  • Can you force a Oracle Update Statement to use a specific database thread?

We are attempting to write a Oracle Update Statement to update a value on all records in a single column. We are updating a column with a value found in a history table. Simple enough. We do it all the time. It works but we are having contention issue with users on the system using the main database threads and updating the same table at the same time. So what is happening is the update uses up all the available database threads and then the users just get timeouts and can't update. What we are trying to determine is can I write it to force the update statement to use a specific thread on the database when it is running?
Here is the current update statement
    UPDATE
    TASK_DATA TSK
    SET
    dttSTATUS_WORK_IN_PROGRESS_TIM =
    SELECT
    HIS.T5
    FROM
    H2839 HIS
    WHERE
    TSK.REQUEST_ID = HIS.ENTRYID
    AND
    HIS.T5 IS NOT NULL
    AND
    TSK.dttSTATUS_WORK_IN_PROGRESS_TIM IS NULL

the update uses up all the available database threads and then the users just get timeouts and can't updateI'm not convinced that you're got a clear picture of how Oracle works and what is going on here.
You're updating TASK_DATA, the whole table.
Writers don't block readers - that's a key principle of Oracle.
But if all the other users are trying to update a row or rows in TASK_DATA at the same time as your other process is updating all rows in the table, then there's going to be contention.
This is not about "using up all available database threads" - that's nonsense.
This is (probably) about sessions trying to update rows that your other process has locked.
    1. Get a clear picture of what the sessions are waiting on - it's probably TX locks.
    2. How many rows are you updating with this update on TASK_DATA?
    3. How long does it take? How often do you do it? Is there no quieter time when you can do it?

  • Which tool is used for Oracle 11g performance tuning?

    Hi all
I used statspack for 9i's performance tuning.
But with 11g R2 now I want to know which way are you using to do performance tuning?
Statspack? OSW? RDA? ADDM? Or other ways?
    Thank you.

To read the MOS documents I need a Oracle Customer ID , is that right ?

  • Which tool to use for desktop database app (.exe), flash or flex?

I have spend some time trying to compare the tools, but still something not clear.
The final app should be an .EXE file. There's no web access needed, only local data base access.
What I currently know is that flash cs5 allows to export a projector file (.exe), but not sure about it has database access, and for flex desktop application, it all AIR based so final file is not .exe.
    Thanks!

Your question is not very clear... if  I look at the header of your request you are asking for database tool? if thats the case their are a ton of them sql developer, toad, etc... if you are looking for an exe file out of flex your sadly mistaken. flex produces a swf file html file and a couple of other java files... then you slap those on the server and browse to the html page.
    hope that helps.

  • Oracle Migration Tool

I recently downloaded the Oracle Migration Tool for migrating a
Microsoft Access database to Oracle8 for Linux. This migration
    tool contains the following components:
    1. Oracle Installer 3.3.0.1.3
    2. Oracle Migration Assistant for Microsoft Access 8.0.4.0.0
    3. Oracle Named Pipes Protocol Adapter 8.0.4.0.0
    4. Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.4.0.0
    5. Oracle Objects for OLE 2.2.2.2.0
    6. Oracle TCP/IP Protocol Adapter 8.0.4.0.0
    7. Oracle8 ODBC Driver 8.0.4.0.0
    8. Required Support Files 8.0.4.0.0
I installed everything onto my Windows98 client machine. Once I
did this, I could see the following entries in my Start Menu
    under "Oracle for Windows95":
    1. Microsoft ODBC Administrator
    2. 004002 Class Library Documentation
    3. 004022 Bound Controls and Class Library
    4. 004022 Control Notes
    5. 004022 Release Notes
    6. Oracle Home Selector
    7. Oracle Installer
    8. Oracle Migration Assistant for MS Access
    9. Oracle Objects for OLE Documentation
    10. Oracle ODBC Help File
    11. Oracle ODBC README File
    12. Oracle ODBC Test
When I went into the Microsoft ODBC Administrator, I could also
see that there was a new entry under the ODBC Drivers tab:
Oracle ODBC Driver 8.00.0400 Oracle Corporation SQORA32.DLL
    12/3/97
    So far, so good.
Then I started going through the Oracle8 ODBC help file to get
my machine set up to start using the tool. Under "Configuration
    Tasks," it says the following:
Before you configure the data source, you must configure Net8
database services, so there is an entry for each Service Name.
To do this, start the Oracle Net8 Assistant, either click on the
Oracle for Windows NT program group and click on the Oracle Net8
Assistant icon or from the start bar select Programs, select
Oracle for Windows NT, and select the Oracle Net8 Assistant.
Using the Oracle Net8 Assistant, you can create an entry in the
tnsnames.ora file for each Service Name. The Oracle Net8
Assistant is installed when you install Net8.
That's when I started running into problems. Although the
installer had shown that Net8 had been installed, I could not
find any evidence of a Net8 Assistant on my Windows98 client
machine. Is there a trick to starting up the Net8 Assistant?
Until I am able to perform this step, I cannot go to the next
step of configuring my ODBC driver.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Brendan,
I am not 100% sure, but I believe win98 is not supported.... yet.
I know that 95 is supported, but to be honest, I do not run
winDOZE. Maybe an upper authority from Oracle should correct me
    if I am wrong.

When should each of these tools be used?

Oracle Express is an old, de-supported product that has been replaced by Oracle Database OLAP Server http://otn.oracle.com/products/bi/olap/olap.html.
Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) is a data integration design and management tool. One of OWB's areas of functionality is enabling OLAP. Create standby database on machine 2 on RHEL 5 With Oracle 11gR2 from primary using RMAN active database command
Trying to create logical standby database on machine 3 on RHEL 5 with Oracle 11gR2 using RMAN active database command from primary.
The point which confuse me is to start the logical standby in nomount mode on machine 3 with which pfile like i create the pfile for standby database do i need to create the pfile for logical standby db.

I already started the logical standby database with pfile in nomount mode. And successfully completed the duplication of database. by mentioning the DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT parameter.

  • Can We use FDM as ETL tool between SQL and Oracle

I want to use FDM as ETL tool between SQL and Oracle. Can it be possible. I didn,t found any target adapter for oracle database. My source system is SQL and Target system is Oracle database.
    Rahul
    Edited by: user12190125 on Nov 9, 2009 4:23 AM

    Rahul,
I believe this is possible to do, but not an easy one and there are a few considerations:
How much data are you processing? FDM has a lot of features which support the business process. While this is great for users and audit trail etc. it slows down performance if you want to process a lot of data. It also depends on the type of mappings you use (Like mappings are slower than explicit mappings).
How familiar are you with VBScript? There is no explicit target adapter for Oracle, but there is a data mart adapter which can be used for anything. You have to implement everything yourself though, mainly the Export and Load actions. In there you will also have to handle the the connections to the MSSQL and Oracle databases.
Check the data mart adapter and see if you feel comfortable with defining the vb code in there. There are reasons for and against this approach. ODI would probably be the better choice unless you really need to have FDM's process support.

    Matt
