I've been trying to make a java program of mine standalone, so I can distribute it to others and allow them to run it without use of a compiler, etc (ideally just a .exe or .bat that they double click on). Everything I've found says I need to create a .jar of my program in order to do this. I was finally able to create a .jar but I got different errors relating to "main-class" and "manifest" issues...I tried running it with javaw.exe and had the same problem.
Some tutorials briefly discuss "meta manifest's", other's skip the concept all together in creating .jar's. I created a jar with:
jar cf A2.jar c:\jarTester.java
after changing my command prompt path to
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_01\bin
It created the .jar, but nothing worked. As above, it gave me errors relating to the "Main-Class" and "Manifest". So here's my question:
What involvement does a "manifest" play in .jar's, and how do I create/use one to create a .jar? Why is it necessary to specify the "Main-Class" when I have already done so in my .java file?
I believe that once I can get this "Main-Class" and "Manifest" problem straightened out, I will be able to create a batch file with the line:
java -jar A2.jar
is this correct? THANKS.

Executable jar files and manifest file

Hi,
I have the following files in a folder named: Test
a.jar
b.jar
c.jar
Driver.class
Driver.mf
Here, MainClass is the main executable class that uses a,band c.jar files. This is how my MainClass.mf file looks:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Main-Class: Driver
Class-Path: a.jar b.jar c.jar
Now I use the following command to make one executable jar file:
jar cmf Driver.mf DriverMain.jar *
It creates an executable jar file named : DriverMain.jar
Now I copy the executable jar file (DriverMain.jar) into a different folder named: RunTest
and double click it, doesn't work.
my question is:
what am I doing wrong? Any special characters needed in my Driver.mf file (space/newline/etc)?
What I am trying to get is: One execuatble jar file so I can just double click to run it, and that single executable jar file will have all the necessary jars in it (i.e. a.jar, b.jar, c.jar in this case)
Anyone please help!

Sorry to disappoint, but you can not use embeded jar/zip files within an executable jar. The JDK sadly for some reason decided this was not a useful idea, so developers like me who want to distribute plugins with thier own dependencies have one of two choices. You either have to unzip the jar file that contains the embeded jars to a directory, then run your primary exectuable jar, OR you have to write a custom classloader that your "launcher" creates then loads the embeded jar files.
The best thing to do is either jar up a, b, c and driver into one jar, so that it works, if you can legally do this. A lot of 3rd party libraries may not allow this per their license. Otherwise, another choice is to use a free installer or buy an installer that allows you to distribute a single exectuable installer program that will properly create the dir structure you need.
As for the way it works, if you declare:
Class-Path: a.jar b.jar c.jar
the JAR loader code in the JDK looks in the root dir where your application was started for a/b/c jar files. They have to be on disk.
If you want to place them in /lib, for example, you would havd a jar file like:
Driver.class
Driver.mf
lib/a.jar
lib/b.jar
lib/c.jar
When unzipped, your "root" dir would look exactly like the above, and your manifest would have Class-Path using ./lib/a.jar ./lib/b.jar ./lib/c.jar
Anyway, there thus far isn't any way around this issue of embeding jar files in an executable jar file. You MIGHT be able to not specify any classpath, then in your Driver.class, create a new custom classloader that dervies from URLClassLoader, but in the findClass(), you get a ref to the .jar file that the classloader class is inside of, and from that use it to find the lib/*.jar files and add them to the classpath. For this to work, however, your Driver.class code should ALSO be contained in an embeded jar file that is loaded by this custom loader. The only thing Driver.class would contain (and I would rename it to something like Launcher) is the code to create the custom classloader.
It's fun stuff, but a little bit of work to make it work. You can infact make it work! I may yet one day take our plugin engine custom loader and create a way for this to work!

Jar: Manifest-Attribute "Class-Path"

I've got a problem with the Class-Path-attribute of the JARs manifest-file. So I've written a real simple application to test where the problems occure... but even this trivial app does not work!
The execution starts at "Starter.java":

Jar files and Main-Class attribute

Sorry, I know there are other topics regarding this argument but none of them helped me solving my problem.
I've tried a thousand time in every possible way, but I still can't run my application from a jar file. I've got a package called client, whose main class is called Client. The package contains a sub-package called Icons. I've put everything into a jar file and added this manifest:
Manifest version: 1.0
Name: client/
Sealed: True
Main-Class: client.Client
But it won't work. I've tried to erase the Sealed part, I've tried "Main-Class: Client" and also "client/Client", I've tried putting into the jar the client directory and I've tried omitting it, but the answer is always the same:
Failed to load main-class header etc.
Can anyone help me? Please, I'm almost desperate!

Xms and Xmx parameters

Hi, on a windows machine with jdk1.3 I start oracle's oc4j(standalone) from commandline. I specify Xms and Xmx parameters. Hence;
java -Xms512M -Xmx512M -jar oc4j.jar
is the command line command.
But after I start the app server, when I look at the Window's task manager the java. exe has about 50M memory usage. Is there something wrong???

The best option is to set it in setDomain.cmd/sh OR comEnv.cmd/sh depending on your WLS version, since even if you are starting your manage servers from commandline rather than using nodemanager, it will internally use this to set the environment.
However if you are using nodemanager, you might try "server start" tab for passing JVM arguments.

Manifest and classpath frustration

I have a very simple standalone application. It is not an applet - it's a simple command line program that parses an XML stream and stores the results in a database. This app depends on a ton of external jar files. I would like to be able to build and run this thing - on different platforms - without having to mess with a bat or sh script. From perusing the web, it seems like I should be able to do this with a custom manifest file ... but I can't seem to get it to work. I keep getting a class not found error. In a nutshell, my jar looks like this
lib
com
META-INF
Insid the lib directory are around a dozen jar files
Inside the com directory are all my class files
Inside META-INF is the manifest file.
My manifest file looks like this:
Main-Class: com.mainClass.RunMe
Class-Path: lib/jarOne.jar
**lib/jarTwo.jar
**lib/jarThree.jar
Note that the *'s indicate spaces and I do have a blank line at the end of file.
When I try to execute using:
java -jar myJar.jar
I continually get class not found errors. If I run in verbose mode, I can see that my classes aren't getting loaded.
Can I do what I'm trying to do? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated as I'm running out of ideas and patience.

This isn't always legal. You can't "legally" assume you can extract any commercial jar file and bundle it with your app. If everything is open-source then there should be no problem. But for commercial apps, this wont work, at least legally.
There are two solutions that work best. One is to use an installer that provides an executable launcher (.exe on windows, .sit on mac, etc). This will provide a setup.exe (or setup.sit or setup.sh or something for each platform), that will then install your app like a commercial application. This will take care of unzipping everything you want in the right directories. There are a couple of free/open-source installers, VAInstall is one that I can think of that aren't too shabby. At work we use Install4J which is pretty good.
The other way is to use a custom classloader. First, your initial "main" class is nothing but a stub loader. It simply creates an instance of this URLClassloader subclass. You use it to find and run your "real" main() method within the classpath. URLClassLoader has a protected addURL(), but the constructor allows you to pass an array of URL objects, each that can be a directory of .class files or specific .jar/.zip files that become the classpath for the classloader instance. With this info, you can use a custom loader to add each of your .jar files located on disk as part of the classpath. The problem is, if they are on-disk, this isn't helping. What your custom loader needs to do is override loadClass(), getResource() and so forth, and provide a way to find classes from embeded jar/zip libraries inside the main jar file. This way, each time any class uses a class in an embeded jar/zip, your custom classloader looks inside the embeded jar/zip files for it as well. It's not prettty, but it works well.
One final thought, a plugin engine based application framework is a way to go. My own project, www.platonos.org (sorry, as of this posting the site is not up yet, but the project at sourceforge is available and CVS contains the code) can solve these issues. In our plugin engine, which is about 70K, each plugin has it's own classloader and classpath, and our PluginClassLoader not only handles embeded jar/zip files, but resources as well within them. Also, a plugin first searches its classpath before going to the parent to find classes, with the exception of java classes which are delegated to the bootstrap loader which is what loads rt.jar.

Help with creating jar file and running it ?

I have a program with a package called classes and a sub-package called classes.mainLib.
I am trying to create a JAR file of the class files in mainLib. There is only one class file in classes and that contains the main method. So this is what i am doing:
1. create a manifest file with: Main-Class: classes.Cars
2. from within the mainLib directory (./program_name/classes/mainLib/) i do this:
jar cvf mainLib.jar manifest ./*.class
3. Then i move this jar file to ./program_name/lib and change directory to ./program name/
4. try to do this: java -jar ./lib/mainLib.jar
But it errors with:

Any ideas why this is happening. the manifest is included in the jar'ing

At a glance, it looks like you are placing only the
class files in the jar and trying to navigate your
classpath to run it. Instead, you have to place ALL
the package folders into the jar from the root of
your package hierarchy and the jar runs anywhere, in
any folder. The packages are INSIDE the jar.
also I see cars/classes in a path you describe ...and
the program seems to wnat classes/Cars ??? Could
this be an additional issue (or am I missing seeing

Jar downloading and Caching

I have an application that runs on a couple of servers. It's an assessment engine, so you take a test and for each question you download a new jar. Each jar is about 50-500k.
What i don't understand is that once the jars are cached, it still takes a significant amount of time to create the next question on our production environment. On staging and development it is much faster.
Granted the production environment receives production traffic and downloading the jars the first time should be slower, but once the jars are cached, why would it still take a lot of time. Is there still that much interactivity between the servers checking the jars on the server? It seems to me that once the jars are cached from the staging environments and production environments, they should behave practically the same.

If the Java Plug-in cannot get this information, there is no point in caching since the JAR file will be downloaded every time it is used. Even with this exception, however, the applet should work fine. This exception is merely informative.
Now I specify only the one jar in the archive section of the html, which contains a jar with the classpath to all the necessary jars in the manifest and and Index file as well.
Each new jar shows up in the java cache and the console itself refers to the jar in the cache....

Line Breaks in JAR Manifest

I'm currently using a maven plug-in to generate a manifest file using the java.util.jar API. When creating attributes in the manifest, the plug-in inserts line breaks in comma-separated lists automatically to make the Manifest easier to read. When the manifest is written using Manifest.write(OutputStream), line breaks are added every 72 characters despite the fact that the attribute value already contains line breaks.
Should this be reported as a bug or is there another way to format the manifest so that the line breaks don't destroy the readability.
From the generated manifest:

JAR files and Applets

I'm completely new to the whole .jar thing so i was wondering, after i package an applet and its respected classes within a .jar archive. what information should be in the manifest file?
lets say the applet is called, AppletText.class , and it makes use of the classTest.class class.
im using netbeans and i made it generate manfest file automaticaly. this is what it gives.

when i click to execute the jar, i get an error message

so how do i make it execute the way i want? (execute the applet and allow use of the class)

How to jar a packaged java class? (I write this so I don't forget to create jar file again :-( ..)
Consider the package is under the folder c:\classes and you have folder ml where you write several packages such as
- package ml.gui (c:\classes\ml\gui)
- package ml.algorithm (c:\classes\ml\algorithm)
- package ml.utils (c:\classes\ml\util)
- etc..
- and a main class, lets say "tool" as package under ml\gui (package ml.gui.tool)
so the folder c:\classes actually contains folder ml and ml has another folders.
Step to create packaged class jar:
Step1: Create a "Manifest.mf" file at least contains the following text:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Main-Class: ml.gui.tool
Created-By: XXXXXX
Note:
* tool is the main class that will be executed
* the purpose of manifest can be found anywhere
in internet
Step2: Open MSDOS to c:\classes
Step3:
Execute the following command:
jar -cvfm <jarfiletobecreated.jar> Manifest.mf <packaged class>
In my case, the command is:
jar -cvfm ml.jar Manifest.mf ml/*
The above steps should create a jar file ml.jar and can be executed with command java -jar ml.jar or write batch file that contains the command.
Correct if i'm wrong.

Execution from JAR files and Classpaths -- Help

I am confused about how classes are resolved when running from within a JAR file, and why this is different than running a class that is not inside a JAR file.
I have an application that uses classes from a third party library stored in a JAR file (biojava.jar) . If I run the app from the class file it works as expected and is capable of finding the external classes when the path to the biojava.jar is on my classpath. It also works if biojava.jar is instead placed in the extensions folder jre/lib/ext folder without an explicit path entry in my classpath.
However when I package all my application classes up in a JAR file and try to execute the application from the JAR file it will ONLY work if I add a manifest entry to myApp.jar ... Class-Path: biojava.jar AND I place the file biojava.jar in the SAME directory as the Packaged JAR application. I would like to find a way to make this JAR file work for anyone who has biojava.jar in their classpath or ext directory. In other words I don't want my user community to have to copy the biojava.jar file when I email them myApp.jar. This community will already have biojava.jar on their CLASSPATH.
How can I make my app within a JAR recognize either the user's CLASSPATH or ext folder? I have tried reading the documentation and many experiments but the only way it works is as described above.
I am running Running Windows 2000.

This works perfectly
NONE of the following work
0) Placing biojava.jar in my jre/lib/ext directory instead of the same dir as SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter
(this is the first class referenced from biojava.jar)
1) Just see if it will find the proper jar on my classpath
Manifest: Main-Class: org/biojava/app/SequenceSpiral
I have biojava.jar on my classpath but not in same directory as SequenceSprial.jar
java -jar SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter
2) Specify the name if the jar in the Manifest Classpath and see if it will find the proper jar on my classpath

I did some more testing and I think I now understand what is going on.
I don't like it, but at least I understand it.
The problem: I have an app packaged into a JAR file, myApp.jar. It has a dependancy upon an external JAR file extern.jar.
extern.jar is on my Classpath (and also in jre/lib/ext)
1) For some reason (bug?) java -jar myApp.jar does NOT use the classpath or the jre/lib/ext mechanisms to find .jar files needed to resolve references to external classes. This seems to be true even if you add an explicit -classpath argument on the command line!
thus
java -jar -cp c:\\absolutePathToMy\extern.jar myApp.jar
also fails as does
java -cp c:\\absolutePathToMy\extern.jar -jar myApp.jar
2) Inside the myApp Jar file you can specify a URL to an jar extension jar file but the URL IS RELATIVE TO THE PATH WHERE THE myApp.Jar is executed from! If I add the Manifest item Class-Path: ..\..\..\myexterndir\extern.jar then
java -jar myApp.jar
works correctly and resolves the external references.
This is why several people have reported that this class-path mechanism works ONLY when the extern.jar file is in the SAME DIRECTORY as the myApp.jar file when they had added a Class-Path: extern.jar to the Manifest.
However together these two items make it IMPOSSIBLE to distribute myApp.jar to others and have it work since the path names statically encoded inside the jar are relative to where the jar gets executed from. If I move myApp.jar to a different location on my hard drive it may also fail.
In my case I know all my customers already have extern.jar (5MB) installed on their classpaths and I would like to just send them the myApp.jar ( .5MB ).
However I don't see how to do this given the current specification of a JAR file, and the bug that makes all -jar file act like they have the Sealed=true property.
I tried explicity setting Sealed=false in the manifest but this didn't seem to have any effect.
I hope that this will save others the many hours of time it has taken be to determine that JARS are not well suited for deploying apps with dependenncies on external libs.
I also hope that someone can show me how execute a JAR and specify a classpath that doesn't get IGNORED my the classloader used in loading the jar classes.

Option -splash and -Xmx result in "Unable to launch JVM" error

Hello everybody,
we have a severe problem with launching our Java application using the "-splash:" and "-Xmx" command line options for which we cannot find any solution in the web. Our application needs a lot of heap space, so we usually set "-Xmx=920M". Usually, we are working with Java 6 and use the "-splash:" option to show a splash screen while the application is loading. In some cases, we get an "Unable to launch JVM" error now. This happens only on particular customer systems (servers as well as desktop machines) and the only solution is to decrease the maximum heap size for a couple hundred megabytes. The latter is usually unacceptable since our application requires a lot of heap memory and the machines do have more than sufficient memory. The other option is to completely remove the "-splash:" option, but then there is of course no splash screen anymore.
Unfortunately, we are unable to track the error back and to figure what exactly is going wrong. Does anyone of you have any hints how to debug or analyze the error? Our assumption is that something is wrong due to memory partitioning which leads to unsufficiently large memory partitions to allocate the required heap memory by the JVM.
Any ideas?

It is already hard for you to diagnose such an occurrence, I wouldn't expect anything more by asking in a forum. At least you have SOME way of doing some more diagnosing.
I'm sorry, but you'll have to dive in deep. Figure out what update versions of Java the failing machines are running. Which OS. Which processor architecture. Etc. See if there is a common factor involved. If not, hunt through release notes of newer JDKs to see if any of them mention something related to the splash screen and if you find something, let the client attempt an update of the JDK on such a failing machine to see if the problem is remedied. If it is windows, try running with the server VM (java -server) in stead of the default client VM, if you are not already doing that.
And yeah if all that fails and nobody else has something to add, I'm sorry to say that Oracle support will be your next logical step.

JAR files and J2ME

Just starting a J2ME project.
An embarrassingly Noobie Question:
1) All the classes that are supposedly "built-in" to my device (phone)
do NOT need to be included in the deployed JAR file, right?
2) Anyone know how to do that in Netbeans 5.0?
Project -> Properties -> Build shows sources filtering
but that doesn't include anything from my "input"/library .JARS.
However, all the com.*, javax.* and java.* files are being included in
my output JAR file and it causes failures in preverify and loading
on the phone.
