ITunes library became empty

My iTunes library became empty when I started iTunes today. This is the second time it is happening.
Is there any way to recover my library? My music files are still intact and I don't have any purchased music.
Why does this happen and what can I do to prevent this?
When exiting iTunes, I get a "memory could not be written" error from Windows.
Windows XP iTunes 7.1.1.5

Hi, Pak.
I don't think the "memory could not be written" error is connected with your empty iTunes Library. To deal with that message, I'd refer you to the Microsoft Knowledge Base .
As for your empty iTunes Library, although it is blank, your song files are still on your hard drive.
The problem is with your iTunes Library files which iTunes references to know, among other things, the contents of the Music Library and where the files that make it up are located.
There have been many reports of problems such as this recently and unfortunately noone seems to know exactly why it's happening - or if they do they're not talking.
If you don't have a back-up copy of the .itl file, you will want to have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Let us know if it brings you any combination of joy and/or satisfaction. If not, post back and there's something else we can try.

  • Itunes library appears empty

I have about 5GB of music but all of a sudden my itunes library appears empty... I am pretty sure the music is still in my computer but I can't access it.

do you know where on your machine the files are at (start in "my computer", then into your hard drive, and so on)??? If you do then make sure that the directory that itunes has for your music is the same as where they are actually at. If you can't find them do a search for "all files and folders" using an audio extension such as .mp3 or .aac and see if you can locate where they are at.

  • Help! Accidently deleted Itunes library and emptied trash.

I accidently deleted my Itunes library and emptied the trash. I do have Time Machine. Can I use that to restore it? I went into Time Machine and couldn't click on the "Music" folder where my Itunes library was stored, even on backups earlier than when I deleted it. Am I doomed? How can I restore my library?

Sure. Just open up Time Machine and choose a time frame when your library still existed. Find the file and click restore.

  • How can I transfer music from my old iphone 4 to the new iphone 5S without having the music synced to my laptop (e.g. my itunes library is empty)?

How can I transfer music from my old iphone 4 to the new iphone 5S without having the music on the old phone synced to my laptop (e.g. my itunes library on the laptop is empty) ?
I tried the "Transfer Purchases" option - however this only worked for apps - not sure if I'm missing some sort of setting.
I do not want to use iCloud as I do not have enough space for my music.
    Thanks!

You cannot. The music must be in the iTunes library first. See these User Tips:

  • HT203167 I had a hard drive crash & lost all of my music. Most of it came from ripping my CDs, which I can do again. I'd like to clear my iTunes library without emptying my iPod too. Can I do this?

When I tried to remove the existing library so I could start ripping again, I got a message that said that all of the library entries I delete will be removed from my iPod next time I sync.  I do NOT want to do that.  It will take me some time to rip all of my CDs again, and I don't want to have an empty iPod in the meantime.
Is there a way to clear my iTunes library of all of the invalid songs (which is most of them) and not have them deleted from my player?
Thanks - any help is appreciated.  Hard drive crashes are awful.

Unfortunately I do not.  I had all of my music on this external drive that crashed.  I have a replacement drive now but the re-ripping process will be slow to come.  I just basically wanted to start with a `clean slate' in iTunes without emptying the contents of my iPod.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • I moved all my files around on my computer to free up space now itunes library is empty?

i moved all my itunes folder, music, photos etc.. on to d drive to free up space on my computer as c drive was full as i was unable to backup my iphone or update software due to memory space. After i did this i went back in to itunes but all my music, apps etc are gone. It also does not recognise that this is the computer where all my files for my iphone & itunes library are stored. It will not let me backup my phone or update without wiping everything off my iphone first, as it says plug your phone into the computer where your files are stored to update or it will update my phone using this itunes library which is empty??Can anyone advise please?

I have the similar issue.  Can someone please help us?

  • HT2905 iTunes library: launches empty, or with randomised duplicates

Hi. Since shifting to a new desktop computer, iTunes has behaved unpredictably. It either launches empty, or with randomised duplicates and triplicates, sometimes for copies of a song. But not every single track - skips some folders. Sometimes it won't include a folder it did last time. Sometimes, duplicate files are written back into the into the original folder on the hard drive. It has wiped all the playlists that existed on the old computer.
I have tried uninstalling/re-installing, creating new libraries, nothing works. I have gone through every folder on the hard drive to remove duplicates, but iTunes still launches with duplicates.
Is there a way to force iTunes to remember a library once I have spent time organising it the way I want it?

Launching empty is often a symptom of interference by third party software. You don't have a Sony VAIO do you? Other possibilities include AV software and automated backup tools. Basically anything that could lock the database file when iTunes wants to update it.
An iTunes library is (mainly) a list of pointers to files on your hard drives, and playlists are more lists of those pointers. Deleting files from the hard drive doesn't delete the records in iTunes. Depending on exactly how you choose to add files to the library, and various preference options, it is quite easy for iTunes to create duplicates because that is essentially what you are telling it to do.
We should focus on the stability issue first, no point doing any other housekeeping until we know it is going to stay fixed.

  • How do I restore my itunes library? My computer was restored to factory settings and I couldn't find a restore date that allowed my to get access to all of my files. Now my itunes library is empty minus the songs we've recently purchsed!

MY computer was restored to factory settings. Is there a way to get my previous itunes library back? I don't have an Ipod or other device that I saved my itunes library to.

Restore the media from the backup of the computer.
If it was simply restored via the Windows restore point, no data on the computer should have been affected.
If the computer was formated and Windows re-installed, no data remained on the computer and will have to be added back by the user.

  • HT1386 Syncing with iTunes when iTunes library is empty

My laptop melted down recently and I had to restore it to factory settings. I lost my music including the iTunes library. I still have many iTunes tracks on my iPhone, but can't sync the phone with iTunes any more because a message appears saying I will lose all my iPhone tracks. How can I upload (sync) my music tracks from the iPhone to iTunes so that I have a back-up of my iPhone content?

iTunes will not transfer music not purchased from iTunes (ripped) music from your phone to your iTunes library.  You will have to purchase 3rd party software such as Touch Copy to accomplish that.  This guide explains how to sync your phone to a new iTunes library without losing your data and settings: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141.

  • Files moved to external hardrive now iTunes library is empty

I moved iTunes to an external hard drive, but when I go to use iTunes the library is blank. I still have the library on the new drive, how do I get it to appear back on iTunes. My iPod has not been docked so the library in on the iPod as well. Please help.

    Did you put back
    i both
the music files and the original 'iTunes Library.itl' file to their expected spots?
If the music files are returned without the correct ITL file, you'll end up with a blank Library. If the ITL file is in place without the music files, you'll end up having song references within iTunes with the '!' symbol.
My guess is that you need to find the 'iTunes Library.itl' file that was used when the music was on the C: drive. Did you make any copies of this (before or during your move attempt) or do you have any backup copies of this file? It will need to be placed in the 'My Music\iTunes' folder, replacing the current one that is there.
If the only ITL file you have is the current 'blank' one, you may have lost some music information (playlists, last played, playcount, date added). We can get the music back into the Library with the remainder of the meta-data.

  • ITunes library is empty, even after importing xml file

HI! I found the article and a couple of threads here about restoring the iTunes library and followed the steps but it hasn't worked.
This morning I tried to open iTunes and a box came up saying 'importing iTunes library', then the box went away, iTunes opened and everything was blank. I found the article about restoring the library which said to find the iTunes folder and drag the old files to the trash then import the xml file which I did but iTunes is still blank. I've tried importing the libraries in the 'previous iTunes Libraries' files but nothing is working. The files seem to be there, including the songs I've bought recently...but how to get them back into the library?
    I didn't upgrade to 8.0....

Hi - we actually found the problem - for some reason Realplayer was set as a default to play all media files. Went to Preferences, set iTunes as default and restarted and presto - the library was there... Hope that helps!!

  • HT2518 I did the all of it and it transfered but can't see any of it even my iTunes library still empty where is al my data?

I transfered my pc to my Mac but I can't see any pictures or music mi iTunes library is empy!  What can I do?

1 - iPhoto never forces you to upgrade - any upgrade of the software is initiated by you
2 - what version of iPhoto did you have? What version did you upgrade to? What version of the OS do you have?
3 - what exactly happens when you launch iPhoto?
4 - with no backup it is just a matter of time until you lose all of yoru files including your photos - thing do happen and with no backup you are 100% guarenteed to lose everyhing sooner or later
as a wild guess backup, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • ITunes Library keeps emptying..why???

I am running one Windows 7 machine, with 3 separate user accounts. There are currently only 2 iPods being used for the system, my iTouch 3rd gen 32 GB, and an old 2nd gen Nano 2 GB. I am having problems with the iTunes 10 Library. Every time I open iTunes, The entire library disappears. I then try to recreate the library, and then it seems to work for a few days, then the iTunes Library Extras and Genius database files get placed in the Recycle Bin. I have iTunes pointed for each of the 3 user accounts pointed to C:\Users\Public\Public iTunes so that all 3 accounts can access the full library (This was something that was suggested by a member of the Genius staff at my local Apple Store). What do I need to do so this stops...I hate that I can't save my playlists to a folder so they can be loaded back into iTunes; this would make it so much more bearable. I have lists of over 1300 songs that I hate to recreate. I also hate that my iTouch then pulls all the songs off, and I have to recreate the apps...a royal pain. Thanks in advance for any help!!!

I've just had this exact problem (files in the recycling, library blank, etc) for the second time after only just getting my library back to the organised state it was in before the first occurrence.
After reading a few treads and noticing people mentioning that it has to do with certain antivirus programs I checked Microsoft Security Essentials which has just been added to my computer through a recent update. Seems that conveniently the library deletions have coincided with the scheduled scans performed by this software (in my case 4am on a Sunday).
Havn't verified this yet 100% but if anyone else notices this pattern I would be interested to know
