Java Applet's Blank

After the Java 2012-003 update for Lion, Java Applet's in Safari are blank or unresponsive. I'm not prompted for missing plugins or anything, it's simply non-functioning. I've enabled the Applet plug-in and Web Start applications, but it has no effect. In Chrome and Firefox, I am prompted to install missing plugins, but if I try to do so, it says that no plugin can be found and gives up.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
java -version
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

• Java Applet Certificate Signing Window comes up BLANK!

Hi Everyone I have a problem where
Java Applet Certificate Signing Window comes up BLANK!
It comes up as blank gray panel with the java logo on the upper left.
the title bar says "Java Plugin Security Warning"
And I can't figure out what to do to make it come up properly. I tried double clicking it dragging it around to make it repaint itself nothing happens.
I have tried clearing temp files deleting files from IE, deleting cookies, clearing the history.
Now i'm going to restart the computer and see if it works.
It is supposed to give me buttons.
1. Accept for this session
2. Grant
3. Deny
4. View Certificate
But does anyone have any idea how to address this issue ?
Stephen

You might try setting the trace level to 5 in the plugin's Java console and looking what it spits out while the applet is launching. I remember seeing loads of information in there including stuff relating to certificate validation. It might be helpful.
The trick to getting this info during start up:
1) get the plugin to load by directing your browser to page with a known applet. Write your own little stub applet and load it or go to http://java.sun.com/. There's an applet on that page.
2) bring up the plugin's console if it's not already and then go to a blank page.
3) set the trace level to 5 in the console. (just press the 5 key).
4) go to the page that launches your applet. You'll have tons of information pour out in your console.
Happy hunting.

• When Java applet invokes JavaScript which executes window.showModalDialog, get popup with about:blank

When using a Java applet that invokes a Javascript function that in turn calls window.showModalDialog, a pop-up dialog that only contains "about:blank" results. Selecting "show desktop" from the Windows 7 taskbar and then viewing the FireFox window results in the true dialog content being displayed. Everything worked properly until very recently (and old versions of FireFox work) and I suspect something was changed in FireFox as a result of the recent Java security failures.

Hello, I don't know about this specifically but this is what I would try.
Instead of the string "破烂物程序员..."
Set the encoding type in the String constructor first...
ie:
new String( "破烂物程序员...","GB18030");
Here is a little class I whipped up to show the CharSets that are available to you..
public class ShowAllCharSets
ShowAllCharSets()
Map myMap = Charset.availableCharsets();
Iterator iterator = myMap.keySet().iterator();
while (iterator.hasNext())
System.out.println("Char set name = "+((String)it.next()));
public static void main(String args[])
new ShowAllCharSets();
}Then use the preset charset String with the specific encoding already set for your menu items.
GB18030 I picked arbitrarily because it is Chinese and you may have to try another.
Good Luck!

• Problem Launching Java Applet with Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_01

Hello out there:
I recently installed j2re-1.4.2_01 on my home computer but have been unable to access Web sites emmploying JAva applets. The following is an email exchange with Jeff Hall of Lowell Observatory, manager of an educational site hosted by Lowell, trying to resolve my problem. The messages are better understood if read in reverse order.
I'm hoping that someone will recognize the source of my problem and can recommmend a solution. I would appreciate any help offered.
Thanks,
Mike Coucke
Hi Jeff:
Well, I guess the problem lies with me somewhere. Here's my answer/status to your questions/suggestions:
1) I'm using MS Windows Me version 4.90.3000
2) I do have the directory C:\Windows\.jpi_cache\jar\, but the only thing in it is an empty folder labeled "1.0". The file LP.jar does not exist anywhere on my hard drive.
3) I tried several game sites that utilized Java applets and got the same results: the Java cup in the upper left corner followed a few seconds later by the red "X". So, evidently the problem is somewhere on my end.
I'm going to post our email exchanges in a Java Users Forum managed by Sun to see if anyone out there can solve my problem. However, if you have any more suggestions, I'll be glad to try them.
Thanks for the help.

Mike,
Rats! What version of Windows are you using? It's a little strange to
see the user directory set to C:\Windows; if you're using XP, I'd expect
it to be something like C:\Documents and Settings\Mike Coucke. In any
event, the output that is of concern is these two lines:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: LPRemote.class
Caused by: java.net.UnknownHostException: proxy
It looks like your browser is not finding our server's IP when it comes
time to download the necessary Java code.
LPRemote.class is the fundamental code that runs LOPARC, and your
browser should be downloading it automatically when you click connect.
LPRemote.class is stored along with a bunch of other classes in a file
called "LP.jar" that you download from our server. So, if you go to C:
in Windows Explorer and do a file search for LP.jar, you should find it.
On my machine, it's stored in a directory called ".jpi_cache\jar" in my
user home directory. Let me know if you have this file, or the
jpi-cache directory.
One other thing you might try is going to a different site that you know
uses Java applets -- I think some of the online game rooms at Yahoo use
Java. See if other sites that use Java load correctly. Then we'll know
if it's our server specifically, or a more general problem on your end.

Hello Jeff:
I still have the Java "blues". I followed your instructions, but am still unable to launch a LOPARC session. After an initial failure, I uninstalled all three Java versions I had (1.4.0, 1.4.1, 1.4.2), then reinstalled 1.4.2_01 from the Sun website.
Now, when I try to launch LOPARC, I initially get a blank window with the Java cup in the upper left corner. After about 20 seconds, the cup changes to a red "X". During those 20 seconds, the following appear in the IE message bar at the bottom of the window: "Applet LPRemote notinited" (their spelling) which changes to "Loading Java Applet Failed..." when the red "X" appears.
Following is a copy of the log from my Java Console during all of this:

Hi Mike,
Try it now. I think this problem has arisen because Sun just
released a new version of the Plug-in (1.4.2), and when we released the
public beta of LOPARC, only one relevant version (1.4.0) was available
and the LOPARC code was written to look for that by default. I have
just recoded the relevant routines so they should now cause your browser
to simply pick up the latest 1.4 version of the Plug-in you have
installed, whatever it is. I "broke" Java on my machine to replicate
your problem, and the code I inserted today did fix it. Hopefully it
will have the same effect for you. I am running IE 6 and plugin
1.4.2_01 (as accessed via Tools->Sun Java Console).
One broader problem: some (non-LOPARC-specific) users on the Sun
forums have reported the "JRE collision" you are seeing when multiple
versions of the Plug-in are installed on the same machine. So if the
fix I made to our code doesn't work, one option would be to uninstall
all Java components from your computer and do a fresh install of the
latest runtime environment.
Let me know how/if this works. Thanks for the feedback and for your
patience.
Best regards,

Hello Jeff:
So far, I have been unable to launch a LOPARC session. I repeatedly
get the following error message:
"Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: LPRemote.class"
My browser is MS Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800.1106 Initially I was
using Java Plug-In version 1.4.1 and received the error message. I went
to the Sun website and downloaded/installed Java Plug-In version 1.4.2
and still get the message.
Before I try to launch LOPARC, I can select Tools->Sun Java Console from
IE's pull down menu to check my Java Plug-In version. When I try to
launch LOPARC, I get the following message:
"Applet(s) in this HTML page requires a version of Java different from
the one the browser is currently using. In order to run the applet(s)

start a new browser session." If I select 'No', I get the following
message: "Java Plug-in detected JRE collission"
If I select 'Yes', a new browser window opens and then I get the first
message above.
Can you help?

Dear Michael Coucke:
Thank you for registering with Lowell Observatory's online education
site. We hope you enjoy using it and visit regularly as we continue to
expand its features and capabilities. This is a one-time welcoming
email.
For your records, your user ID is xxxxx, and your password is #########.
You'll need to supply these each time you log in.
This site gives you access to research-grade equipment including a 16"
telescope, CCD detector, and image processing software. Our online
archive of data is now available 24/7. The telescope will be opening to
our onsite users in May, and on select nights to the Internet at large
in June.
We have designed this site so you don't need a huge monitor or a
supercomputer to use it. All pages are viewable on screens running at
800x600 resolution or higher. To use LOPARC, you'll need a Java-enabled
browser with the Java 1.4 plug-in installed. If you don't have the
plug-in, you'll be prompted to download it the first time you attempt to
connect. This is an admittedly large (9 MB) but one-time-only download.
This site works correctly under Internet Explorer version 5 or higher.
If you use Netscape, you must be running version 6 or higher, and
display or applet behavior anomalies may occur.
If at any time you can't connect to our server, simply try again later.
We do experience several power outages each year, particularly during
Flagstaff's summer thunderstorm season. Our server is fully protected
and backed up, and can be quickly brought back on line, but any active
user sessions will be lost. Thanks for your patience during these
inevitable downtimes.
Your questions, comments, suggestions, and bug reports about this site
are always welcome. On behalf of the LOPARC development team, thanks
for signing up!

Hi Mike,
I see this in your logs:
Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_01
Using JRE version 1.4.2_01 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
User home directory = C:\WINDOWS
Proxy Configuration: Manual Configuration
Proxy: http=proxy,https=proxy,ftp=proxy,gopher=proxy
Proxy Overrides:
I just helped my Dad set up his computer with a new
cable modem, and had the situation where we couldn't
access any secure Web sites. The cable folks had us
disable the proxy. It looks like the error message is
saying it can't find your proxy server, and the logs
you posted say that you've decided to configure your
proxy manually, rather than using the settings from
IE (which is how mine is set up in the plugin
control panel.)
Could that be the problem?

• Taking screenshot with java applet using java robot class not working

Hi Everyone,
I am using the java applet to take screenshot of the web browser using the java's robot class.
Robot objRobot = new Robot ();
BufferedImage objBufferedImage = objRobot.createScreenCapture(objRectArea);
The thing work good in windows system taking screenshot but in case of mac osx i get the blank image. When i check the event viewer in mac osx i get the following error.
invalid context
invalid pixel format
CoreAnimation: rendering error 506
The problem is coming for all the browser safari, firefox and chrome. My applet is signed applet.
What might be the reason. An early reply is very valuable.
My machine configuration is as follows.
OS : MAC OSX
Version : 10.6.4
Is that a system level issue , java plugin issue?I'am confused with this error.
Thanks sagar.

invalid context
invalid pixel formatHm, seems like the Mac implementation of the Robot class is doing some bad initializations there. I can't be a 100% sure of course, but this smells like a bug to me. Are you sure you have the latest version of Java installed?

• Java Applets in Safari

I'm trying to run a Java applet with safari, but everytime I go to the webpage all I get is a grey box with a picture of a coffee cup that has two arrows circling it. Nothing loads after that. Any idea how to fix this?

Hi ad1054,
Are you sure you have java 1.6 and if so, how did you get it? I believe the latest version available from apple is 1.5.0_06. Java 1.6 was only just released by Sun, and, if I'm not mistaken, only for PC and Linux. Apple may be waiting to force people to pay for Leopard to get Java 1.6. (Though you can get a beta version from developer.apple.com.) As Hawaiian_Starman mentioned above, you can check your java version.
That said, you don't have to worry about lower versions of Java because Java is backwards compatible. In fact, if you use Firefox (sorry, but I just checked it in Safari, and got a blank page so I guess Safari, like IE, doesn't support this) and go to "about:plugins" you will see something like

Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.5g2
File name: MRJPlugin.plugin
Runs Java applets using the latest installed versions of Java. For more information: Java Embedding Plugin. Run version test: Test Your JVM.
MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/x-java-vm Embedded JVM xjv Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.1 Embedded Java Applet xja111 Yes
application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.2 Embedded Java Applet xja112 Yes
application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.3 Embedded Java Applet xja113 Yes
application/x-java-applet;version=1.2 Embedded Java Applet xja12 Yes
application/x-java-applet;version=1.2.1 Embedded Java Applet xja121 Yes

application/x-java-applet;version=1.4.2 Embedded Java Applet xja142 Yes
application/x-java-applet;version=1.5 Embedded Java Applet xja15 Yes

You can see from this list that all versions up to and including the currently installed one are supported. The only thing you have to fear is that the applet you are trying to use was compiled with Java 1.6 and is not itself backwards compatible. However, when I made a test applet of this type, I got a red X, and no coffee cup.
If you see the red X, and I think the coffee cup as well, you should be able to right-click (or ctrl-click) the icon. If so, this will give you a menu with "console" and "about" choices. "About" will give you the version of Java you have, and "console" is supposed to show you the errors that kept the applet from working. (However, with my Java 1.6 test, the console was empty.)
I hope this helps.

• What is Java Applet 1.0, and why does it launch when I do an applet action?

When I go to http://www.chemaxon.com/marvin/sketch/index.php with Safari 5.1.7 on MacOS 10.6.8, an applet launches. If I then click and hold on one of the toolbars of this applet and drag to the left, the toolbar is supposed to detach. Instead, my computer launches a program called Java Applet 1.0, and a blank rectangle appears where the toolbar is supposed to be, but no buttons appear in the toolbar. The program Java Applet 1.0 does not appear to have any functions associated with it; if I click on its icon in my dock, the blank toolbar comes to he foreground, but nothing else happens. If I quit Java Applet 1.0, the original applet quits as well. A separate instance of Java Applet 1.0 launches for each browser that I use to go to http://www.chemaxon.com/marvin/sketch/index.php.
So my question is, what is the purpose of Java Applet 1.0? Is Java Applet 1.0 launching because there is a bug in the applet, or is a bug in Java Applet 1.0 causing the applet to misfire?

I don't know this action, specifically, but such a message often means an action step has tried to do an activity that was successfully recorded with an image that has different attributes, e.g., RGB vs Grayscale, or maybe a different bit depth or other modal difference. It's also possible you have a non-image layer selected when you're running the action.

• WebAnalysis/WebAdminServicesConsole very slow (because of java applet)

Hello,
Context: Hyperion System 9.3.1
server1, Windows -> installed Administration Services e BI+ (Workspace, Web Analysis ecc)
server2, AIX -> installed Essbase
The client has externalized the software/hardware so we have:
network A =client's network
network B = Internet Service provider network
network C =network of the society to which client has externalized the hardware
The communication path is: network A -> network B -> network C
server1 and server2 are on network C.
From the client's computers in network A, Web Analysis Studio and Web Administration Services Console (both using java applets)
have very very slow response times. To give you an idea, an blank report in Web Analysis needs 10min to open. With Web Admin Console I can't do anything: in an empty outline, I added 2 dimensions with 1 member each, when I tried 'Save outline' after 20mins of waiting a response the system also freezed.
When I work in remote control directly on server1, Web Analysis studio and Web Admin Console are very very fast.
This happens only with these two components, the other web components not using java applet (Workspace ecc) don't have this problem.
That made me think there is a network issue. But ping and tracert to both servers (1,2) from the client machines gave me positive results.
I don't know what else to test/try.
Any help will be appreciated!
Thank you!
Daniela

Ciao,
It seems Web Analysis works well only with jre 1.5.0 update 11. I had java 1.6.0 update 4. I had disintalled java 1.6.0_4, installed 1.5.0_11 and now web analysis applet won't even load.

• Java applet IO Filepermissions

From what I understand, all a local applet needs to write to a local file is granted permission. I have 2 files. Both are located in the directory "C:\Documents and Settings\Soots\Desktop":

• Calling a Java Applet - Javascript

Hey guys,
I'm still fairly new to Java. I'm having a hard time getting my Applet to run properly.
Basically, this is what I want it to do:
I have a web page with a series of fields on it (a form). I have a submit button. When the user clicks the submit button, it activates a Javascript function in a seperate file that validates ALL of these fields. The validation that it does is merely to determine whether or not the fields are blank.
Once it's accomplished this task, I THEN want it to run a Java applet.
Everything works up until the point at which it runs the Java applet. I'm not sure how exactly I'm supposed to call the applet from Javascript.
In every example of a web page that I see that has an applet, it has something that looks like this:
<APPLET CODE="classname.class >
</APPLET>That's all fine and good, but the problem is that it automatically calls the Applet then. I don't want it to do that. Is there a way that I can CALL the applet at the very end of a JS file? I mean, I don't want anything to load, no grey boxes or any of that stuff until I actually call it..
Any idea?
Thanks!
Todd

dude,
have you managed to call an applet method from firefox?
I'm not sure it is working at all.
I've read few articles and everyone is complaining about the same error:
Error: document.appl01 has no properties
in the case above the applet was called "appl01"
I've tried using
document.applets[0].<the applet method>
and I've got the same result..

• Embedded Java applet no longer works correctly (works is old FFOX, Goggle Crome, etc.)

an embedded Java applet pops up a response box with success or failure on a dbms update. With FFOX(32) 8.x and 9.x running on win7 64, the response box is blank but it should always be either Success or Failed.
This works just fine in older FFox(with XP), Goggle Chrome(win7 64), etc.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Anytime random strange behaviors creep in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

• What's the easiest way to save info from a java applet to use it later?

How can a java applet take info from a user (text, binary, picture, or some other form), and save it (like on my computer), then bring it up when another user views the same applet?

flounder
"Did you try it?
Do you have a file called Stuff.txt?
Does the file contain "Testing outstream"?"
Yes I compiled and ran the code as a Java applet, nothing happened. I was expecting a write error becase java applets are not inally allowed to write to a file. Yes I have file a Stuff.txt in the same directory as the program. No, nothing happened to the file, it stays blank.

"And if you tested it, how did you test it?
(Hint: the code you've shown doesn't need to extend Applet.) "
If it does not extend applet then I get a class cast exception when I try to compile it as an applet.

• Has anyone gotten "Insert HTML" java applet snippet code to work in Adobe Muse?

I am trying to insert some code into a page created with Adobe Muse. The insert HTML code snippet, i'm trying to insert is a java.jar file that plays a virtual tour file for the inside of a home. After inserting and then publishing to Catalyst, when viewed in IE, I get a blank box where the applet is suppose to be and it says error.
Has anyone done something similar and been successful in the past?

I didn't seem to get any answers, but I think I figured out the problem. Business Catalyst does not support setting file permissions on .jar files (Java Applets) and potentially other kinds of files that I needed to get loaded so that's why I got a generic error.
The code snippet, I used, worked when I uploaded the site to another hoster that supports distributing .jar files.
