Interoperability of 32 bit and 64 bit

Hi,
I have a production system running on Solaris 8 , 32 bit. This system runs across 10 boxes communicating through a native architecture using sockets, threads and message passing through object serialization.
Now, my client wants to add a M4000 box (Ultrasparc VI 64 bit.). This machine has to coexist with the existing boxes on Solaris 8. I will recompile my application on Soalris , SUn C++ 5.9 (Sun studio 12) to run on the M4000 box. My questions is:
1. Option 1 - Shall i do a 32 bit build. Will it run without any problem on UltraSparc VI Solaris 10 and work fine with existing build on Soalris 8 machines.
2. Option 2 - DO a 64 bit build. In this case can a 64 bit build on Ultra Sparc VI work with an existing 32 bit build on a old Sun sparc CPUs.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Manoj

Hi
Unless your Solaris 8 boxes are really old, then they are probably running the OS 64bit. For instance, we still have a few machines running Solaris 7, like an Ultra 4 that looks like it was installed back in Dec 1999. Even this is running the kernel in 64bit mode.
Having said that, unless you have a pressing need for 64bits (over 3.9G memory requirement typically, maybe a marketing dept that won't take no for an answer), then you're probably better off sticking to 32bits.
You can't mix 32bit and 64bits in a single application. There should be no problem if you want to do socket communication between a 32bit and a 64bit app.
Lastly, you can't compile on a Solaris 9 machine and deploy on a Solaris 8 machine. Backwards compatibility is usually excellent, but forwards compatibility is not assured.

  • Issues with interoperability between Weblogic 12 and Weblogic 8.1

Hi, I'm experiencing issues trying to perform a JNDI lookup from Weblogic 12C to a Weblogic 8.1 Weblogic instance.  The error I am receiving is:
javax.naming.CommunicationException [Root exception is weblogic.socket.UnrecoverableConnectException: [Login failed: 'Incompatible version: Incompatible versions - this server:8.1.5.0 client:12.1.1.0]]
This same test when performed from a Weblogic 11G to Weblogic 8.1 instance works fine.  Can anyone enlighten me to whether this is a bug or if its no longer supported.  Also, if this is no longer a supported configuration is there any methods of achieving this without upgrading all of the applications and queues on the Weblogic 8.1 instance.
    Thanks

can you set the domain sensor logger to debug on the windows installation and post the log file results for the problematic case? For the default domain, this would be the default.collaxa.cube.sensor logger (accessible from the manage bpel domain link in the upper right hand corner of the console and then the logging subtab). The log messages appear in the orabpel/domains/<domain name>/logs/domain.log file.

Subject: Client / Server / Interoperability Support Between Different Oracle Versions
    Doc ID: Note:207303.1 Type: BULLETIN
Last Revision Date: 26-OCT-2005 Status: PUBLISHED
Oracle Client / Server Interoperability Support
    Introduction
This note gives a summary of the support for interoperability between Oracle client and server versions. This includes support for connections over database links between Oracle versions. Note that this relates to support for investigation of defects / ability to obtain bug fixes.
For a summary of the support status of each Oracle release see Note 161818.1
    General Policy
Oracles general policy is to test and support each new Oracle release for compatibility with older releases thus:
Test the NEW client to each OLDER server release where the OLDER release is still covered by Premier Support (formerly Primary Error Correction support) at the time that the NEW version is released.
Test OLDER clients to the NEW server release where the OLDER release is still covered by Premier Support (formerly Primary Error Correction support) OR is in the first two years of Extended Support (formerly Extended Maintenance support).
Tests between the NEW version and other OLDER releases may be added where Oracle deems it sensible to support interoperability between those releases.
    Current Interoperability Support Situation
The matrix below summarizes client and server combinations that are supported.
New interoperability problems will only be investigated if BOTH releases involved are covered by a valid support contract at the time that the issue is reported .
    eg:
An 8.1.7 client to a 9.2.0 server issue requires the customer to have a valid Extended Maintenence support contract for the 8.1.7 client in order for Oracle to investigate it.
    Server Version
    Client Version 10.2.0 10.1.0 9.2.0 9.0.1 8.1.7 8.1.6 8.1.5 8.0.6 8.0.5 7.3.4

8.0.5 No No No No Was Was Was Was Was Was
7.3.4 No No Was Was Was Was Was Was Was Was
    Key:
    Yes Supported
EMS Supported for customers under Extended Maintenance (EMS) only.
Was Was a supported combination but one of the releases is no longer covered by any of Premier Support , Primary Error Correct support or Extended Maintenance Support so fixes are no longer possible.
    No Has never been Supported
    Specific Notes:
    #1 - See Note 207319.1
#2 - An ORA-3134 error is incorrectly reported if a 10g client tries to connect to an 8.1.7.3 or lower server. See Note 3437884.8 .
#3 - An ORA-3134 error is correctly reported when attempting to connect to this version.
#4 - There are problems connecting from a 10g client to 8i/9i where one is EBCDIC based. See Note 3564573.8
#5 - For connections between 10.2 and 9.2 the 9.2 end MUST be at 9.2.0.4 or higher. Connections between 10.2 and 9.2.0.1, 9.2.0.2 or 9.2.0.3 are not supported.
    General Notes:
For database links between different Oracle versions connections must be supported in BOTH directions in the matrix above.
eg: As 9.2 -> 7.3.4 is not supported then database links between these version are not supported in either direction.
Unsupported combinations may appear to work but can encounter errors for particular operations. The fact that they appear to work should not be relied upon - issues on unsupported combinations will not be investigated.
Since new database servers are compatible with a limited set of older OCI clients, it may not be necessary to upgrade the client software when upgrading the database. However, some new features may not work without upgrading the client software. So, for example, an Oracle 7.3.4 client is able to connect to an Oracle8i database, but is not able to take advantage of newer features such as Transparent Application Failover (introduced in v8).
Oracle Applications , or other Oracle products, may have supported configurations not listed in the matrix above.
The matrix above also applies between different platforms and between 32/64 bit releases of Oracle client / server except where any Oracle platform desupport notice indicates otherwise .

  • Airport wifi problems with uverse and gigabit switch resolved

I think there is a bug in airport firmware 7.6 with how spanning tree works in addition to problems with the Uverse router. Having an Airport with a uverse 2wire 3801 and gigabit switch will not work. Putting the extreme in NAT mode with DMZ plus behind the uverse resolved the problem.
    Network configuration:
    Uverse 2wire 3801 router
3801 provides prioritization for upstream traffic so skype and VoIP work better when doing a lot of stuff on Internet
    Airport extreme firmware 7.6
two airport express 802.11n hardwired to extreme. Set up in bridge mode. All access points have same SSID "create a network" to enable roaming. Ignore anything to do with extending a network.  firmware 7.6
    two gigabit switches
        Netgear GS608 - 8 port gigabit switch
        Trendnet TEG-S80g - 8 port gigabit switch
100BT 5 port switch - did not figure into problem
Three Uverse set top boxes wired on Ethernet. They have to be wire directly to the 2wire box to work correctly. See: http://forums.att.com/t5/Features-and-How-To/At-amp-t-U-Verse-modem-setup-Airpor t-Extreme/td-p/2300785
However, you need to be careful to place your own PCs and other internet devices on the network created by your gear (airport extreme in your case), but keep AT&T's set top boxes for the IPTV services IN FRONT of your own router - so they remain on AT&T's provided network.
So it would work like this ...
Network 1: 2wire RG (4 lan ports) ->  Any Set tops, and to the WAN port on your AirportExtreme
Network 2: Airport Extreme LAN ports -> to any computers or internet devices (but not AT&T set top boxes).
The RG prioritizes the traffic for your Uverse Voice and your Uverse TV ahead of internet data traffic, as it rationalizes data heading out of your home.  If you place your own equipment in that equation (like putting AT&T set top boxes behind your Airport Extreme) the performance and function of your AT&T set top boxes could really flake out on you.
    Symptom:
Everything would be working fine, then intermittently all my wifi access points would stop working. ~6,000 ms latency, dropped packets. Ethernet worked fine. Here is an example of my macbook pinging the extreme when associated with the extreme over wifi with a strong signal.
    ping: sendto: Host is down

    64 bytes from 192.168.1.64: icmp_seq=36 ttl=255 time=39.828 ms
    Root cause:
It looks like the 2wire 2801 router has a problem with spanning tree when interoperating with gigabit switches and airports. There is interplay with the airport.
I did not have this problem until the 7.6 airport firmware. I had been using the Netgear hub for about a year with the extreme in bridge mode. I added the Trendnet hub and upgraded airport firmware at the same time which made fault isolation difficult.
    Problem recreation:
Set up airport expresses hard wired to extreme
Connect gigabit switch anywhere to network
    Everything OK
Dettach one computer from wifi then reattach, then all wifi stops working. It takes a few seconds for the problem to propagate.
    Ethernet still works fine
    Problem Resolution:
    Connect to 2wire with ethernet
Set 2wire route to have subnet as 192.168.2.x
Set extreme in NAT mode behind 2wire. It will complain about double NAT. Override the warning. Set the subnet to 192.168.1.x so you don't have to change any static IP addresses. Note that 2wire uses 192.168.1.254 as default route whereas airport uses 192.168.1.1.
I set DHCP to start at .10 to leave the lower addresses for assigning static IP addresses to computers I want to expose outside the firewall.
Go into firewall settings. Select airport extreme. Select the bottom setting which is "DMZ Plus". When you go into the airport extreme settings, you will now see that it has the uverse public IP address on its WAN port. NAT port mappings work fine on the extreme behind the 2wire router.

Keeping this very short here is a summary of the actual problem and solution to allow your Apple Airport Extreme to run in Bridge mode on the same subnet as your uVerse settop boxes (if your Layer 2 switch is configurable).
Devices: Uverse, Cisco SG300, and Airport Extreme
uVerse uses Multicast to broadcast video streams between the uVerse network to the settop box, and from settop box to settop box.
X number of Multicast Groups are created based on X number of settop boxes you have.  You can see the multicast definitions by logging into the webinterface of the iNid. Each settop box is a member and can choose to display a broadcasted TV stream or not.
Multicast membership is setup by the use of ICMP messages for IPv4 (MLD for IPv6).  Each of the settop boxes become members of each others multicast group by reporting up to the iNid (MultiCast Proxy).
In an ideal world a layer 2 switch will track these memberships and only forward a broadcast packet to the ports on the switch to which the settop boxes are connected to.  The switch would do these via snooping on the ICMP packets.  Most switches by default do not do this by default and simply forward the broadcast packett out every one of it's switch ports.
Here in lies the problem.  Problem is that the Apple AES doesn’t do ICMP snooping / filtering and floods the wireless network with these broadcast streams.
In order to fix this you must turn on ICMP snooping and filtering on the switch (or buy a switch that does this).  I have a Cisco SG300 and list out the configuration below.
    Other notes:
Ensure that all Media renderers (settop boxes) and servers are wired directly off the switch and not attached to any of the Airport Express ports.  This way no media transverses the Airport (only control point traffic goes through the WiFi - which is fine).  Obviously if the IGMP snooping switch sees any client requesting Multicast streaming traffic on the same port as the WAP, it will add that Multicast address to the forwarding table for that port, and then, yes it could get flooded.
Remember, you need to allow some Multicast traffic through your WAP to allow UPnP discovery to work (assuming that you will be using Wireless control points.)
Read the Multicast chapter in the SG 300 switch Admin Guide as it explains things very well.
Setting up multicast on the SG300s using the WebUI:
    1. Multicast/Properties/
Tick enable Bridge Multicast Filtering Status for VLAN 1, and
set the Forwarding Method to IP Group Address for both IPv4 & IPv6.
    2. Multicast/ IGMP snooping/
Tick enable IGMP snooping status then select and edit the entry and ensure that IGMP querier status is ticked.
It's essential for IGMP snooping to work that there must be at least one active IGMP querier on the network - if more than one is enabled, they will carry out an "election" to decide which one should be active (normally the one with the lowest IP address.)
    3. Multicast Router Port
Set whichever port that is connected to the uVerse iNid to Status which means that it the uVerse router connected to this port is the Multicast Router
    4. Multicast/ Unregistered Multicast
set all ports to Filtering. (The default is Forwarding.)
There are a lot of other variables within all the above - the defaults are OK, you should probably leave them alone!
In the config file you would then expect to see the above appearing as something like this:
    ip igmp snooping
    ip igmp snooping vlan 1
ip igmp snooping vlan 1 immediate-leave
    interface vlan 1
    bridge multicast mode ipv4-group
    bridge multicast ipv6 mode ip-group
    interface range gi1-10
    bridge multicast unregistered filtering
ip igmp snooping vlan 1 querier
ip igmp snooping vlan 1 querier address <IP-Addr>

  • Regression between jdbc thin version 9 and 10.1.0.3

    Hi all,
I tried to get a Date columns as a String with a specific format using the following technique:
    dStatement = connection.createStatement();
    dStatement.execute("alter session set NLS_DATE_FORMAT='YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'");
    ((OracleStatement)dStatement).defineColumnType(1, Types.VARCHAR);
    ResultSet rs = dStatement.executeQuery("select aDateColumn from...");
    rs.next();
    String aDate = rs.getString(1);
it worked fine in 9.2.0.5, but it failed on 10.1.03. I gives me the standard oracle format, which has got a .0 after the seconds.
    Actually, in 10.1.0.3, I can do :
    ((OracleStatement)dStatement).defineColumnType(999, Types.VARCHAR);
and then execute a query that return 1 columns without even an exception.
Any workarounds not involving to_char() and getDate()?

The application works in windows machines (mainly
Windows 2003), running .Net and in Linux running
    JBoss.
In Windows, we use the usual fat client (OCI) - MS
drivers for Oracle. Which data access methods or APIs are you using?
Microsoft's .Net provider for Oracle "requires Oracle Client software 8.1.7 or later". MS' other drivers from back in the days are designed for Oracle 7 and possibly 8.0.x, but no later.
Why are you not using Oracle's drivers "for Oracle"?
In Java, we use the thin client.>
We have now a new customer that has 10.1.0.3.0, and
due to other existing applications, he can't upgrade. Is that on the db side or app server?
    >
We've made lots of tests in 10.2.0.3.0, and have now
some clients using it in this version.
I just need the RDBMS and client drivers changes (if any).Your app is closest to client drivers and if you have made a lot of tests, perhaps you should stick to this version of Client. The db side is slightly different. Oracle certifies interoperability between Net client and server. So I guess you need to map out which db specific features you are using and any install scripts, management procedures, etc. that may differ.
    I would assume that from a 10.1 to a 10.2, no
change could break my code, but unfortunately my
experience taught me not to be so confident.Obi One has taught you well...

I like to use the 10g's new features (JAX-RPC, Soap, UDDI, etc) but I like to still sending Encripted and Signed messages. Anyone know if Xml Security is compatible with 10g or if there are another Library like Apache's one?

Developers who feel lost in the labyrinth of hype they can turn to a new site http://www.webservicesfaq.com devoted to UDDI, WSDL,SOAP, ebXML, and so on.
Here they'll learn how, while Web Services complements J2EE superbly, it is also an excellent integration platform for .NET technologies, and in fact for the transparent interoperability between the two, and between any other architectures that support the new Web Services standards.

  • Adobe Captivate 3 and SumTotal TotalLMS 7

    Hi
I published a similar topic a while ago regarding capitivate
    2 and sumtotal lms publishing.
I am currently awaiting the latest version of Capitvate,
version 3, and i am in serious need to any and all documentation
regarding how to compile captivate simulations with quizes to track
for SCORM 1.2 successfully and how to publish directly from
Capitvate 3. Does Cap3 have improved publishing capabilities for
    SumTotal LMS's?
When i upload the zip file compiled in Captivate the SumTotal
LMS does not regonize what the launch method should be and gives me
    the following options:
AICC 2.x HACP - currently this is the only launch option that
works but it does not track at all
    AICC 2.x JavaScript
    Generic Document
    Knowledge Document
    Macromedia Authorware
    Macromedia Coursebuilder
    SumTotal Content API
    SumTotal ToolBook
    WebEx
The LMS also prompts for a launch file. I need to know what
the best launch type is , and how to configure the zip file.
I have already referenced a document from this site -
UsingCaptivat2withSumTotal_72, are there any other similar
    documents regarding Captivate 3??
Please tell me Cap3 is more interoperable!!
All and any help much appreciated!
    LMSAdminer

    Hi,
I'm also looking for an easy way to post a Captivate 3 file
to SumTotal 7.2. As I understand the process:
First you have to set the options in the Quiz Preferences
dialog to SCORM 1.2. (Go to Quiz Preferences, select Enable
Reporting, click the Manifest button and select SCORM 1.2 from the
    Version drop-down box.)
Then when you publish the file you select Zip files as the
    output option.
The next part is tricky. SumTotal requires some extra text in
the manifest file and will not upload the file without it. You need
to open the manifest file, (copy the file and edit it out of the
zip file and then paste it back) and add the attached code. It has
to be written perfectly without any extra spaces. I am having
trouble with this, even using Dreamweaver to edit the XML in the
manifest file. My question is does anyone know how to do this
easily? And/or does anyone have a manifest file with this code in
it that they can share? I'm sure it would help a lot of people.
By the way, there is more information about SumTotal's SCORM
API on their CPC website. If you want to contact me, I can share
    with you what I know.
    Thanks!

  • OS X, SMB and offline files

    Hi all!
I'd like to ask how you handle the following with OS X Mavericks:
Assume you have a hierarchical storage management (HSM) system (also called "file system archiving" by some people) and OS X clients access this via, say, the SMB protocol. Now the challenge is that some files in your HSM are offline, which means they are not on disk but some other media, usually tape. OS X features like Quick Look trigger a recall of these files which is typically not a good idea because many files have to be read from tape which (a) takes time, and (b) questions HSM completely, because recalling the files will fill up your disk cache. Things get even worse if multiple users trigger file recalls.
Now SMB knows a file attribute called ATTR_OFFLINE, see e.g. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc246322.aspx which is used to indicate that a file is offline. However, it looks like Quick Look and friends do not check this flag. I'm aware of tools like ArchiveConnect, see e.g.
http://www.grouplogic.com/enterprise-file-sharing/mac-file-archiving-system/ that claim to improve the interoperability of OS X and HSM systems.
Any experience with this tool or other means to solve the problem? I'd like to see OS X to be more "HSM aware" which means, e.g., it cares about the offline attribute via SMB.
    Best regards, Dirk

    Hi Richard,
We are looking at file archiving here and have the same potential issues. We haven't evaluated this product, but it claims to solve the problem:

  • PEAP with Novell NDS and LDAP?

I was reading this Cisco Q&A doc (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_qanda_item0900aecd801764fa.shtml) that contained the following question and answer:
    Q. Can I use PEAP with LDAP or Novell NDS databases?
    A. Yes. PEAP provides interoperability with both LDAP and Novell NDS.
I was under the impression that LDAP and Netware only supported EAP-GTC, EAP-Fast (phase 2 only), or EAP-TLS???
    Can anyone comment?

Getting 802.1x to work with novell using PEAP w/ GTC is a slam dunk with some exceptions. I'm using Cisco ACS with Backend connection to NDS. If you have XP clients you can easily use the Cisco PEAP supplicant to allow connecting with EAP-GTC. I ran into problems with the mixture of cards and Client OS. I turned to Funk Odyssey Client to solve all my problems on the clients.
