Is there a better way to get rid of desktop icons?

My project has two things left: 1. get rid of desktop icons during the script 2. Ensure that windows don't open during the script.
so for part one, I have the following:
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool " & false
the problem is I can't change the desktop background picture when I use the above script. Without it, I can but I have icons.
The second issue is how I set up a handler in the event that windows open during the script, blocking the desktop-image message. I want to close all windows and keep them closed during the script. Here is what I have so far, but it doesn't work:
on exists windows of processes where the visible is true
tell application "Finder"
set willey to get (windows where the (exists) is true) of processes where the visible is true
set the exists of willey to false
end tell
end exists
PowerBook G4 1.67 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Even if you manage to change the static desktop picture, you're going to have to find a way to disable the dynamic desktop picture that many users will have activated. This "Change picture" feature is controlled by Dock.app, not Finder. If you quit or kill the Dock, the system automatically respawns it ad infinitum. The only way around that is to temporarily move or rename dock.app, which requires administrator privileges. I'm not particularly inclined to offer my password to prank apps, are you?
If I were you I'd take a look at Salling Clicker. I know that sounds crazy, but hear me out: In the Salling distro there is a neat freeware FBA called "SEC Helper" that lets you post Growl-like notices to the user, without the hassle of relying on a Growl install. It has a full-screen option that you can set up just like a slideshow.
click here to open this script in your editor<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:400px">tell application "SEC Helper"
"/Library/Desktop Pictures/Plants/Petals.jpg"
show screen picture data (read (POSIX file result as alias) as picture) with full screen
end tell</pre>

Is there an easy way to get rid of duplicates in your music library?

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership.See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • Get rid of desktop icons temporarily

Re Neutral screen. So far so good. I have got workflow set up so I can change between wallpapers, but now I want to remove desk top icons in one of my wallpaper options so that I have a plain screen. ??
    thx

    Hi me-p,
One way to get rid of your desktop icons temporarily would be to automate a move of them all to a folder somewhere else, and then another one which moves them back. Another option would be to rename them all with a prepending period making them invisible, and then restoring their names when done. Unfortunately both of these options are fraught with pitfalls and weaknesses which would require lots of error checking and likely even then would be quite problematic.
I think this is an excellent opportunity to take a step up in the computing world and completely clear off your desktop. Storing any files there is actually a very inefficient use of system resources and ideally it should be empty. Make use of spaces, the dock, finder windows and an efficient folder heirachy to keep your computer running fast by keeping your desktop clean.

  • I bought a iphone from a guy on craislist and i wanted to know if there is another way to get rid of the account because he wont answer my calls or texts

    icloud problem

No, there is no way around this. You've bought a useless, and probably stolen, phone. You shouldn't buy iPhones off of Craigslist (which you now, sadly, know).

  • Is there any way to get rid of unwanted icons?

Hi: Some icons can be removed by holding until all the icons start to 'flash' and the garbage can appears. But this only works for some. Things like Podcasts, Adobe Reader or Video Store don't have a garbage can. Is there any way to tidy up the screen by remving unwanted icons?
    Thanks.

    Solved!

No, as these are considered 'core' apps.
I'd suggest just dropping them in a folder out of the way.

  • I am getting a message in the middle of my imac screen instructing me to hold down the on-off button and turn off the machine. The message is in several foreign languages beside english, and there is not way to get rid of it. The curser is inactive.

I am getting a message in the middle of my imac screen instructing me to hold down the on-off button and turn off the computer. The message is in several languages and completely takes over the computer disabling the mouse and all other functions. The only option is to unplug the computer or turn it off. I'm concerned that this is a virus. It does not look like it's related to Apple or the imac OS.

That sounds like a kernel panic. These are generally hardware related, often caused by poorly seated or fauly RAM.

  • Is there a way to get rid of dead pixels on an iphone?

I have dead pixels (dead spots is what I am used to calling them) on my iphone 4 screen. I dont know if there is a way to get ride of all of them without getting new iphone. There are quite a lot of them. And if I do indeed need to get a new iPhone, how much would it be? I only have the one year warrenty and its been over a year.

A "dead pixel" is a transistor that refuses to switch properly, and there's nothing you can do to fix individual pixels.  Apple offers an out-of-warranty replacement iPhone for about $150 + tax.

  • Is there a way to get rid of dark hue at the top of the screen for the iPhone 4 with iOS7.1?

I was just wondering, after updating the OS to iOS 7.1 to see if there is a way to get rid of a dark hue at the top of the screen. Before updating the wallpaper looked normal (just like the original picture), but after updating there was sudden a dark hue at the top of the screen. Is there anyway to get rid of it, because it's getting in the way of the wallpaper.

Try and slightly zoom in on the image and relocate it until the hue is gone. You shouldn't have to zoom in too much just a little bit Nd try moving the image around until the phone believes it doesn't need to contrast anymore. Good luck

  • I am worried that someone has hacked my webcam on my iPad is that possible? And if so is there a way to get rid of it without having to go into the store?

IS there a way to hack into someone iPad webcamera? and if there is can you get rid of it by yourself and not have to go into the store? Thank you sooo much!

Unless you have jailbroken your iPad, no one has hacked into it. If that isn't enough to allay your fears, put a piece of masking tape over it. There is no way to get rid of the camera, even if you take it to the Apple Store.
    Best of luck.

  • Any way to get rid of Relative Date display in Mail?

This is a long standing problem for me and macs for as long as I can remember. I can't stand relative dates, and no matter what I do they always reappear. I just switched to MacMail and much to my disappointment, I find relative dates there too. Is there ANY permanent way to get rid of Relative Dates once and for all?

Carsten, you CAN get rid of the "negative number" entries. If you use the wizard to build the dimension, when it's all done, go back into the dimension object and delete the default "standard" hierarchy that gets created. Even though you apparently DO have to have a default level, you do NOT need to have a default hierarchy.
This will get rid of the negative numbers and associated logic from the loads...but you still end up with both a DIMENSION_KEY and KEY column...both having exactly the same value in it.
I wish Oracle would give you an option when creating a dimension to specify whether or not it's a dimension with levels...and if you said NO it would simply have a DIMENSION_KEY without any other keys. Glad to hear though that I wasn't missing something obvious on how to turn that off.
    Thx,
    Scott

  • Is there any way to get rid of the audio message that I have unlimited minutes when I make a call? I want that 10 seconds of my life back :)

When I make a call I get an audio message that I have unlimited minutes and then dial the number. Is there any way to get rid of that message? Because I really want to get back those 10 seconds back, Ha, Ha, not!

Whoever thought this new search box GUI was a good idea was mistaken IMHO.
I've used the method shown above to return it to the old constant icon/text display with instantly available drop down of my alternative chosen search engines. All back to how it was in the previous version. Yay!
Displaying the chosen default search engine icon/text in the search box just seems a better and more sensible GUI feature to me than needing to hover over the box to show the same information (minus icon) . As for having to start entering search terms before the other search engine options become available - that is just plain ill conceived design.
The old design is more user friendly and should be the default setting but if some users want the new GUI for the search box why not include that under Tools > Options?

  • Is there a way to get rid of (or hide) scuffs on the chamfered edge of the iPhone 5?

Hello, this is my first post on these forums! I originally purchased an iPhone 5 four or five days after the release. When I opened my phone up, the chamfered edge was very banged up and the apple logo on the back had received some major scratches. Because of this, I called Apple and informed them of my issue. They promptly sent me a new phone and I sent them my old one back. The new phone was in pristine condition (as the first should have been), and only a few days later the phone slid out of my hand and onto my MacBook Air's palm rest area that was only an inch or so below it. This one little incident cause a very large scrape on the chamfered edge of my phone, causing it to be white and stick out like a sore thumb (I have the black iPhone 5). This was an incredibly minor drop and I'm very disappointed that it was damaged as much as it was. My case is in the mail and I wasn't planning on having my phone be naked, but this seriously frustrates me considering I paid a premium for a beautiful (and supposedly durable) device. So, my question to all of you is: is there a way to get rid of (or hide) scuffs on the chamfered edge? The case I'm going to be getting will hide it, but I know that it will bring the resale value in two years way down by just having this little scuff (plus it's really ugly to even have to look at when I clean my phone after taking the case off). I was wondering if anyone has found a solution to this problem. Thanks!

Im sorry to sound negative but why on earth would any company exchange a phone that has been dropped and as a result scuffed. Its aluminium. Its a very very soft metal. Damage straight out of the box is why thing. carelessness is something completely different. As for "take it back, Apple will probably change it" ? Do you not think these guys are getting a bit sick of hearing all this.
Personally I like the build quality of the Iphone 4, which in anycase I keep in an Otterbox.
This forum has some great posts. But honestly some of it is complete nonsense.
