It ain't broke........

I'd like to upgrade on my Sprint Curve to ver 4.5 but the instructions have too many warnings that unsettle me.
I prescribe  to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy. Is it that much of an improvement? Am I too timid?
I really don't need any  new pronlems.

eventually your carrier will be nagging you to upgrade, so its best to get it done with. Doesnt matter about the prob;ems as long as you do a backup. if the upgrade goes wrong, you can always revert back, or comepletly erase and reinstall fresh(rather than an upgrade) then your backup will restore your data. ALWAYS do a backup. the upgrade does a backup btu I always do a seperate one first just incase.
Also, pull out your media card if you have one, during the upgrade

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

  • If it ain't broke..BREAK

I can't believe I've put the bloody awful (sorry but I'm angry) Play For Sure firmware etc on my zen Xtra. It brings not only my zen, but also my computer to a standstill whenever they're plugged together. I have tried everything; including jumping up and down and screaming (which never seems to work) so please no obvious suggestions... Yes I have I have tried installing all the firmware, software and drivers, I have turned it off and on again... so please any ideas? It takes 2-3 minutes before I can see my music files which are randomly seen in and out of their named folders. To find an artist/album I have to trawl through the whole list due to the fact that they've 'cleverly' removed the ability to see your tracks as artist/album/genre. I have tried useing third party software such as Notmad, Winamp etc. etc. etc. And guess what? About as fast a Creative reply. Has anyone else had this problem?

Didn't you just finish ranting similar misinformation in another thread?

No one was ever forced to upgrade for anything, except those wanting iCloud.
But since then the computer has been acting strange, not only did we lose iPhoto and Word for Mac but the mail icon dissapears from the dock and working with files that I've worked on before with ease is now harder to open.
If did not lose iPhoto. I owned a disk that I purchased. I did not lose Word as I was using a version which was up to date, and there are many other free options to open Office documents with. If Mail is missing from your dock then simply drag the Apps icon back into the Dock. Takes 2 seconds
Burning disks does not work 40% of the time.
Have hardly misburnt a disc in 2-3 years
Re starting the computer sometimes takes 10 min.  I'm running  a 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo With 6 Gigs of Ram so It's not my computer.
I would argue strongly with that. That is totally abnormal behavior for any computer. Chances are pretty good that you imported over problems from your last system and just made the computer worse.
All my problems started the day I installed LION. Apples new moyyo "If it ain't broke, break it and sell it to 'em again".  If Apple no longer wants to make computers, OS, or Final Cut Pro, SELL those divisions off to someone who does. Go make your phones and music players.
So you obviously just want to rant. My advice, sell your Mac if you don't want to troubleshoot your problems (You have given no information to troubleshoot from or what 3rd party apps you are running) and maybe buy a nice little Windows notebook. I don't think Windows have ever had problems.

  • Firmware fun - why fix what ain't broke? Who pays?

Recently my MacBook failed to recognise a portable Lacie firewire drive. My G5 PowerPC continues to recognise it. The drive is in excellent condition, has operated problem-free for many years and continue to work properly.
After much testing (and posting to another part of this discussion forum) the general consensus seemed to be that it was likely to be a firmware issue.
I wrote to the vendors: "The drive was purchased in 2002. That may sound 'old' to you, but it's in excellent condition, been well looked-after, and continues to perform perfectly. A pretty good ad for a product, no?"
The vendors said, "Having checked with your device unfortunately we no longer have any updates for it... It is possible that updates would have been the issue here as they would provide additional support for newer versions of Windows and Mac OS including more support for firewire and USB."
Does anyone know what the legal position is here? I have a perfectly good product that can no longer be used in the usual way. Do the vendors have a responsibility in storing firmware their clients may need in order to use their products? Or is it the responsibility of the computer vendors to ensure that their customers can continue to access the 3rd party devices they customarily use with the computer?
The drive I purchased has been made redundant through no fault of my own. Can I ask the drive vendors to replace it?

    JoeyR, thanks for your comments.
    JoeyR wrote:
If your drive is being recognized by another machine, I can't see the firmware being the cause for it not working with your MacBook.
The (Intel) MacBook doesn't recognise, the (PPC) G5 does.... Today the vendor wrote, saying there has never been a firmware update for this particular drive.
When you say "recently my MacBook failed to recognize..." do you mean that it did work at some point on your MacBook or it never did?
It's always been recognized by the MacBook until recently.
Does it just not mount the drive or does it not see it at all? Meaning if you go into Disk Utility, can you see the drive there?
    Disk Utility doesn't see it.
If you have any data on that external drive that you don't have stored elsewhere, you'll want to be sure it is backed up before the drive fails.
The FW external drive is used in my workflow, but not for archiving.
The issue began after installing the latest Apple security update (for Intel computers only). As I asked at the start, who pays for the fact that this device is no longer fully available to me?

  • If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! I want classic site back

I speak on behalf of most or for a large majority of paypal users with this complaint: The new paypal site is complete garbage and utterly disappointing. For starters, this is an insult to everyone using it because it is too "elementary" and it doesn't have half of the NEEDED details as the classic site. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if we were ABLE to switch over to the classic site. Now, Paypal has disabled that option, so now everyone is forced to use this simplified, poor excuse for a site that is causing more work for everybody. I understand that new things take time, but the classic site was perfect for our business needs. Why change it? Now, we can't even conduct proper business through your new site. If you don't believe me, just go to the community board and see how many thousands of angry, frustrated, and fed-up that your customers are. There was nothing wrong with the classic site and everything is wrong with the new one. For example: you can't see 1: Which items have been shipped or not, which items need to be shipped, we have to check our email to make sure we haven't missed anyone and as our volume has grown ,this is irritating. Multi-order shipping will pick up most people, but we can't ,with one glance, see what we need to do like we used to in the classic site. We are too high-volume for this. Ebay shipping is even worse, We might have to consider endicia or stamps.com as this has wasted hours of our time and staff time. 2. Multi- order shipping is now several clicks and horizontal scrolling. Whenever you start with horizontal scrolling you are on the wrong path! 3. I can't find my credit card balance, it's very tiny, I haven't even figured out how to pay my credit card balance; what used to be right up at the top is now missing. I don't know if this is an attempt to upsell or why you would treat your customers to this horrible interface. I want to swtich back to classic permanently. This should be called a failure. Paypal needs to leave it alone, fire the people who came up with this, and start over;better yet, go back to what worked.

I completely agree. I hate it. I now use stamps.com and pay anywhere every chance I can. Sick of lining the pockets of PayPal excutives that care less about their Customers!!!!!

  • If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Oh, they did.

Having struggled with several TVs from the early days, each s/w update seemed to get closer to working how they ought. In particular, content should appear basically as it does in iTunes which is after all THE maintenance program to use to control all the content. I refer to sorting. iTunes introduces the 'Sort' tags, with which it is possible to have it display everything in your preferred order. I have all my artists sorting by last name and an artist's albums are shown in release date order. iTunes is fantastic and makes this trivial (apart from the sheer quantity which is hardly Apple's fault). Then you try and play it from an TV and it all goes to pieces.
Finally, during the v2 updates, they got this right and the TV would finally respect your carefully created sort tags and compilation artists were kept out of the main artist list, just like in iTunes. This can only get better I thought.
    Oh dear.
v3.01 has BROKEN it all again. I am simply at a loss to understand how Apple can have screwed up so badly on this one. Many users seem to be suffering hangs and crashes (I myself have had a few) and overall it seems just so slow. But there's worse.
In the Artists list, I can see some artists for which I only have 1 or 2 tracks and they are both assuredly marked as 'Compilations'. THEY SHOULD NOT BE THERE. These should be all be listed elsewhere under Compilations. Bizarrely, most compilation artists are, but some have escaped into the main artist list. How crummy can you get.
    And that's not all.
The artist list is again sorting by the Artist tag and NOT the Sort Artist tag. Likewise albums for an artist are sorting alphabetically again and not using the Sort Album tag. This was SORTED and now they've thrown it out and gone back to the nonsense they had before they fixed it.
This is truly depressing. The TV has such potential, but I'm not convinced it'll ever be right if they continue with this disastrous level of incompetence. Jeez, I'd expect a high school kid to make a better job of it.

I think many of you guys are missing the point which is nothing to do with the value or importance of correctly cataloguing your music collection. Personally I don't give 2 hoots about ratings, or beat (or other tags I consider utterly worthless), but if Apple implement it on one platform then it **** well ought to be the same on their other platforms that use the SAME data and THAT is the point.
Having said that, I cannot see how anyone can be so unconcerned about the sorting of the data since if the artists (or other primary data tags) are badly sorted when displayed in a list then it makes it kinda hard to find what you want and rather defeats the whole point of having all the music on the computer in the first place. But again, I am not arguing this point here.
What I am saying is that in iTunes, a list of Artists gets sorted by the Sort Artist tag (if empty it uses the Artist tag and drops A, The etc) - FACT. TV v1 ignores the Sort Artist tag and sorts any artist list by the Artist tag so e.g. Mark Knopfler is sorted under M which is quite clearly nonsense. During the v2 series of software (v2.4 IIRC), they finally get it right and the Aritsts list then sorts correctly by the Sort Artist tag. They also group compilation artists at this time (as per iTunes) so that the main artists list is less cluttered. Now we get v3 and they've forgotten all about getting v2 correct and not only are we stuck with sorting by the Artist tag again but also compilation artists are 'leaking' into the main artist list. Aarrgghh.
I have over 1,000 artists with over 20,000 tracks and if the sorting is not correctly done it makes using the TV (or whatever device) a misery.
The issue here is that Apple know what is required, that's why they put it into iTunes. They then take WAY too long to implement it on the TV (don't get me started on the iPods and Front Row) and just when we finally get a decent implementation, they bollox it up again in the next 'upgrade'. This is simply incompetence of the highest order.
As a database developer I understand about the care required when displaying data, but it's not hard to get it right. Just use the appropriate field when applying the sort - it's not rocket science and indeed they've done a great job with iTunes. But when it comes to the TV, they seem to have NO idea about what is and is not appropriate. When you want to play all the tracks for a selected artist, you get an alphabetical list. What stupidity is that. Why would ANYONE want them played alphabetically, you just wouldn't. I want them in album/track no. order as that makes sense to me (albums sorted by the Sort Album field of course) and for those who have no interest in the concept of 'Album' (I recognise that not everyone wants them ordered the same way as I do) they can simply select Shuffle - no other options make any sense. But what do we get - alphabloodybetical. This is just so stupid I am at a loss to comprehend how they could have sat around at a table and thought, "hmm, yes, let's sort the tracks alphabetically, that's a good idea". Aaaaarrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • How do I Know if it Ain't Broke or Not?

I updated to QT 7.0.4 on the first day of release throught Software Update. Then I updated to 10.4.4 using the Combo updater. Everything seems OK, but I have read so much about the problems with QT 7.0.4 and the fact that Apple temporarily pulled the freestanding QT 7.0.4 installer and then replaced it. I'm also familiar with the option to downgrade to 7.0.1 and then reupgrade.
I'm confused. Does anyone know if the version of QT available through Software Update was pulled and then replaced? Has there ever been any "definitive" word from Apple as to whether the original freestanding 7.0.4 had problems?
Is there a test to make sure my QT 7.0.4 is as it should be?
I'm not looking for problems where hopefully none exist, but I'm wondering what the best practice would be at this point. Keep what I've got or downgrade to 7.0.1 and then reupgrade?
    Regards,
    Steve M.

QuickTimeKirk, nice of you to try and help but I think we are missing the point here.
I have exactly the same questions as Steve M. but I don't see any suitable answers anywhere - least of all from Apple.
QT 7.0.4 created such a furor that Apple moved quickly (without comment) to provide a "downgrade" back to 7.0.1. It looks as if there is (still) a version of QT 7.0.4 available - Software Update finds it for me now that I am back on 7.0.1 but there is NO indication as to whether this is the "old" version or whether it is a later "improved" version. Hence the quandary.
To quote Steve M. "Does anyone know if the version of QT available through Software Update was pulled and then replaced?"
I would like to know the answer to that question myself but it proving very difficult. The silence from Apple is deafening.
Personally I think I'll stay with 7.0.1 for a while.

  • Upgrade G3 B&W and G4 Single Processor from OS 9.2.1 to 10.4 Tiger?

I Purchased a G4 Installation / restore disk OS 10.4......Used an external DVD drive and disk opens fine on both machines, but when I click on install, both machines give me the following error message (even if I use the "C" key on startup..."startup disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk (-2)....There is no support for OS 9 or it's related browsers on the internet, and I use both my G3 (home) and G4 (business)....I need to have access to the internet in both locations. Would someone kindly give me some advice on how to upgrade to OS 10.4.......drivers?.......use external Hard drive? Many thanks in advance......

Hi Limnos......Many thanks for the info...good stuff. As it turns out, my G3 B&W is a server version and was given to me by a company that I worked for until they moved to northern (brrr) Wisconsin. It has two SCSI cards, one of them the LVD -2 ADPT card. Thanks to you I have already installed the firmware on the card. Some of the info on trhe G3 suggests that I need to be running O.S. 8.6 to upgrade to O.S. X???? I have been running O.S.9.2.1 for years but Comcast, E- Bay and half the rest of the world out there no longer supports Browsers, etc. for O.S. 9....Why would I need 8 when I have 9.2.1.that doesn't make much sense. This computer IMHO was way ahead of it's time and cost the company that gave it to me something in the neighborhood of $2700.00 when they bought it new! It has two firewire ports along with USB and the SCSI
cards and SCSI hard drive.....It is a great computer, and the only reason that I never tried to upgrade to O.S.10
sooner is the fact that it has been rock solid reliable running 9.2.1, and I kept hearing about "glitches going on with the early versions of O.S.10." You know how that one goes..."If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it". I had Adelphia Cable Internet for quite a few years, and they supported O.S.9, but their tech people for the most part were clueless about the macs. I really need to get X on this machine!
One final question...My G4 is a single processor 733 machine, and believe it or not was given to my son when it was only a year old! We didn't get an O.S. install disk with it, but the (gray) disk I just purchased IS
a G4 (specific) install/ restore disk that according to many threads I've seen should work on my G4. I haven't been able to determine from the info you so kindly gave me if it needs a firmware update or not? There seem to be so many versions of the G4 that I'm not sure what category it fits into as far as firmware requirements are concerned........It has plenty of RAM and two firewire ports, but beyond that I'm puzzled. Thanks again!

  • Camera Raw 6.7 Update for Mac OS 10.10:  Installation Failed error message.

Camera Raw 6.7 Update for Mac:  Installation Failed error message.  Update downloaded directly from Adobe website.  Newly purchased Mac Workbook Pro, OS 10.10, using Photoshop CS5. Other updates successfully accomplished.  Camera Raw 6.7 Update was downloaded multiple times with multiple installation attempts. Any recommendations?

thanks for the prompt response...i appreciate it.  according to the link you listed, that's correct.  the strange thing is that prior to the upgrad to mac os 10.8.4, photoshop CS5 was working just fine and i was able to open my canon raw files with my current camera raw plug-in version 6.7 which adobe has indicated is the last camera raw update they'll be offering for cs 5
so it's clearly an issue related to the "upgrade" of the os.  seems like every solution creates 6 new problems...further evidence for the notion that if it ain't broke don't fix it!  thanks again.

  • Can not scan from mx4890dw buttons, only from the computer

    Hello,
I got this Canon AIO a few days ago. I followed the start up guide instructions, got it signed on to the wireless net work easily enough, and installed the software from the CD onto a Win 7 64 bit Dell laptop.
Printing worked perfectly from the get go. Also, "Copy" seems to be working fine. Fax appears to be working, although I can't confirm yet that a fax has gone through ( no one is at work ) and I may have some questions later about how to send and receive fax when sharing a phone jack with a Comcast modem/cable set up. And how to get it to accept faxs while ignoring voice calls.
As for Scan, after I figured out that I had to push the scan button and choose "remote scanner" ( I push the scan button/Remote scanner/ buttons, get the message "waiting" and then operate from the computer) the scan function worked perfectly, in single and duplex, when controlled FROM the computer and Canon MFC toolbox software. But for the life of me I can not get it to scan from the Canon mx4890dw buttons. I push Scan, then "computer", then I select my computer ( there is only one computer), then either color or BW scan. All seems OK until here. But after I select color or BW,  I get a screen that says :"Scanning" with the choice to either cancel or "confirm destination". I select Confirm destination, which then takes me to a screen which says: Confirm destination" showing both the name of my computer and "color scan". That is it, as far as I can go. If I press "OK" it just takes me back to a choice of confirm or cancel. I am trapped in a cycle between these last 2 screens. Once I get to the next to last screen that says "Scanning: cancel or confirm destination", the processing data light starts flashing green. After a minute or so it will stop flashing with the message "an error has occurred/CLOSE". Oh, BTW, I have registered the scanner on the Canon MF Network Scan Utility.
So, I figure there is some button I am failing to push, or I am missing a step. Any one have any ideas on how to get this to scan from the Canon machine?
    Thanks
    Bill

Thank you Deborah, but after many hours of trial and error, time spent with Norton 360 AV/Firewall folks, many install/uninstalls ( especially after I saw on the E-manual that if you plug a cable from the printer into the computer, and you want to go back to wireless, you must uninstall/reinstall the software), the problem is finally apparently completely solved.
I found what I thought might be the problem by accident. When I last got off the phone with Canon, all they had to suggest was that it was either a Norton or firewall issue, or possibly a computer issue, and nothing they could really do or suggest about that. I accepted this, but while wondering what in the world I was going to do, it dawned on me that my previous Kodak all in one( that this machine replaced) had worked fine, with no scanner problems at all, with this computer, Norton and network. So it seemed like it had to be something other than those things. And I believe a Canon inkjet all in one before the Kodak had also worked with no issues scan wise.
Then I decided to try something else on a whim: I cranked up my old Acer Win XP and installed the software, and guess what happened? Perfect function in all ways from the printer/scanner. Scanned perfectly from the Canon using the panel buttons on the printer. And over the wireless network on an old computer using the same Norton Firewall as my Dell. So it now seemed impossible that it could be the network or firewall. It had to be the only variable, the computer or someway the canon was in conflict with the Win 7 Dell. I bet you can see where this is going! So I go to the online support for Canon and sure enough there are Windows 7 drivers for download as well as a firmware update. So I down load these and clock on them, but as far asd I can tell, nothing happens. It appears they did not complete installation.
So the next day I am back on the phone with Canon. Asking in desperation if they can think of anything before I return this machine back to Staples and get something else, which I really hated to do, but I can't take any more of this, as now it had stopped printing also( but all still hunky dory on the Acer!). But this time, the person I am talking to quickly asks if I am trying to install wireless, and says "hold on while I get you to the wireless guys". The wireless expert listens to my problems and quickly says "did you download the Win 7X64 driver?". I said I had tried but it didn't seem to do much. So he has me download it again and shows me the trick: when you click on the download, it creates a folder somewhere else where the driver is actually stored. I click on that driver, and 10 minutes later all is working perfectly. In fact, before I even hang up with the wireless guy, I press the buttons on the Canon and scan quickly to the computer.
So for now all seems perfect, just as it was immediately once I tried it on the Windows XP machine. So I suggest that this be the first thing suggested when folks are having trouble installing on a Win 7 computer. In fact, I have since noticed there is a sheet of paper that came with the canon that advises downloading drivers for Mac computers. Too bad it didn't mention this for for Win 7 also, since apparently at least some of the installation CDs don't include these drivers.
Now I am wondering if I should try and do the firmware update? Kind of afraid to fix what ain't broke.

  • Lenovo System Update and Lenovo Support RSS Feed (X60)

Okay. I got Lenovo System Update (version 5, for Windows 7) and it did not offer me any Critical updates. Only Recommended and Optional ones. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, so I don't want to install Recommended and Optional updates, only the Critical ones if there is any.
On the other hand I also have the Lenovo Support RSS Feed. But they bring me to dead links. For my X60 the two drivers in my RSS Feed are
ThinkVantage Access Connections patch for Access Connections Version 5.95 for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-...
    Patch module for Power Manager for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad -
    Both are totally dead links.
The tricky part is that there is absolutely no correlation between the two: totally different drivers in the System Update and the RSS Feed.

  • Problem with versioning on iPod, backwards compatibility issue with iTunes

i apologize in advance because i'm sure this has been asked time and time again, but i did attempt several searches.
the search function is very muddled and does not narrow down the results very well at all
    here's the situation.
from all accounts i've heard lots of people having issues with version 7 of iTunes.
i'm a simple kinda guy who definitely believes in the age old phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
    so i've stuck with v6.
i recently got a new laptop along with my PC. so i downloaded and installed the latest iTunes without thinking twice.
i had completely forgotten about my concerns from hear say about v7 issues.
i plugged in my iPod and it proceeded to completely erase all of the media on it and then load all media that was on my laptop in place of it.
"well that's a cool new feature", i thought.
after my initial frustration wore off, i immediately uninstalled v7, deleted the .itl file and installed v6.
everything was all fine and dandy. v6 works perfectly on the laptop with no hangups.
    here comes the issue...
i plug in my iPod to begin rebuilding my media onto it after the completely unauthorized deletion, creditted to iTunes v7.
as it autoplays and iTunes v6 opens i'm prompted with this error:
"The iPod [my ipod] cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 7.0 or later.
Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."
i've attempted everything i can think of to completely erase my iPod of any "versioning".
    - i reset it using the "select/menu" button method
    - i reformatted it through XP disk manager
    - i reformatted it through context menu in my computer explorer window
    - i completely just deleted the "iPod control" directory in the iPod explorer window when clicking through the my computer directory
    i'm at a loss.
i cannot figure out a way to get my iPod to function with iTunes v6.
and again, i'm really hoping to avoid going to v7.
    iPod information:
    2nd generation iPod nano 4GB
thank you in advance for any and all information/advice

I am guessing that you used your iPod enough with iTunes v. 7.x to update the firmware to the latest version. That being the case, reformatting your iPod won't "undo" the firmware update, so your only choice now is to update your iTunes software to v. 7.x.
FWIW, iTunes 7 is a vast improvement over previous versions of iTunes. I use it on both Windows and OS X, and without bugs in both environments.

  • Value of upgrading WSS 3.0 To SharePoint Foundation?

We have a WSS 3.0 site which the primary purpose is for storing documents that are shared with external business partners who have AD accounts in our domain without them needing to have VPN and access to our file servers.  It is especially useful for
documents that are over mail size limits or are too sensitive to be sent over email.  Few other features of WSS are in use.
They simply open a browser and browse to the URL, and log in using account credentials on our domain which we have assigned to them.  From there they can download and upload documents.
Also, we use Office 2010, so we will not be able to use any of the features of SharePoint Foundation 2013 that are not compatible with Office versions below 2013.
Since WSS 3.0 has support until late 2017, is there any real value to upgrading to SharePount Foundation 2010 for this use case other than getting a modernized look and feel?
We could just wait until 2016 and upgrade to whatever version of SharePoint Foundation that comes out after 2013.

I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" atttude. If what you have is working for your needs and your users are happy, upgrading may not make sense in your specific case.
My only concern is the upgrade path. As it stands today, to upgrade from WSS 3.0 to SharePoint Foundation 2013 using out of the box methods, you need to first upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010 (in-place or database attach) and then again upgrade to SharePoint
    2013 (database attach only).
Let's say a new version of SharePoint Foundation comes out sometime between now and before support for WSS 3.0 ends. I would expect the upgrade path to be the same as I just outlined above, along with another step to upgrade from 2013 to vNext.
Whether you upgrade now or upgrade later you'll still need to go through the same process. I suppose what really matters is when you want to upgrade.
As always the third-party community will likely have solutions to migrate directly when vNext launches. :)

  • TaxCut 2007 crashes on launch on iMac G5-Please help

I'm posting this plea for help in both the iMac and Panther forums. On my iMac G5, running OS 10.3.9, I have an app, TaxCut 2007, which always crashes on launch. As soon as I click the second of the two "I Accept" buttons, the iMac gives me the "unexpectedly quit" message and asks if I'd like to send the crash report to Apple. I've sent it a couple of times.
I've spent hours trying to get the app to launch. Here are the things I've tried:
    1. Re-installed the app several times, repairing permissions both before and after the install, and restarting the computer.
    2. Booted up from my external hard drive and used Disk Utility to run disk repair on the computer's hard drive. (I also ran Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro. No problems were reported.)
    3. Installed the app on my iBook G3 (OS 10.3.9). It runs perfectly there. But, the screen is so small that it's inconvenient to work with the program on the laptop. I'd like to get it on the iMac G5.
    4. Connected a firewire cable from the G5 to the iBook, and booted up the iBook in target disk mode. Then, on the iMac I navigated to the iBook's application folder and opened up the iBook's version of TaxCut. No luck. Still crashed on launch.
    5. Got a replacement CD from the store where I bought the app. Tried that on the G5. Still crashes on launch.
    6. Downloaded the software updater from the TaxCut web site. Ran it. Still no luck.
    7. Got into a live web chat with a TaxCut representative. They have no clue about what to do.
    8. Booted up in safe mode tried to open TaxCut. Still the same result.
So, apparently there is something about my iMac G5 that TaxCut does not like. I'm including below what I believe to be the relevant part of the crash report (based on a tutorial on how to read crash reports I found on MacFixIt). However, I am not experienced enough to make sense of this crash report. I've looked at all the crash reports since this started happening, and I can say that Thread 0, where the crash occurred, always has this same line that starts with "libxml2.2.dylib."
If anyone can interpret this crash report and help me get TaxCut to work, I'll be very grateful. I only bought it this year because TurboTax, the app I usually buy, requires me to upgrade to Tiger, which I do not want to do (Panther ain't broke).
Here is the (partial) crash report:
    Host Name: iMac-G5.local
    Date/Time: 2008-01-02 17:47:36 -0800
    OS Version: 10.3.9 (Build 7W98)
    Report Version: 2
    Command: TaxCut
    Path: /Applications/TaxCut 2007.app/Contents/MacOS/TaxCut
    Version: 1.0 (1.0)
    PID: 415
    Thread: 0
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x3f00357b
    Thread 0 Crashed:

    Hi Steven Rice-
    Number 7 is the winner!
I am fairly certain that they released this product before it was ready for prime time. I tried to install it from a free disk that they sent and couldn't get past square one. I have read many complaints about the product as well.
    Luck-
