IPlanet Mesaging Server 5.1 SP1 (startup hangs on STORED)

I've got a case open with support, but I'm reaching a desperate point here as we've been without mail for over 24 hours now. I restored our entire Messaging Server file system from backup yesterday after a failed disk took out the system. (Sidenote: the restore from tape worked up to a point but it didn't seem to set owner:group on some of the restored files. Is there any resource that explains which dirs should be owned by which users for Messaging Server to work correctly?) After restore, I tried to start up the Store Daemon portion of Messaging Server with the following command:
/iplanet/server5/msg-servername/start-msg store
After a long period of waiting, I got the following error:
bash-2.03# ./start-msg store
/iplanet/server5: Starting STORE daemon .................failed.
ERROR: Failed to find process file after 90 seconds:
/iplanet/server5/msg-servername/config/pidfile.store
Unable to verify if the STORE daemon started.
Check the log file(s) under: /iplanet/server5/msg-servername/log/default
ERROR: The following services failed to start, or were already:
STORE daemon
After that I went to the log location and found a 'default' log file that was two days old:
bash-2.03# ls -lsa
total 4884
2 drwxr-xr-x 2 root other 512 Mar 24 18:42 .
2 drwxr-xr-x 9 root other 512 Mar 24 09:24 ..
576 -rw------- 1 mailsrv nsgroup 286187 Mar 22 20:50 default
I assumed that something must be wrong with the store directory, so I looked around a bit. I found that permissions on that dir were set for everything to be owned by root:sys. I assume this is wrong since most of the utils that operate on the directory have to be run by the mailsrv:nsgroup user/group combo, so I ran a chown -R mailsrv:nsgroup on the store directory (about 12-13 gigs of mail in it). I tried to start the store daemon again and got the same error. So I went a little farther and started a reconstruct -r. That process started at about 11:30PM EST last night and it's still running. Using sar -u and sar -d to monitor CPU and disk use, I'm seeing very negligible use. Is reconstruct -r still actually doing anything? Is there any other way to tell? I saw in the docs that a reconstruct can take a long time, but they had an 18 hour period for an 85 gig mail store. Just for basis of comparison, this is running on an Enterprise 220R at Solaris 8 02/02REV. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

It turned out to be owner:group problems. There was only one log.* file in the SERVEROOT/store/mboxlist directory. The problem was resolved by using 'truss' with the appropriate options when starting the store daemon with './msg-start store':
truss -fear all -w all -o stored_truss.txt ./start-msg store
Then I used grep to scan the file for the EACC string. This helped me figure out which dirs needed to be owned by the user and group that the mail server processes run under. (Thanks to [email protected] for the suggestion of 'truss')
At the moment I am running a 'reconstruct -r' and it seems to be doing what it's supposed to. When I ran it last night, I couldn't remember if the store daemon needed to be running or not, but apparently it does.

  • IPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1 bug new details

I have found more details regarding the iPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1 web.xml
    parsing errors:
It appears that in web.xml now the sequence of declaration of the elements
    plays role!!!!
If I put <servlet-mapping> tag in the beginning, after that I cannot declare
    any other <servlet> tag in
web.xml, but if I change the sequence, that is put the <servlet> tags and
    than only one <servlet-mapping> tag
at the end than the parser works fine and the server runs.
This is more than strange behavior, because the declaration of the elements
should not be dependent on their sequence of declaration!!!.
    Sincerely,

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Dear All,
I want to finalize this problem.
This behavior is actually quite normal and follows from DTD declared at
    http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd
That is the element <servlet> is listed prior to the element
    <servlet-mapping>, so as we
know from DTD syntax, when elements are separated by commas in declaration,
    their order is
    essential.
So basically what happened, in iPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1 the DTD
(http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd) has changed, so that is why
the old web.xml files, where the order of elements was different, became
invalid according to the new DTD, this is all the problem.
    Thank you.

I could find out that web.xml parsing (SAX) error occurs only if
    <servlet-mapping> tag precedes any <servlet>
tag in Web deployment descriptor of iPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1.
That is if I group all <servlet> tags in the beginning and then at the
bottom I group all the <servlet-mapping> tags,
the SAX parser works fine and the server starts.
In my previous messages I stated that we can have only one<servlet-mapping>
tag, this is not true, the problem was in a position of the tag's
    declaration.

    Hi Clarence,
Today we experienced the problem again,
    Users can’t login to RDS, but now they got stucked at “"Please wait for the Group Policy client”;
System log events recorded the following errors again:
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Schedule service.

  • Installation Error with iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 SP1 and Windows 2000

    Hello,
I'm having real trouble getting iPlanet Directory Server installed on a Windows 200 Server machine. Every time I install it, no matter what options I choose, I get this series of popup boxes at the end:
    - Setup is unable to store configuration data in the LDAP directory
    - Unable to create Administration Server configuration
    - Could not authenticate ldap connection, "Unknown error"
    - Unable to set ACI in Configuration Directory Server
But searching on this forum, I have found a lot of post. I have tested the different solution proposed :
    * Add on the host file the short name and the long name of my machine with it's IP adress
    * When the installation process crash, uninstall the software, reboot the machine and then restart the installation
With all this solution, the problem is always here.
    Could you help me ?
    Boris MANCHETTE

Are you using Terminal Services. iPlanet DS will not install properly over Terminal Services. You have to install from the direct attached console.

  • Power mac G4 - Startup hangs at gray screen

    Hello all,
I have a Power mac G4 - mirrored drive door model.  512mb of RAM; 833mghz - about 50+ gigabytes of storage remaining.
I recently starting using this mac again, here is what happened:
Power mac G4 was running 10.2.1 - had never been updated; it also was capable of running classic os9 (even though I never used it)
Started using machine again a few weeks ago; let "software update" install 10.2.8 update - everything worked fine
Put computer into target disk mode to transfer files to my new macbook pro (13") - using firewire connection
While trying to connect (migration assistant) - window froze will calculating the amount of space that the "user" on the power mac totalled - power mac appeared to be frozen
Did a hard reset / power down of the power mac G4
Upon restart, power mac G4 goes through all start up functions up to gray screen with apple logo (with spinning wheel) and then goes to a darker gray screen (without the logo) and spinning wheel
Dark gray screen with spinning wheel hangs indefinitely - I've let it stay there for hours on end hoping it will resolve but it doesn't
Here's what I have done so far:
Placed power mac G4 into target disk mode again in conjunction with macbook proI can see all the files on the power mac G4 (and have already copied them to the macbook pro) - so I don't think the hard drive is damaged
Disconnected all non-apple peripheral devices - only had a card installed in the back - but took that out - issue persisted (did not replace card in back)
Removed one non-apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Replaced non-apple RAM stick and removed apple RAM stick - issue persisted
    Reset PRAM
Started computer in single-user modeused fsck and tried to have system check/fix issue; no matter how many times I re-run the command to repair it never comes back with a message saying no issues found - instead it keeps returning with a message saying that the issue was repaired "system modified"
Started computer in verbose modestartup seems to hang when this appears:
"/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: (ipc/send) invalid destination""LayState: cannot map display interlocks."
"/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection""Cannot connect to server"
"/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorInvalidConnection""Connection called with invalid connection"
Tried re-installing with system discsThe only discs I received with the power mac G4 when I purchased are orange and say "SSW version 8.6" on it" ("iMac Software Restore" and "iMac Software Install")
Computer does not respond when holding down "C" key at startup with either disc in the drive
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as ONLY the internal HD - not either of the CDs I mentioned above; I wonder if it no longer recognizes the original CDs because I updated to 10.2.8 from 10.2.1 before the issue?I also have an install disc for OS X 10.4.7 - for a friend's iMac (G5)
When holding down "C" key at startup with the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive AND the internal HD
When I choose the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When I choose the internal HD the startup hangs at the gray screen I mentioned above
At this point, I don't know what else to do.  I believe the computer is still good because I can see everything on it when I put it into target disk mode; it just refuses to make it through the startup/login process.  I have read discussion threads that suggest re-installing the OS using another computer - but I don't know how to do that.  I also wondered if there was a way to tell the computer to re-install the software using the original CDs - but from the command line (in single-user mode)?
    Someone - PLEASE HELP!

Sorry, SU Single User Mode, OF Open Firmware as these 2 where mentioned before.
As a test, let's try disconnecting the HD & see if it booys to any mode without it attached.
It could be the User's files or login messed up, if you want to try something a little more desperate...
Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...
    http://theappleblog.com/2008/06/22/reset-os-x-password-without-an-os-x-cd/
It'll boot like a newly setup Mac, but all your stuff should still be there once filling out the stuff.
Except you could just use Target mode and move or rename that file.

  • SQL Server Express 2012 SP2 installation hangs during extract phase

    Greetings!
I am having an issue with trying to silent install SQL Server Express 2012 SP2 (x86).
I have a proprietary installation framework, which is calling the SQL Server Express installer.
The SQL Server Express installer starts extracting files to c:\{some guid}. The folder reaches about 11 mb in size, and then nothing further happens. No activity on the machine, CPU or disk - I have waited up to 15 minutes to verify this. On the normal installation,
the size of this folder is ~650 mb.
Here are the things I've also tested:
    - I'm experiencing these symptoms on both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2012 R2 (haven't tested other platforms)
    - If I launch exactly the same command from the command prompt, the installation goes through as normal
    - If I replace the SQL Server Express 2012 SP2 with SQL Server Express 2012 SP1, and install via our installation framework, the installation goes through as normal
    - I have checked and double-checked that our installation framework is started with administrative privileges.
    - From my previous search attempts, I have seen issues where the installer would hang or fail when launched from inside an msi, which would result in a log in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\<something something>. These are not the symptoms
I am experiencing. The C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\ folder is not even created!
Any suggestions, or places I can look to figure out why it's not proceeding? For now, I have worked around the issue by including SP1 instead of SP2, but ideally I'd like to base my solution on the most recent service pack.

    Hello Alberto!
The installation framework does check for this. I'm also certain that these prerequisites are fulfilled.
When the SQL Server process hangs, I can kill the process, copy/paste the exact command that was executed from the installation framework's log files, and execute that command in a command prompt - and then the installation runs as expected.
The installation framework installs SQL Server Express correctly if I use the 2008 R2 SP1 express or the 2012 SP1 Express installer. It's just the SP2 installer that is giving me problems.
The only difference I can think of is that the installation framework is a 32-bit process, which calls the SQL Server installer, while the command prompt is a 64-bit application. I am installing the SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe
from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43351, so it should be compatible with my 32 bit environment -
"SQLEXPR_x86 is the same product but supports installation onto both 32-bit and 64-bit (WoW) operating systems"
    Tomorrow, I will try:
    - Installing on Windows 7 32-bit
    - Trying to launch the SQL Server installer from a powershell (x86) prompt, to emulate a 32-bit environment on a 64-bit machine

  • Can't start UCM server after new installation of 11.1.1.8 on Microsoft server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit EE

    Hi All
After new installation of WCC 11.1.1.8 on Microsoft server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit EE UCM_server1 can’t start. (Please see trace below). WCC 11.1.1.7 run without issues on this environment.
    Steps:
    1. Installation of jrockit-jdk1.6.0_45-R28.2.7-4.1.0
    2. Installation of WLS 10.3.6
    3. Installation of WCC 11.1.1.8
    4. Schema creation by RCU 11.1.1.8
    5. Domain creation by config.cmd with AdminServer, UCM_server1, IBR_server1
    6. Run Admin - (success)
    7. Run NodeManager (optional) - (success)
    8. Run UCM_server1 – failed
Still not works after patching MLR 1 for WCC 11.1.1.8 or upgrade from 11.1.1.7 .
From log files we can saw that problem caused by JniNativeOsUtils.dll file in “<Middleware Home>\Oracle_ECM1\ucm\idc\components\NativeOsUtils\lib\windows-amd64\7.2.1.1”
I replaced JniNativeOsUtils.dll with same file from 11.1.1.7 version and UCM_server1 starts work
I got errors during startup (syNativeOsUtilsNotLoaded and UnsatisfiedLinkError - you can foun them in trace below), but WCC up and works.
I also get error when trying to start SystemProperties or ComponentWithard utility:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Oracle\MIDDLE~1\USER_P~1\domains\WCC_DO~1\ucm\cs\bin\SystemProperties.exe". Dependent Assembly      Microsoft.VC80.MFC,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.762" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Leon

  • Can't browse anything in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

    Hi,
Need your help and expertise. Suddenly, i can't browse anything in my Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with IIS7. I tried already three(3) different browsers (IE8, Firefox & Chrome). Before, i can browse (using IE8 & Firefox) both private (LAN) and public
(Internet) websites be it via ip address or domain name without any issues whatsoever. In fact, i can't even access the local http website (status in IIS7 is Started) my server is hosting.
The only problem occured just yesterday in my server was drive C: got disk full but i was still able to access via RDP the server and free up disk space of 80GB. I tried already to clear the browsser history,
disable the add-ons of IE8 and turn-off the firewall. I have NOT tried to reset  IE8 settings, disable  third-party
program or service and startup in msconfig as it require reboot of the server. I'm apprehensive
to do things i mentioned i have not tried since the server is up and running for 919 days and 17hours. It is why i tried other browsers that i even installed Chrome just to test and troubleshoot the browsing problem.
    Thanks

  • PS2013 - Creating a new instance of Project Server does not run and hangs in "Waiting for Resource"

    Hi,
In my Project Server 2013 environment I created an instance of Project Server which is running in a notebook Hyper-V Windows 2012 Server with 11 GB, 4 threds, 3 GHz, one box configuration with complete version of SQL Server 2012 with SP1, nothing trial.
PS and SPS 2013 updated with Cumulative Update of Dec 2013.
I want to create a new empty instance in the same port 80 with a different URL or in the port 90 creating a new web application.
Whatever option I choose, when I try to create the instance of the Project Server it hangs in "Waiting for Resource" status. No Event Viewer, no hanged timer Jobs, all services running, all pools and sites started and I found out nothing in the
SharePoint Logs. After every attempt I return the server snapshot to the former state.
The Project Server and SharePoint continue to work normally.
Any hints where should I look to solve this issue?
    Thank you.
Best regards, Ricardo Segawa - Segawas Projetos / Microsoft Partner

    Ricardo,
so, the only clue I can find in your posting is around the web application.
if you want a 2nd PWA instance on the same web application (this presums you have one already, working, right?).
all you really have to do is give it a different "pwa" name - like "Test" or some such and use a unique project database name : Test_ProjectServerData
there is much more you could do, for isolation into a private content database for example.
to use a different port, then you need to setup a web application on a different port and proceed as above, selecting that web app to start from.
if the basic action of new pwa site provision is not working, then it may suggest there is something systemmically wrong with the setup.
    let us know,
    Thanks, Eric S. Pcubed

  • Question re how iPlanet Directory Server applies the Look Through Limit.

I have a question on how iPlanet Directory Server applies the lookthrough limit...
I am running an LDAP search on a 4.13 directory. The search filter is:
         "(&(rtrdaMaturityDate>=20020128)(rtrdaMaturityDate<=20020130))"
rtrdaMaturityDate is an int, and indexed with pres,eq,sub
There are 244680 entries where rtrdamaturityDate>=20020128
    383005 entries where rtrdaMaturityDate<=20020130
484 entries which satisfy both conditions
When the query is run as Directory Manager it just hangs (presumably it would complete eventually).
When run as another user it gives a size limit error. The size limit and lookthrough limit on the directory are both 5000 . As the matching number of entries doesn't exceed the size limit, I think perhaps it is the lookthrough limit causing the problem...
It looks as if it treats each part of the filter separately, building an candidate list for each, giving an error if both reach the look through limit. i.e. it does not realise that both parts of the filter could be treated together.
    Is this correct ?
This theory is born out by the fact that if I change the value so the filter would logically return only the highest few values, the search works (i.e. as if the <= filter condition hit LTL, but the >= did not).
Also, if I add another condition to give "(&(rtrdaIssuerBgNid=4403)(rtrdamaturityDate>=20020128)(rtrdaMaturityDate<=20020130))" then the search eventually correctly returns a single entry. (IssuerBgNid=4403 on its own gives 1004 entries).
Can I therefore assume that a seach will only work if at least one condition in the filter gives a candidate list with less entries than the look through limit?
Any advice on how to implement a range search like this would also be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

The lookthrough limit is reached when the resulting candidate list contains more entries than the limit...
Lookthrough limit has been implemented specifically to for Range filters (and OR filters) to avoid consuming too many resources.
For your particular problem, you can increase the lookthrough limit... but it will affect all users and searches.
Note that iPlanet Directory Server 5.x does provide a per User LookThrough Limit (and other limits as well), therefore you could just increase the lookthrough limit for the specific users performing these searches.
    Regards,
    Ludovic.

  • Weblogic server 5.1 goes to hang within an hour

I have the problem with weblogic server 5.1 that it goes to hang within around
an hour. There is no obvious error or exceptions shown in the weblogic log.
But at the time the weblogic server is hanging, I just observed from the weblogic
console GUI that once a user logon to the web application (the web server is iPlanet
6.0), the number of bean in cache of the corresponding stateful session bean increases
one but does not drop. Every single logon makes an increment 1 to the # of the
bean in cache of the corresponding session bean but no dropping.
What the session bean does is actually obtain a connection from the weblogic server
and get data from database. I went down to the database (Sybase ASE 11.9) at
the hanging time but did not see any long-running process nor table blocking that
may hinder the database response time. I do not understand what the session bean
    was waiting for.
The only hints that I have is the below error message which was found in the iPlanet
web server log. Anyone please help to tell me what the problem can be?
Error found in iPlanet web server

    Thanks for the thread dump.
Yes, DriverManager is the problem. Unfortunately this class is
    well-known for causing deadlocks.
You really do not ever want to use DriverManager.getConnection from
code that runs in the server. Instead, you should define a TxDataSource
for your connection pool and use DataSource.getConnection.
I would recommend you lookup the DataSource in your stateless session
bean's ejbCreate method and store the DataSource in a member variable.
Your methods can call DataSource.getConnection when they need a JDBC
    connection.

    Rob,
I got the same symptom with weblogic server 6.1 today and I got thethread dump
for it this time. I read through the log and I wonder if the methodcall from
"java.sql.DriverManager.println" led to the hanging problem.
I attach the thread dump for your reference.
Do you have any advice? Thanks in advance.

    Rob,
    Thanks for your advice firstly.
I am not able to reproduce the problem at this moment so I do not have
    the thread
dump for review. But I did take a look at the Queue Length in the
    WL
    console
GUI at the time hanging and I found it kept to be 0 or 1. Also, the
    heap size
    was just about 60%.
But I have missed out one thing in my previous post. Besides the stateful
    session
bean, another stateless session bean was used at the time user logon.
    And the
stateless session bean just behaved the same as what the stateful one
    did at the
time the WL was hanging, i.e. its "bean in cache" increased one when
    a user tried
    to logon.
What else shall I look into in order to find out the root cause?

Take a thread dump (or several) when the server is hung. If you can't

    Hi,
I haven't come across such an issue before but I would like to help. This could be probably because, the downloaded file may be corrupted due to come reasons. I would recomend you to give a try after downloading it once again. Please let me know your thoughts on the same.

  • Iplanet application server 6.5 on windows xp

I'm trying to install iplanet application server 6.5 on windows xp. but for some reason it just hangs at the end of the install. Leaving my no choice but to quit the instalation. Has anyone sucessfully install 6.5 on xp? and could anyone help? would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance...

I've just spent a day or two mucking around with getting the iPlanet 6.5 Application Server install running with IIS on XP, and have got as far as having the "fortune" application running. I also encountered the "hanging installation" problem on my 5th or 6th reinstallation. Here is my checklist of things to do:
    1. As has been pointed out earlier, you must have a static IP address assigned to the machine you are installing on.
    2. You should set up IIS before installing iPlanet - during the install you'll be prompted to set up the Web Connector for IIS.
    3. If you find that the install hangs at the end (seems to be in the middle of building the Start Menu shortcuts), then deinstall from the Control Panel | Add Remove Software and run the install in Windows 2000 compatibility mode - this article lays out how to start applications in compatibility mode:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/expert/durham_og.mspx
    4. You need to switch IIS to run in-process as per these instructions:
    http://docs.sun.com/source/816-5788-11/app1.html#14411
see the section "Registering the Plug-in on IIS 5.0 running on Windows 2000".
Note that in XP the tab is called "Directory" rather than "Virtual Directory" and ensure that you grant Execute Permission to both Scripts and Executables (default is just Scripts I think)
    5. You need to grant security permissions to the registry key
    \\local machine\\software\\iplanet\\Appserver\\6.0\\CCS0\\HTTPAPI
