IPhone SDK - Ideas for pop-up menus

I have a screen where there are quite a few items which are of the multiple-choice type. In other platforms we use a combo box (pick lists) to do this.
On the iPhone SDK the only thing that comes close is the UIPickerView which is too heavy IMHO.
Currently i am using a full screen pop-up with a UITableView inside it for the menu items. It is functional but not cool.
I guess i could create a view which is rendered as a pop-up and add it as a subview to the parent and make it behave like a pop-up menu.
Has anyone tried do implement one? I would greatly appreciate your ideas on this.

Yes, once you master the tutorial on creating these type of
menus, you can
have them as dropdowns, or flyouts (as they are commonly
called when
attached to a vertical menu system).

What is a good extenstion for pop up menus?

I recently created a site in Fireworks that used pop up menus
but then found out later that they don't work on Internet Explorer
(you can view the site at www.caspre.com it is the very last menu
item at the end called "about cascade"). What I need to know is if
there is a good extension for dreamweaver (or fireworks) that won't
cause problems in ie. It should be noted that the pop up menu works
great in Firefox.

Is the iphone sdk only for MAC OSX

I was wondering if the iphone sdk is only for Mac OSX and if it there is a way to get it for Windows XP

The SDK is only for Intel Macs running at least 10.5.2. It is not possible to run on other systems. Sorry.

to update their software or browsers. We're trying to develop a new
site, and although we've had CS3 here since last year, it just
grayed out our ability to use "Show pop-up menu" as an option this
week.
According to Adobe, Spry is only supported on the following
browsers: Firefox, IE6 and higher, Safari 2, and Opera 9.
According to our web stats, our users use: Netscape 4.x
(32.92%), MSIE 6.x (23.08%), Netscape 7x. (8.62%), AOL (4.16%),
Firefox 1.x (0.34%), Opera 3.x (0.13%), *Unknown (29.08%)
I can't use a function that only 25% of my site visitors can
see!
Any suggestions? I'm desperate!

This has always been the case. CS3 will only enable that
option on a page
that already has one of those nasty menus on it. In other
words, the effect
has been taken on a long walk off a short pier. To see why I

IPhone SDK - test for sound input availability?

Should one try to determine if the device has a microphone available before calling AudioQueueNewInput and AudioQueueStart? I didn't see any mention of this requirement in the Audio Queue Services Programming Guide. (But in ancient MacOS history, one used to at least check the gestaltSoundAttr for the gestaltPlayAndRecord flags before trying to use the Sound Manager...)
I have some audio queue input code which seems to work on the SDK simulator; what will happen if someone tries to run this code on an iPod Touch, which doesn't have a mic (AFAIK)? And if someone attaches a mic to the iPod dock connector, can this be detected and used?

Good Question. I did just that. It seems that the iPod touch thinks that the input device is present and the call to AudioQueueStart returns 0. Good or bad, I don't know. I assume that this function should trigger the callback function to the delegate, but it only works in the simulator. This can be seen with the Speak Here app that is posted for examples. The debugger console shows a call to updateUserInterfaceOnAudioQueueStateChange when recording begins and when recording ends. On the iPod touch the call to the delegate is only done when recording stops.
I would also like to know how to test for an input device.

I need to learn how to do sub menus on a vertical navigation
bar and I don't know where to start as the books I have do not go
into that. If someone could direct me to a tutorial, or where I can
find tutorials, that would be great.

[iPhone SDK] UITabBarController popsToRootOnButtonPress - pop to an index?

---WARNING: long-ish description ahead!---
Hey everyone, the UITabBarController's 'popsToRootOnButtonPress' property makes it so that when you touch the tabBar item, if that item's viewcontroller is a navigationController, it "auto pops" to the root view.
This is to simulate behavior like in the Contacts app. It seems to work as advertised.
However, IF you have multiple contact groups, you'll notice a "Groups" button on the Contacts tab view. Now:
1) Go to the contacts tab
2) observe that you have a "groups" on the top left
3) tap a contact to drill down a view
4) tap the contacts tabbaritem to "auto pop"
Notice now that it actually pops to the contacts tab view, NOT the groups view, even though the groups view is the root.
Anyone figure out how to do this? My guess is that they are somehow manipulating the view controller stack to fool it to thinking that the Contacts view is the root. The reason I say that (instead of saying that it's off a different SDK), is because notice how when you are "auto popping" back, the "Groups" button doesn't slide in, it "pops" into view as it is sliding back to Contacts.
Apologies if i've made this long winded. Basically I'd like to have similar functionality where in one of my views, I need to have the "auto pop" to go to rootView + 1.

I found a lot of IB initialization is done with initWithCoder, not initWithNibName. Though, it's weird how a bunch of docs seem to indicate the later is necessary.

Changing fonts for Pop up menus

Hi all,
Could any tell me if there is a way to change the choose of
fonts you can use on the pop up menu options?
I am trying to have Arial as the first choice but my current
option does not allow this and i cannto find a way of changing it.

Under the Appearance tab, click the font menu ad select
Verdana, Arial,
Helvetica, sans-serif. Highlight Verdana with your cursor and
delete it.

Problems with blu-ray pop-up menus

I made the mistake of tacking this question/problem onto another similar post, so here it is again for some:
I got this error message near the end of the disc build:
Blu-ray Error: "fatal error". Code: "6", Note: "Graphics buffer underflows. - Failed to multiplex with maximum IG PTS: 54900000 (in 90kHz).
The blu-ray project I am working on is an 87 min live concert with about 8 other much shorter timelines. The main menu has 6 buttons with a motion background. There are few submenus as well, but the problem came when I started making pop-up menus for the various timelines.
This is the first project where I really had to explore the possibliltes and limitations of Encore's pop-up menus. I burned a test disc with just a basic pop-up menu to see how the menu's opacity would look over the final video. All the video assets were set to to transcode "Automatically". All audio assets are blu-ray compliant Surround ac3's or 16-bit stereo WAV's so could be left as "Don't Transcode". This disc burned perfectly.
I then went through the pretty involved process of making a final version of the main pop-up menus. The main concert's pop-up menu has 5 pages (including page 0). There are specific pop-up menus for other timelines, but those have no more than 2 pages. None of the menus have more than 10 buttons.
I tried to burn the disc, and it came back with the error above. After reading some other posts, I thought it was worth a try to delete the AuthorScriptHDMVSessions folder before starting a new burn since it was already filled with files from my test burn. That didn't help.
Any insight or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

After countless tests and research, I finally have a successfully burned blu-ray with WORKING multi-page pop-up menus (that I am happy with). Thank you to all the people who gave theoretical guidance and suggestions in emails and other posts. There has been no shortage of oddities and obstacles to overcome when just trying to make a simple blu-ray. Unfortunately, I did not have the time to accurately pinpoint what was causing the original error message. The project just needed to get done.
The main pop-up menu has 4 pages, with 13 buttons on each page. Only about 5 - 9 of the "buttons" on each page are actual buttons that link anywhere. The other buttons on each page only serve as the remaining pieces of the menu's background and cannot be accessed on the final disc. Totally ridiculous way to make the backgrounds for pop-up menus, but it works.
Some of the other things I learned regarding pop-up menus + Encore misc:
1. If at all possible, totally create a menu .psd BEFORE bringing it into an Encore project. Make the button order in the .psd what you want it to end up being in the end (bottom layer is button 1). If you start editing and saving order after it has been brought in, Encore will almost always revert it back to some strange (possibly original) button order. You will spend all your time re-routing button navigation and changing their numbers, only to find out later that Encore has changed it all back without notice.
2. As many people state, it is best to have Encore do as little thinking as possible. All of my button groups originally had Text Layers within them with some fx applied. I merged each text layer down into that button's background layer to essentially rasterize the text with the fx applied. Each (+) button group therefore only had a higlight layer and a background layer. After doing this for all the buttons, the .psd file size was greatly reduced. Naturally I saved a copy before going through the merging process in case I ever had to go back and edit the text.
3. Originally the background for the pop-up menus were made from a rectangle cut-out of the background of the main menu. This was the width of the frame and around 1/5 of the height. I had changed the opacity to around 60%, and cut up the pieces to go with their respective buttons. For the final disc, I just made a shape with the Rounded Rectangle Tool, and filled it with a solid colour. It is probably only about half the size of the original pop-up menu's background. I changed its opacity as well, but then merged it with a blank layer so Encore didn't have to think about the opacity setting.
4. I encoded all the video elements BEFORE they were brought into the project. There are some issues with the way the file sizes are interpretted by Encore, but I won't trust it to encode anything again.
5. For some reason Encore wants to transcode 16-bit, 48.0 kHz .aiff files when making a blu-ray, but 16-bit, 48.0 kHz .wav files do NOT need trancoding (for both dvds and blu-rays).

I have seen previous versions mentioned in a pop up message before on iCloud.com, but I'm not really sure at all how it would help, as I couldn't get it to do anything.
The best advice I have at this time is to back up your work on your iOS device by regularly saving it to iTunes, if anything goes wrong you can then either load it into the numbers app again on the device or recover it via iTunes on your computer.
My syncs are immediate, I never get chance to see if it works in the background, sorry.

Preview Pop-Up Menus with third-party Player for mac

Hi, everyone,
Does anyone have an idea, how i could preview my pop-up menus without burning and waisting a BD every time??
I just downloaded two different free BluRay players for mac, they both dont seem to have the option to open a Pop-up menu. (I really wonder, why that is so, i cannot imagine that this is so hard to develop…)
anyway, how do you guys do that?? is there any software out there that can do this?? I am at a point where i feel i would even pay for a software or get a windows software and run it via crossover, if nessesary...
Please help, i really want to preview my BluRay before i burn it on disc.

Two methods:
I use Total Media Theater (5 or 6). It is not free, and I do not know if it is available for Mac. Popup menus and slideshow operation is the most challenging for emulators (which is what computer DVD/BD players are).
Burn to a DVD+RW. This is essential as a test step to burn to some disk.

Downloaded iPhone SDK, ran Xcode, no option for iPhone - Mac OS only!

Hi everyone,
I downloaded the free iPhone SDK and ran the installer. Whenever I launch Xcode however, there is no tab for iPhone applications - only Mac OS. I took a peak inside the packages folder in the download and spotted files named "iphone SDK", so I'm confused.
Any idea on why Xcode runs but there is no option for iPhone?

On my PowerPC G5 I have a similar issue where I installed Mac OS X 10.5.6, but after installing the iphone SDK I do not see any refs to iphone when in Xcode.
I even tried the suggestion here:

Iphone sdk for iphone os 2.1 final dmg does not install

Hi all,
opening the dmg file
iphone sdk for iphone os 2.1 final dmg
fails with the error -4960.
A small message box pops up defining this error.
Is it because I have a PowerPC still so that developing apps for the iPhone / iPod Touch is not possible, or is it due to a download problem? (I resumed the download a couple of times in Safari)

If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact AppleCare(or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.
