Is split screen editing possible in FCP X?

Is split screen editing possible in FCP X?
Many thanks!
KJ

mk,
I just searched the FCPX manual in pdf and there is no mention of side by side or picture in picture. So I created it in iMovie and brought into FCPX and got the inspector info. Guess what, it is now called Crop and Transform. And it works very well. You could have any size video in the frame anywhere you wanted it to be. With key frames you could fly them around, I think.
Hope this helps. I was counting on being able to do this with synced music video takes.

  • Split screen edit in FCPX?

I'm having trouble figuring out how to do a split screen edit in Final Cut Pro X. Anyone know how?

It's not a simple as it should be as the keyframe functions in the text controls don't work.
It can be done using the Custom title and title build in/build out properties. Basically make the text the size you want it to be and set In Unit Size to Line. Set the In Scale to zero and the text will scale up. You might also want to set the text baseline down a little so the scale looks more natural.

  • Cool Split Screen method

    Hi All,
My client wants to use a cool split screen edit..
    something like this clip here.
    http://israeljustice.com/files/DITS/SplitScreen.wmv
My question is how to approach it?
I dont want just to scale and crop - because I want to pan&zoom a cross an image.
Right now Im using the "BCC pan and zoom" tool - its working - a bit tedious but works.
I want to add titles that will run across a square and than cut on that square's edge.
    What do say guys?

Do your panning in a separate sequence, then nest that sequence in the main sequence and apply scaling and positioning as desired.
    Cheers
    Eddie

  • Is split screen possible on iMovie HD?

I've just been fooling around with version 5.0.2 and I can't find any way to do a split screen effect. Is it possible to combine too clips together in any way other than a transition such as a wipe?

Yes, as Bengt describes. Here is how to do it in Quicktime Pro:
Organise the video clips and/or stills that you want to superimpose on to your main video clip, by having these in separate, individual iMovie projects (no matter how small). It helps if these are in the exact length/time you want later.
Now start with the clip in your iMovie project on to which you want to superimpose one of more smaller video clips or stills. Lets call it Main Clip. Export this (share) to Quicktime Pro in DV (full quality). make sure it has the same aspect as before (Quicktime tends to default to 4:3. If you want 16:9, read on).
In Quicktime, with this project open, select File ~ Open File. Select the iMovie file (in your movies folder) of the first clip/still you want superimposed. This will open in its own QT window. Select Edit ~ copy. If it is a movie clip then select all ~ copy (or you will only get one frame!). Switch back to the Main Clip window, and click in the scroll bar where you want the extra clip/still to appear. Choose Edit ~ Add to Movie.
You can repeat this as many times as you like, if you want to build a 'Video Wall', i.e. have several superimposed clips/stills on the same Main Clip.
Do not worry that the new clip overlaps or covers up the Main Clip, at this stage.
Choose Window ~ Show Movie Properties. The Properties Dialogue appears.
You will see a list of video (and audio) tracks. Track one will be the Main Clip, track 2 your new added (superimposed) clip. Click track 2, then click visual settings. From the Scaled Size pop-op menu, choose percent. Then type 50 into the first box. If Preserve Aspect Ratio is turned on you won't need to type 50 into the second box. You have made the pasted footage appear at one quarter its original size. The inset is now hugging the top-left corner of the Main Clip. If you want, you can type numbers into the Offset Boxes to shove it away from that corner (there are 72 pixels to the inch).
If your original Main Clip was required in 16:9, unclick (de-select) Preserve Aspect Ratio, and type in 1920 in the first box, and 1080 in the second, in Video Track 1. This will not affect video track 2, but if that is also wanred in 16:9 repeat for that track.
You can superimpose, 3, 4, or more such 'overlaps' on the same clip, and spend a happy afternoon tapping away for each track in the Offset Boxes until you have got them all in the right place! You can even overlap them, if you can remember (or note down - hire a secretary to take notes) which track you want on top etc.
Save the completed QT file. Import the completed file into a new iMovie project. Import this into the original iMovie project, substituting the old clip you copied to QT as Main Clip for the new fancy clip you have made.
You will probably need to experiment a bit with the above. I know, it took me two days to master it the first time. Result: in the Wedding Video I made, during the Best Man's speech, he is relating a story about his brother (the groom) breaking his surfboard in half and swearing at the Atlantic Ocean whilst hitting it with his broken surfboard. While he is saying all that a superimposed video appears of the groom doing exactly that - a video I took 14 years previously! Moreover, the wedding video is in 16:9, but the inset clip is in its original 4:3 aspect!
    Cool or what!
    Have fun!

  • Split Screen. Is it possible?

Would love to be able to run multiple video streams at the same time. Other than picture in picture, which is very limiting, are there any other ways to have several movies playing at the same time within one picture. I got the feeling I know the answer. This would make editing so much fun, especially if you have two cameras.

Two cameras isn't a problem for imovie, but to do the split screen and other things you want to do I'd take a look at Final Cut Express.

witch software can i use to do split screen on video editing on a macbook pro
please apple people without using the very expensive final cut

iMovie 11 has split screen. Enable the Advanced Tools in iMovie Preferences. Then drag one clip on top of the other and choose split screen.
Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro will allow you to do this with a lot more control.

  • Clean split screen

i am working on a project and i'm having a split screen. i've done the split screen with (crop and scale) on FCP but after i do that the video seems to have fuzzy edges. i've noticed on my external viewing monitor. what do i do to clean up the edges of the film to make it look better. thanks!

It is possible to add your own web pages to the Help database. As with all things hackish, you should work on a copy in case it gets out of whack.
Go to Library > Documentation > Help > Machelp.help and control-click to show package contents. Got to Contents > English.lproj and you will find lots of web pages. After you make a new page, you'll need to add keyword matches to the ExactMatch.plist as well as meta tags to the HTML source of the page. It's not an easy method so unless you want to add Help topics for an organization, forget it.
When I did support for Dell, I found their support documents a bit meager and those from Microsoft very archanely searchable so I made web pages for all my notes and bookmarked them in Netscape. Many other technicians at Dell asked for copies to add to their Netscape (IE was lame in this respect).

  • IPODS AND SPLIT SCREENS

I have Premiere Elements 4.0.  Is there any way to be able to take music off Ipod's or CD's and put them on your computer in your project to edit with?  We have tried, but are not having any luck.  I know they need to me in MP3 form.  Is there anything to do with MP4 forms to get them on the computer and usuable?  Also, how do you create a split screen in projects?  Thanks!
    Kelly

You can "rip" the Audio from a CD and bring that into PE to use as an Asset.
If the Audio is already on a CD, then any ripping software can extract (rip) the files. I would work with PCM/WAV 44.1 KHz 16-bit files, and not MP3's, as there *can* be problems with the latter. PE will conform the 44.1 KHz material to 48 KHz 16-bit for you. This might take a second, when you Import the WAV file, so let it complete that operation. PE will generate a CFA and a PEK file for the Audio. The latter is the Waveform Display file. There will likely be a little blue progress bar at the lower-right edge of your GUI. The freeware Audio editor, Audacity, will do this for you. I happen to use Adobe Audition, as it offers much more power and control, but that would be overkill for most people's needs.
Now, if the music is on an iPod, you'll want to go into iTunes (the copy that is synced to that iPod) and create a Playlist containing the music that you want. You will then burn that Playlist to a CD from within iTunes. This will yield the files in CDA format on the CD and you'll follow the instructions above. Though the music is going from the iTunes compressed format to CDA and then is ripped to WAV, you will NOT restore the file to an uncompressed form, though the file you'll get will be uncompressed. Once iTunes has compressed the music file initially, the "damage" has been done. It will never be as good as the source file that Apple created their m4p file from.
If the music is just on an iPod and you do not have access to the synced iTunes program, there is a utility called iGadget, that will extract the music from the iPod. There is a free version, plus a paid version. I think that the main difference is that the free version does it one song at a time, where the paid version allows for multiple files to be off-loaded at once. I am not overly familiar with iGadget. You will sitll need a copy of iTunes to do the CD burning from a Playlist. IIRC, iTunes will allow up to 7 burns from a Playlist. With older versions of that program, one could create different Playlists to get around that 7 copy limit. I *think* that the newer versions plug that loophole, but am not sure.
If at all possible, I'd not use MP3 format. Some of those files work, but some do not. Embedded "Album Art" has been cited as a possible cause for the failure of some of the MP3's. Also, MP3 is heavily compressed. Going back to as close to the source, as is possible, will yield better Audio.
If I only have an MP3 file, I always convert to PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit, outside of my NLE program, i.e. PE, or PrPro. Again, I use Audition for this, but Audacity should work fine too. Remember, once compressed, you will never be able to fully restore the lost quality of the file. Just do not compress any more by going from an m4p to an MP3 format, as you will loose even more fidelity.
There was a good step-by-step for working with iTunes, in the FAQ's section. However, I do not think that those have been restored, since the forum redo. My steps above are basically an abstract of the info in the FAQ's.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 - Split Screen

I am currently editing a PIF for my college course and i am trying to make a dual/ split screen effect, however i cannot work out how to do it, its really frustrating, i started out by trying to crop the footage but that causes the footage to be jumpy.
any help on this subject would be awesome!
just ask for any more information you may need.
    thanks

FWIW, FCP 4.5 wasn't designed to run on the OS you list in your profile. It runs best on OS 10.3.9 with QT 6.5.2.

  • Color Correction split screen comparison

I'm looking for a way to Color Correct a Multiclip made up of 3 angles from an interview.
I would like to do a split screen so I can match colors of one angle to the next.
FCP had a thing where you could split screen and select part of the screen as last edit, next edit, in point etc.
I only see in Premiere to do a comparison split screen of the CC on and off.
    Thanks
    Paul

Simply I would line up  whichever was the Reference Clip and and CC / grade the other to match.
Check with scopes later but primary work is done to "eyeball" and in the case of the 1st Clip..Use the Reference Monitor with a scope.

  • Split screen causes artifacting in images - what is the solution?

After creating a four image split screen (two frames on top, two frames on the bottom), the images in each box suffer from extreme artifacting. By that I mean the images breaks down. For example, grass that in the original images is clearly and cleanly visible, suddenly becomes very "noisy" once I have added it to the split screen.
I have gone through several attempted solutions, but have all failed to solve the problem.
The degradation is most noticable when I export to a Mpeg2 and burn to a DVD, but I have eliminated the possibility that it is breaking down in the Mpeg2 conversion. Instead, it seems to be happening within Final Cut Pro.
Can anyone offer suggestions that might help?

Patrick. Thanks very much for jumping in.
For clarification, the images in the split screens are not photos. They are films. Four films in four boxes playing on the screen at the same time. Therefore, correct me if I'm wrong, your Photoshop advice doesn't work here. Also, I do not have Motion.
I took a look at the suggestion in your final paragraph. I have Final Cut Pro HD 4.5, but nevertheless went through your suggested workflow. Ctrl-clicked on the sequence - selected settings - clicked on the Video Processing tab. I don't have a sampling setting as you indicate per se, but I did try changing the only apparently appropriate setting in FCP 4.5, which was to change from Render in 8-bit YUV to Render all YUV material in High Precision YUV. This took twice as long to render the sequence, but unfortunately had no positive effect.
So, I am still in the position of having 4 great looking videos sequences, that I am trying to combine into one 4-squared split screen, but when I do so each of the four sequences deteriorates substantially.
Do you have any other suggestions? I would be grateful for your experience.

  • Using local/testing server with cs5 inserting images look fine in the split screen but do not show

    Hi
If I open example: header.php and insert any photo jpeg/.html ecs i can see the images in the split screen but not in the browser if i save then refresh. I am able to make any change to the code ecs. and they are reflected just fine. I have tried this with my fireworks images .html and when that did not work i tried a strait jpeg off the desktop. This all did not work. I have deleted the local server then step by step created a new one via devnet instruction. This did not work! everything looks fine i even tried in 3 sep browsers with 0 luck....There is no remote server connected at this time because i am making a child theme for my current site. After all changes are done we will the ftp the word press files to site and change.
Ps i even started over from scratch with 0 positive affects....

After a lot of pain!!!!!!! the issue is fixed lol After 3 weeks I have overlooked the obvious !!! so the simple fix was the path of the image. Yes i feel stupid 10 years in lol....
Apparently dreamweaver cs 5 will not use the full path when inserting images into the page example: If you drag the image out of your assets folder or however you do it, DW will give you a path like this <img src="images/glass.jpg" width="800" height="729"> This is not the full path and when your pist!!! you cant see things like that ;( so the image path should look like this:
    <img src="wp-content/themes/adszoom/images/glass.jpg" width="800" height="729">
also in the html files example of bad then good!

  • Split screen becoming unstable? (iMovie 11)

Hello. I am having a problem with a split screen movie that I don't understand. I have two film clips of me drumming that were recorded on two camcorders simultaneously. I have imported them into iMovie 11, and used the split screen function to create a movie with both camera angles showing. I have muted the audio files on the camcorder foootage, and imported an MP3 file of the drum track recorded using Logic Express. I managed to get all three of these synched together and it worked wonderfully well.
I then decided to add an additional film clip, and some titles, before the split screen movie. At first this seemed to work fine also. However, when I played the whole project back, I found that about 75% of the way through the split screen section, one of the split screen clips suddenly jumped and then seemed to repeat itself - so of course the split movie no longer was synched.
What is happening here? I noticed that as I gradually 'undid' things, I found a point where the split screen movie was 'fixed again'. It seems as if inserting a clip and audio before the split screen section is what caused the problem. Have I violated some fundemental law of making split screen movies ('Thou shalt not insert a clip in front of it?'). Visually, the inserted clip appeared to be entirely seperated from the split clip, and I could not see why it would be interfering with the split clip.
    Many thanks.

I think it's a good thing you attempted to troubleshoot it, and got it working again. I'm thinking the problem is with iMovie being able to playback everything in the Preview window.
What I've seen from reading a lot of posts on this Discussion Group is iMovie can get overwhelmed with 'Effects' types of material add to the timeline. Not to say it can't handle them, but sometimes maybe certain combos really make it work harder than others. So this almost always shows up as an inability to do a live preview of the Project Timeline, but can sometimes be fixed by working backward to the point where the preview starts working again. There is no iMovie documentation or even third party books written that really lay out what is the upper limit of what you can do on the iMovie Timeline. So the only other thing to do is operate under the assumption that iMovie is working extra hard to play one of your bits of media while doing everything else on the timeline. So here's a file format, and frame dimensions best practice guideline to double-check.
    1. For video, you can pre-convert clips to the Apple Intermedia Codec and the Large frame size (960x540) iMovie uses internally to playback and allow you to edit accurately down to the frame level (1/30th of a second). One conversion program often recommended for this is MPEG Streamclip which can convert to .mov formatted internally as Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)
    2. For audio, you can pre-convert sound to AIFF 16bit @ 48kHz, which is easier for iMovie to playback than a highly compress format, say like MP3 (which is adding to the workload of iMovie as it tries to do a live preview). You can convert in Logic or any other audio program you like. Side benefit to 16bit @ 48kHz is that's often the sound sample rate of the embedded audio in video shot on most consumer brand camcorders on the market. It will make it easier to match sync when sampe rates of sound clips = sample rate of video sound
    3. Lastly one thing that might help workaround the limit of iMovie's Live Preview playback is to export that well synced up split screen/audio combo to a new video clip. Just go to Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large Size) and save it to the desktop. Re-import that finished clip, and drag it into a new Project, start adding all the clips you want in front of that clip and it won't go out of sync as it's a monolithic video clip now with the video/audio locked to one another.

  • Split-screen menus: do you find them useful?

    Hi all,
this post could be a reminder for Apple, for the next firmware update.
This depends on you, that's why i'm asking you people:
do you find the split-screen menus useful?
Would you appreciate the possibility of turning them off?
Excluding the usual problems with iTunes, my ipod 160 is working very good. The only annoying this is the gap for loading the previews in the split-screen.
    Thank you

I quite like the whole split screen thing as it happens. It probably helps that I've got album art for every track. I agree, however, that it would be nice to have an option to turn it off for those that don't like it.
What would be really cool though is if you could play an album you've just spotted on right-hand side of the screen. E.g. Play in split screen opens the displayed album. Left & right clicks go forward & backwards in the random album order that was generated, in case you spot somthing that interests you as it vanishes off screen. The wheel, menu & center click would continue to provide for selecting music in the traditional fashion.
Agree with comments on the clock. I'd like an option to leave the screen alone and just turn off the backlight. Backlight delay needs to be fixed. IFRC 30secs setting still turns off after 20 secs. What about an option to maintain backlight at lower (selectable) brightness for a user selectable number of minutes?
