [insert mirror here]
error: failed retrieving file 'community.db' from [insert mirror here] : Could not resolve host: [insert mirror here]
error: failed to update communuty (download library error)
error: failed to synchronize any databases
error: failed to init transaction (download library error) ".
My fix was typing "systemctl enable dhcpcd.service".

The command "systemctl enable dhcpcd.service" connects it to the Internet.
That's interesting, but I use "systemctl enable dhcpcd.service" after already installing the system and doing other things that require internet access. I use the command in the installation in order to connect to the internet when I chose to boot from existing OS. I'm guessing I'm automatically connecting in the installation phase but not automatically connected in the "boot existing OS" phase?

How are you adding the images to iWeb - dragging them onto the page or onto a Photo template?
Where are they missing from - the published website? If so, try publishing to a local folder...

  • Bug fix for missing files error msg

from what i can tell there is still no bug fix for this issue that way too many people are getting.
why has nobody from Apple posted on this board discussing their plans for this issue?
why is this issue not noted on the tech support home page?
my bet is 95% of the people who are also getting this error don't use this message board and therefore are really clueless...

*from what i can tell there is still no bug fix for this issue that way too many people are getting.*
WHat bug/eror are you talingk about?
*why has nobody from Apple posted on this board discussing their plans for this issue?*
    This is a user-to-user forum.
Besides, what good would it do if Apple posted, "we are working on it"?
Most likely, any problems with iTunes are being looked at.
why is this issue not noted on the tech support home page?
What issue? Maybe it's not a big enough problem to make a big deal out of.
my bet is 95% of the people who are also getting this error don't use this message board
If that's the case, why should Apple post something?

  • Less destructive fix for the "original file could not be found" issue

+(Note: this is mostly a copy of the post I just submitted in reply to http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6785594#6785594)+
Most solutions to the "The song xxx could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" issue involve deleting iTunes library files, deleting-then-re-importing everything from iTunes, and other destructive techniques. I found an easier fix for this, but it might be (a) specific to libraries on a network drive (NAS) or (b) specific to me. YMMV, but give it a try. This was on a Mac, so a Windows solution might exist with the same technique. Please post here and let me know if this works for you!
After some investigating and trial-and-error, I discovered that if I viewed a list of songs in Finder, iTunes could find the files again. For example:
*Double click on a song in iTunes and get the "original file could not be found..." error. Do not say 'Yes' to locating it.
*Open Finder and locate that Folder of songs
*Double-click on another song from that album. It should work.
So, my fix: *run a command that lists/touches every file in your iTunes music folder.*
    For Macs:
    *Open Terminal
*Run this: *ls -R /Path/To/Your/iTunes\ Music \Folder/* (note how you 'escape' spaces in the folder name with back-slashes).
    Windows:
    *Start - Run - cmd
*Run this: dir /s \Path\To\Your\"iTunes Music Folder" (note that you escape spaces by quoting the dir name.)
My NAS is named "VAULT" so my command was "ls -R /Volumes/VAULT/My\ Music/" You will see the files being listed at light speed -- ignore this. It will run for a while, depending on how many files you have, about 30 seconds for me. After executing this I could listen to any music file in iTunes!
But, every time I lost my connection to my NAS, such as waking from sleep mode, I had to run it again. So I created an Automator application and a Apple Script to run it from within iTunes so I can run it any time I need to. If you don't want to do that, just run the command I specified. If you want to download my Automator app, or see instructions on how to create your own, check out my blog post: http://40withegg.com/2008/3/8/mac-attack-making-itunes-find-those-original-files -especially-on-a-nas
With any luck, my post will be *completely unnecessary* soon because Apple will find a real solution to this.

    Jeffe hello,
I have seen more problems created by the consolidate command than I have ever seen fix things... I'm not saying it does not work but what it does do and what it does not is very hard to work out for most and major problems are the result...
to sort your problem do this...
    1. Open your iTunes folder in the Home Music folder and make a backup copy of the iTunes Library file and put on the desktop.
    2. Start iTunes and in the Library sort on the Heading 'Date added' ... you may need to install it... control/click on heading-bar and select from popup menu.
    3. When you have sorted scroll to half way and you will see the songs are split evenly... select the ones you want to remove with a shift/click and hit delete key... say no about move to trash for now.
    4. Check that everything is as you want it... if so carry on... if not come back and tell me what happened.
    5. Quit iTunes and put the iTunes Library file in the iTunes folder in a safe place like your Documents folder... drag the copy from desktop and put it in the iTunes folder.
    6. Check the name is correct on the 'copy' edit it to be iTunes Library.
    7. Start iTunes by double/clicking on the file and go through steps 2 & 3 again but this time when you delete say yes about move to trash... don't empty it yet 1st check that all is OK with your library.
You can edit the good files that you are left with but the addition of '01' in the name will not have any adverse effect on them at all... editing with an Applescript is very easy.
take care Jeffe and let's know how you get on or if you run into any unforeseen problems ... TP

  • Fix for slow opening files... soon?

We have several stations set up globally in various offices using Photoshop CS...
Image files, no matter how small the file is... even a single small JPG takes a good 10-15 seconds to open (win xp) and we frequently need to work with hundreds of images. This seems to be a major problem and from what I find on Google, not uncommon...
I finally ran into this temporary 'fix' in the archives which involves setting up a LOCAL printer/driver as a DEFAULT...
While that DID alleviate that problem, I can't see that adobe is just letting this be THE fix for the problem... I've done updates to our CS3 products and have a difficult time believing that there is no permanent fix for this yet.
It seems unlike adobe to expect so many clients to have to experience this problem, spending hours or days trying to figure out why their systems have slowed down and asking themselves questions mostly unrelated to the problem, such as 'did i run out of swap space on my drive?', 'how are my history/cache settings?', 'is there some network drive causing the problem?', 'Is there some spyware slowing my box?', etc...
And on top of that having to notify all the offices... 'Okay guys, if you use photoshop you need to do this, this, and that... temporarily'
Please tell me there is a permanent fix soon...

I don't know which versions of photoshop need to check/contact the network printer...
For volumes of image processing via the batch commands I often need to use our old Photoshop 6 which, even with the network (a fairly large corporate network) the files open up almost instantly... every time... unless they're huge print resolution images...
On the same network for such a task (batching hundreds of images) PS CS3 is unuseable to us unless we implement the local printer 'fix'... and even so, there is more of a delay than with our old photoshop...
And why does it need to contact the printer for each file that is opened? For the first one, sure... check it, done... I'm not printing dammit, just opening files.
If it needs printer information the local OS already has drivers loaded up, couldn't it check those? It shouldn't have to look for other network devices on there unless it's using them... but I'm no tech... so there must be a reason that it simply MUST do it...
And even so... why is this 'fix' so damn hard to find on the net? Tons of people with issues and a lone, difficult-to-find blurb as an obscure fix...?

  • Itunes:  i want to find a single fix for missing music on itunes rather than using "iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads" on a case by case basis.

recently when i was creating a playlist, i realized that i was missing music from my extensive itunes (12.0.1.26) library.  i found the solution "itunes:  finding lost media and downloads" and used the general approach to find the music in finder and copy it to itunes.  i don't want to do this every time i find i am missing music.  is there an automated fix?  i want apple to develop a way to automate the fix.  can it be that this isn't a problem for many people?
i ask this now because i just looked for music i thought i had but can't find.  maybe i am wrong about having the artist, but it has happened on another artist too.  i can't trust itunes to tell me whether i have a song or not.  i don't want to keep going back to finder, especially when the instructions in "itunes:  finding lost media and downloads" doesn't actually reflect my system (os x 10.7.5).
i don't want to try to do a restore.  i have never done a restore on my mac (previously a pc user).  and, i don't know how far back to take the restore to find the old music.  and then music i have added since i lost the old music wouldn't be there.
i understand that there are so many system variables that apple would need to take into consideration with a general fix.  but:  i am assuming that apple's changes have caused my problem and feel that apple should do something to fix it.  perhaps my assumption is incorrect.
    thank you for your help.

limnos, i always have backups.  the problem is that i don't know how far back in time to take a restore because i don't know how long this has been going on.  and, if i take the restore back very far, i will lose what has been added since the music started to disappear.
i don't even know what you mean when you say "you will check there aren't any broken links (use a script from the Dougscripts web site) before you do a backup."
i agree with you to some extent about not automatically installing upgrades.  i'm still running lion and was pushed to it from snow leopard.  the problem is that i have a hard time envisioning the changes described in an update to judge whether something is valuable or not.
i have questions about your last paragraph.  i'm going to repeat it here and then insert my questions as i go.  please forgive my all caps for the moment:
"Now for your missing music, is it that there are broken links, or are things missing completely from the library?" I DON'T KNOW ENOUGH TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION.  I BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH BROKEN LINKS.  WHEN I COULDN'T FIND THE MUSIC THAT I THOUGHT I HAD LOADED INTO ITUNES YEARS AGO, I FOUND THE CD'S AND IMPORTED THEM TO ITUNES.  I GOT A MESSAGE ABOUT SOME OF THE TRACKS BEING DUPLICATES THAT ASKED WHETHER I WANTED TO IGNORE OR IMPORT.  I CHOSE IMPORT BECAUSE ITUNES DIDN'T TELL ME WHAT WAS DUPLICATED.  IT WAS ONLY AFTER RE-IMPORTING SEVERAL CD'S THAT I REALIZED THAT THERE WERE NOW DUPLICATES OF THE CD'S:  THE FILES I HAD JUST LOADED AND THOSE THAT I HAD LOADED SOME TIME AGO.  THE ORIGINALS MAGICALLY APPEARED AFTER I RE-IMPORTED THE CD'S.   I'M GUESSING THAT THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A BROKEN LINK  I DON'T KNOW HOW TO RECOGNIZE A BROKEN LINK OR HOW TO PREVENT ONE.  AFTER I REALIZED THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THE "FINDING LOST MEDIA AND DOWNLOADS" QUIDE.  I LOCATED THE MISSING MUSIC IN FINDER AND DRAGGED IT TO ITUNES.  DOES THIS COUNT AS A BROKEN LINK?
"If the latter and you use iTunes default settings for managing media, you can drag your media folder to Automatically Add To iTunes.  It should add anything in the folder but not in the library list but ignore things that are."  CAN YOU REPHRASE THIS LAST PARAGRAPH?  I DON'T KNOW WHAT "DEFAULT SETTINGS FOR MANAGING MEDIA" MEANS.
FOR "DRAG MEDIA FOLDER TO AUTOMATICALLY ADD TO ITUNES,"  I THINK YOU MEAN I CAN DRAG   /MUSIC/ITUNES/ITUNES MEDIA/MUSIC   IN FINDER TO THE ITUNES ICON IN THE DOCK.  AND, THAT THAT ACTION WILL REPLACE ANYTHING MISSING IN ITUNES BUT NOT DUPLICATE THE FILES THAT ARE IN ITUNES.  IS THAT RIGHT?
thank you for your time and help, limnos.

  • Alert Entry for Missing Data File

I am trying a simple recovery scenario: deleting a data file of a normal tablespace when the database is running, and the data file has been backed up.
Before shutdown, checkpoint completes normally (I guess Oracle still keeps the file inode handle). When I select from dba_data_files, error occurred:
    SQL> alter system checkpoint;
    System altered.
    SQL> select count(*) from dba_data_files;
    select count(*) from dba_data_files
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01116: error in opening database file 10
    ORA-01110: data file 10: '/u01/oradata/data01.dbf'
    ORA-27041: unable to open file
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
Additional information: 3To my surprise, nothing was recorded in the alert log. And no trace files generated in udump. And Oracle refused to restore the datafile when it was running.
Message appeared in alert log when I try to shutdown the database. After shutdown abort (Oracle refused to shutdown immediate) and restart instance, I was able to restore and recover the data file.
Is this the expected behaviour? If so, how would you detect missing datafiles when db is running?
    Oracle: 9.2.0.6, OS: RHEL3

    1. It wasn't detected by the checkpoint caused by a switch logfile because the file isn't actually missing. As others -inded you!- have said, on Unix/Linux, you can delete a file at any time, but if the file is in use, the inodes remain allocated and the process using it continues to see it very much as there. Because, at the inode level, it absolutely IS still there! Incidentally, it was pointless telling you to do a switch logfile, because as far as datafiles are concerned, that doesn't do anything the alter system checkpoint command does that you'd already tried.
I used to do demos of how to recover from the total loss of a controlfile in Oracle University classes: I'd do a flurry of rm *.ctl commands, and then dramatically issue the checkpoint command... and nothing at all happened. Very demoralising first time I did it. Issue a startup force, however, and at that point the inodes are released, the files really are deleted and the startup falls over in the nomount state. Bouncing the instance was the only way I could get the database to protest about the removal of a datafile, too.
    2. No, if a file went missing in a way that Oracle could detect, it wouldn't matter if the file was empty, because it cares about the presence/absence of the datafile headers. They have to be updated, even if nothing else does.
    3. It would only be in the alert log if SMON detected the lost file at startup (one of its jobs is, explicitly, to check for the existence of all files mentioned in the control file). CKPT wouldn't raise an alert, because as far as it's concerned, nothing's wrong. The inodes are still held, after all. Your attempts to create tables and so on inside the lost file do generate display errors because (I think) at that point it's your server process that is attempting to do things to the file, not CKPT or other pre-existent, permanently-running background processes.
    4. It's specific to Unix, anyway, of which Linux is a variant.

  • Is there a fix for an InDesign file with error code 3?

I have: reset preferences, exported to older file type, opened it on a different machine, etc. Everytime I try to click a page at the beginning of the document, ID crashes and has to reboot. CS6.

Sorry to hear that. Yes, we may be able to assist! Here is a little more info on how we will do this - Markzware InDesign File Recovery Service:
    http://markzware.com/support/faq/recover-bad-file-service/
Troubleshooing may help and here are some tips:
Just like a doctor can not always say what caused the symptoms, they can offer best advice standards for prevention. For instance, the typical items such as; system up to date along with all software used in the process, enough hard-disk space for scratch disks, etc.
It is hard to say what actually caused your InDesign file to go corrupt, but it comes down to these likely causes:
    * Corrupt Font(s) (or corrupt font caches - see below)
    * Corrupt Image(s)
    * Power Failure
    * Placing images via drag-and-drop from an Internet page

    * Copying and Pasting text from Word, PowerPoint, etc into InDesign
    * Working on an InDesign file over a network or on a remote server
Here is a video on how to tackle the font caches of InDesign, which is good to do once and a while anyway:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf5ZuiaYgus
For checking individual font files (fonts are like mini apps really), we recommend either FontExplorer XPro or Extensis Suitcase Fusion 4, with the later perhaps the more popular of the two.
Deleting your InDesign preferences can also fix some odd issues. To delete the InDesign Preferences hold down shift+option+command+control on Mac or shift+ctrl+alt on WIndows while starting up InDesign.
    Hopefully this assists.

  • The 2 year old fix for changing temp files is no longer valid, I need to change the temp file location in the latest firefox.

In 3.6.3 I'm unable to find the parent cache to change where the temp files are located. I have an SSD drive, and I need to get the temp file off, and onto my platter drive. I have read the previous fix of about:config and changing the parent cache location, but it no longer seems to be there. I'm unable to locate anything relating to my SSD drive location in about:config.
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.375.70 Safari/533.4

Unfortunately, it appears that what I wrote about not being able to find the location IN about:config of the cache to change it from my C: drive to a different location, was mildly misunderstood that I didn't know how to get into about:config.
The location of browser.cache.disk.parent_directory does not currently exist in 3.6.3. I'm assuming it's under a different location. Also using the simple string of "cache" lists several options, but none of them appear to be where firefox is currently dumping the temp files onto my C:
I merely need to know how to switch the temp file location from 1 drive, to another. Not downloads, the temp file.

  • Fix for Missing Audio Device in WinXP S

My sound card disappeared from the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties panel. I tried cleansweeping and reinstalling to no effect. I could watch my card disappear from the panel as Windows went through startup after I reinstalled it. My card , a Sound Blaster Li've!, was listed under the hardware tab but the drivers were listed as "Driver installed but not started". Creative Diagnostics said I passed the hardware detection test but failed the driver tests. I am using the drivers from the Li'veDrvUni-Pack(ENG) version .0.0..
I found this fix after searching with Google. The site is www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxpt/t06642744. It resolved my problem. I did use DH Driver Cleaner Pro to remove any Creative drivers. You need to know that the hardware scan and reinstall in step 6 can take several minutes. I also removed hidden copies of my Creative devices in step 5. The revealed hidden devices have greyed icons next to them.

First I suggest everyone to create a System Restore point to have something to return
in case of something goes wrong. You can boot XP to safe mode by pressing F8 at the
beginning of the Windows startup and select Safe Mode if the system doesn?t start
in normal mode and use System Restore there to go back to the working configuration.
Then try these steps only if the others mentioned here don?t help. I had everything
ok in Device Manager and every driver was running that should, compared to an other
working system, but the symptom was that there was no sound coming out from the sound
card. Everything was OK in the Device Manager, but in the Sounds and Audio Devices
Control Panel there was only the Voice recording option on the Voice tab, and the
MIDI music playback (without the sound card being in the list) on the Audio tab acti've.
The others like Voice playback, Sound playback, Sound recording and everything on
the Volume tab was grayed out.

    2. On the System Properties panel, Advanced tab, Environment Variables button, under
the User variables click New and create a variable named devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices

    3. Open the Device Manager and select Show hidden devices from the View menu.
    4. Under the Sound, video and game controllers group, find your sound card(s) and
disable it/them (don?t need to uninstall).
    5. Then uninstall the following devices:
    - Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
    - Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device
    - Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer
    - Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
    6. Select Scan for hardware changes from the Action menu. Now the system should redetect

The problem should be disappeared, you should be able to play sounds.

    Hi
You should check if the microphone has not been disabled.
Go to control panel -> sound -> recording tab
There you should make a right click and should enable the both options called show hidden devices and show disabled devices.
Now you should see 2 microphone entries; one internal mic and second should belong to the external mic jack.
If you want to use the internal mic then mark it as default device.

  • Fix for missing iTunes DJ in iTunes11

I was one of those who were not particularly satisfied with the fact that iTunes DJ was taken out from the new upgrade iTunes11.
I used it every day, and for me the ability to play highly rated songs more frequent - but not only the higly rated songs, was the most important.
Here's a fix that sort of does the trick:
I have 10 000 songs in my library and almost 2500 of them are rated with four or five stars.
    1. Make a smart playlist with the songs rated 4 or 5. Limit to mediatype "music"
    2. Make a smart playlist with the songs rated below 4. Limit to 300 songs. Sort by "longest time since played" (do not know what the exact term is in the english version)
    3. Make a smart playlist with the songs rated below 4. Limit to 100 songs. Sort by "newly added".
    4. Make a smart playlist with the criteria that "Playlist" is either of the three lists created above.
Start any song in the new playlist and make sure the shuffle symbol is on.
Voilla, you have an iTunes DJ like playlist that will play the favorites versus other songs in a ratio 5:1 (with my 2500 rated songs). It also makes sure that songs that are recently added also are a part of the list.
It doesn't fix the voting issue from the remote app for IOS. But still, this works!

I didn't use iTunes DJ professionally, but only for personal parties with friends/acquaintances.
One of the major frustrations I have with iTunes 11 is the playback buffer.
In the previous version of iTunes you could instantly jump to another point in the playback by clicking on another point on the progress bar.  With ver 11, clicking on another point on the playback progress bar causes a full 3-seconds of dead air before iTunes can re-reference playback.  Very anoying and certainly an indication of poorer playback buffering.
This is so uncharacteristic of Apple.  I have been using Apple products since 1987 and never felt so betrayed before.
