Java and linux

I read the followig blurb on a website (http://rimuhosting.com/howto/memory.jsp):
Resolving: High Java Memory Usage
Java processes can often consume more memory than any other application running on a server.
Java processes can be passed a -Xmx option. This controls the maximum Java memory heap size. It is important to set a limit on the heap size, otherwise the heap will keep increasing until you get out of memory errors on your VPS (resulting in the Java process - or even some other, random, process - dying.
Is the second paragraph accurate?

I do not think you are correct, at least on the Linux
platform. I don't think there is a default max heap
in Linux, neccesarily...
Does anyone have any info on this? I have spent a
great deal of time researching, to no avail. It is correct information. Also, you are incorrect when you say it does not apply to Java 5. If you had bothered to read the information I directed you to, you would have found the following:
-Xmxn
Specify the maximum size, in bytes, of the memory allocation pool. This value must a multiple of 1024 greater than 2MB. Append the letter k or K to indicate kilobytes, or m or M to indicate megabytes. The default value is 64MB. Examples:
-Xmx83886080
-Xmx81920k
-Xmx80m
On Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 SPARC platforms, the upper limit for this value is approximately 4000m minus overhead amounts. On Solaris 2.6 and x86 platforms, the upper limit is approximately 2000m minus overhead amounts. On Linux platforms, the upper limit is approximately 2000m minus overhead amounts.
I was fully aware of the various conditions that alter the answer, including the server class machine variation. If you had properly asked the question, giving the specifics that you had, you would have received an answer that fit the specifics; you received an answer that fit the question, and a reference to more information.
Please learn how to ask questions correctly, and also research before you argue about the answer - it appears you are more interested in arguing than in the answer. Server class information http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/vm/server-class.html

  • Need help for java and linux

    Hi, guys,
I am being involved in a project. My current task is to build an interface using java. This interface will obtain some information from a linux-based software called NistNet, which is done by C and has GUI as well. My question is, can I use this java-based interface to obtain some information that is typed in this NistNet'GUI? If I can, how can I do that?
    Any hint available?
    Thanks!

You can bridge between Java and C using the "Java Native Interface" (JNI). There used to be a good tutorial on this site but it vanished for no apparent reason in some resent update, so try a websearch.

  • Sun Java and Linux PPC?

I've installed yellowdog linux on a Mac Mini and it seem that sun doesn't provide any installations for linux-ppc. IBM does and it works s this is not a big issue but a link or something to IBM could have made my life easier.
Now I go for the NetBeans installation and this is a binary file probably x86. Why cant you provide the installation using a java application or someting other than an executable?
Is there any way to install NetBeans on ppc based linux?

Hi ! I saw the message only now ... I think the class files are loaded from JVM which has to be correlated to the platform (32/64 bit) so I think the only preoccupation is to find netbeans in archive format !
See this link http://www.netbeans.info/downloads/download.php?a=n&p=1 here you can find the q-builds in tar/gizipped or zipped archives. These ones are development versions. Try these ones ! Bye !

  • Problem with java, ASCII and Linux

    Hi Friends,
I has a Linux RedHat 9.0 with a jre1.5.0_04 (rpm package of Sun).
I has a problem with ASCII , for example :
    import java.io.*;
    public class HolaMundo
public static void main (String[] args)
    System.out.println("Hol Mndo");
this programs runs ok on my windows jdk so it prints "Hol Mndo", but when i run the same HolaMundo.class program on my linux redhat it prints "Hol Mndo"
I think the problem is with the ASCII table that uses the linux version of jre, but i dont know how to solve this problem. I need a Spanish-European ASCII table on my application but i think it is working with a US-ASCII table.
Then i has installed a kaffe 1.0 (rpm) java machie on this linux and this solve the problem but i has another problems of compatibility with this old version of java kaffe.
    Do you know whats happening?
    Thanks in advance.

The problem doesn't have to do anything with Java or Linux as far as i can see. It's more likely a problem with Windows XP and IE. Be assured that normally downloading the Linux JDK in windows is not a problem.

  • Fonts in java apps for win and linux

    Hi everyone.
i need to build an application mult-plataform, to run in windows and linux...
but i dont know waht font i must use...the default font that java takes doesnt exist in linux (dialog)...
waht font should i use in my app??
    thanx

For going multi-platform it is easiest to stick to the logical fonts: Fonts named "Serif", "SansSerif", "Monospaced", "Dialog", and "DialogInput".
These fonts are guaranteed to exist on any platform, although their implementations may be different. If you use others then you'll have to figure out how to deal with cross platform issues.

  • Are Java and Flash (or any plugin; as a matter of fact) supported on Linux Firefox 8? I don't see any lib or plugins directory in the install directory.

I don't see any plugin support on installing Linux Firefox 8 tar.bz2 package. I've tried symlinking libnpjp2.so and libflashplayer.so to the isntall directory but Firefox doesn't seem to recognize those. I don't find any mention of disabling plugin support (Java and Flash specifically) on Firefox 8 release notes. Is anybody else facing this issue?

Thanks. Creating a "plugins' directory inside the profile directory, and putting symlinks to plugin files inside the directory solved the problem

    Hello,
Just a quick question: can we have an official position from Sun regarding support of earlier releases of Solaris with Java RTS 2.1? Our customer is currently running Solaris 10 Update 3 with current Recommended patches, and the 2.1 beta cyclic driver supported this version of Solaris. However with the official release version of 2.1, support for U3 disappeared (only U4 and U5 are now supported). Aside from "rubber stamping" the Solaris build via /etc/release, is there a technical reason why U3 is no longer supported? As long as our kernel is up to date, can we safely use 2.1? Or is it just a case of being unable to officially support and test so many releases of Solaris?
Is this a general rule-of-thumb we can expect in future: only supporting the last 2 updates of Solaris 10?
    Your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

  • WebObjects Java Client-JNLP fine on OS X and Linux, Windows problem

    Hi,
I have been making a somewhat fruitful exploration into WebObjects Java Client development in order to get my nice IB interfaces for prototypes functional and deployed in a cross platform environment.
I have made some good strides in figuring out the semi-documented process of Java/IB integration, and how to build (including adding external libraries) and deploy onto a server (if anyone else is interested I will share; perhaps a blog is deserved), and though I am able to run it from both Mac OSX and Linux clients on the network (the Linux interface currently looks like garbage but will work on that), when I try to run it on windows I immediately get the following error tab in General:
An error occurred while launching/running the application.
    Title: ProfessionalTradingRAD

It looks to me like the problem is with trying to rename the directory to a name with multiple periods, which works on UNIX but not on Windows. Is this a familiar problem? Is there any workaround/solution or any intent to fix?

  • Differences on Windows and Linux JVM about java.util.zip package

    Hello, there!
I need some help if someone else has already face this problem.
I have a Java server that process the bytes of a SWF File stored in the server and ouptut it to the user through a Servlet. The file was decompressed and re-compressed using the java.util.zip package (Deflater/Inflater).
Everything works fine on Windows Server 2008 server. But now we need to migrate the server to Linux. The problem is that when I test the website now, the file seens to be corrupted.
What really intrigues me is that everything runs normal on Windows Server configuration, when changed to Linux, the final file seens to be corrupeted... what could possible be the cause? Is there any difference between java.util.zip package on Window and Linux JVM?
    My Windows Server is:
    . Windows Server 2008 (6.0 - x86)
    . Apache 2.2.11
    . Tomcat 6.0.16.0
    . Java JDK 1.6.0_12-b04
    My CentOS Server is
    . CentOS 5.4 (2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 - i386)
    . Apache 2.2.3
    . Tomcat 6.0.16.0
    . Java JDK 1.6.0_12-b04
Please, if someone could give me a lead, I would appreciate very much!
    Thank you all in advance,

Thank you for the answer, but no. The path is correct. That's not what he meant. Zip file/directory entries are supposed to use / as the path separator. It is possible to use \ but such Zip files will only work under Windows. You may have erred here.Ohhh, I had really missunderstood what Ray said. But, I still think that this is not the problem, since the ZIP is a single SWF file generated by Flex SDK 3.4 and compressed in the ZLIB open standard (as in page 13, at [http://www.adobe.com/devnet/swf/pdf/swf_file_format_spec_v9.pdf|http://www.adobe.com/devnet/swf/pdf/swf_file_format_spec_v9.pdf] ). This is how Flash Compiler compress the files.
    jschell wrote:
If the above suggestions do not solve the problem...Specify in detail with the exact steps used how you determined that it was corrupted. The reason why I believe the SWF is getting corrupted is that when it is loaded by Flash Player (in the client-side) the Player throws a VerifyError: Error # 1033. The [documentation says (see error 1033)|http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/runtimeErrors.html] that this error means that the SWF file is corrupted.
As I said, what intrigues me is that this work perfectly in a Windows Server 2008 server. I just had setup a CentOS server and deployed the application. The client-remains unchanged, so why could the result change?
    raychen wrote:
I would remove the side effect you are doing and send the file straight through, with decompress and compress, the servlet. It is more likely that you have a bug in your swf processor than the zip library.
I had already tried it when first coding, in Windows Server 2008, it had not worked.
Thank you all for the help.
