Issue with Gnome 2.24 in Arch x86_64

Hi:
I write here because i have a little problem with the last update of gnome from core repos. I installed it and everything seems to work fine, but there is a minor issue with a black square in the place where a description of something appears when you hold the mouse cursor over an icon.
I leave an image for you to see what i see:
Does anybody have a solution for this or should i wait for the next update of gnome??
Thanks!
Note: In the picture i'm using compiz fusion, but i tried with metacity and the same happens.

Just on this  same sorta line, is anyone having issues with themes not working correctly anymore?. I get an error saying this theme might not work correctly  because the engine isnt installed, but the engines are?

  • Issue with Gnome 3.12 login and MOTD

    Hello,
This may be trivial, but I've struggled to find an answer for a problem I now have following creating an motd. I wanted an motd especially for terminal / ssh logins, but had no idea Gnome would attempt (I believe it does anyway) to display the motd contents immediately after logging in.
Whilst this would not be an issue if it actually worked and displayed the motd rather than garbage (see image below). It makes my login time much longer as it hangs on the login screen, before finally reaching the desktop. If I blank the motd, this problem goes away, however, as said, I really want the motd for ssh and terminal use. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a way to disable Gnome from reading this file, or to display it correctly and not hamper my login times?
I'm running Arch x86_64 with Gnome 3.12 and would appreciate any time and help on this.

  • Having issues with gnome keyring

So ever since I did a system update (-Syu) I have been having issues with my gnome keyring.
Before I would use GDM and when I would go to type in my password the first time it would 'hang' and not respond, I would have to hit cancel and re-type in my password. If I would close my laptop lid and open it again, every time I would type in my password jt would just sit there and not respond and then I would have to reboot and go through the process again, first time doesn't work, second time it logs in, can't close laptop lid.
So I go tired of dealing with that and got rid of GDM and just made a bash script to load X on login from tty1. This works great, just one minor annoyance. Once I log in I get this window http://imgur.com/Slj1V1d except when I try to type in the password, no matter how many tires I take, it still just hangs and sits there. I can hit cancel and go about my merry way, but its always on the back of my mind and its pretty irking. Something that I know is broken that I have to deal with everytime I use my computer can be bothersome.
Would anyone know how I could either remove (from what I heard this wouldn't be good because gnome relies on the keyring for programs) the keyring, or delete the data with the keyring so that I could get a fresh start. I've tried seahorse, but it does the same thing as i've stated above.
    Thank you for any help!

Edit: Made sure it was formulated as a joke...
And thanks to you too Rexilion, the grep made it easy to track what was missing to re-install.
Even though I got my baby all patched up and working, I still have that damn pesky keyring issue with GDM. So even deleting every thing in that directory, and re-installing the packages, it didn't fix the issue

  • Arch live CD with gnome

Well charka looks interesting but to be honest KDE make me seriously reconsider pros/cons of living vs Dieing. I don't know why but I just cant stand it using it as my main DE. So its there a similar project with gnome? Also charka seems a little bloated , I was thinking of one with Arch + KDE and thats it. But whatever.
EDIT: Sorry I was talking about an Arch live cd with gnome charka is an arch based distro with a kde desktop. I was talking about a arch based distro with a gnome desktop.
Last edited by generic_ (2009-01-25 20:11:09)

This «Charka» intrigues me, where did you find out about it?
Also, detailed memory analysis¹ at our Chakra World Domination Headquarters have shown that a comparable Gnome setup can consume several magnitudes more memory and bloat, while featuring only an infitesimal amount of the features, of a Kde Desktop Environment.
I am currently unaware of any efforts to squeeze a gnome onto a CD-platter, but I'm sure you could do it on a couple of DVD's and some effort. Writing a usable installer using GTK is a whole other story (good luck finding good and up to date tutorials and documentation!).
¹: For a discussion of a methodology, please see: http://ktown.kde.org/~seli/memory/analysis.html
(DISCLAIMER: No, I haven't done any real testing, and noone has done any lately that I know of (but KDE won last round), but my personal experiences confirm it. If anyone seriously want to make a Charka, featuring Gnome and Arch and a pretty installer, get in touch, as our installation backend should be easily shared between installers, no matter what desktop or toolkit you write it for/use. I'm serious about the lack of good documentation for GTK, though.)

  • Multiple issues with new installation

I have several issues with my fresh installation of arch (just got myself a free old-as laptop , thus trying out arch for the first time as I usually run gentoo), and I'm not sure where these should go. I figure that I may as well lump them all at once while I'm at it.
The laptop model is a Toshiba Dynabook TX/430DX Japanese laptop similar to a Tecra A2 afaik.
    1. If I use stock ARCH kernel, when I load up x11 it seems to be using some wrong drivers or something. Tried with and without xorg.conf. The screen is all fuzzy etc. However, I compiled my own kernel (the Zen sources), took out a whole bunch of drivers I knew I wouldn't be using (etc. SATA/IDE/extra whatnot so that it would merely take 3 hours to compile the kernel), x11 works fine. HOWEVER with the zen sources, when I close x11 I can't exit to console. I get some sort of weird artefact from what happened to be on the screen, or it just goes black. It does actually seem to be in console as I can turn off the laptop with ctrl.alt.del and the capslock etc seems to work fine. I'm thinking of recompiling the zen sources with the stock arch kernel config when I have the time just to see what happens, but I'm not too sure it'd help.
The VGA device is an: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Intergrated Graphics Device (rev 02), using the intelfb module.
    2. In most consoles I've used, if you type in part of a command then press ctrl.up/down, it autocompletes with previous commands you've run matching what you've already entered. However, in my install it brings me to the very first command in my bash history. How do I make it autocomplete previous commands?
    3. When I use wvdial (I have a mobile modem), I get odd characters as shown in the screenshot posted.
I don't think it's a unicode issue, as ncmpcpp displays properly. This displays itself both in the console and in x11 (screenshot).
    4. If I'm using the stock kernel and I stop wvdial, I get a whole bunch of kernel error trace messages. After this, anything that goes to dmesg will be displayed to whatever terminal I'm on (but not actually echoed, it gets overwritten if I change screen etc). Wvdial is also prone to crashing, sometimes taking out the whole laptop. However, while using the zen kernel I do not suffer this issue at all.
Any help in helping me find the source of these issues would be greatly appreciated. They're not showstopping issues, but extremely irritating nonetheless.
    Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I created a zen kernel based on the arch stock kernel. Unsurprisingly, I still suffer from the x11 video issue. However, I don't have issues with number 4.

  • Network browsing with Gnome

    rant mode = on
Ok, Novell says that it wants to default with Gnome...
I like to follow Novells lead, but this is getting a bit troubling,
I was totally happy with KDE and got to know it quite easily. But....
The Gnome is such a pretty simple thing and nice to use and will make a
    great Business class desktop unless:
    1) you are a sophisticated power user with unusuall needs
    2) you are a Netware administrator and want to assign file rights to
network folders or files with novell file attributes
    3) You want to configure your menu's to make life easier
for you to do your job
    4) You want to browse unmapped NSS based file systems
this is why I'm posting, I can't figure out what exactly the
Nautilus plugin for NCL actually does. It seems that there is no way to
browse, I tried "network servers" in the internet section. I tried using
nnetscannds:/ or nnetscannwsrv:/ all to no avail.
Am I crazy or is the Gnome a little daft?
    Did I install something wroong?
I have double checked and reintstalled the client with both red-carpet and
    the bash script.
at this rate it will be NLD version 12 before I actually use this at work!
and it's supposed to be a business class system.

When I was using Gnome I just created a link to Konq and used that for my
netware file browsing and it worked fine. I even used a custom icon for it
that was a little screen with a red N in the middle of it...I eventually
moved over to KDE though after having numerous issues with gnome weirdness
with gnome-panels and the gnome-keyring. I got so frustrated one day after
making just a couple minor modifications to my desktop that I logged into
KDE and I haven't been back to gnome since...that was like 3 months ago.
Prior to that I had been using Gnome exclusively for years (since redhat 7
days) It cracks me up that Novell makes this big press announcement about
standardizing on Gnome but their client is sooo much better intergrated
with KDE. I don't get it either.

  • Issues with XFCE 4 Trash Networking and Automounting

Hello all. I'm have a rather strange issue with my new install of Arch with xfce. No matter what I try I cant seem to get Trash, automounting, or network browsing to work in xfce. While in my normal account all of these refuse to work, no trash icon, no response to usb drives and optical disks, no local computers visible in thunar. However when I login as root everything works fine. So I changed my user groups, installed gvfs and messed with my scripts but still no joy. Anyone have any idea what I could be missing?
    My Groups
lp wheel games network video audio optical storage scanner camera power users networkmanager
Oh I forgot to mention, I do have thunar-volman installed and setup as well.
Many thanks to anyone who could know what I'm doing wrong.

    I had almost the same problem until I did this;
first, make sure that you have dbus installed
then, in your ~/.xinitrc file, you should have a line that looks like this:
    exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
add "dbus-launch" right before startxfce4 on that line so that it looks like this:
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4
That solved my problem, hope it does for you as well.

  • Incomplete logout with Gnome/systemd

    Hey,
I'm using Gnome 3.6 from the testing repositories. That is because with the current stable version (3.4) custom shortcuts and media keys do not work on my system. But I don't think the version of Gnome does matter, since I experienced the same issue with Gnome 3.4. Also, I'm using systemd, the OS is only installed for a week now.
When I log off (via the Gnome menu) and get to the login screen, I cannot shutdown or restart the system without providing root authentication. My root user doesn't have a password since I'm using sudo, so I have to login again and use shutdown/restart from the menu.
The authentication dialog tells me, I need to authenticate to shutdown while there are still users logged in. However, no one else should be logged in, since I'm using the PC alone. So there really is no reason to ask for authentication. If I log in via terminal, the following users are on the system:
    $ who
    (unknown) :1 2012-10-25 18:02 (:1)
    joker tty2 2012-10-25 18:05
    $ users
    (unknown) joker
joker is my local user which I logged in as on the terminal. As I understand, (unknown) is the gdm instance. So everything seems to be right. Still, Gnome wants me to authenticate after I logged out of the terminal session again.
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30529 seems to fit my problem, but killing pulseaudio does not help in my case. I also tried changing the polkit policies in vim /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.consolekit.policy to allow shutdown and restart without authentication even if multiple users are still logged in. But that didn't change anything either.
Can anyone help me with this? Just tell me what additional data you might need.
    Thanks in advance!

maybe tracker-miner-fs is still running? If yes, vote for bug
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30529
problem with pulseaudio  was solved with the mentioned configuration, but since gnome-3.6 there seems to be a bug in gvfs that keeps tracker-miner-fs from exiting with session.
This is IMO no more a [testing] thread.

  • GDM and Gnome graphical issues with Nvidia card

    Hi !
I want to install archlinux with cinnamon as desktop environment on the computer of a friend, but I have some issue with it, and especially with (I think) the graphic card, it's a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE.
I tried installing nvidia-173xx from the aur first. I installed gdm, but it's extremly slow, as a result that I can't log in (nevertheless the mouse is fluid..)  the cpu is not so much used yet, and it's the same thing in the cinnamon session or the gnome session (I tried installing lightdm to log in which works fine). Moreover, in the session I've got some strange graphical things, such as some missing white pixels, or a blue window when I launch nautilus, ... (here are some screenshots : http://i49.tinypic.com/2efhm6s.png and a with a window : http://i46.tinypic.com/116m05k.png)
I tried to install the nouveau driver instead, and now gdm don't freeze, I can log in, but there is always these strange graphical issues.
Is the graphic card too old for gnome ? Or did I forget something ?
Thank you in advance for your help !! And sorry for my english ..

I'm no expert on reading the xsession errors, but I had all sorts of problems running gnome3 with my machine of the same vintage.   Cinamon is based on gnome3.  I switched to Mate which is a re-packaging of the old gnome2 along with Compiz for the window manager and all works well.
I strongly suspect that they are using the newer OpenGL 4 API.  The Nvidia FX5200 is stuck at OpenGL 2.1.

  • Minor issues with a first time Arch Install

FInally installed Arch and now facng minor issues:
    I've installed GNOME {wanted to install KDE but that thing required 1 GB install and 2GB disksapce so went with GNOME.}
    I've added
    dbus
    to
    /etc/rc.conf
    and also added
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
on the initrc file on the non root login I'd created but the darned GNOME doesn't start up at boot time.
I have to log in with the user id and then type :
    xinit gnome-session
each time to get GNOME working.
Can't fiigure out the thing that I'm missing out on! Also how to setup/configure AUR? I don't seem to be able to get that thing on the Beginners Guide chalked out!
    Please help.

I'll modify the /etc/rc.conf to make the net as a background process.
but I'm also facing another small hurdle.
I wanted to install MPlayer . After resolving some dependencies, I get a message saying the total download size is 8MB. When I type 'Y' to continue install, it proceeds for a while and then displays a message saying some of the files are not available.
After a little while, when I try to install it again, I get the same message. Can you guys please help me out!

  • Software package list for best experience of Arch with Gnome DE.

I have been a long time Ubuntu user but due to power regression issues have to stop using it on new laptop (Thinkpad T420). Arch linux is the obvious choice to try and i did try it this weekend. I like the base and i think i might stay with it. I seems to have far better battery life without any tweaking - low temperature, no fan no TLP no kernel issues so far. I am having problem setting up Arch linux because of its stripped down nature. I guess i will have to read a lot to make it work me.
My question is i might not be having best experience of Arch with gnome. Is their a list or meta package like ubuntu-desktop which will install all/most of the commonly used programs and settings and from their i can customize it? Or is tweaking done in bits and pieces in Arch?
    Thanks.

There is no meta-package like ubuntu-desktop in Arch. You have to build your system the way you find it most comfortable.

  • [SOLVED]Some issues with fresh arch install.

I freshly installed arch after a pretty long period of time of using other distributions and forgot how many issues I have to deal with when using it.
Alsamixer does not detect my headphones when i plug them in...(does not mute / unmute automatically speakers / headphones)
And another issue with the xorg server i think, I have a notebook and after every reboot i have to look up after touchpad with xinput --list then   --setprop <id>. How can I make it permanent? It's annoying.

Add a command to toggle the auto-mute with the same key, perhaps?
Anyway, that command in my i3 set up does not effect the auto-mute mode so there may be something else going on in your system.
Ooops -- my mistake, my system does that as well...
Maybe something to do with pulseaudio -- I didn't have pulseaudio when I used i3 and I didn't notice that problem then.
EDIT: It might be wise to open a fresh thread for this specific problem -- be sure to use a descriptive title to get the attention of the sound experts (not me!).

  • [SOLVED] Touchpad issues with Eee 900A, only with Arch.

Hi guys, posting here because I'm having a hard time tracking down this issue.
I recently aquired an Eee PC 900A, which I have running the 2-09 arch build no prob, but I'm having one massively annoying issue with the touchpad under X.
Whenever I lift my finger and replace it on the touchpad, at anything but super slow speed (and sometimes even then), the cursor will jump, an in or so back..
Now I thought this might be a hardware issue, so I've tried booting into different distros (after trying tons of configs  for the synaptics driver in xorg.conf), and this dosen't occur in the Xandros distro that ships with the Eee, or in Eeebuntu..
I'm pretty certain it's not a  config issue, Eeebuntu uses hal, I've tried using hal, and dozens of xorg.confs.. I've also tried the zen-eee kernel for the 1000/901's, which is older, and still has the same issue.
So I'm sure this is a software issue, but I'm not sure which.. It even happens if I dont have the xf86-input-synaptics driver installed.. I'm not going to post my xorg.conf here, because it's irrelevant.. I've tried using tons, including the one that ships with xandros..they all change aspects of the synaptics driver, but none affect this issue.
Anyone else having this issue? Fixes, suggestions?
    Thanks.

    hi guys,
I had a similar bug on my netbook with the Elantech touchpad. I have reported a bug to the maintainer of the Elantech driver and I get a patch that fix it.
    description of my bug:
with two fingers above the touchpad, tap alterrnatively with each finger on the touchpad.
    - expected behaviour: the cursor does not move.
    - actual behaviour: the cursor jumps sometimes to the left or the right.
this only happens when configuring the touchpad with synaptics (by defaults, mine is detected as a mouse)
is your bug the same than mine ?
are you using both the proto=exps option and synaptics ? (I still have the bug in this configuration)
if it is the same bug, I have submited the patched kernel to AUR

  • [SOLVED] Totem missing settings on 64 Arch with Gnome 3.6

    Hi all,
after clean install Arch 64 with Gnome 3.6.2 I cant find settings in default video player Totem to set my subtitles encoding (East Europe - Windows 1250).
Can anybody tell me, how or where can I set subtitles encoding in new version of Totem?
    Thank you!

You can access "Preferences" in "Application menu"
    Look at this screen: https://live.gnome.org/Design/HIG/Appli … s-menu.png

  • [solved] Arch with GNOME 2?

    Hi everyone,
I'm a new Arch user, have been using Ubuntu for about two years now and decided this morning to give Arch a try; the install wasn't too bad, the only ultimate problem was GNOME 3... I'm hoping somebody here can tell me if there's a way to install Arch from scratch with GNOME 2 and Compiz instead of GNOME 3? I ended up removing G3 and I'm now using KDE, which is also not what I want, but certainly a million times better than G3.
I had a quick look around, and it's clear that I'm not the only one who hates G3, the old threads on this forum regarding a downgrade are pointing to a lot of empty links, hence my new thread on the matter.
I understand that it's faster to use G3 and so-on, but really it looks like it was built for people who haven't got a clue how to use a PC, and if I wanted that sort of "simplicity" then I would have brought a Mac. I absolutely DESPISE GNOME 3 and I'm really sorry if that has offended anyone.
All I want is the simple, minimal interface that I had with G2, with the cute little foot in the top left corner, my customised menus and the basic window effects; that's it. I don't want Duplo-sized icons, I don't want fancy effects and I don't want the 0.0001 seconds of speed difference or extra security and reliability, because I'd rather my PC burst into flames from some G2 bug than I ever use G3 to do my computing.

    That's hilarious! lol.
G3 is actually pretty good. If you don't like gnome-shell - then simply don't use it.  Compiz works really well in G3 ( i am using the latest version 0.9.5, compiled yesterday from source).  you can customize gnome3 menus, much in the same way as Gnome2.  However, the menus are fairly slow, when i compare them to my gtk2-menu - which had zero-delay in opening.  I've actually removed gnome-panel and replaced it with other tools, as i found gnome-panel to be a bit lame in G3.....you may not mind it though.
anyways,  I wouldn't be too worried about running G3 - a lot of people are in a scramble because they aren't interested in the shell. but the shell isn't a requirement. I think the developers would just prefer that everybody uses GS. while there was talk of not having it supported in the future, i doubt that will happen ~ as we all know Canonical will be porting Unity to run on top of the gnome 3 stack. (right now it uses gnome2).  So i tend to think we should be able to run fallback, for a long time
it just might take some extra-tweaking, to get it the way you want your desktop to be. I'm now actually liking it better than gnome2, myself.  but it did take a bit of adjustment, but "under the hood" - gnome 3 has some nice features and improvements ove G2...
theming isn't too difficult either - so if you don't like fat menus/giant icons... then, you can use a theme that doesn't have that - or edit your theme instead. (i sort of did both). I'm actually working on a nice dark theme, that has gtk2 style window-decorations (narrow/thin), slim menus and some other goodies. Gtk3 - looks really great too!
