Is the new iMac really faster for video coding?

I recently bought the new Imac 27 inches, 3.2 GHz. I mainly need this speed to edit and to code my bluray movies from African safaries journeys
Until last year use an 2008 iMac. Editing was fine but coding was very long (up to 6 hours for 40' with the best performace parameters und 2 passes)- I use Adobe Première.
With my new Imac editing is more convenient but coding ist not much shorter (up to 5 hours 30' for 40' with the same parameters). I was exepecting a much shorter coding time. What the purpose of  nice marketing specs like high speed und turbo boost if they cannot really be applied in specific applications like video coding.
Or am I mistaken?
Regards
Patrice

Hi Patrice,
Within Apple’s slim new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, based on our new Kepler-class architecture, which helps make them up to 60 percent faster than last year’s models. This follows news in June that Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses Kepler GeForce GPUs.
The new 27-inch iMac offers the GeForce GTX 660M as its base GPU, with even faster GeForce GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680MX GPUs available. The 21.5-inch model comes with the GeForce GT 640M GPU, with an available upgrade to the GeForce GT 650M GPU.

So, any Apps that use the GPU to assist GPU should be much faster.
Though I don't see it listed here, it may be too new, I suspect it may be supported...

  • Is the new iMac a step forward for video editing?

    Hi,
Do the changes in the new iMacs make them better video editing machines?
    Thanks

Faster system, more RAM (which can be added to the previous model) and new graphics system (which won't affect graphics editing much if at all). That's basically what I see. Since I have no complaints about video editing with my year old iMac I'm not rushing out to buy.

  • Disappointed with the new iMac 2011

I bought a new iMac 21.5 inch 2011 model replacing my plastic iMac. When I first bought it, I was very excited because it got all the top reviews.
Then, my first iMac had 2 dead pixels on the top of the screen, it was very annoying so I got an exchange. The second one have no screen issues, but it has very annoying buzzing sound from the top of the back panel. Then I get the third exchange, and this one still has the annoying buzzing sound from the bottom part of the panel, and a notable dust particles trapped inside the screen encasing. I went to the apple store several times, they are saying they won't do any more exchange, and the buzzing sound is not noticable and it is the part of the nature of iMac.
I am very disappointed with this iMac model, I am wondering if any other users have similar experience with the new iMac.
Thanks for forum administrator keeping this post.

I am like many users who wanted a machine for media development, wow, the Mac has a reputation for being good at that. However, I'm one who has had problems. I have never actually hated a machine before now. I am unable to multi-task, I have no software available for development except for the xcode IDE which changes weekly, rendering all highly expensive books and classes obsolete and useless within a week of purchase.
Also, if you want to multi-task, I'm unable to load multiple tabs or browser windows without this machine halting to a crawl. I've spent at least a total of 20 hours on the phone with idiots who barely speak english to help me out. I've spent at least three full Saturdays at the so-called genius bar in town. I cannot load more than one application at a time and get decent performance. OMG, apple has set me back decades.
Many will say this is probably due to my ISP. NO. I have my trusty HP machine here and I can actually boot it up and load the browser (IE) in the time it takes for an already booted iMac with Safari with a linked clicked before. So the ISP is great. It's the iMac that *****.
One good thing that has come from this peice of sht though. It is a true test of my restraint and tolerance for crap.
I am actually now willing to give up apple development altogether because of the poor performance and lack of decent software for the same.
I am now able to say good riddence APPLE! This is NOT the direction I am headed.
That is all I have to say.

  • How much faster or better is the new iMac... really?

    Hello all,
I have a 20" 2.33Ghz C2D iMac w/256Meg video RAM, and 3Gig of RAM. I understand that many factors come in to play when you compare the over all speed of a computer. How much faster, over all, is the new iMacs over the system I have? Has anyone tested the two next to each-other yet? I am sure the new one is faster in some ways, but is it really lots faster in over all performance, or just a little?

  • We are getting ready to purchase the new iMac 27" and would like to know which is best for watching streaming video, the fusion drive or the more expensive flash drive only

We are getting ready to purchase the new imac 27" and would like to know which is the best configuration for watching streaming video, the fusion drive or the more expensive flash drive.  We will have a fast fiberoptic internet connection.

the harddisk speed mean nothing when it comes to streaming video from the internet
even the fastests internet using fiberoptics is still much slower then the slowests harddisk you can buy

  • Is the new iMac faster than my PowerMac G5 dual 2Ghz?

I have a PowerMac G5, Dual 2Ghz (first generation model)
2.5GB Ram, and a ATI 9800 Pro 256mb Graphics Card.
Looking at the SPEC ratings on the Apple page, the new iMac (2.0Ghz model) scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 32.6
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 27.1
And according to http://www.apple.com/lae/g5/ the dual 2Ghz scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 15.7
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 17.2
Doesn't this mean is roughly twice as fast? Does SPEC just measure the processor or the whole system?
And how does my ATI Radoen 9800 Pro 256MB compare to the ATI Radeon X1600 256MB?
    Thanks!

I agree. Specs are great and certainly are helpful in comparing the new MacBook to the new iMac as they are quite similar. What's really interesting is how PowerPC coded apps will compare to their universal binary equivalents on the new machines. I for one am curious to see how the universal binary of FCP Studio runs on the new iMac vs today's PowerMac. While people have been using FCP tools on G5 iMacs and G4 PowerBooks, performance isn't nearly as good as the same app on a Dual or Quad G5 PowerMac. It could usher in a whole new segment of Pro tools users who can get good performance from a less expensive option like the new iMac.

  • Any Thoughts on New iMac Fusion Drive for Editing Video

I was wondering if there were any thoughts about the new iMac for editing 720/1080 HD video from say an iPhone 5 or Canon Power Shot camera. The drive speed is now only 5400 RPM in the 21.5" model. I was curious if the the combo SSD/5400 RPM HDD had the same editing power as as a 7200 RPM drive.

Thanks, I've read it, well I should say I've tried to read it. Somewhat over my head, but not totally. I'm just curious if some of the video editing tasks would be done on the HDD or faster SSD drive. I'll have to go back to the article and see if there is any mention of that type of task.
I'm a little disappointed that you need to move up to the 27" iMac to get a 7200 RPM Fusion Drive. Do not need a 27" desktop.

  • Is the new imac's thunderbolt ports allows video input?

For the last imac, the tech specs says the mini display port could be used as a input (which output device has to be supporting display port).
In the new imac tech specs.... i couldn't find any thing about video input, only about that the 2 thunderbolt could be use as video output.
So would i be able to use it as a screen?
Also, i wanna connect my ps3 and use the imac as a screen!
    (It's a fantastic full HD screen~)
I have seen sth like this "PS3 and LED Cinema Display Solution (also DVI to Mini DP) - MacRumors Forums"
and it just cost too much that is enough for me to get a new screen!
So if the new imacs have video inputs.... than tht means this thing "Connecting A PlayStation 3 To Your iMac « Being BigMacky " will work!
Well the adapter cost me only 150 bucks~
The problem is..... does the thunderbolt ports could use it as an video input?

So seems like, the popular Kanex XD and Belkin HDMI to Mini Display Port adapters would not work for the current imac generation.
This is what I got from the Kanex company:
    "Question:
So i suppose this does not work on the latest imacs (released a few days ago)?
    Answer:
Our Kanex XD requires modification to work with the new thunberbolt iMac
    27-inch.
We are under development of a newer version. Please look out for an
    announcement soon.
In the mean time the Kanex XD still works for iMac 27 2009-early 2011 and also the LED Cinema Display 27-inch. "
This means there will soon be 3rd party developer creates a new signal converter (which is definitely a good news)
but i won't get the imac until the converter/adapters is released..... i really nedd this feature man!

  • Better to go for the new iMac 24" 2.66GHz or the old iMac 24" 2.8GHz?

The old one's at $1199 in refurb
The new one's at about $1340 after an education discount
I guess the new one for the extra $140 or so will hold its resale value better - but is it a better computer and worth the extra $$$s?
Also I don't think the question's really been answered - are the processors different in the new iMacs - have they been physically updated in any way?
Which is it better to go for? Just want to run Logic Studio 8 on it.
    Thanks.

Well for your $140 difference you get twice the RAM, twice the hard drive space, and a better/faster graphics chip set.
I don't know if the processors are materially different other than speed and the difference is not significant, so I wouldn't stress to much over the 2.66 vs. 2.8 speed ratings since for most processes it probably won't make a difference, but the 2.66 one will probably seems a bit faster since it has twice the RAM. Also, while super expensive right now, the RAM on the newer ones allow you to upgrade to 8gigs of RAM (once those DDR3 SODIMM RAM prices drop). Are the old models limited to 4MB max?
For only $140 difference, I would go with the new model since the upgrades you get more than cover that. I would only consider the older refurbs if you were picking between two models with a much larger price difference.

  • Sales Tax for the new iMac

I'm sorry, I know this is probably not the right place to pose a question about sales tax, but I could not find the right category =/
If you think I should re-write this question in another category, I will
So, my situation is: I live in Brazil, and I have a friend who's going to the US in October. She is going to buy the new iMac for me.
I read on Apple's website that Sales Tax may apply. In which cases? If my friend goes to the retail store (instead of ordering it's shipment), does she has to pay this tax? how much is it normally? Does it depend on the State?
(And I only ask this because it's really not clear at apple.com and I don't know how sales tax work in the US...)
so thank you for your help!

Your question is really inappropriate to the Apple Discussions. The AD is a user-to-user forum for helping with technical problems and questions for Apple products. Sales taxes is certainly not one of those topics.
However, to answer your question. If your friend purchases a Mac in the Apple store or if you purchase it via the online store taxes will be charged. Sales taxes in the US are typically between 6-8 percent of the purchase cost depending upon the state in which it is purchased. There are a few states that do not levy sales taxes such as Nevada and Montana.
In addition when your friend takes the computer into your country you will likely be charged with import duties and taxes as well. If it's your expectation that this ploy will save you some money I wouldn't count on it.

  • Video streaming on the new imac

I just bought a new iMac and cannot watch video on the CBC's website, what do i have to do?

Actually, I just solved it. I had tried the Flip4 Mac solution, and it did not work. The problem lay in the public versus personal library. There is no internet plugin folder in the personal library on an Imac. I don't know why. However, there are Internet plugin folders on my other 3 computers (non IMacs) in both the public and personal library folders. When ABC installs its plugin, it puts it in the personal library plugin folder on the non IMac computers. I simply copied one of those folders with the installed, working plugin from my G5, and put it in my IMac personal library folder, and it played!
    Thank you for helping.

  • How can a video editor use an NTSC studio monitor on the new iMac without a Firewire 400 port?

Looking at the new iMacs (hungrily) and wondering how I will be able to continue using my Sony DSR-11 and NTSC monitor in the absence of any Firewire 400 port.  I suppose there may be cables that will allow me to use the Firewire 800 port and am thinking they may be difficult to locate.

No they're not - they're available from many sources; i.e. I bought a FW 400 > 800 cable when I bought my iMac last August (at an authorized local reseller). Just google Firewire 400 > 800 and you'll get plenty of results. You can also opt for an adapter if you prefer. Both are also available at the Apple store online.
