IPhoto 7.1.5 Update Killed Picture Import

I just updated to iPhoto 7.1.5 when it showed up in Software Update. Last night, the first time since the update, I tried to load pictures from my PowerShot S1IS. This is the same camera, computer & cable that I have used to load thousands of pictures without a hitch.
The first time I plugged in the USB cable, iPhoto saw the camera, showed the new pictures, started the import, asked if I wanted to erase the camera & then displayed a message that it couldn't import them because they were an unrecognizable file type. It listed all 7 pictures on the camera & they all were JPG which is exactly the same as the other 4K plus pictures I already have in iPhoto, most from this same camera.
I unplugged the camera & tried again & this time it never saw the camera. I read in a discussion to try deleting the iPhoto preference file which I did & on the next try the initial process above repeated itself with the same wrong file type message. I deleted the preference file once more & now it does nothing. It never sees the camera.
I connected my iPhone & it sees & loads new pictures fine. I tried both the iPhone & the camera on both USB ports so I know they are both fine.
Any ideas on why it has suddenly had a falling out with my camera?
Thanks for any help!

Tony:
It could be that the card has been compromised and iPhoto doesn't recognize it. Open Image Capture and see if you can upload the photos to a folder on the desktop. If that can be done reformat the card with the camera, take a couple of test shots and try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto 11 just lost my my pictures - after the 9.0.1 update

Ran 9.0.1 update this morning. Imported photos from Halloween party last night (set to delete photos from card after import). I could see the pictures. Closed iPhoto. Came back. Event, pictures all gone. "Last import" shows pictures I took a week ago.
W-T-F Apple. I want my pictures back. I want my old iPhoto back. Take iPhoto 11 and shove it.

I haven't upgraded to iPhoto '11 yet. Just browsing around the discussions to see what type of issues people are having.
For what it's worth - I never let iPhoto delete photos from my CF cards. I have about 6 cards (courtesy of a 3-week computerless trip) and I'll only reformat the first one when the sixth one is full.

  • Problem with iPhoto pictures imported into Aperture 3

I recently put together few thousand pictures I had in iPhoto with several other thousands I had on Aperture 3.
I just realized the pictures I imported from iPhoto have all a litle exclamation mark with an arrow just like this:
When I try to export any of these images, or create a book, or email them it gives me an error message just like this:
When I imported the pictures, I drag them into Aperture. Not sure what happened and why the original files were not imported as well.
    Can anyone help? Thx!

This looks like your iPhoto Library may have been a referenced library - check, if the iPhoto preferences "Advanced" settings are set to "Importing: Copy items into the iPhoto Library". If this option has been unchecked, when you imported to iPhoto, your iPhoto Library references the images and does not include them. And if you import a referenced library to Aperture these images also will be referenced in Aperture.
How exactly did you import from iPhoto to aperture, and what are your iPhoto and Aperture versions? Where are the libraries located that you importet? On an external volume?
Try, if the links become active, when you connect the external volume again.

  • Why does get-attachment 1aspx appear on pictures imported from Iphoto

Pictures imported from Iphoto  into Imovie not as clear as originals. There is a note with each picture ...get-attachment 1aspx. Could this be the reason? What does this message mean?

iPhoto shows you the image at full resolution. If the image is tiny then it's tiny.
You can magnify an image by 300%. In edit mode hold the option key and tap the 2 or 3 button.

  • Iphoto shows a window asking me to import pictures every time I open it

Every time that i open IPHOTO a window appears asking me to import 7 pictures that haven't been imported, if i import the pictures it will create a folder of recovered pictures with not content, if i select the option not import the pictures it will create a folder but this time in the folder of images, every time i open iphoto a folder will be created as "photo library recovered pictures _2" or 3 and so on but there wont have any content. how can i stop this?

I'm very new to iPhoto and this forum and have just found this post, which seems to be describing the same problem I now have. I have tried your advice (I think!) although I can't seem to find any reference to 'show package contents' - I can find the folder called 'recovered photos1', then '..2', then '...3', etc, as it creates a new one every time I open iPhoto. I drag that to the desktop, launch iPhoto, and it asks me the same question about importing photos (does this twice) before going away. Then I drag the folders into the trash, empty trash, all good, but the problem continues whenever I open iPhoto and we start back at 'recovered photos1' all over again. I am likely not following your instructions properly - any chance that you could explain it again for a complete novice?
Cheers and thanks in advance for any help you could provide,
    Andy

  • The photos imported in iPhoto cants be seen in my "picture fold".What is to be done so that all the photos can be seen in the picture folderr

I am not able to see the pictures imported directly to Iphoto library in "Picture Folder"( Picture folder show only the libraray and not photos.  Because of this I am not able to attach photos to my email.

The following is from a post by Terence Devlin on accessing photos for use outside of iPhoto.  It's the definitive treatise on the subject.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation   which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3.Show File:
    a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    b. On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • I had iPhoto ask me to update and all my pictures disappeared. HELP!

I had iPhoto ask me to update and all my pictures disappeared. HELP!  I am desperate,  Thank you, Lindsay

We need to know more to be able to help, Lindsay.
Did you update to iPhoto 9.6?
And the photos vanished after you upgraded the iPhoto Library?
Did iPhoto crash during the upgrade?
Where is your iPhoto Library stored? Is it on your system drive in your Pictures folder or do you keep the iPhoto library on an external disk?
If the iPhoto Library is on your system drive in your Pictures folder, select the iPhoto Library in the Finder, ctrl-click or right-click it and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu. A Finder window will open, showing you, what is there inside your iPhoto Library.
Do you see folders "Masters" and "Old Masters"?  If there is a folder "Old Masters", look inside. Are there any photos inside?

  • IPhoto gets stuck in the middle of importing pictures

I am using IPhoto '09 and whenever I try to import photos from my IPhone 4s, it always lags and gets stuck after importing around half of the photos (1000+) and the loading bar just remains there, no longer moving, the rest of the pictures fail to get imported. It can even import up to two thirds of the pictures on my IPhone and then just remains stuck there. I have tried to restart the import several times but it always ends up getting stuck halfway and my photos don't get imported. Is there a way to solve this issue?

How much free space on your Hard Disk?
Can you access the photos with Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) ?

  • 2 things: iPhoto isn't automatically copying all my imported photos into an iPhoto album folder AND ever since i upgraded my MacBook 120GB to Snow Leopard, iTunes won't recognize my iPhone.

So i have a 120GB MacBook that's about 4 years old (just updated to Snow Leopard--been working in Iraq, i'm a little behind).
Never had a problem with it.
I also have an iPhone 4 which i've had for about a year (up-to-date software as of about a month ago).
Never had a problem with it.
I've had iTunes for years of course (up-to-date).
    Never had a problem.
    1.
Now my iTunes won't recognize my iPhone since the Snow Leopard update.
iPhoto will recognize my phone, but iTunes won't.
Went through all the preferrences and i can't find anything that isn't set properly.
iTunes Helper is used during startup.
    Everything seems fine.
    Any help?
    2.
I use a WD external hard drive to back my Mac up every week or so.
I recently realized that half of my pictures from iPhoto are not copied to the external.
    They haven't been transfering over.
So i snooped through my folders and as it turns out, iPhoto hasn't been copying the pictures i import from my iPhone to iPhoto and saving them as .jpg files in the pictures folder (or iPhoto album or whatever) like i think it's supposed to.
My pictures folder has approx half of all my pictures in it, meaning at some point (probably 2 years ago) iPhoto stopped making the file copies of my imported pictures.
    I do not know why.
No idea how to fix it.
If i were able to fix that (with your help), would all the pictures that haven't been copied automatically copy to my pictures folder once i had the issue resolved or would there be a lot of dragging and dropping?
I've been clumsily and sloppily copying all my pictures to a new folder on my desktop and manually transferring that folder to a thumb drive (which i keep in my pocket) and my external (just so i have them in some form) in case my computer crashes or a mortar shell lands on my room and blows my computer up.
Can anyone please help me with any of this?
I can't just stoll down to the Apple store to ask the Genius Bar (I'm in Baghdad) and i don't have Apple Care so no one will help me on the phone when i call Apple.
    Thanks so much.

    hey mill1640,
Did you ever get your iPhone to register with iTunes? I just upgraded as well to Snow Leopard, and my my isn't recognized at all also.
If you did get this resolved, I would appreciate a little suggestion in the right direction.
    Many thanks,
    Josh

  • IPhoto 09 Freeze While Updating Library.....Everytime

I recently bought a Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHz and installed iLife 09. On my previous computer (Powerbook 12" 1GHz) I was running iPhoto 2.0.1. I had copied that entire HD to an external drive. I plugged in the external drive to my new Powerbook and copied the User>Pictures>iPhoto Library Folder to appropriate location on the new HD. When starting up iPhoto 09, I got the message that it needed to update the library. Every attempt I made resulted in iPhoto freezing with the "Updating photo library...Time remaining" message. It often froze with the same amount of time remaining. I have tried several remedies: I deleted the com.apple.iphoto.plist from the preferences folder. I also tried to use BatChmod after following instructions in another forum, but that didn't seem to help. I also downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and used its rebuild function. This appeared to work and all the pictures are present (minus about thirty, but I think they were duplicates), but all 7,000+ got imported with the same date (DEC 31 2000) and were randomly arranged into about a dozen Events. Also, none of the Albums were transported. I don't have time to individually rearrange all the photos and rebuild all the albums. I would be happy solving either one of the problems. Thanks.

Thanks for responding Larry. I tried that, but unfortunately it did not work.
Based on what I read in some other threads, I tried forcing iPhoto to rebuild the library by holding command-option while starting iPhoto, but that did the exact same thing. I ended up downloading iPhoto Library Manager and using that to rebuild the library, which worked. There was one photo that could not be copied over (corrupted file or something), so that's probably what was making iPhoto hang. Luckily my mom had a backup on a CD.

  • IPhoto Library disappeared after update

Just updated to 10.4.9. It appeared to go fine, but when I opened iPhoto, the message came that "Photo Library not Found". Used Spotlight, but can't locate anything. In fact, it seems that the whole Pictures Folder has vanished.
Interestingly, my wife also uses this computer and her iPhoto Library is still in her Pictures Folder, which is just where it should be.
I do have my photos backed up on a DVD, so I'm not totally crazy here, but i would like to know what's going on. Jeez, I'm glad I did back up the photos. I hadn't gotten around to backing up some more recent ones, but i do have the bulk of them on DVD. Anybody have any thoughts?
If no one has any idea where I might locate the photo library, I'll then be asking for help in how to create a new library from my DVD.
    Thanks.
    imac G5 (iSight) 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iPhoto 5.04

    I would start by:
    • Booting from your Mac's OSX Install Disc and running Disc Utility off of that. This will give you the options to Verify Disk and Repair Disk, possibly repairing a damaged directory structure.
    • Alternatively, you can boot into Single User Mode (hold down Command+S after the chime) and type "fsck -f" (sans quotes). This will check your disk for possible data or directory corruption, but won't repair it; you'll still need to boot off of the OSX Disc for that.
    • If you've got it, you could use a third-party utility such as Disk Warrior to repair your directory structure, as this can sometimes do a better job than Disk Utility.
Great job on saving your photos with a backup, but I surely wouldn't put them back until you're sure that there's no data corruption on your drive. Also, make sure you back up anything important for ALL USERS before you Verify or Repair the disk. Corrupt data is never fun...
    Best of luck,
    Chris

  • IPhoto don't read library after iPhone import

Since I update from Snow Leopard to Lion, all my pictures and photos are gone after iPhone picture import.
My iPhoto Library can't be read after import pictures from the iPhone 4. So, I try to recover the library but the process (I wait 8 hours in 100% completed).
    iPhoto '11: version 9.1.5 (615)
    iPhone 4: iOS 4.3.4
    MacBook: Pro 15" / 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto Crashes so I updated and it still crashes

I have the latest version of iPhoto... just updated today because it was crashing out as soon as I launched it. The update had no effect.
I can create a new photo library and that works a treat with no photos in it however I would like access to my 10,000 plus photo collection that I have.
This issues has come from out of the blue...
I am not technical... Apple stuff should just work... right?
I bought new iPhoto for iCloud usage, it worked fine and now it would seem my library is not working.
Can I create a new library and import the old library in there?
HELP.. why is it not working.

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library.  If you can then import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists by opening and closing the library.
If the problem does no appear with the new library then your current library is the culprit. In that case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the above does'nt help make sure you don't have an 3ivx plugin in either the HD/Library/Quicktime or User/Library/Quicktime folders.

  • I have tried VERY unsuccessfully to install iphoto 9.2.3 update...it says it has successfully updated - then on opening says: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X.

I have tried VERY unsuccessfully to install the new iphoto 9.2.3 update.
I have installed it several times both from the appstore and from Apple Support downloads...it says it has 'successfully updated' - then on opening iphoto, a dialogue box pops up and says:
iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
Insane...I have all my updates including Lion 10.7.3 why does APPLE KEEP SENDING BETAS AS A REAL PRODUCT?
Does anyone know how to copy over a backup from a twinned drive Backup? What files etc.
    Thanks tons...

    Thanks Terence,
I did get it working finally...and your last advice was what I needed.
I am embarassed that I was an early adopter...SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER and read the problems before creating some for myself.
This was an excercise in frustration, because of the obtuse division between the appstore and Apple Support downloads... it was a bit of a circuitous route...strange that with all the security reciepts and tracking that Apple goes to to prevent piracy... which Steve by his own admission used to build Apple...
Why aren't the server scripts smart enough to say…”HEY DUMMY you can't use this download because you purchased the last iPhoto upgrade from the appstore...and… DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME and precious data BUDGET downloading this gargantuan file which will eat 20% of your expensive 5Gb monthly data allotment!!!…and NOT WORK…only pretend to…and then foul your system….kill your productivity and turn your hair whiter…even worse than LION did.
I am just so antagonized by the inept scripts in recent installations that don't do a diagnostic before allowing installation that is going to corrupt things...I had less effort and frustration when I ran my ATARI with a MAC emulator...rarely lost any productivity to nonsense.
I AM TIRED OF BETAs dressed as products...designed and rushed out for Apple toys that once were tools of the creative trade...COREL...may still have a chance at a comeback if Apple keeps pumping out toys instead of the venerable tools we once adored as income enhancers.

  • How do I stop iphoto from creating events automatically when I import photos from an external hard drive?

IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos and when I merge events and then go to finder>all images, I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....I try to delete the extra copies but then the albums or events also get affected, even if there is one copy of each photo left in all images...have someone had this problem?

You don't have a problem at all.
IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos
This is how iPhoto works. Every photo is in an Event. Events are the basic organisation of the Library. Every import means at least one new Event. Yes you can merge Events after import and so on, but there is at least one Event created at each import.
I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....
No it hasn't. It hs created versions of the photos, not copies. There will be a couple of thumbnails  for viewing in the iPhoto Window plus the Master and then a edited version for pics that are modified. The icons for each of these may be similar but they are not copies - for a start they are different sizes - and all are required for iPhoto to work.
    go to finder>all images
Don't. This is simply a list of all the images on your computer. It makes no account or allowance for the purpose of these images. Really, if you're using iPhoto ignore this because if you
I try to delete the extra copies
Then you are trashing your Library.
So, this is how iPhoto works, there is no problem and stay away from All Images.
