IPhoto Shuffle Slideshow not Random

When I try to make a slideshow of my entire iPhoto library on random on my iPod, I find that it is not random. Rather, it tends to use only photos from close to the date of the photo I start the slideshow on. For example, if I select a photo from March 2005, I get photos randomly from roughly the first few months of that year, but if I go to the most recent photo and start the slideshow, I tend to get only photos from the last few months. Any thoughts? I would like truly random pix from the whole library.

I had this problem after updating to iPhoto '11 v.9.2. This is how I solved it.
     1. Quit iPhoto and reopened while holding down option and command. These options appear.
     2. Selected 2 boxes: Rebuild small thumbnails and rebuild all thumbnails and clicked Rebuild. This did not solve the problem.
     3. Repeated step 1. then selected repair permissions and hit Rebuild. This solved the problem.

  • Photo slide show "shuffle" is not random

I have over 10,000 photos on my ipod touch and they are in multiple folders.  When I view a slide show on shuffle of my "Photo Library" (which contains all of the photos), the order is DEFINITELY not random.  Approximately 90% or more of the photos shown are all from the same folder, and the rest seem random (although even the other 10% seem skewed towards a particular folder).
It's only been happening since a recent OS update, not sure which one though.
Has anyone else noticed this?  Any way to fix it?

No one else is having this problem, or has a solution?
If the same problem happened with your music collection, it would be like having 9 songs from one artist, then 1 from another during a shuffle play.
Can someone please post the link to where I can make a suggestion/comment to Apple?  Thanks.

  • Large itunes library, shuffle 3G, not random loading

It was my understanding that if you plug 3G shuffle into iTunes library that is larger than size of the shuffle then the system will randomly fill the shuffle with any songs in main library until the shuffle runs out of room. When I plug my 3G shuffle (4GB) into my iTunes (library of 10,000 songs), the songs that transfer are not random. Most of the songs are from artists early in the alphabet and sometimes entire albums get transferred. I realize that statistically this could actually be random, but it seems highly unlikely. I know I could create a playlist and sync from only that, but that defeats the purpose of wanting truly random from huge library.
Is anyone familiar with this issue? Can you help? Offer advice? Thanks in advance.

    First Question:
How do I "selectively" synch music onto the ATV given I have more GB worth of data than the ATV capacity? Do I need to remove some sub folders from the iTunes directory? I would like to keep the reference data in the iTunes browser and not remove it.
You can choose which playlists get synced to the tv, use playlists to collect all the tunes you want synced.
    Second question:
I tried streaming over the weekend by reconnnecting iTunes to my PC, and the the "loading library" messge was displayed for well over 8 hours without my being able to access any photos or music. I guessed that this was because of the size of the library. Is this typical?
At 8 hours it won't be anything to do with the size of the library.
The size of a library can make a difference to the time it takes a library to load but only in terms of maybe taking a minute or longer instead of 15 seconds or so. Actually it's the size of the library database file that counts here and not the size of all the content. For example my content occupies
1.7 TB but my database is around 22 MB, I have around 10,000 tunes and 1,000 videos of one kind or another, but if your 220 GB of content is all music you may have 40,000 tunes and a database of around 80 MB.
I am connected via Linksys Powerline, hard wired ethernet over my AC lines. Synching works well this way, but I am wondering if streaming does not do so well over this type of connection.
If I'm not mistaken AC uses one of these and I don't think he has mentioned any problems with.

  • Party Shuffle is not random

I have Itunes for Mac Version 7.4.2 (4). Party Shuffle has stopped randomizing the songs and I get whole albums instead of random songs. I have preferences set to randomize songs and have slid the slider to "less Likely".
Actually, Party Shuffle has stopped responding altogether and changing the source and Refresh does nothing.
It was working fine. This just started happening. HELP!
    Gitbo

I am having the same exact problem and i have tried all of the above recommendations but everytime i try to refresh the shuffle list it goes back to the same two albums. The albums are the ones that i just recently added, a few days ago, it plays the same two albums over and over again and it just randomly started doing it, I looked at teh list one minute and it was fine the next minute it was just those two albums and i cannot figure it out. When i try to shuffle songs from the library, the same thing happens, it just plays those two albums.

  • IPhoto Bug - Slideshows start randomly when browsing library

Over the last month I've noticed an irritating bug occurring on a random basis - sometimes every 5 mins, sometimes once or twice a week. I will be browsing the photo library or using the Faces feature, for example, and all of a sudden a Slideshow begins playing. I have no interest in the Slideshow function to be honest and I haven't used it before.
I don't think a keyboard shortcut is triggering this, although it could be a glitch with the wireless keyboard. Alternatively, I wondered if it could be a permissions problem - I tried repairing the permissions in DIsk Utility and that hasn't made a difference.
Also of note, I have a glitch with my iTunes - that also starts up randomly and plays music from time to time. I quit the program, remove it from the dock, close associated programs and still - minutes later - it plays again. I'm not sure how the two could be related, but I'm guessing there could be some corruption with program permissions somewhere.
I'm new to Mac computing (well, 6 months, but still a lot to learn) and would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction to solve these bugs (although mainly the iPhoto one).

Thanks for the tip Terence...I'll give that a try and will report back.
I also have a wireless mouse, so I imagine I will need to try used a standard wired one for a while to test that out too. If neither of these solve my problem, I'll report back.
    Cheers,
    David

  • IPhoto 6 slideshows not full screen!!!

First of all, as this problem has not changed since iPhoto 5.02 on OS X 10.3.9, let me provide you with some background...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1425902&#1425902
Now, let me detail the problem again. I have a Mac Mini 1.25 Ghz with 512 MB RAM connected to a 20" Apple Cinema Display (aluminum) running at its native resolution of 1680 x 1050. Prior to iPhoto version 5.02, if I watched a slideshow, either by clicking the "Play" button on an album or creating a full fledged slideshow, the pictures in the slideshow would be fit to the width of my display and then cropped on the top and bottom so that the picture would fill all the real-estate on my display. I believe this may have only been the case when viewing with Ken Burns effect enabled... in any case it was exactly the way that I wanted it to work. After updating to iPhoto 5.02 and on every subsequent version of iPhoto all the way unitl iPhoto 6, this is not the behavior. Now, black bars are inserted on the left and right of my display and the photo is displayed in a box in the center that fills the height of the display and is approximately 4:3 in aspect ratio. No combination of settings for the automatic ken burns effect, scale pictures to fit screen, or slideshow format settings have yeided a result that fills the entire screen... most make it look worse. The only thing that seems to help is lowering the resolution of the display from the native of 1680 x 1050 to 1024 x 768 or something similar. Obviously this deteriorates the quality of the images.
Apparently, this was a design decision made by apple...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301667
First of all, it makes no sense to me that iPhoto should decide my computer isn't capable of displaying full screen slideshows when it was perfectly capable of doing so prior to iPhoto 5.02. Secondly, the proposed work around is ridiculous. The amount of time and effort needed to produce a QT movie for each slideshow you want to show full screen greatly reduces the functionality of the otherwise awesome slideshow features... not to mention it greatly reduces the quality of the slideshow.
I am posting to again make it known that this is still an issue for many users in the latest version of iPhoto. People still want it fixed. And many people with affected computers might not even know that iPhoto is supposed to display full screen slideshows if you want them.
Now, I apologize in advance for the bold I'm about to use, but this is the most important part of this post and I hope someone at Apple reads it...
Make an option in iPhoto to enable full screen slideshows even on computers that the program deems incapable!
That way users can accept your automatic determination of this capability, or they can judge for themselves whether or not full screen slideshows are worth a "potential" degradation in performance. You can even worn them once when they enable the option that it may cause decreased performance on their hardware. That way they'll know you tried.
Ok, there... now that that is out of my system, does anyone else have any ideas or would like to add something?
    Mac Mini 1.25 Ghz G4, 512 MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I take a lot of pictures with 2-3 digital cameras (as a hobby). I use my old 400MHz G4 TiBook as my picture bank when I travel. I got very frustrated when I realized that the screen resolution is set to 800*600 when you do a slideshow in iPhoto, and there is no way to change that.
This is especially bothering when the pictures are taken with my DSLR, but looking at pictures from a 5 MB camera on a 0,5 MB resolution screen is a drag in any case.
I think that I have found a solution to this, however. It would be nice if someone else could try to verify my results. Very simple:
    - Close iPhoto and get a plist editor (I used PlistEdit Pro which I found in Macupdate).
    - With the editor, open the iPhoto preferences file: /Users/Your_Userame/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    - There's a property called SlideshowFixedScreenRes close close to the end of the file. Change it's value from NO to YES and save the plist file. Relaunch iPhoto.
This worked very well with the TiBook. Your mileage may vary, though. If you find that it works for you, please let the others know.
If this preference property really is the legitimate place for setting this, it makes me wonder why Apple is so arrogant that they don't give us a switch somewhere for this.
NOTE: If you try this the risk is yours. I don't think that the risk in this case is very severe however - if you throw the iPhoto plist file in the Trash it will be rebuilt when you relaunch iPhoto.
    Best regards, Jukka

  • IPhoto - Exporting Slideshows - not happening

Im have a difficult time exporting slideshows to anywhere, no matter how many times I try, they don't end up in either my iTunes slideshow folder or my desktop, the 2 destinations I sent them to. Regardless of the resolution, 480p 720p or 1080p, it just won't work. I am running the latest Yosemite and iTunes programs. I had similar difficulties last time i tried just over a year ago. When exporting, there is an already ticked box saying 'send a copy to iTunes' however its not there...
2010 imac - yosemite - iphoto (latest version)

    Try reinstall iPhoto.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • IPhone video H.264 will not play in iPhoto '11 Slideshow

    Hello,
I use iPhoto to organize videos and .jpgs; I take videos both with a Sony camera and my iPhone. I often trim videos in iPhoto and then play them as part of a Event or Album, along with .jpgs, using the SlideShow feature before moving on to iMovie or Keynote. Recently I have encountered difficulties with iPhone H.264 videos, particularly in vertical format -- they simply won't play in the iPhoto simple SlideShow and lock it up (a simple X then ends the SlideShow and iPhoto is no longer locked). The vertical iPhone videos work in iMovie if I simply move them there. I have not detected any problems with the Sony videos, which are invariably horizontal. I am not experiencing any other iPhoto issues although my library is >125GB.
         Any Suggestions?
        Thanks for your thoughts.

    léonie,
         @#$^$%^ Computers!
After I realized I could not determine the frame rate (to respond to your post), out of frustration I went back, restored the most troublesome video to original, closed iPhoto, re-opened iPhoto, re-trimed the troublesome video, and .... yep, you guessed it .... it worked fine. It had to be something in the trim process.
I haven't taken time to check the others that were problematic, but I'm confident that was the problem.
@#% how much of my time; how much of your time.....but, still far better than the years I spent watching a rotating hourglass.
Thanks for your interest, your offer to help, and my best to you. (And, my apologies for failing to include the accent grave in your name previously.

  • Iphoto 08 slideshow music not playing

After making a slideshow with iphoto I mixed some songs together using garageband, then exported the mixed songs to iTunes.
But when I choose that track in iTunes for my slideshow it doesn't play. I've tried a bunch of other songs they won't play either. I have done this before using iphoto 06 and didn't have any problems. But now with 08 I can't seem to get any music to play with my slideshow.
Which means no exporting to iDVD, no burning to a disk, no showing off to my friends.
Can anybody tell me what my problem is??

    soulmanbdr529:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you able to get non-Garageband mixed playlists to work in iPhoto's slideshows? If so then there's something GB is doing to the joined tracks that iPhoto doesn't like. For that you'd probably get more informed responses in the Garageband forums.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto: "found trace not valid" during export slideshow process

    Hello everybody,
I've a problem with IPhoto on my iMac (SW OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.4 (12E55)).
When I try to make a movie (i.e. for my Ipad) starting from a slideshow, after some time the process fails and IPhoto give me back this message: "In the movie I've found a not valid trace".
I've just made all of the following actions:
    - repair permissions
    - rebuild thumbnail
    - repair database
    - rebuild database
but unfortunately I haven't solved my problem.
Thanks in advance for your kind help.
    Best regards
    Alberto from Turin (Italy)

There appears to be a bug in QuickTime that prevents exporting a large Slideshow. I would try solitting the slideshow in two and exporting then join it up with iMovie. Or use another app:
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie, on every Mac sold, as is iDVD.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter $29
    PhotoToMovie $49.95
    PulpMotion $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Express $199
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.
However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.
    Regards
    TD

  • Shuffling is NOT "True Random." How can I change my set up?

I have over 3000 songs and want to shuffle with "true random."  However, when I listen, sometimes I skip (FF) over songs and sometimes I listen to songs.  Because of this, when I listen...the IPOD favors/plays mostly the songs that I have listened to before and does not play those I have skipped in the past.  But when I shuffle, I want to shuffle through ALL my songs without favoring those I've played.  How can I delete this "memory" and stop from happening in the future...I hate it?

You can reset the number of Plays (with ctrl+A, right mouse button "Reset Plays"), Maybe it works...

  • Shuffle Song is not random enough

There are 2800 songs in my ipod, I found that the Shuffle Songs function is not random enough, it always picks up the songs which I had played in last one or two days.

...Hmmm? Does iTunes take in to account what songs
the iPod has played? Therefore, will an iTines
Smartlist work for ipod shuffle playback?
If you're talking about a normal iPod, then yes. Part of the Autosync operation is to copy the last played times from the iPod into iTunes.
If you're talking about an iPod Shuffle, then no. The iPod Shuffle doesn't have a clock or a date/time, so it won't know what songs the iPod Shuffle has played recently.

  • Lightroom 3 pdf slideshow not in random order

I have attempted several times to setup a slideshow in random order that repeats. The preview works fine but on other machines (Windows mainly) the adobe reader does not display the pdf slideshow in random order nor will it repeat when these preferences are selected in Lightroom 3.
You can work around the repeat issue but I can not find a solution for the random order. Any suggestions.
