Invoke method in another source file?

Hello,
I'm new to java programming (and OO in general), I feel that I have a basic understanding of OO design (just to give an idea of where I'm at).
My problem: I can't figure out how to access methods or instance variables in other source files (.java files) within the same package. Here's a couple examples of what I'm trying to do....
ex1.
MainFrame.java
public class MainFrame extends JFrame {
MainFrame mainFrame = new MainFrame();
mainFrame.setVisible(true);
~I have a button on this form that when clicked does this....
MainFrame.this.setVisible(false); *as a side note, I don't understand  exactly what this statement means, but it's the only way I could make it hide the frame (so feel free to help me on this too if you don't mind-the confusion is; to hide a label I can just say mylablename.setVisible(false) why do I have to say myframename.this.setVisible when I'm dealing with a Frame?)
NewEstimate estimate = new NewEstimate(); //inst. and show next frame
estimate.setVisible(true);
~NewEstimate is the name of the other java source file (NewEstimate.java)
so after clicking the button my new form loads, and I have another button that when clicked should close my estimate form and show mainFrame again, this is where my problem is....
I want to just dipose this form because I want it instaniated each time so I just want to dispose() this one so...
MainFrame.setVisible(true); //show the main frame again
dispose();
....I get the error MainFrame symbol not found and I have tried all kinds of ways like mypackagename.MainFrame.setVisible(true);
mainFrame.setVisible.setVisible(true);
MainFrame.mainFrame.setVisible(true);
all to no avail thus leading me to believe that one of those is correct but my problem is something else...
I also have the same problem when trying to invoke a method in another source file and the same when trying to evaluate a variable...
if in source1.java I have somewhre String name = mike;
then in source2.jave I have if name equals mike do something, I get the same errors; symbol cannot be resolved.
Thanks for taking the time to help.
Mike

Thanks for your reply. Here is a test case that resembles what I'm trying to do. Note that I don't want to dipose of Frame1, (my reason is that I only want to initialize it 1 time (when the program is started), so I only want to hide it when it calls Frame2. Then when the user clicks the button on Frame2, dispose of Frame2 and show Frame1 again. The specific error I'm getting in Frame2.java is in the line frame1.setVisible(true) and is frame1 symbol cannot be resolved. That is my MAIN problem (main priority at this point) but I am also having a problem evaluating or referncing variables in Frame1.java from Frame2.java; I'm assuming though that the problems are related.

  • How to call method in another swf file

    Hi. I am at the moment making a website in Flash 8. The
    website consists of a main file with the buttons and then
    additional files for each page. Each of the buttons uses code
    similar to this:
    content.loadMovie("home page.swf");
    where content is the movieclip I am using to load the swf
    file into. In the main file I have a search box where a user can
    type some search terms. I have written some code that will search
    through the text field(s) on the page and highlight any words that
    appear matching the search terms. The only problem is that I cannot
    get to the text fields on the other files. So what I want to be
    able to do is attach some code to the search button that will call
    a method in another swf file using the parameters that I the user
    has specified in the search box. How would I go about doing this?
    Any help is much appreciated
    JM Young

    Place functions in the external swf. Then you can call them
    through the container clip
    content.yourFunction(args);
    Realize however, you cannot call code in an external swf
    until the frames with the functions are loaded. Timing would be an
    issue if the user can beat the loading clock or if you have code
    that is executed automatically after you start the load.
    So if timing becomes an issue, use MovieClipLoader and the
    onLoadInit method.

  • Calling a method from another Java file.

    I think I'm doing this right, but I'm obviously going wrong somewhere.
    In order to not have one big long java file, I've created one main one to execute the program, and another to do some of the functions. I'm using eclipse, btw.
    In the main file, I have
    currentTB = getActiveTB(playerArea);If it works, it should get send the player area variable to the getActiveTB method, and store the value it returns in the currentTB variable, right?
    In the other file, I have;
    package scenes;
    public class sceneIndex {
         private TerrainBlock getActiveTB(String areaCode) {
              TerrainBlock tBlock = new TerrainBlock();
                     **DOES STUFF**
              return tBlock;
    }I have it set up so the second file is in the source folder "resources" and the package "scenes." The problem is I'm not calling it properly. I'm missing something simple, I think. The only error I'm getting is;
    The method getActiveTB(String) is undefined...
    Where am I screwing up?
    EDIT: Yeah, I'm a rookie here trying to figure it out on my own. My computer science courses, so far, conveniently all consist of just one big java file. Easier to write, sure, but not very efficient/organized.

    Yeah, so this is still pissing me off. I'm not sure what else to do. I've tried this a million different ways, in both eclipse and netbeans. Whatever. Here's the code, I'd love it if someone could point out the boneheaded mistake I'm making. I'm getting a little frustrated at being stuck on such a simple problem.

  • Getting all the members (variables, methods AND method bodies) of a java source file

    For a project I want to programmatically get access to the members of java source file (member variables, methods etc) as well as to the source code of those members. My question is what is the best method for this? So far I have found the following methods:
    Use AST's provided by the Java Source API and Java Tree API, as discussed in the following posts:
    http://today.java.net/pub/a/today/2008/04/10/source-code-analysis-using-java-6-compiler-apis.html
    http://weblogs.java.net/blog/timboudreau/archive/2008/02/see_java_code_t.html
    http://netbeans.dzone.com/announcements/new-class-visualization-module
    This has the disadvantage that the classes actually have to be compilable. When I look at the Netbeans Navigator view however, it provides me with a nicely formatted UI list, regardless of the "compilable" state of the class.
    Thus I started looking at how to do this... The answer appears to be through the use of tools such as JavaCC: https://javacc.dev.java.net/
    ANTLR: http://www.antlr.org/
    which are lexers and parsers of source code. However, since the Navigator panel already does this, couldn't I use part of this code to get me the list of variables and methods in a source file? Does the Navigator API help in this regard?
    Another route seems to be through tools such as
    BeautyJ: http://beautyj.berlios.de/
    which run on top of JavaCC if I am correct, and which has the ability to provide a clean view on your java code (or an XML view). However, BeautyJ does not seem to be too actively developed, and is only j2se1.4 compatible.
    I hope someone can shed a light on the best way to go about what I want to achieve. Somebody already doing this?
    (I crossposted on the Netbeans forums too, hope this is OK...)

    I'm currently developing a LaTeX editor(MDI) and I do the same thing, but I don't know what exactly do you need.

  • Does a member class have to be within the same source file?

    Hi there,
    I have this application that extensively uses two classes. The main class setsup the GUI, and the second main class is responsible for handling all of the actions that arise from the GUI.
    I could have done this by making all of my handler methods be of the first main class, but this class really is just for the GUI setup, the logic doesn't fit into this class' behaviour.
    The class that handles the GUI actions is required to use the fields of the main class e.g. to get values of a text field. The problem is that since the class that handles the actions is getting very big, I would kind of like to move this class into a different source file - because currently it is a member class of the first one, so that it can access all of its fields.
    Is there some way that I can move this handler class into another source file, and still have it access all of the fields of the main GUI class - without making the fields public, or using millions of get/set methods? Also, I can't use inheritance because the both the GUI class creates an instance of the handler class in its constructor, and so leads to an infinite loop when trying to instantiate the GUI class.
    Can I ask.. would a static class or something be of use here? Do they exist? I'm confused as to how to do this without getting the mother of all source files (in size that is - nothing to do with cooking or baking).
    - Anyway, thanks in advance for any help that you could give me -
    BYEE, Edd.

    You can't have an inner class that is not in the same source file. However, you could use package-protected (default) access to give another class in the same package access to things without making them public. Actually, that's how inner classes are actually compiled. Package-protected access is underused IMHO. It's a great tool that most people (including myself) are suspicious of at first.

    Hi
    i have an external source code file. How can i use this external file in another source file?
    Thanks for help.

    ehmmmm.....
    import my.package.for.ExternalOr something like

    extInstance.doInstanceStuff();You could ofcourse also try to do the tutorial, just for the fun of it :)

  • How to invoke another Java file in Java program?

    Hello all,
    Now I am building a commnity of agents that can talk in Java, I have another Java-Based dialogue system to handle the dialogue between the agents. But I don'y know how to invoke the Java dialogue system file in the agent class.
    Is there any methods can call another .java file in a Java program?
    Help!!!!!please

    Yep, vaguest of the vaguey vague vague.
    Anyhoo,
    I'm guessing you want to call a method from a different class?
    Assuming you have the "Runner" class and then "Agent1", "Agent2", etc.
    Agent1 whatever = new Agent1();

    This is pretty basic stuff but i can't seem to get it right. I am calling a method from another file. The other file IS located in the same folder BUT when i compile i get errors

    The method name is "sieve" the file name is "PrimeSieve2008" and "limit" is the variable in brackets in the real method.

              for (int j = 0; j<PRIMES.length; j++) {

    Is "int sieve = PrimeSieve2008.sieve(limit)" the wrong way to call a file?
    Thanks a million,

    I really am clueless here.in this one you are passing in limit.
    in the other one you are getting limit from somewhere outside of main.

    Hello,
    Change the FCC configuration.. as described in below.
    Record set Strcture : *,999
    Record Sets per message as : 1
    To eliminate header : Document offset : 1
    Try this by putting message protocol as file content convertion.
    Thx
