January Programming Competition

January Programming Competition
The goal of this months programming competition is to create a simple utility for reformatting one string given a second formatting string. Each person may create a custom syntax for the formatting string or simply duplicate an already existing one. Please use a logical formatting syntax and nothing too cryptic. For example "tar.gz|tgz" could be an example formatting string that would replace all instances of "tar.gz" with "tgz" in the source string.
The following are requirements for each difficulty level. You may expand your program beyond the scope of these guidelines but your program must do at least the following:
Novice - You must create a simple utility that can match and replace characters in a source string with characters from a formatting string. You do not have to worry about case. This is the basic requirement and may be met using any programming method of the users choice. Your program may not simply call a prexisting program. It must do the work internally. Have fun!
Intermediate - Your program must be able to do everything in novice category and also provide an option (maybe a command line switch) to make the process case sensitive. Note that you should be able to do both a case sensitive and unsensitive operation. Also, you must provide a means of setting the range the formatting operation, instead of always operating on the entire string.
Advanced - You must complete all the above with the addition of processing of pre-defined fields. For example, "001|%d" could mean to replace "001" with the current date. This is a simplistic example, but you get the point. You may create as many of these fields as you wish and these don't have to be limited to static information just the date. Something like a counter (numeric or alphanumeric) would be nice too.
Remember, these are basic requirements. You should probably make a better program than I've outlined here. Also, language is not a factor here and zsh/bash style scripts meet the requirements.

I think the point is that sed easilly supports the intermediate and advanced portions... yes the novice stuff is very short, code wise, but for a novice it brings to light some very important techniques.  I think the true point of this is when you start adding "%foo" fields and case (in)sensitivity stuff.
True. Being a perl-novice, I figured that this was the perfect opportunity to make myself a bit familiar with Perl. The actual replace part is no longer than 5 lines, but I've already learned a lot about pipes and command line args.
Btw, I like this assignment. I was just asking if the script that I was working on would be valid, but on second thought it doesn't really matter to me .

  • 64 bit ATM deluxe actually works, you just can't install

I actually could hardly believe it. Is Adobe Really that lazy that they can't just repackage the installer so it will work on a 64bit version of windows? Well, it seems so.
I went to my coworkers computer, who has the same version of the software as me, and simply copied the whole folder from his computer to the (x86) program files folder.
When I tried to run it, the software gave me an error that there was no database in windows, but it let me create one. Everything worked fine.
I added our company font set, and they are working fine in Photoshop and Illustrator. I didn't check AE, Encore, or Premier, but I assume those are fine as well.
So it looks like all you have to do is install it on another 32bit computer, and just copy the files over. Someone should test that on Vista too. I hear it doesn't work in Vista? Just make sure if you install it somewhere else Just to copy it to the licensed version, you uninstall it on that computer after you are finished copying it.
Hopefully Adobe will get their act together and start making these things compatible with an OS they Claim to be obsolete. 80,000 people are at our company and it looks like everyone who uses Photoshop will be converting to XP64 within the next 9 months. Hmm, obsolete? I think they fail to realize that large corporations don't use the newest software, not that their software is Really that compatible with Vista either. lol
Hope this post helped some of you guys. I'm still laughing inside that something so simple worked.

To understand why ATM is no longer supported, you need to understand the history of the product and its original purpose going back to 1989 and the
Font Wars between Adobe on one side, with its Type 1 font technology from PostScript, and a coalition of Apple and Microsoft on the other side with their TrueType font technology developed by Apple but liberally "borrowed" from Imagen, a laser printer company from the 1980s.
The first version of ATM for Macintosh was released in December 1989 strictly to allow host-based copies of Type 1 fonts to be rendered "on-the-fly" for the screen as opposed to the user having to install bitmap versions of such fonts tuned to a particular screen resolution and point size. The Windows version followed within a year or so. Effectively, ATM blunted an attempt by both Apple and Microsoft to put Adobe out of business by locking Type 1 fonts out of the desktop. ATM allowed use of fully-scalable Type 1 technology on both Macintosh and Windows before TrueType was actually available for either Macintosh or Windows. This unholy alliance of Apple and Microsoft also pushed a Microsoft-provided clone of PostScript, TrueImage, licensed from Cal Bauer (that's a separate story but needless to say, that CloneScript was really poor and failed very quickly; Apple came running back to Adobe for Adobe PostScript for their new LaserWriters without ever actually releasing a product based on Microsoft's TrueImage).
Subsequently, Adobe released its Multiple Master variant of Type 1 fonts that provided the facility to vary weights, widths, and other aspects of fonts, generating custom "instances" of fonts to better match the designer's needs. ATM was used to control the building and installation of Multiple Master instances.
Over the years, two additional functions were added to ATM. The more recent was support for OpenType CFF fonts (i.e., OpenType fonts with Type 1 outlines) and in the "Deluxe" version of ATM, a very rudimentary font manager.
Over the years, i.e. by the time Windows 2000 and MacOS X shipped, there original raison d'etre for ATM was gone given that beginning with these OS versions, Type 1 and OpenType CFF font support was now native within the operating system based on Apple and Microsoft individually integrating Adobe code into the operating system. The only purpose left for ATM under Windows 2000 and Windows XP was to support creation and installation of Multiple Master font instances. Given that Adobe stopped developing new Multiple Master fonts back in the late 1990s and shortly thereafter stopped licensing them, the need for Multiple Master support outside of Adobe's applications themselves (which still support existing Multiple Master instances, either those primary instances delivered with the fonts or user-created instances) diminished to next to nothing.
The only function left to ATM was that of
font management, historically the weakest aspect of ATM Deluxe.
Adobe then had to make a decision in terms of the future of ATM. The bottom line was that given the relatively weak font management capabilities of ATM Deluxe - it provided no auto-activation, was based on very ancient code that was incompatible with new OS versions, and was fairly incompatible with Adobe's new applications, Adobe had to measure the cost of developing, marketing, and supporting an advanced, new generation font management program competitive with other products already out in the marketplace performing similar functions. Simply stated, the decision made at the time was that (a) given the cost of developing, marketing, and supporting a new, industrial strength font manager, (b) given existing reasonable quality font managers available from third parties that seemed to meet the market's need, and (c) given what users were actually willing to pay for such software, it was not worth Adobe making the necessary investment to create a "next generation" ATM.
Could that decision be re-evaluated some day? Maybe although it is unlikely that such a re-evaluation will yield a different decision! But for the time being, Adobe Type Manager is a product that is no longer marketed or supported.
Can you coerce ATM Lite or ATM Deluxe to install on 32-bit Windows Vista? Probably. Will it run on Vista? Possibly although we have heard mixed reports and Adobe won't support you if you mess up your system trying to use it. 64-bit Windows (both XP and Vista) is a different story. The ATM installer is a 16-bit program that simply won't run on these 64-bit systems (same is true with the old
Adobe Universal PostScript Printer Driver Installer). Can the ATM code itself run - Andy Engelkemier claims it does, but don't count on it properly interfacing with Adobe Creative Suite applications properly or respecting the multiple user environment. Given that other fairly competent font manager software is readily available at reasonable cost, you should carefully evaluate the value of your time continuing to run an ancient, unsupported, low functionality font manager with no future versus migrating to products are still being developed and supported by their developers.

  • Cannot change location with my iPod Touch - always Brussels!

I live in Belgium and set my iPod Touch for Brussels time zone. Great, but yesterday I arrived in JAPAN and even though I try to set the general "Date and Time" for Tokyo, the clocks all show the time for Bruxelles-- that is when I look at international time clocks, it shows the time I've set for TOKYO as the time for Bruxelles (Brussels) -- so when I set the time for 3pm in Tokyo then look at the international clock it says TOKYO is 8 hours later, 11:00 pm -- i.e. iPod Touch thinks I'm still in Brussels--
---when I go back to General settings time and date, yup, it is back to Brussels--
I even did a reset (not total, just basic settings) and NO CHANGE I can't get the iTouch to set the current date and time for TOKYO.
Why not? Is the January program download causing a problem? I wouldn't think so, but...
(I have been using the new programs since the day they were offered)
Any comments appreciated-- I travel lots and love the international clocks-- but I need them to be correct! Can't be a Brussels only iTouch!
Thanks, Steve Tuesday 12 February 2008 (Tokyo)!

  • Slacker radio download rip off

I'm still upset of what the customer
service and her supervisor did to me! what i only want is to reduce my bill
that i never use nor download the file! her name is casey and her supervisor is sam. I spoke
with them last night. I was questioning my bills is to why is more even i
disconnect one of my line. she go over my minutes and told me that i have extra
charges on my account.  i been with verizon for almost 6 years, i never have a
problem with their customer service before and they always very helpful but
yesterday was my lucky day that this 2 people gang up on me and decided that go
ahead bring your business somewhere else. This extra charges was slacker radio
that i cannot even remember what email address i used since it was last year. i
email slacker radio yesterday to find out when is the last time and an email address that i provided them was log in
their system that i dowloaded their application. to make the story short the
last time they give me credit was last year and since then they charge me extra
$10.99 for each month that they said i have slacker radio in the system. Also they credit me $10.99 last billing cycle that i pay.
I was thinking, FINE that was a year ago, i said to myself  but its is only start
of the billing cycle so i want that extra $10.99 out in my account. Sam the
supervisor told me NO cannot do it. which i know he can but decided that he is willing
to lose me as a customer because he want to stand by what casey her beloved customer
service rep. decided.  Verizon will go down if you continously hire this type of people
that cannot comprehend and rather provide bad customer service. may god help you
guys to survive with this program competition cause i'm pretty sure you will
loose with this type of service. Casey was telling me that i pay high on my bills cause i'm always late on paying you guys. while Sam was telling me go ahead shift you will get charge with early termination and other. Dont you think i care if my credit will be ruin just to get away with this type of service?  I rather give my business somewhere else and trust me Sam the one you cannot fix other can. AS LONG AS I"M PAYING MY BILLS AT VERIZON!  I AM PAYING YOUR PER HOUR RATE!

Please be aware that you are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums. The people who will reply to your posts are, like me, in almost all cases your fellow users.
If the track you wanted was only available when purchasing the entire album, as I see most on that album are, then that was how the content owner insisted it be done and there's nothing Apple can do about it. If you then chose to purchase the entire album, that was your choice. It's unlikely that Apple will now refund your money on that basis.
As to a defective track, delete the problem track(s) from the iTunes library, allowing iTunes to move the track file(s) to the Trash. Then download the track(s) again from the iTunes Store via this procedure:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
That fixes the problem for many people. If problems with the tracks persist, go here:
    iTunes Support
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.
    Regards.

  • TreeSet bug? Please take a look.

I just got back from a programming competition. I'm very frustrated because I wrote what seems to be correct code for one of the problems, but I'm getting very strange results. After the competition I showed the code to several people and no one could figure out what's wrong with it. I'd like to know if it's a bug in Java 1.4.2_05 or my fault. Here's the problem:
You are given a file with a list of names of songs in it. For each song you find, you must increment it's popularity, it is also case insensitive. So if you find "oh yeah" and "oH YEah", that song has a popularity of 2. Finally you must display the top five most popular songs.
Here is the input file (songs.in):
    ACM ROX
    syzygy

                        return true;
                   else
                        return false;
}The result from running this code is describe as follows: At first it will add the song to the TreeSet correctly, and the next time around it'll correctly show that there is one Song in the TreeSet. However, as more songs are added, the amount of songs returned by the Iterator remains only 1. It then says for a while that there are only two songs (when there should be a lot more), and sometimes it will actually decrease in the amount of Songs returned! (It will iterate through 3 songs, and then drop down to 1 song in the next loop around).
Any help figuring out what's going on is greatly appreciated!

It's not a bug in TreeSet. Lots of code uses TreeSet and works just as it should (with respect to the Set). Given a wild guess I would suppose you are modifying your Objects WHILE THEY ARE IN THE SORTED SET, thus making them unsorted and basically unfindable later. I would suggest (for a quick fix) taking the Songs out of the Tree, incrementing the popularity, and reinserting them. As a long term fix I suggest you Map names to popularities (or songs) and then finding the best ones afterward.
    ~Cheers

  • Hotkey for "next frame" and "previous frame",or for next and previous layers

    Hi,
I'm an animator and I love drawing with Photoshop's brush tools, but to animate I need to "flip" - which is just rapidly switching from one drawing to another, as you would with sheets of actual paper: hunting and clicking on arrows isn't feasible.
Hotkeys, or assignable hotkeys, for next and previous frames in animation - or, simpler, hotkeys for next and previous layers - would solve this problem completely.  This simple improvement could make Photoshop a viable animation program, competitive with Plastic Animation Paper and Flipbook.
Is there at least a way I can download an add-on that would do this?
    Thanks,
    Joe

Hi! I have a Creative suite Design Standard 9 Adobe program and I am attempting to make a wizzard form that can be made into an entry form for a competition. So I need to 1. Make the form into a question and answer form that Participants may fill out. 2. make it possible for them to download it via a link on our website 3. make it possible for them to save the info they have written into the form and mail it to the mail we have supplied in the entry form and 4. make it possible for them to put in a jpg. as part of the entry for and lastly 5. make it possible for us to copy paste the document and use it on other platforms. How do I do this - is it at all possible with adobe?

Those requirements are go way beyond what PDF forms can do and are meant for, some of them would require involving other programs or are mutually exclusive and contradictory. You are wasting your time even thinking about doing this as an "offline" PDF form. Simply sign up for an online forms/ survey service like FormsCentral or Surveymonkey.

  • IMac buy back program? Ideas?  Just got a i7 2010 in January... And now the new ones have thunderbolt and 3.4 ghzs

As stated, I got an i7 2010 model in january, and the new iMacs just came out.  Is there some kind of buy back program with apple?  If not :/ .  Anybody have ideas? (I also noticed the new maxed out is cheaper than the 2010s). Thanks everyone!

There's no buy back programme I've ever heard of.
The i7 you've got is still a pretty potent machine - does it do everything you want or do you need something that the new iMac's offer.
If you really want to replace it with one from the new range I reckon your best bet would be eBay. iMac's have a good resale value. Have a look here (UK site): http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p4712.m570.l1311&_nkw=imac+27&_sacat=S ee-All-Categories

Did you reset your Preferences and Photoshop tools.  Photoshop Preferences are not removed with an un-install and an Install does not install preferences.  Preferences are created  for a user id when a user ID start Photoshop  and there are no preferences for the user ID.

    Does Save As-work?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Program error when try to use 3D repousse in Photoshop CS5 extended?

Please help!!!! Unable to use 3D repousse Photoshop CS5 Extended  (my system info is described below)
I tried almost everything that is available in Adobe library help, also re-installed programs as requested by Adobe support (suspected to get rid of me), it did not solve the problem.
I used to have 3D capabilities, and also crop tool worked well before (now it changes all layers when using crop even in background).  My PC is same,  nor I downloaded plugins or changed video cards (these things are too advanced for me!), also restored preferences many times.
My system makes automatic updates, reviewed graphics and adobe as recommended.
OpenGL settings is odd …only can access basic, other modes are not highlighted (normal or advanced).
    ERRORS (for 3D Text)
1-“Your 3D scene now exceeds the limits of lights and/or textures for the video card’s hardware-accelerated 3D rendering. As long as the limits are exceeded, 3D rendering will be done in software only, and some features (e.g Repousse)will be disabled.”
2- “Your video card does not meet the requirements for hardware-accelerated 3D rendering. All 3D will be rendered with software only “
3-“ Could no complete the text layer command because of a program error”
    ERROR (for object)
Open GL/GPU HARDWARE ACCELERATION IS CURRENTLY  DISABLED. 3D WILL NOW BE RENDERED WITH SOFTWARE ONLY.  TO ENABLE OPEN/GL  ACCELERATION, GO TO PREFERENCES > PERFORMANCE TAB AND CHECK THE “ENABLE OPENGL GRAWING” CHECK BOX.
Is it possible that I have a GPU Sniffer? all these terms I have learned recently =)   but I have a healthy & capable graphic card and accepted by adobe standards.

thank you for replying...but it seems an easy answer again  like one given by support....I had photoshop working perfectly before with same video card, I think in one project I clicked something in program (photoshop)that was not ready to correct it by itself... It should be available for the program to give warning several times to the user, I do not know what made Photoshop to disable OpenGL settings, and not be able to reverse action!!!!!  How do I change a GPU sniffer?  I an not a tech, all these things I just learned reading....had spent hundreds of hours....really dissapointed of Adobe and  its support....it is not fair to sell an expensive program without support, it seems to me that  I know now more than a live customer support.
