Is iTunes 7 corrupting my iPod?

Ever since I installed iTunes 7, I've had to restore my iPod twice because it's corrupted!
Has any one else had this problem? I had no problems with the previous versions of iTunes and my iPod worked without a single problem.
So I'm putting it out there to see if anyone has had this problem.
If not, I'm going back to iTunes 6!

Since upgrading to iTunes 7, if I leave my iPod off long enough to go through a reset, I lose all of my songs (all folders are empty, all playlists are removed, etc.). Is anyone else having the same problem? Better yet, does anyone have a solution (other than downgrading to iTunes 6)? Or is this just a fun new feature that I get to deal with?
The problem is that my wife, who hasn't updated her iPod since iTunes 7 hit our iBook, doesn't want to "upgrade" and run into the same problems. Help, if possible. Thanks.

    I recently upgraded to a new computer, now running Windows 7 from XP and also with that installed the latest version of iTunes. I had never had too much trouble prior syncing and managing my music until recently when all of a sudden syncing even small amounts of data my iTunes and then essentially my whole computer would freeze(and/or encounter an error message where it would claim an issue with the last file it was trying to sync and i think it was an error 56 or something?) or become unresponsive. I even had it where I could still open and use other programs but I could no longer use Ctrl+Alt+Del even to access the task manager to force iTunes to close. Also anything that had made it through the first part of the sync was gone.
    It seemed like I would no longer be able to sync my iPod when it suddenly started working again and for the last week it has been fine until today where my main issue comes in...
    Today when trying to add a few CDs to my iPod it didn't freeze but ran into the same 56? error after freezing partway through syncing. However it didn't freeze so I restarted the program, plugged my ipod back in(this time the first few songs had stayed) and tried again...
    Except this time it froze, had to be shut down. I shut down and restarted my whole computer and then when I plugged my iPod and it tried verifying in I was told that (not only had I lost 2 GB of data) all of my music (about 130-140 GB) was listed under "Other" data in yellow instead of blue, and no longer appeared in the Music tab. I ejected and plugged it back in through iTunes, and still it was under other with another 24 GB missing in general this time.
    I have no idea what happened here and I have never had issues like this before. If this means I have to restore I will not only be losing certain things that were on my iPod from an old old computer that isn't around anymore but also due to other issues when transfering my iTunes library to my external hard drive I lost quite a few cds I'd have to rip again because that also is a mess.
    That and I am not sure if restoring will fix where it is freexing during sync to begin with.
    So I am sure there is no way to magically fix this... Especially because it seems there are a lot of similar issues though not the same with the newest iTunes(or historically many iTunes updates it seems) and iDevices, especially due to I suppose what are compatibility issues between iTunes and apparently life form what eve some Macs are saying... but I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on and if there was anything I could do short of "delete everything because our software ate your (some of it irreplacable) data, sorry" ?

    Are you using the Part of Gapless Album or crossfading, I came across an earlier iTunes post, that suggest this option was causing the iTunes to freeze, especially with huge library.

    Everything used to work just fine until recently. On my Windows XP Home SP3 laptop, with iTunes (version 9.0.2.25) already open, I connect my 5th Generation iPod Nano and get the following message in iTunes:
    "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
    If I plug the iPod into the computer without first starting iTunes, the Windows ‘Auto Play’ message comes up immediately then disappears and then the following message appears:
    "Your iPod needs to be formatted for use with Windows. Would you like to run iTunes to restore your iPod Now?"
    Otherwise, the iPod functions normally when not connected in iTunes. I can play the music, videos, and record videos with no problems.
    The troubleshooting steps I took were:
    I performed a reset of the Nano by first sliding the hold switch on/off a few cycles, leaving switch off (no orange showing), then pressed and held the Menu + Select button until the Apple logo appeared. Then I tried it in iTunes again; no such luck, same error. I then did a reset again, this time with the iPod connected to an AC power source; still no luck. I tried the reset numerous times and it didn’t help.
    Next, I ran the diagnostics by pressing and holding the Menu + Select buttons immediately followed by the Select + Reverse buttons. I stepped through all the diagnostics tests and all tests passed as far as I could tell (there was no errors reported).
    After this, I tried it in iTunes again and still no luck.
    I even tried the iPod on my Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) machine and it behaved the same way. The version of iTunes on that machine was at an earlier version when I first tried it there. I then upgraded iTunes to the latest version but that didn’t help either.
    I can sync my iPod Touch and 2nd gen Nano without any problems.
    Sorry about be long winded about this but I am wondering if anyone else may have other suggestions. I want to try and avoid a restore if possible because I have some videos I recorded that I would like to get off the iPod. I’m not concerned about my music files as I have them always backed up but didn’t get the videos off yet.

    I am having this same problem with my brand new Mac Pro. It seems to be tied to the computer awaking from sleep (no I am not leaving the iPod connected while sleep... I am referring to waking the computer from sleep and then connecting iPod as opposed to restarting the computer and then connecting the iPod). In other words, if you are getting this error message, try ejecting the iPod, restart your computer, then connect the iPod and see if the error message goes away. For me it does, but I only get one shot at it, if I eject the iPod and then reconnect it, the error message returns. This happens on both iPods I have. I have rebooted (hold menu-select) and gone to disc mode (hold select-play) and the error message remains. The only way it goes away is to reboot the computer, then I get one shot at hooking up an iPod.
    I NEVER had nor get this error message when I connect to the Windows PC that I started with. Perhaps the iPod does not like moving from PC to Mac?

    Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

    We have several iPods in th family. 2 iPod Classics, 1 4GB nano. All woking fine until recently. Now when each one is connected we get the same message:

    I have restored all three iPods and updated their software many tens of times in different sequences.
    I have followed all the help forum suggestions and more. Have reinstalled iTunes many times. (before and after registry clean ups.) Have even removed regitry settings for USB upper and lower limits. Have re-installed all USB drivers on teh wintel machine. Have deleted the iPod updater files to force an update to latest iPod s/w version through itunes. Have cleaned registry with some tools I have. Have tried other USB ports. I know the iPods are OK because we have tested them on our MacBook Pro.
    It doesn't matter what I do on this windows XP box - The same message always ends up reappearing.
    I can't find anything on teh support or forum sites that gives any clue to this.
    *Is there anyone out there who has experienced this?*

    My brand new 80GB iPod just arrived, I plugged it in with USBbut when iTunes opens, I get the following error:
    "iTunes had detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
    I tried to restore but i get a new error every time:
    "There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "iPod". The requested resource was not found."
    My firewall isn't blocking iTunes so that isn't the problem, I also tried to reboot and reconnected the iPod multiple times. Also Windows doesn't seem to recognize the iPod as no new drive appear under My Computer. I already erased my Temp-folder but that didn't help either.
    Help!

    Have you tried:
    Going to C:\documents and setting\<username>\application data\apple computer\iTunes\
    and deleting the "Ipod software updates" folder then connecting the iPod to iTunes. I should ask you do download a software update from the apple servers. Furthermore, if if the iPod still isn't showing up I'd change the drive letter on the iPod.
    You can do that by going to the my computer icon, right clicking it and selecting manage. From there select disk management. You should see the iPod in there. What you should do from there is right click the iPod and select "Change drive letter and paths." Change the drive letter to Q. I find that Q is out of the way and is rarely used by the OS for assigning a letter to a network device.
    I'd like to see how that goes.

    In my Computer folder
    Right Click the iPod
    Select properties->tools->error check
    tick both fix filesystem error and surface scan.
    Press  OK
    May take about 2 hours to complete.
    PS: dont be in a hurry to disconnect your iPod, as future recurrence will come, as the HD is almost full, do back up your iTunes library, before your iPod HD gives the dreaded fatal Red X sign.

    I recently noticed little tiny jumps or skips appearing in songs on my 80GB ipod classic, so decided to restore it. Having done this I got the following message:
    "Itunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
    Reconnecting it just brings up the same message. I have Itunes 9.0 and have noticed others here describing problems between the latest versions of Itunes and their iPods.
    Is anyone else experiencing similar problems to mine, or do I just have a faulty iPod? Sadly it's out of warranty, but it is just over 2 years old so I'll be pretty disgusted if it's already broken, as I've looked after it very well.

    Ok, I updated Itunes to 9.03, and so far it seems to have rectified the problem i.e. I'm no longer getting ipod corrupted message, and I can transfer all my songs onto it as normal. Whether it will solve the little ticks I'm hearing in songs throughout my library on the iPod, I've yet to see.
    Sorry and good luck to those having similar problem that cannot find such an easy solution.

You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting again." I disconnected and reconnected many times, I have restarted, check for updates, and finally restored my ipod. It has deleted everything off of my ipod then I get a do not disconnect message that never goes away. What should I do please advise?

    You mentioned restarting, but I'm not sure what you restarted - itunes, I guess?

    "iTunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted" is the error message I continue to get with iTunes v.7.0.1 in Windows XP. My iPod will load on my iMac and let me add songs. I wanted to start using my iPod with my PC so I restored it on the PC. It shows up as Removable Disk (M:) under My Computer. I have uninstalled iTunes and have read just about everything I can to figure out the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Did you do it using the latest iPod updater? In fact, you may want to find a past version of the updater and not use the utility bundled in iTunes 7.0.1.

  • When I connected my iPod to make a playlist, I got a message saying that iTunes had "detected an iPod that might be corrupted" and I could disconnect and try again- which hasn't worked- or restore.  Any thoughts?  I don't want to lose all of my playlists.

    What iPhone do you have? You can check in settings>>general>> about.
    If you have a 3G you cannot update beyond iOS 4.2.1. The 3G is over 4 years old an was discontinued over 2 1/2 years ago. You need the latest ios to run the latest versions of some apps. If you have a 3GS you can update.
    If your phone is not responding, reset it by pressing and holding down both the home button ad lock/ sleep button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

  • My iPod generation 6 160gb will not sync. iTunes says corrupt, won't restore just errors out and then loops the same messages.

    My iPod is corrupt according to iTunes, however it won't restore through iTunes either.  I've tried to reformat the drive.  Makes no difference.  I've tried to reformat after choosing disk manager, and again the same result.  The iPod takes forever to work through the reformatting process and I get the same message "Itunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod" and then my pc tells me to format the disk.
    It's so frustrating, is there a fix to this? It seems like the iPod could still function, but I'm missing the way to get out of this loop, please help me!

    A. Diagnostic mode solution
    If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
    You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
    Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
    The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
    iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"

    You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW".     Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
    I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
    If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod.     Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case.     I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
    Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times

  • Itunes continues to say ipod appears to be corrupted.

    One day i just connected my my ipod to my computer and itunes says that your ipod appears to be corrupted. So I clicked restore and the ipod restored and then appeared on itunes with the same message. Telling me to restore. I literally did this like 10-15 times and it continued to say the same thing. The ipod works once you take it off the computer. The menu is fully functional and nothing is altered but since there is no music on the ipod because of the restoration process. I have to connect it to the computer to add music but then that is when Itunes again says your ipod has been corrupted. Any Help? Thank You

    My iPod classic did the same thing, and I freaked out for the longest time, even went to BestBuy for questions who referred me here. Then I did the basic "re-set" (NOT restore!) of the iPod and it's been working fine since (fingers crossed). Hitting restore (as you found out) wipes out all of the songs/photos/videos/etc. I had to do that previously when my iPod wiped out its files on its own (another topic altogether...).
    The steps to the basic re-set are found in the FAQ troubleshooting support page. I only needed to follow the first two:
    1. Toggle the "hold" button on and off. You will see a little lock appear in the upper right hand corner beside the clock.
    2. Re-set your iPod by simultaneously holding down the Menu and the Select button (center button) until the silver apple appears. A progress bar will also appear and run across the screen (on iPod classics at least).
    Further suggestions:
    3. Always make sure your have the latest iPod software updates and iTunes updates (yeah, it's a pain in the butt as iTunes seems to get a new update everytime you connect to the 'net...). However, the latest versions of iTunes have a screen that tells you if your iPod software is up-to-date.
    4. Make sure your USB port connections are "tight." A loose cable will make it look like the iPod has been disconnected improperly and cause all kinds of recognition problems. Also a faulty or damaged cable (say caused by a family pet who likes to chew wires) may cause recognition problems.
    5. The Geek Squad at Best Buy also suggested to me to reinstall the latest update of iTunes even if you've reset your iPod.
    PS: It has taken almost 3 weeks to reload the songs that were on my iPod before its crash. I always suggest making a backup of your iTunes library. I periodically remove files from the iTunes library on my hard drive and move them to an external drive.
