IWeb '09  - Simplify URL

I have a commercial domain, we shall call it "domain". www.domain.com
In iWeb, the "site name" is also shown in the URL when published. This looks awful. Sure I could shorten to a single letter or number, but surely there must be a way to conceal this?
How do I get iWeb to sown the domain and then the specific HTML file. For example:
www.domain.com/index.html
www.domain.com/images.html
etc...

All hosting services are not created equal. A lot of them require that you upload to a pre existing folder. In this case, if you want to upload more than one site, you have to upload the whole folder and accept the folder name in the URL.
To avoid this you can switch to a hosting service that allows multiple dedicated IP addresses in one account.
I use Host Excellence and this company allows me to create a folder for each website and name it the same as the one produced by iWeb. The contents of the local published folder are uploaded.
Entering - domain.com - in the browser will take you to the Home page.
You get what you pay for and the account that I use allows 15 dedicated IP addresses for about the price of a MobileMe subscription.

    Hi,

  • Publish settings ok, then iWeb doubles my url

I've re-done the iWeb publishing tutorial countless times and still can't get my site up. The connection tests correctly. All is good on my ISP's side of things. After I publish, iWeb 'doubles' my url as in "Your site has been published. Your site is located at http://www3.telus.net/madeupname/www3.telus.net/madeupname". My url, as entered, should be http://www3.telus.net/madeupname
    Why is it doing this?

Please provide your real url so people can see what is happening. Does your url work when you type it into a browser?

  • ITunes Looking for the "Title" of my iWeb Podcast Page/URL???

have created a podcast page in iWeb and tried to Submit to iTunes and now it asks for the Title of the Podcast???
Have filled in as many of the page names, file names as I think is possible and still get this message.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Would be great if they had a link on the iTunes submit page that would tell us what to do on iWeb.

You are making your podcast in WordPress and submitting it to Feedburner to pass on to the Store. If you want to change the title you have to do this in WordPress: however it looks as if Feedburner generates the feed filename from the title:
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheInconvenientTruthFileInPodcastTheInconvenientTrut hExploringTheFactsBehindTheFictions
so if you change the title you will likely change the URL and iTunes will lose contact with the feed. I don't know whether it will do this (logically it shouldn't) but you would have to find that out from their Help (if any). Otherwise you can only try it and if the feed URL does change, change the title back.
As you don't have direct access to the Feedburner feed, then if Feedburner changes the URL you will not be able to add the redirection tag necessary to change iTunes to a different feed - so it's possible you may be stuck with what you've got.

  • Iweb home page url

    Hi.
On my website I have the word /home written after the homepage url.
    i.e www.coolexample.com/home
Is it possible to get rid of the word home? and just have www.coolexample.com?
I'm using fetch to upload my site.
    Many Thanks

    @mood
iWeb is a nice tool and as far as wysiwyg software it really does the job.
A little digging in the code it generates reveals that it uses a lot of DIV containers to lock the various graphic items into their place. The contents of these div's are stored in a seperate pagename_folder.
So if you have a page called : demo.html then you will find all the resources of that in demo_files.
Downside to this extra folder stuff is that you will be uploading a lot of the same files over and over.
I have yet to find a sollution for this.
Now to get rid of the Home issue, as I said in the first post, Publish to a local folder and then go into that folder into the HOME folder and from there upload everything you see there into the www-root of your ftp server and you should end up with http://www.yourdomain.com/demo.html
I do agree with you that this is all not as you would expect.

  • IWEB not uploading URL correctly

For several days I have been struggling with IWEB to get it to load to my url through ftp. Here is the thing....IWEB makes you do a "site name" and when you do that it becomes the landing URL for example I want people to type in www.photocandy.biz and get to my site. Well I have index for example as my site name and so as a result the url is www.photocandy.biz/index this is what it is defaulting to. I am so frustrated I dont know what to do please help.
    Thank you

What iWeb does is not incorrect - it is the way that iWeb does it and has done it from iWeb 06. It is the site structure that is used like it or not. When published, iWeb creates your Site folder that will be the same name that you gave your site in iWeb and also a separate index.html file and both of these need to be uploaded to your server, so hence your url will be http://www.domain.com/sitename/pagename.
If you want anything different, then you will probably need to download Cyberduck free from the internet. This is a dedicated ftp client. From iWeb use the publish to a folder option and then connect to your host using Cyberduck and rather than uploading the whole site folder and index file, just upload the contents of your site folder. Your url will then be http://www.domain.com/pagename. Note that RSS feeds will not work if you do this as you have broken the site structure.
In iWeb 09, I think it might be possible to do the same with the built in ftp by naming your site either 'public_html", "www", or "htdocs" or whatever your host has for you to upload to. You then leave the directory/path field empty and then upload and you should get just the contents of the folder rather than the hole folder itself.
I have never tried this so don't know whether it works. Although I use 09, I still publish to a folder and upload with Cyberduck.

  • Iweb 08 site url

i have numerous iweb 08 sites, each with 2-3 pages. if I were to re-arrange the sites so that they are in alpha. order, will this change their url? I mean, it seems like it shouldn't, but before i start messing around with things, thought I'd ask the experts. :o) thanks!

  • Iweb and homepage url

Hello! I am very new to iweb. I would like my url to look like: http://web.mac.com/user name, but instead it looks like: http://web.mac.com/user name/Site/Welcome.html.
I am sure there is a very simple way to fix this, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately not. That is the way that websites made in iWeb and published to MobileMe will look like. The url will always be http://web.me.com/username/sitename/Welcome.html.
It is just that you have to call your site something in iWeb. It won't accept it otherwise, so you could shorten it even more to something like S so it would then be web.me.com/username/S/Welcome.html. The only other way is to register a domain name and then use masked forwarding so all you get as a url is www.yourdomainname.com.

  • Personal Domain using CName question/ How to simplify URL?

I have iWeb '06 set up to publish to a personal domain that I purchased through GoDaddy.com. It is working fine, except that when I enter my domain name, the URL comes up as follows-- "http://www.mydomain.tv/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html" Is there a way to get the URL to EXCLUDE "iWeb/Site" and just read "http://www.mydomain.tv/Welcome.html"???
    Thanks!

Different options are discussed here in section 1.2.

    Thanks!
I had the same issue. I'm using iWeb -> Fetch (FTP) -> Godaddy (hosting).
    Here's what to do:
When you publish to a folder, iWeb creates 2 documents: an index.html file, and a site folder (whatever your site is named in iWeb).
If you upload the index.html + site folder you get the double domain name.
If you upload only the contents of the site folder (and not the separate index.html file), you get the simple URL, what you would like.
Using Fetch and Godaddy, I open the Site folder created with iWeb that has all my web files in it, select all, slide them into my Fetch window, and they all upload at once to Godaddy. This has been working for me without a hitch. If I want to update the site, I slide over a new set of contents, and the new ones simply replace the old ones.
    One tip:
In your FTP client (e.g. Fetch window), you'll see a combination of files, the ones you've uploaded as well as a handful of files Godaddy puts in there to make the site work. If you ever want to quickly distinguish which are theirs and which are yours, click on the date field so the files are arranged by date. The handful of Godaddy files will be segregated together based on the date the hosting service was established. Your files will be segregated together based on when you uploaded them.
    And one caveat:
It's been reported that uploading just the content of your site folder w/o the separate index.html file can interfere with blog syndication through RSS. Therefore, if you need this feature, you may need to upload both the index.html file and complete site folder.

  • How to shorten iWeb URLs

I see that I can change the master iWeb page's URL.
But I cannot shorten the sub-pages.
How can I change a blog/blank/photo page's url to be:
    http://web.me.com/lastname/pagename
    Thanks,
    Mike

You can't do what you want. With MMe it has to be:
    http://web.me.com/MMeAccount_Name/Site_Name/PageName.html.
The only way you can change that is to purchase a domain name and have domain name forwarding.
Using the CNAME method. That will give you the following URL:
http://www.yourdomainname.com/SiteName/PageName.html, still more than you want.
If you use the simple URL forwarding and masking you will get:
    http://www.your-domain-name.com/
This will be for each page in the site. The downside to this masking is that visitors can only bookmark the first page of the site. That may or may not be a problem for you. My tutorial site is set up that way: http://toadstutorials.info/

  • IWeb as part of URL?

I seem to recall reading that one of the enhancements in version 1.1.1 is that one can have shorter URLs -- iWeb need no longer show (I am assuming here that one is hosting it on Dot Mac and not using domain masking, etc.).
    In other words, instead of:
    http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/sitename/pagename
    one could simply have:
    http://web.mac.com/username/sitename/pagename
However, after upgrading, my URLs still include iWeb. Even if I create new sites.
    Any suggestions or comments?

The only thing I remember regarding URLs is that after iWeb 1.0.1, you no longer have to type the trailing /iWeb/ on the URL....
http://web.mac.com/yourname/iWeb <== used to be required
http://web.mac.com/yourname <== now this takes you to the same place
I don't recall anything else about further shortening of the URL. Now, if you are publishing more than one site to .Mac, then your must specify the entire URL down to the sitefolder...
    http://web.mac.com/yourname/iWeb/sitefolder1
    http://web.mac.com/yourname/iWeb/sitefolder2
You don't need to specify the pagename because iWeb will setup the redirection index.html files for you. But you must not leave out the /iWeb/ part of the URL.
I hope this "solves" your question. If so, please mark my reply as "solved" using the little buttons in the title bar of this reply. Thanks.

  • IWeb generated MobileMe hosted site - Can I customize the URL?

I hope that my question is worded properly. I am not at all a pro. The site was created using iWeb, but the URL http://web.me.com/[YourMemberName]/[SiteName] is not desirable as the member name has nothing to do with the content. Is it at all possible to shorten the URL to http://web.me.com/[SiteName]?
    Thanks for your consideration.

    Bonjour
Your page URLs are like that:
    http://web.me.com/YourMemberName/SiteName/Pagename.html
And they can be like this (if you buy a domain name) :
    http://www.mywonderfulwebsite.com/SiteName/Pagename.html
    but you can't have
    http://web.me.com/SiteName/Pagename.html
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=MobileMe/Account/en/acct17114.html

  • How do I add Bloglines graphic to my iWeb page

I have created a knitting blog using iWeb and .mac. Most knitters use Bloglines to follow their favorite sites. I have added RSS to the top of my blog but would also like to add Bloglines and its subscribe button.
I went to Bloglines, created an account, and went through the steps to pick an icon and generate the HTML to add to my web page. I have no clue how I'm suppose to add this code in iWeb.
I did a search of iWeb's help and it seems there are only 3 choices for adding feeds, RSS, podcast, and photocast. I just want to add Bloglines to this list.
Am I not understanding what RSS is? I thought it was different than the more specific Bloglines. Traffic to my site will be limited if I can't figure out how to hook into the knitting blogline community.
    Thanks in advance,

Instead of putting the HTML code that you get from Bloglines into your iWeb HTML files, it will be easier just to import the button graphics into iWeb and then attach the appropriate hyperlinks to the buttons using the iWeb Inspector Hyperlink tab... Here are some general steps...
    1. Go to http://www.bloglines.com and log into your account.
    2. Click on the Feeds tab.
    3. Click on the "Get a Subscribe To Bloglines Button" link
    4. Decide which button you want to use and the Control-click on the button image.
    5. Select "Save Image to Desktop" from the menu that pops up.
    6. Go ahead and enter your iWeb RSS feed URL and then click "Generate HTML"
    7. On the next screen, you'll see some code that looks like this:
    8. Copy the underlined URL from your generated HTML code. This is all you will need.
    9. Now launch iWeb
    10. Drag the button graphic that you saved into your page
    11. Select the button and the open the Inspector Hyperlink tab.
    12. Check the box "Enable as hyperlink"
    13. Next to Link To:, choose "External URL"
    14. In the URL field, enter/paste in the URL from Step 8
That should be it! You can select the button graphic on the page and copy and paste it to any number of locations on your iWeb pages now. The link and everything should stay intact.
Let me know if this works out for you. Good luck!

  • IWeb 08 and RSS feeds on godaddy

Hello friends - I am setting up a website to be hosted on godaddy. I had no problems uploading the site using easyiwebpublisher. However, I want to use the blog function. I set up the blob on iweb and I can read them on the site, but when I click the "subscribe to RSS" link on my page it says:
"The page you tried to access does not exist on this server. This page may not exist due to the following reasons:
You are the owner of this web site and you have not uploaded (or incorrectly uploaded) your web site. For information on uploading your web site using FTP client software or web design software, click here for FTP Upload Information.
The URL that you have entered in your browser is incorrect. Please re-enter the URL and try again.
The Link that you clicked on incorrectly points to this page. Please contact the owner of this web site to inform them of this situation."
Any help on how to get the RSS feed to work w/o mobileme?
I understand it may not work without MobileME but I wanted to know if anyone has a workaround.
    One more bit of data:
When I publish to folder the pop-up has me enter the URL for my site because "iWeb uses the URL to provide an RSS feed for your blog."
Does that mean I put http://www.weirdfantasy.com/ or should I put the URL for my RSS feed page? http://www.weirdfantasy.com/WeirdFantasy/News/rss.xml
I put http://www.weirdfantasy.com/ and I get the error message.
    Jawko -out...

If I upload the index.html that isn't in the sitefolder, won't it just overwrite the one in the sitefolder?
No. You can't overwrite something inside a folder with something you put outside the folder. It is normal for there to be an index.html in both places in an iWeb site.
I just did that using the godaddy FTP uploader and now I can't get to my homepage. Says it can't be found.
I recommend that you never use the uploader provided by a host, as they often result in things not being uploaded correctly. Instead use a real ftp app.
