Is there a CDN Issue? Certain websites half loadin...

Hi,
A few weeks ago my trusty DG834G router decided to stop connecting to the internet (or even acknowledging I had an ADSL connection, very odd) so I've had to (reluctantly!) promote the BT homehub from access point to main router.
I'm fairly sure it's completely unrelated to my router switching but ever since doing so I've had sporadic issues connecting to certain sites. It's extremely frustating.
Half the sites will tend to load, but hang on loading various elements - stylesheets, javascript etc. This happens on multiple devices.
I believe I've tracked the issue down to CDNs (content-distribution-networks), specifically Akamai.
For example, when loading the BBC site my browser hangs loading assets from bbcimg.co.uk. When loading eBay it hangs loading assets from rtm.ebaystatic.com and from Facebook fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net.
Doing an nslookup against these servers show they all appear to be farmed out to Akamai.
(note, my router is correctly at 192.168.0.253)

Note that from my connection it resolves to 213.120.157.18 but from our servers it resolves to 23.63.99.224. I can telnet to 23.63.99.224 perfectly fine from my home connection.
I understand the point of a CDN is to split the load between servers so I may expect to see different IPs but 213.120.157.18 appears to be owned by BT. Are BT hosting their own CDN network which is killing my connection?
Please could this be escalated to someone in your networking department to investigate? I can only assume it's not just me having this issue and the issue appear to be fairly simple to fix.
Many thanks.

Hi
I'm having precisely the same problems, and have been for the last couple of weeks - everything works fine, except for CDN-hosted content.
The addresses I cannot connect to are the same as the ones in the original post - eg:
tracert node1.bbcimg.co.uk
Tracing route to a1092.g.akamai.net [213.120.157.72]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  router [10.X.X.X]
  2    42 ms    42 ms    41 ms  217.47.13.186
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
Changing DNS server (to e.g.: 8.8.8.8) doesn't help - returns the same (unresponsive) IP addresses.
I'm aware of the BBC-related problems from a week or two ago, and my problems seem to have started at around the same time, but I get problems on various websites - anything that doesn't respond seems to be Akamai related.
It's not consistent either.  Whilst writing this, the result I get from nslookup has now changed to 213.120.161.186 & 213.120.161.200, and suddenly I can see the BBC News website again.
At the same time, I can't access store.steampowered.com.  nslookup on that gives a1507.d.akamai.net, 213.120.157.32 213.120.157.74 213.120.157.67
So - I seem to be getting two ranges back for Akamai CDN servers from DNS queries - sometimes I'm getting 213.120.157.X addresses, which seem to route into nowhere for me, and sometimes I'm getting 213.120.161.X addresses, which work fine.
For reference, my WAN IP is 86.137.32.X, gateway is 217.47.13.186.
Don't suppose there are any hugely knowledgable BT folks passing who can tell which CDN servers I should be seeing, and can say why I seem to be flip-flopping between one set I can see and one I can't?
Cheers

  • Font issues...only noticing issues on certain websites

This could end up being a Safari issue but I am posting here because I am noticing the problem after I upgraded to Leopard.
Whenever I go to certain websites, instant messenger chats, various video players i.e. Comcast Fan, You Tube, etc. I can barely read the font. I am only noticing this on the items I just listed. I was chatting with a friend in instant messenger and I could barely understand what they were writing because of the font.
At first I thought it was a Comcast Cable internet thing but I am noticing it more and more on other sites. It's the same font too.
So I am trying to see how I can make it a font that I can clearly read and understand.
In the Safari preferences, I selected APPEARANCES to see if I could change anything there. This is what I have it set as currently:
Standard Font = Times New Roman 16
    Fixed Font = Courier 13
Default Encoding = Western (ISO Latin 1)
    Thanks

    Baltwo,
Its not necessarily the size thats the problem its the actual font. It almost looks like Graffiti which is hard to read. I am only seeing this on my desktop. I also have a Macbook pro laptop and everything on those sites I listed looks perfect. I do NOT have leopard on my MBP.

  • I want to put a Firefox link in a Freeware section of my website, is there any legal issue?

    Godd afternoon,
I have a comapny website and we are making a freeware software section.
I want to put a Firefox link there (http://www.cloudinfo.pt), is there any legal issue?
Can I host the package or just insert the link?
    Thanks.
    Fernando

hello Fernando, there shouldn't be any issue with that, but for details please refer to Mozilla's trademark policy at https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/foundation/trademarks/policy/ - especially the part about software distribution & linking.

  • Is there a way to block certain websites from my computer?

A website keeps saying "This website is a threat to your computer" or something like that when I go to certain websites. I scanned my computer with McAfee and it said that the website posting that was a hazard to my computer. I can't find any antivirus software (for free) to download to my computer that works (my computer says there's an error when downloading) and when I looked at the page again it had something that said "..I.. " in it and the I was lowercase so i figured that an official page would at least have all that kind of stuff capitalized.
I just want to know how to block this website (or get a link to an antivirus download, for free, that actually works).
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I went to get on a website

Really no need to install anything to block websites, you can use the HOSTS file that is in every Operating System.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HOSTS
Just a matter of locating the HOSTS file and learning a little bit about how to add a domain or IP address you want to block to that file.

  • Why can't I access certain websites, such as google or facebook, in any browser?

This started last night, and it is strange. I am unable to access a few websites, such as Google, Facebook, and the sign in page for my google account.  I have tried Firefox, Chrome, and Safari all with pretty much the same results. I have reset the original settings in these browsers, cleared my caches and browsing data, ran the disk utilities and permissions check. And still the same results.
Two particularly peculiar things have been occuring.
In youtube, I am unable to sign into my account in two of the browsers, and in Chrome I am already logged in but the autoplay of my watch later playlist acts very odd. one the main skeleton of the website is loaded It will show the red bar of the video loading across the top, then instead of playing the video, it skips to the next one. It will continue down the playlist without playing any video whatsoever and marks the videos as 'watched' afterwards. I can still use Yahoo search with no problems.
Here is the really odd thing. When I tried to load youtube in Safari, which I almost never use, it sat and spun waiting for the website then in the end it took me to a 'get google chrome webpage;' this was the same in Firefox (see attached images). Note: the navigation urls are facebook.com and youtube.com, but the favicon shows the chrome icon and my homepage is not set on this. I also included the network traffic overview to show how 47 servers are being accessed via Safari with only three tabs, none of which have loaded. And Chrome is not my default browser.
Also, I have a network montitor that I watch during this and it is very busy going to many different websites accessing over 50 different servers. These are websites which some I recognize, such as chat.facebook.com, and some webservers that I don't recognize. But I don't have any of these open in any tabs and hadn't tried to get on these sites  for days.
Two things which may have contributed to these anomolies:
I updated to OS X 10.9.2. It was downloaded two nights ago, and I told it to restart the computer in an hour as I went to sleep. I assumed that it was already installed, but when I opened the AppStore today, it still had to go through the install restart process. Since this update invovled changing how website certificates are handled, maybe my downloading without doing the proper restart install caused something weird to occur. It is true that all of the affected websites do use an https: SSL address.  But if this is the case then why wasn't this issue fixed when I finally did a correct installation. And why is there so much traffic to websites on the browser activity that have nothing to do with the open websites in the browser.
The final thing is that I read about how Adobe Cloud accounts, over a few million, were recently stolen. When I was researching this I found a link that was supposed to show me if my account had been one of the compromised ones. I went to the website, http://www.geek.com/apps/how-to-check-if-your-adobe-account-was-hacked-1576194/ which led me to the website  http://adobe.cynic.al/, and ( stupidly) entered my account email to search if it was on the list, only to realize after that this was not a legit adobe webpage. If memory serves me correct, the problems going to webisites was worse after I did this.
So, I thought I would bring this to peoples attention. I am now going to do the only thing left I can think of to try and repair this so I can watch my youtube newsclips and google searches again, and that is to do a complete reinstall of Mavericks and then a migration from my backup afterwards, Unless someone had a better idea. BTW I did go through all of my main accounts to websites, using a different computer, and changed all of my passwords.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test will take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

  • TS1398 Just got the mini, specifically to get jobs on a certain website. Jobs change all the time. When I go to website, it has not updated from the first time I logged in on the mini. It works on my laptop just fine. HELP!

My sons just bought me an ipad mini especially so that I could check a certain website on which I sign up for jobs throughout the day.  The website is updated constantly throughout the day with new jobs and the status of the jobs I already have accepted and worked on. (It shows the percentage of the job that has been done.)  It worked fine only the first time I logged on with the mini.  Since then (yesterday,) when I check the website, it lets me log in, but I only see the same exact information that was there the first time I went to the website using the mini.  It seems to be 'frozen' on that particular first look.  It doesn't update at all.
I know it is not updating because I have also been checking with my notebook computer and with the notebook, the website is up to date.
    Maybe its Safari?
I had the same problem when I used a friend's iPad.
I wonder if there is a setting or something that I could change to allow the website to update to the time I check it.
If not, then the ipad mini is a terrible disappointment and I would like to return it.
If you can help me, I would be extremely grateful.
    Thanks in advance...

  • Are certain websites simply not mac compatible?

I have had a mac for the last 4-5 years and have had only one issue in the past, which turned out to be easy to fix. However a new one is starting to crop up in that I have found that certain websites are windows and IE only. Is there a way around this? This has only occurred to me on three sites, unfortunately two of them happen to be pretty important. I would like to stay away from windows and IE as much as possible, nor do i wish to put either on my mac.

    HI,
From the Apple Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Advanced tab. At the bottom of that window click: Show Develope menu in menu bar.
Now from the Safari Menu Bar click Developer/User Agent. Try one of the options there. This function only applies to sites for IE only.
Microsoft stopped writing IE for the Mac years ago. In order to run IE you would have to install Windows with BootCamp that creates a partition on the startup disk and install anti virus software on that partition.

  • Certain websites are not resonsive on my Macbook pro!

So I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro. And I'm almost positive that this is an issue with the machine and not the internet. But whenever I go to certain websites (Pandora and You Tube) none of the navigational buttons are responsive! I try choosing other stations, or pausing video on You Tube and NOTHING happens. Like the sites are not letting me do anything!
Can anyone help me out here?? I'm thinking that it may be some kind of technical SOMETHING in my machine that's making it act buggy..... Thanks for your help

    Hi Dj Cj,
It most definitely sounds like something with the browser. With that being said... what browser are you using? What version of the browser? If you're using Safari, what if you try FireFox? If you're using FireFox what if you try Safari? How about a new user account... does the issue persist there as well?

  • Certain websites crash when I open them

I am so frustrated.   I kept going to certain websites( Goodreads for example) and safari closes the minute they open.  I took my iPad to the Mac store and they said there was a software issue and replaced it for free since it was still under warranty.  Have my new iPad, and same websites still crash.   I don't get an error message, they just shut down the minute they are fully opened.
What is going on.  I've done a restore like 3 times on my previous iPad.  This one is brand new.   What is going on.  I'm so frustrated!

To clarify, this is on an IPAD.
And its brand spanking new... so I havn't been using safari much.    It did this on my old Ipad AND the new one.   SimplyMac store said it was a software issue and replaced it.  But the new one does the same thing!
I have no clue how to use another broweser on my Ipad.     the websites that are crashing are ones that worked perfectly fine a few months ago.   I had no problems at all when I got my first Ipad.

  • Activity icon always running on certain websites

When viewing certain websites in Safari (such as AllThingsD) the Activiy icon is always spinning. If I switch to another tab, the icon will disappear after a few seconds, but will return as soon as I switch back to the offending websites. Is there some kind of information being constantly pulled from my ipad? Why do only certain websites cause this? I'm concerned about what the sites are doing and how it affects my battery drain, since the activity is continuous.
    Thanks in advance :-)

Appears there's another thread on this issue.  Search for the thread "Iphone 5s Network activity icon always on" for discussion.

  • Cannot Access Certain Websites from MBP

I've tried setting DNS to 8.8.8.8 as well as connecting via Ethernet as well as with my wireless broadband dongle, and still no luck. In fact, when I connect my dongle my internet connection goes even worse and I can hardly load any websites at all!
It's just certain websites in particular that won't load, however they load fine on other devices (e.g. my iPhone) even when they're connected to the same network.
Also I've tried removing my 'Wi-Fi' location under Sys Prefs and adding it again.
I can access all my usual sites with no issues (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc, all the big ones) it's just the occasional small scale website. I'm a web designer you see and it keeps happening on websites that I am working on.
And before you ask, these websites have all been hosted on different servers, it's happened on a total of 3 so far. All within the last couple of weeks.
I've noticed tonight that this particular client's 3 websites are all hosted on the same server as he has a reseller account and I can't load any of them on my MBP. However other devices load them fine and my MBP can still load other websites.
I've also tested by loading the websites in Adobe Browserlab and they load fine through that.
Also I've tried rebooting my router and the other thing I use to make the network 'wireless' (I forget what it's called, I'm not the hardware type as I'm sure you've guessed).
It's as if there's something about these websites that my MBP really doesn't like. However that's not to say it NEVER loads them, the problem seems intermittent.
I was loading this client's websites fine tonight right up until about an hour ago when they just seemed to cut out altogether. But as I say, other devices load them fine.
Any ideas what I can do to fix it? This is very annoying as it is preventing me from simply doing my job.

I found the soluion after more googling here.

  • Web browsers cannot load certain websites.

There are certain websites I am never able to access from my computer.  I've tried to access these sites using Safari (5.1), Firefox, and Google Chrome, and I always get a message stating (at least in Safari) "Safari can't open the page xxxxx.com because the server where this page is located isn't responding."  My girlfriend runs off of the same Airport as I do, and I can access these sites from her computer.  Any idea what's wrong with my computer, since it doesn't appear to be either a browser or ISP issue?
    Thanks!
    Nick

  • Safari won't open certain websites

I am sorry if this already has a thread but I couldn't find it. My question is whether anyone can give me some advice about how to get over the problem of safari not opening certain websites. I have followed Apple's suggestion's to add "index/html" following the address but it does not work. They also suggest to contact each websites adminstrator which I don't have the time as there are a number of websites in which I have encountered this problem. Also, it seems to be a deficiency of the Safari rather than the other websites. How do I get over this obestacle? TX!

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I just experienced something very strange.
First of all, I installed Leopard 36 hours ago, and except for a small email issue, it's been great. Until this...
I was on my own website, when it suddenly said it couldn't open my page because it couldn't find the server. I checked with my host, and everything was fine. I tried going there with an old version of IE, and I got right on. Tried again with Safari, and no dice. I studied the addresses to see if anything was different, and noticed that in IE, there was no "www." in the address. So, I deleted the www from the address in Safari, and it found the website. However, all the images were X's because their address starts with a www.
This lasted about 10 minutes, and then everything was fine. During that time, other websites seemed to work fine.
My head is starting to hurt again.
