Is it possible to write a script for Excel Chart Conversion to an ai file?

I tried to record a script and it didn’t work. I will attempt to explain what I am doing (and why) and maybe you guys can tell me if it can be done or not. We are working with Excel charts and we eventually put them into InDesign for a print magazine. Here are the steps as best as I can translate. We are using Illustrator CS6 Version 16.2.0.
1. Copy Chart from Excel
2. Paste into Illustrator
3. Fit Art Board to Graphic
4. Select All
5. Change Kerning to 0
6. Select the Background
7. Select Same Fill Color
8. Change Color to 5% Black
9. Select the grid lines on the Chart
10. Change the Stroke to 50% Black
11. Save as an AI file
There is also a scenario where there are multiple charts and we would like to make multiple art boards in the same file.
I do this for a few reasons: Remove Rich Black, Adjust Kerning, Eliminate any Font Issues, Easier to Scale, and it chokes our rip because there is no link when they are copied and pasted directly from Excel to InDesign.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

no can do, there's no access to mesh point with scripting, sorry about that.

  • Can you point me to FrameScript samples that do some or all of the following?  Or maybe even write the script for me for $$$? :-)

    Hi,
I'm brand new to writing FrameScript.  I'm looking for example scripts that I can piece together or perhaps you can give me a quote for your cost to write the script for me.  Here is a description of basically what needs doing.  We have .book files than contain say a cover.fm, multiple  chapter.fms, and possibly multiple appendix.fms.  (They actually contain more  types, but I can expand the script for that.)  I don't think here is a  consistent way to automatically determine which .fms are of which type, so I was  thinking of popping up a dialog box that showed the files in the book and asked  the user to identify which files were of which type.  This asking could be done  all at once, or it could iteratively ask for the first type then run all the  processing then ask for the second type, etc, etc.
The processing of each file goes like  this:
    1) Delete the paragraph and character catalog  contents
    2) Import all formats, including the new paragraph and  character catalogs from correct template file (chapter.fm, appendix.fm,  etc)
    3) Remap the old paragraph and character tags to the  new ones, preferably based on an internal predefined, hard-coded table, but  possibly using the "use a remapping table that is in another .fm file" method.   It's just that the latter method requires the user to open two more .fms in  addition to the several other template files they'll already (correct?) have to  have open.
    4) Report to the user all tags that are in their file  that are not in the new catalogs
Can you point me to pieces?  Write the whole thing?  Recommend someone who can?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave, if you haven't yet check it out, do visit the Framescript users group, here:
        http://groups.yahoo.com/group/framescript-users/
There are several folks who do contract FS work who post their contact info as part of that group (I believe there's a webring also). Also,  Rick Quatro has a good e-book "Crash Course" about learning FrameScript (although the book refers to an earlier version, almost all of the concepts are still applicable to the current versions of FS and FM) , check it out at

  • Is it possible to write a script that changes swf export settings?

I want to be able to export a swf file that uses a different text anti-alias setting. Is it possible to create a script that can set and export a swf file to my specifications?

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Is it possible to create a script that can set and export a swf file to my specifications?
It seems there isn't. A script cannot add basic functionality, only access it. In this case, you can't change the setting because there is no 'antialias text' setting in the SWF export settings.
However, all is not lost. Google turned up this helpful page; it might be possible to edit your SWF after exporting and then re-save it.

  • Possible to make a script for duplicating index entries?

I would like to make things easier than they seem to be.
I have several references (1:st level topics) already that are correct with page numbers and all that.
Now, I would like to create a 1:st level topic, under which I put "duplicates" of these already indexed references and put them as 2:nd level topics, under the main, 1:st level, topic.
    Example.
Let's say I have these references (1:st level topics) already, with correct page numbers and everything:
    Audi 4-6, 8
    BMW 7, 21-24
    Citroen 11, 12
    Mercedes 80
    Volkswagen 31-36
Okay, these are perfectly indexed and all the pages are correct.
Now, I would like to have these references as both 1:st level topics, and also as second level topic references under the main topic "Cars", like this:
    Cars 4-80
    Audi 4-6, 8
    BMW 7, 21-24
    Citroen 11, 12
    Mercedes 80
    Volkswagen 31-36
My question is. Is it possible to achieve this by a script, so I can copy (duplicate) all these references and put them under the topic "Cars" too (preserving the 1:st level topics too of course), without having to go to each of the pages and create new topics all over again for every single finished topic, that I intend to put under the main topic "Cars"?
Just to inform you, the above named 5 topics, are NOT only the topics I want to put under "Cars"... there are like a hundred :).
Is it possible to make a script like this? Or do I have to do all the work ALL OVER again?
    Martin

Hmmm… This one copies all files which have 'flash' (could by x-shockwave-flash) string in mime type to /tmp/flash. Hope it will be helpful.
    for i in ~/.opera/cache4/* ; do file -i -F '' $i | grep flash | cut -d ' ' -f 1 | xargs cp -t /tmp/flash 2>/dev/null ; done
    UPDATE:
Sorry, there was a little bug, I've just changed 'video' to 'flash' ('video' coundn't match 'x-shockwave-flash').

  • Can someone help me write a script for Soundbooth

If I have 50 files in C:\MyMusic and want to
Match Volume in Soundbooth CS5 how can I write a script to do that?

The only other way I've seen to do this with a library of that size is SoundConverter by Steve DeKorte. It would be time consuming to do, but there is a feature to "normalize volume" on all files being converted. Th other drawback is that as long as you are " converting" from mp3 to mp3, you have to save the "converted" files to a different directory. It won't overwrite during the normalization process.
I had a library of more than 92,000 songs in 14,000 folders and 46,000 subfolders  up till last October. I had gone through it twice to "clean up and mormalize" it over six years' time. The transport seized on the drive as I was preparing to back everything up on DVD, and I was unable to recover the data on the discs when it happened. I was duly distraught when I lost all that music, but as I look back onthe last eight months, I've had a lot less hassles from "tinkering" with all those files all the time.

  • Script for finding characters in a folder or file name

I need some help on writing a script that will search thru users folders and files and replace characters in the names with a different character. Our users folders go back to when the users used OS 9 and they used / \ * ? in the file and folder names, I want to write a script that will replace these characters with an _ . Obviously I will need to be logged in as the root user.
    The server is OS 10.3.9
    Thanks,
    Jeff
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Roger,
There's a flaw in your regular expression and that is the absence of alternation. You want to replace any one of these characters with an underscore. That can be accomplished by putting the characters in a character class. Since the class matches a single character, you'll get an underscore for each.
Your regular expression only matches a group of all of the characters, side-by-side, in the order you typed them and then it replaces the entire group with a single underscore.
Oh, there's one other possible flaw. I think that the find utility creates lists of files in relatively large groups and then acts on them. If you change a directory that contains a file you want to change, it's possible that the change to the directory will not be reflected in the path to the file, causing a "file not found" error. A depth first search and acting only on the basename would eliminate that possibility.
    Hi Jeff,
I recommend a command like the following:
    find -d /Users -regex ".[\:*?]." -exec echo 'mv "{}" "$(dirname "{}")"/"$(basename "{}" | sed '\''s/[\\:*?]/_/g'\'' )"' \; | sh
That uses the same character class in the -regex option of the find command. That way, nothing will be invoked unless necessary. The method of creating the text of a complex command and using the -exec switch to echo that into a shell is an old trick from O'Reilly's UNIX Power Tools.
I substituted a colon for a forward slash. As the path separator, the forward slash isn't a valid filename character on a UNIX system. However, old Apple tools, including the Finder, still use a colon as the path separator. Therefore the system presents the allowable character as a forward slash to Apple tools and a colon to UNIX tools. Thus using the colon in the command above will have the effect you want on files that the Finder says has a forward slash in the name.

  • Is it possible to write a script that would change triangles to circles?

I have an Excel file that plots a scatter-plot graph using a logarithmic scale. Since it is not possible to create a logarithmic graph in Illustrator, I imported the graph into Excel as a PDF. However, each data point is a triangle, and I would like to use circles that I created using OBJECT>GRAPH>DESIGN. Is there an easy way to replace the triangles with these circles?
If you need to see the current AI file, just let me know how to attach it.
    Thanks.

To elaborate on what Monika wrote select all the triangles with the direct select tool and the shift key and do not group them then go to effect>Convert Shape Ellipse choose Absolute and enter your dimensions you can then give it a transform effect to give it a visual centering as in the screenshot and turn that into a graphic style which can be saved for future use.
However remember if you wish to change the size or offset the graphic style will record the convert shape and transform in the appearance panel and it can be changed you can do it to one or all of the converted triangles.

  • Somebody could write a script for me ?

Of course I am ready to pay.
    - Assume that we are in LT. The script asks : "Where is the folder containing all LT files ?" The User points to the folder.
    - The script opens the first LT file it finds.
(In fact the script has nothing to do in LT itself, no editing, nothing)
    - The script invokes the "File > Render Movie" feature

    - File's name does not change.

    - Both additional options are enabled by default in the Project's settings
    - The script just "clicks" Save. Then LT renders the movie.
When it is finished (the rendering may take 2 minutes or 10 depending of the size of the file), LT opens the rendered movie in a new window.

    - The script invokes the "File > Close project" feature.
    - Then LOOP (opens the second file in the folder and executes tasks again).
