IsCellEditable

I'm using a DefaultTableModel for the JTable. I want to disable editing for all the rows in column 0. Is it possible.
Also how do I set the cellediting to false for a defaultTableModel .

  • TreeCellEditor and isCellEditable method

    I'm confused about how to handle tree cell edits. See the example program below. As you click around the tree, note that the isCellEditable method is called on the cell you are leaving, and not on the cell you are going to. This causes the cell you are going to to be rendered with the editor of the cell you are coming from. There is something I'm missing. What is it?
    What I thought would happen:
    1) isCellEditable called on cell you are going to
    2) if isCellEditable returns true, the editor is used to render the cell, otherwise the renderer is used.
    What is happening:
    1) isCellEditable called on the cell you are coming from. (perhaps this test is done to see if valueForPathChanged should be called on the model?)
    2) ????
    Example code:
    public class TestTreeCellEditor extends AbstractCellEditor implements TreeCellEditor {
         private JLabel label = new JLabel();
         @Override
         public Component getTreeCellEditorComponent(JTree tree, Object value,
                   boolean isSelected, boolean expanded, boolean leaf, int row) {
              label.setText(((DefaultMutableTreeNode) value).getUserObject().toString());
              return label;
         @Override
         public Object getCellEditorValue() {
              return label.getText();
         @Override
         public boolean isCellEditable(EventObject e) {
              TreePath path = ((JTree) e.getSource()).getSelectionPath();
              if (path != null) {
                   DefaultMutableTreeNode node = (DefaultMutableTreeNode) path.getLastPathComponent();
                   String nodeText = node.getUserObject().toString();
                   System.out.println("Testing node with text \"" + nodeText + "\"");
                   return nodeText.indexOf("NOT") < 0;
              return false;
    public class TestTreeEditBehavior {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                   public void run() {
                        launchUI();
         private static void launchUI() {
              JFrame frame = new JFrame("Test Tree Edit Behavior");
              DefaultMutableTreeNode root = new DefaultMutableTreeNode("NOT Editable");
              root.add(new DefaultMutableTreeNode("I'm editable."));
              root.add(new DefaultMutableTreeNode("Me too!  I can be edited."));
              DefaultTreeModel model = new DefaultTreeModel(root);
              JTree tree = new JTree(model);
              tree.setCellEditor(new TestTreeCellEditor());
              tree.setEditable(true);
              JPanel panel = new JPanel();
              panel.add(tree);
              frame.setContentPane(panel);
              frame.pack();
              frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
              frame.setVisible(true);
    }What I expect to happen and what actually happens are obviously not the same. What am I supposed to be doing?

    Okay...here is how it looks to me:
    What happens when you need to write your own custom TreeCellEditor?
    TreeCellEditor requires the following methods:
        public abstract Component getTreeCellEditorComponent(JTree jtree, Object obj, boolean flag, boolean flag1, boolean flag2, int i);
        public abstract Object getCellEditorValue();
        public abstract boolean isCellEditable(EventObject eventobject);
        public abstract boolean shouldSelectCell(EventObject eventobject);
        public abstract boolean stopCellEditing();
        public abstract void cancelCellEditing();
        public abstract void addCellEditorListener(CellEditorListener celleditorlistener);
        public abstract void removeCellEditorListener(CellEditorListener celleditorlistener);However, you can probably get away with AbstractCellEditor handling most of the work. With AbstractCellEditor extended, you then only need to implement two methods:
        public abstract Component getTreeCellEditorComponent(JTree jtree, Object obj, boolean flag, boolean flag1, boolean flag2, int i);
        public abstract Object getCellEditorValue();However, you may still want to override some of the methods AbstractCellEditor handles for you. For example, AbstractCellEditor always returns true from the isCellEditable method. If you cells are not always editable, you will want to override this method.
    You will note, however, using AbstractCellEditor you lose certain things provided by the DefaultTreeCellEditor. For example, fields are edited automatically on selection (if editable) rather than using the more complex behavior of the DefaultTreeCellEditor (triple-click or click-pause-click), and icons for the tree will be missing. You can reimplement this behavior on your own, but there is a potentially better approach. One of the DefaultTreeCellEditor constructors takes a TreeCellEditor as an argument. Pass your custom TreeCellEditor to this constructor, and you get the DefaultTreeCellEditor behaviors back (assuming you didn't already override them).
    More about isCellEditable
    When you ask whether or not a cell is editable, you are really asking two questions:
    1) Is the cell editable?
    2) Should the editor be activated given the user actions? (e.g. double-click, triple-click, etc)
    Your cell editor should answer question 1 (AbstractCellEditor always returns true). The DefaultTreeCellEditor answers question 2. If you do not use the DefaultTreeCellEditor, then you should also answer question 2.
    An odd happenstance of the DefaultTreeCellEditor is it's click-pause-click behavior to activate the editor. When this happens, the second click causes isCellEditable to be called again with a null EventObject (at least with Java 1.6.0_20-b02). If we assume this is the only time the EventObject will be null, you should probably just return true when the EventObject is null. Unless you wanted to specifically disable the click-pause-click behavior, in which case you could return false. But either way, make sure you check the EventObject for a null value.

  • AbstractTableModel.isCellEditable() vs. copy/paste operations

    Say I have a JTable with 2 columns (strings), the 1st with a default cell renderer, and the 2nd one with a renderer extended from JPasswordField. So far so good. But I don't want the 1st column to be editable. So I modify the model to return false for isCellEditable(r,c) for that column.
    What I am finding is that making a cell non-editable also renders it immune to copy/paste operations. I want to be able to select/copy the non-editable cell and value, and paste it into the 2nd column (via Ctrl-c/Ctrl-v). The copy operation only appears to work if isCellEditable() is true. ..
    I fooled around with a TableCellEditor to try to make an "editable" cell that would allow selection/copy without actually allowing a value change, but couldn't get it to work.
    What am I missing?

    Something like this should work
    Label l = new Label (...);
    l.addKeyListener (new KeyAdapter() {
    public void keyTyped (KeyEvent ke) {
    if (ke.getModifiers()&KeyEvent.CTRL_DOWN_MASK!=0) {
    if (ke.getKeyChar()=='c') ...

  • IsCellEditable() to disable cell editing for specific columns

    Hello experts:
    My SSCCE for this question is at the below link:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5293914&messageID=10244030#10244030
    My question is how do I disable cell editing for all but the "Price" column of my table in the SSCCE. I tried adding the below lines of code right after creating the JTable. But get compilation errors.
    //Here is the block of code that I am trying to include.
         @Override
         public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int col) {
         if (col == 7) {
                   return true;
              } else {
                   return false;
         } //Below is the method in detail03.java showing the block of code added
    private JScrollPane BuildEmptyTable() {
         model = new DefaultTableModel();
         model.addTableModelListener( this );
         model.setColumnIdentifiers(new String[] { "SKU","Qty", "Price"});
            tblDetailTest = new JTable(model);
         @Override
         public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int col) {     //     <----- I tried placing the
         if (col == 7) {                                        //                  the code block here
                   return true;
              } else {
                   return false;
         tblDetailTest.setRowHeight(20);
         tblDetailTest.setPreferredScrollableViewportSize(new Dimension(900, 100));
         JTableHeader tblHdr = tblDetailTest.getTableHeader();
         tblHdr.setBackground(Color.yellow);
         JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(tblDetailTest);
         return scrollPane;
    }Can somebody please guide me? Thank you very much.

    oops!
    Sorry, my bad! I did not tell you what I tried. Following your suggestion, I made the following 2 changes to the code:
    In the method, BuildEmptyTable(), where I build the table structure, I have the following statement:
         tblDetail = new JTable(model){
    public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int col) {
           return col == 8;
    };And in a separate method after the table is populated with data, I have the below code:
         tblDetail.getModel().addTableModelListener(new TableModelListener() {
         public void tableChanged(TableModelEvent e) {
         if (e.getType() == TableModelEvent.UPDATE)
              int row = e.getFirstRow();
              int column = e.getColumn();
                 if (column == 8){
                   //code here
                   System.out.println("Updating item price!");
         }I do understand that the message gets displayed as many number of times equal to number of rows inserted into the table, because of the UPDATE event. But my problem is I do not know how to make a code change to do what I exactly want, as I have indicated in my previous note. Meaning I want the listener to be called only when the
    data in the editable cell changes.
    Thank You.

  • JTable isCellEditable (TRUE) BUT the table returns the previuos result

    Guys,
    Quick question: I learned that a jtable can be aditable if you do use
    public boolean isCellEditable
    my table consist of Guests (id, name, and comment) say the user wants to revise the comment (I set it as editable) he may do that BUT why does the returned result gets me back to the previous info (the inital comment)?
         public boolean isCellEditable(int rowIndex, int columnIndex)
              if (columnIndex==2)  //only this is editable
                   String value = (String) getValueAt(rowIndex, columnIndex);
                   Guest g = (Guest) model.elementAt(rowIndex);
                   g.setName(value);
                   return true;
              else
                   return false;
         }I guess I should take the cell's content, but how can I do that if my table is under:
    public class GuestTable extends AbstractTableModel
       //class here
    }so, how can I change the content cell and SET the value in guest?
    thanks

    Don't really understand what you are doing. But if you want to make column 2 editable then you just do:
    public boolean isCellEditable(int rowIndex, int columnIndex)
         return columnIndex==2;
    }If you want to save the changed value then you need to inplement the setValueAt(...) method in your GuestTableModel.

  • Cant get current node from TreeCellEditor isCellEditable().

    I have a custom TreeCellEditor but I do not want to allow the user to edit the root node.
    I was hoping to use isCellEditable() but I can not seem to get the node that is being edited from the EventObject.
    I can get the JTree, (from event.getSource(), but there is no way to get the node that is being tested. I have tried using:
    tree.getEditingPath()
    tree.getLastPathComponent()
    tree.getSelectionPath()But they all return null at the time isCellEditable() is called.
    Does anyone know of a way to get the node that is being tested?
    Thanks,
    Jerome.

    well, that method is meant to be generic such that it decides if editing is possible for the type of event.
    JTable has a separate isCellEditable method, but so does TableModel, so typically, you have a custom table model that implements the method there to return, and in that you know what cell.
    For JTree, I don't know why there's no similar method in the TreeModel interface. There is in JTree, but I really think that should be a function of the model, not the view.
    For JTable, I believe it's only there as a pass-thru, calling the table model's method underneath to get the value.

  • Although isCellEditable with tablemodel the cell is still editable - why?

    I want a table where no cells are editable.
    My tablemodel extends AbstractTableModel.
    I've seen that isCellEditable() is the right method to provide this.
    But even if I implement it, the cells are still editable. Why?
    Here are some code snippets - and I hope this is enough to provide a rough information:
    public class Main extends JFrame {
    private DefaultTableModel playerModel = new DefaultTableModel();
    static public void main(String args[]) {
    private void preparePlayerTable() {
    jtbPlayers.setModel(playerModel);
    Players players = new Players();
    playerColumns = players.getColumnNames(); //Spaltennamen holen
    playerModel.setColumnIdentifiers(playerColumns);
    public class Players extends AbstractTableModel() {
    public Players() {
    public boolean isCellEditable (int row, int column) {
    return false;
    One of my questions is: when is isCellEditable been called??
    I've seen examples where this method has been implemented without a call.
    (eg. Java Online Tutorial - ../uiswing/components/table.html)
    Is it really enough to implement it or do I have to explicitely call it?
    I don't get this. Maybe someone who knows can help me, thank you.
    Nick

    Your table model is a DefaultTableModel:private DefaultTableModel playerModel = new DefaultTableModel();
    // code skipped here
    jtbPlayers.setModel(playerModel);Just writing a class Players that would prevent editing is not enough, you actually have to use an instance of it as the table model of your JTable.

  • Calculating and displaying the Length of the side of a triangle

    Hi everyone. I am currently working on Dragging and Stretching a triangle on screen. Ive got it working to a certain extent but the only problem is that whenever I go to the point from which i have to drag my triangle i.e. the Left hand Corner of the BAse at exactly 300,300 it redraws a new triangle below the existing one and then when i stretch it from the top and the right it leaves a trail of triangles everytime. But when i resize my window it clears the trail only to start agian when I drag or stretch it...
    All my code for wahtever I have done is displayed below. I would appreciate all the help that any one can offer.
    Secondly , as I stretch my triangle I would like to calculate My Length of the hypotenuse and the other 2 sides as they change and display it in System.out.println for now...
    PLEASE HELP

    Hey sorry mate.. ive got a nother problem.
    I need to add loads of theorems to this tool. so i need a JMenu Bar called File with all the normal things. then another Menu called Theorems where i can have a list of JMenuItems with the theorem names --- Like when they click on Pythagoras Theorem it opens up all the triangle and the traingle data that u helped me with.
    The thing is im using netbeans and in netbeans i can do it coz its there and all you got to do is put the components together.
    Please Help
    Thanks...

  • URGENT HELP REQUIRED _ Creating Labels for Triangle

    Hi everyone... the code below is my application - Pythagoras Theorem.. or rather displaying it.. But i have not been able to get the Vertex of the triangle Labelled as A B C... I need to do that and change the Triangle Table data to A B C insted of Horizontal Vertical and Hypotenuise and as the triangle is stretched on screen A B And C keep moving as well ...
    Besides i need to Show this in the tabel
    - Values of A ^ 2 , B^2 and C ^2 as welll as a row showing A^2+B^2 = C^2
    the code is as follows..

    Sharan,
    The code given was part of the assignment and you are supposed to make the changes for your part right?
    Please give details of what you have done so far and not expect us to do your assignment for you. We'll be glad to help answer questions and point to the right direction, but giving us the entire assignment and saying, very nicely I might add, "Please do it for me." Just seems to make a mockery of the hours, days, and years that many of us has spent earning our degrees and learning our skills.
    Work on it and ask specific questions with examples of what you have done and you'll get a much better response.

  • How can i update data in JTable at run time ?

    i am trying to build a client/server architecture for conducting quizzes & online tests.. My client will return a object to the server after the test is over, which contains details about the participant, his score and other details. i am putting the incoming object to an Vector. I'll create a new thread each time for the incoming connection and insert the object to the Vector.. Now, please tell me tat, how can i update my table automatically at run time so tat, my table is updated whenever a new object is entered into vector..
    here is my code for the table..
    public class MyTableModel extends AbstractTableModel {
        String columNames[] = { "ID", "NAME", "COLLEGE", "SCORE", "CELL" };
        /** Creates a new instance of MyTableModel */
        public MyTableModel() {
            Main.List = new Vector();
            SetDefaultData();
        public int getRowCount() {
            return Main.List == null ? 0 : Main.List.size();
        public int getColumnCount() {
            return columNames.length;
        public String getColumnName(int column) {
            return columNames[column];
        public boolean isCellEditable(int row,int col) {
            return false;

            if(rowindex < 0 || rowindex >= getRowCount())
                return "";
            Student row = (Student)Main.List.elementAt(rowindex);
            switch (columnindex)
                case 0 : return row.id;
                case 1 : return row.name;
                case 2 : return row.college;
                case 3 : return row.score;
                case 4 : return row.cell;
            return "";
        public String getTitle() {
            return "Student Table";
        private void SetDefaultData() {
            Main.List.removeAllElements();
            Main.List.addElement(new Student("CS041","Keerthivasan M","MNM",95,"9884326321"));
            Main.List.addElement(new Student("CS012","Arun M","MNM",90,"9884825780"));

    In the future Swing related questions should be posted in the Swing forum.
    how can i update my table automatically at run time so tat, my table is
    updated whenever a new object is entered into vector..You don't update the Vector directly. You should be creating a method in your TableModel, called "addRow(...)". This method will do two things:
    a) add the Student object to the Vector
    b) invoke the fireTableRowsInserted(..) method of AbstractTableModel. This will cause the table to be repainted.

  • At a total loss with this code...

    So i'm working on this applet for work and im lost. in the end, this will be a cash register type app thats integrated with our web database. as of right now, the code to download an html page works fine when run by itself, independent of the main class. but when the download PageDownload class is called from the sales class (the main class), i get this error:
    register/sales.java [245:1] unreported exception java.lang.Exception; must be caught or declared to be thrown
    pagey.main(null);
    what's my problem?

    Your PageDownload code has no non-static code other than the blank class instantiator. You shouldn't be calling a static method from an instance of the class. You could just as easily say:
    PageDownload.main(null);
    instead of:
    PageDownload pagey = new PageDownload();
    pagey.main(null);
    the PageDownload class needs no instance since it has no object code of any value.
    Re-think the design a bit, the pattern looks bad.
    If your intention for the PageDownload class was to create a singleton then search the tutorials for the proper way to construct singletons, also decide wether or not you need this class to be a singleton.
    Also output some of the error information to help diagnose what exactly is wrong with the URL, ie, try to output the URL, maybe it's blank

  • Use ComboBox TableCellEditor  - values are not saved to the table model

    Hi,
    I got a combobox cell editor that uses to edit one of the columns.
    And i got an ok button that uses to collect the data from the table and save it to the db.
    In case i started editing of a cell and the editor is still displayed- if i will click on the button the data that will be colected from the table model will not contained the updated value in the cell editor.
    In this case the user think his changes were saved but the last updated field is not updated.
    Is this a bug i got in the cell editor or this is the normal behaviour?
    Can it be fixed? (So that if the cell is in the middle of editing the value that will be saved is the last value that was selected).

    There are too many mistakes in your program. It looks like you are new to java.
    Your add and delete row buttons are not working because you haven't registered your action listener with these buttons.
    I have modifide your code and now it works fine. Just put some validation code for the textboxes becuase it throws exception when user presses add button without entering anything.
    Here is the updated code: Do the diff and u will know my changes
