Java for Instructional software?

Hi,
I wanted to know if Java can be used for instructional software development. The age group targeted is 4-10yrs. By that, I would want rich multimedia content (video, audio and GOOD graphics). I saw the Java showcase - and saw that the graphics there are generated on the fly. What kind of tools will be needed is I have to use Java for this? Is there some kind of API?
Thanks!!

You can start programming Java and do all the things you are talking about with one download. If you go to the J2SE link in the upper left of this page, it will bring you to another page with Information On Specific Versions on the right side. You should probably stick with 1.4.1 because 1.4.2 is beta. You want to download the SDK for your platform.
Now comes the hard part... You have to learn to program Java. There are Tutorials on the left side of the page. You should probably start with The Java Tutorial. Once you get past your first few programs, you might want to get an IDE. Sun Studio is available free. It will help you somewhat with the syntax and libraries. You should also learn how to search this site for info (Advance Search at the top of the page) and look up the API documentation (See APIs on the left of the page)

  • Thinking about switching over to Java for EMAIL software I wrote

    Hi...
I am the current author of a unique EMAIL client/server program for the old MS-DOS operating system called D'Bridge. It is from the BBS days of Fidonet and I've recently began recoding some elements of the program to facilitate Internet support and whatnot. D'Bridge is over 20 years old and is written half in Borland Pascal 5.5 and half in Visual BASIC for DOS.
After careful thinking (and one of those "wouldn't it be cool?" thoughts), I'm thinking of rewriting the entire code in JAVA to have a platform independant solution. I would like to write a "server" edition which would serve Web, POP3/SMTP, FTP and Telnet users in addition to legacy Fidonet support via. traditional dialup modem lines. I would then like to write a "client" edition which would be totally slimmed-down to run on PDA's such as Palm OS or Windows CE.
I generally am new to the language but I'm going to take an entire printout of my current work and then go step-by-step into an OOP transition - D'Bridge was obviously written before the days of OOP and therefore makes heavy use of global variables, assembly language and other elements. Nearly half of the code is entirely devoted to controlling the menu system and screen elements - you could say that I'd like to use Java to concentrate more on what D'Bridge does instead of what it looks like. :-)
I guess I'm looking for any advice, feedback, criticism, encouragement, words of wisdom, whatever you want to call it. After studying the fundimentals of the language, I believe I can make the transition but need to know from you guys if a full-blown server package is possible - because thats what my DOS application is doing now, with a loyal and dedicated fan club that just loves it.
    Nick

but need to know from you guys if a full-blown server
    package is possible Yes.
JBoss and Tomcat are two free frameworks that exist solely to act as servers to support different parts of the documented J2EE API.
There are commercial versions that support the same framework as well as other types of solutions including forum software (like this site), middleware, message systems, Network Management Systems, etc.
And those are just the ones that I know about (and which I have implemented commercial solutions as well.)

  • How to disable Next Generation Java Plug-in for GPO software deployments?

Is there a way to disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in using a script or batch file for GPO software deployments?
Our group needs to deploy JRE 6 Update 20 to a large number of Oracle Financials users. As part of this deployment, we need to disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in as part of the installation for each desktop. Our plan is to extract the MSI installer package from Sun and create a GPO for software deployment.
It seems you cannot disable the Next Generation Java Plug-in using a simple registry hack or customized MST transform file. Is there another method for disabling Next Generation Java Plug-in?

    btenney,
Thanks very much for your suggestion. Can you explain what the parameters are on the ssvagent.exe that you noted -high -jpisetup -old? I can't seem to find any information on the parameters. Also, will this set the configuration just for the user logged on (current user) OR for all users existing and future?
We are having trouble getting next-gen java shut off for all possible users that may logon to a machine in future .. thus looking at putting in bootup login script, but hoping there is a better way to have it take affect at the machine level. Or to at least automate at the user level (existing and future windows users/profiles)

  • Software update 14 Java for Mac 10.6.8 gave me 27 permissions errorsI found 29 permissions errors.Disk Utility and Onyx cannot repair.

first time I contact Apple Support Communities
I have re-installed Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro(permissions = ok) and each Software update proposed by Apple.
After each software update installation, I have checked the permissions being ok.
But after install update 14 Java for Mac OS X 10.6.8 (proposed by Apple), I found 27 permissions errors. Disk Utility as well as Onyx cannot repair. (in fact they repair and if you check again you still have those 27 permissions errors)
It concern mainly System/library/Java/Java Virtual Machine  +  System/Library/Framewoks/JavaVM.Framework  and System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.Bundle
Do you have an idea how to get rid of those 27 permissions errors.
    Thanks in advance

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
    drwxrwxrwx
    d = directory
    r = read
    w = write
    x = executeable program

  • Software Update Java for OSX 2012-2

Just got this tonight when Apple offered it in a Software Update check.  I got the Java for OSX 2012-1 a couple of days ago.  I can't find any info on what changed.  Anyone else get an explanation?

If you have Java installed on your system then I would highly recommend you keep it well up-to-date, and apply all the latest updates that are available for it. The latest Flashback malware threats have been using Java vulnerabilities to infect Mac systems with unpatched versions of Java.
Do keep in mind that it is not very likely you will run across the malware, but there is a chance out there. It has been speculated to have infected ~600,000 systems, and at an estimate of ~150 million Mac systems worldwide that's about 0.004%, or 1 in every 250 systems. This total is just a guestimate on my part.

  • I can't update java for software 10.6.8

I have a MacBook Pro and I have recently noticed that my Java is out of date so I cannot stream anything on my computer.
Java is telling me that it only has an update for 10.7 and newer software and to contact apple.
    What are my options?
I would prefer not to update the software as I have briefly read that it is quite a major software upgrade and previous programs will not work with a new software upgrades. Is there any patches or ways around this without an upgrade?
    Thanks in Advance.
    Seana

You can check the Java version you have by opening Terminal (in Applications/Utilities) and typing
    java -version
(don't type anything else). The highest version for Snow Leopard is 'build 1.6.0-65'. If you have a lower one than that you should be able to install it from Software Update in the Apple Menu or from this Apple page:
Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 17

  • Java for OS X 2013-001    is not proposed by automatic software update

    Hi
As I checked for the new update that apple provides on Feb, 19th : Java for OS X 2013-001
it is not  listed by the available updates for my Mac.
Should I install this update after having  downloaded it on Apple support web site, or not?
Does this update install the Java soft if we do not have it already
or does it simply disables the famous Java SE 6 applet plug-in?
How can I check if I have the plug-in already or not ?
    Thanks for your help.
    (I'm having a mid-2012 MB-Pro Retina 15", running mountain Lion)

If you don't have it already installed, it will not update it.

It updates it if you already have Java SE 6 installed. It also temporarily disables the plug-in so that it won't run automatically, but will allow you to re-enable it.

    My photoshop cs6 crashes.

You shouldn't need java for photoshop cs6 to work on mac os x 10.10.2
(some of the other cs6 creative suite applications like illustrator do though i believe)
This is the java you would need

Can you post the crash report for photoshop cs6?

  • Java Update 5 (1.0) breaks Java for Volano based chats

I installed the Java Update 5 (1.0) for Leopard on my Intel based Mac mini and then was unable to enter Volano (Java applet) based chat rooms. I was forced to reinstall my system to revert to my prior version of System 10.5.8 in oder to be able to continue use the Java based Volano chats. The update that will NOT work states: "This release updates Java SE 6 to to version 1.6.0_1.5, J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_20, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_22."
    According to Volano developers -
Note that Apple calls Java 5 (version 1.5) "J2SE 5.0", while it calls Java 6 (version 1.6) "Java SE 6". I think I finally have the following chart correct:
    J2SE 5.0 = Java 5 (version 1.5)
    - Available as 32-bit and 64-bit packages in Leopard
    - Removed in Snow Leopard
    Java SE 6 = Java 6 (version 1.6)
    - Available only as 64-bit packages in Leopard
    - Available as 32-bit & 64-bit packages in Snow Leopard
In Leopard, the 32-bit Safari can run Java applets only with the 32-bit
J2SE 5.0 support. To run applets using Java SE 6, you need to bypass
Safari using the "appletviewer" Terminal command in Leopard, or upgrade
to Snow Leopard where Safari can run Java SE 6.
Volano says the possible work arounds for Leopard users (10.5.8( are:
According to what I've read, if you have a 64-bit capable Intel processor (i.e., an Intel Core 2 Duo), the software update that you removed should have given you 64-bit Java SE 6 even on Mac OS X Leopard (10.5). Java SE 6 works fine with the VOLANO applets, but unfortunately the Safari browser that runs the applets is only 32-bit on Leopard, so applets in Safari still run with the 32-bit Java SE 5 instead of the 64-bit Java SE 6.
So you have three options to solve the problem -- two free options (one rather easy, one more difficult), and one easy non-free option.
    (1) The Free and Relatively Easy Option
If you have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (not a Core Solo or Core Duo), you can install all the software updates from Apple so that you'll have the 64-bit Java SE 6.
About Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2733 "Java SE 6 is available on 64-bit, Intel-based Macs only."
You would then modify your Java Preferences so that Java SE 6 is chosen first for the Java Application Runtime settings. You can verify the modified setting by running the following "java -version" command from the Terminal application (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal):
    $ java -version
    java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02-279-10M3065)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.3-b01-279, mixed mode)
There are some more detailed instructions here:
Install Java 6 on Mac OS X Leopard
    http://gephi.org/users/install-java-6-mac-os-x-leopard/
Then you can bypass Safari and run the applet directly in the 64-bit Java SE 6 using the "appletviewer" command in Terminal. For example:
    $ appletviewer http://www.actionchat.com/chat/english.shtml
You just put the URL of the page containing the VOLANO chat applet you want to load. I just tried it on my system, and it works fine. You bypass Java SE 5, which is broken for the VOLANO applets, and you bypass Safari, which cannot run the 64-bit Java SE 6. Instead, you run the VOLANO applet using your Java SE 6 directly!
    (2) The Free and Not-So-Easy Option
You can download and install SoyLatte as an alternative to the Apple Java VM for your Mac OS X Leopard system.
SoyLatte: Java 6 Port for Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 (Intel)
    http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/
I have not tried SoyLatte on my iMac, though.
    (3) The Best but Non-Free Option
For only $29, you can upgrade your system to the latest Snow Leopard and get both the 32-bit and 64-bit Java SE 6 along with a Safari Web browser that works with Java SE 6 for running applets!
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MACOS_XSNGL
I hope this information is of help to any Leopard users having trouble with the latest Java update.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
Please bear in mind that this issue, presumably introduced by Apple's own update, affects not only the command line java interpreter but any other app that depends on Java (including some GUI apps). So it perhaps fits the larger scope of Leopard instead of the Unix area.

  • Possible Java for OS X 2013-005 malware on my MBP?

Hello all, so I was looking for some android file transfer software for my MBP (running maverick OS) the other day and I got a pop up asking me to install java. One of the apps had said it was cloud based, so i figured the java went with it. It prompted me to install Java for OS X 2013-005. I did so.
Afterwards I had heard that Java is not good to have on macs due to vulnerabilities. So i looked into uninstalling it.
I found a way using terminal with sudo rm -fr /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and also a way where I search for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and delete that.
I tried to do both and did not find java....this worried me. I also saw that the latest version of Java is Java for OS X 2014....So I was wondering why it asked me to install an older version....
Did I somehow install malware on my mac? And if so, how do I check and get rid of it?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
    [Process completed]
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • HT1222 The update "Java for OS X 2012-006" can't be installed

Hello - When updating software I get the following message:  The update "Java for OS X 2012-006" can't be installed.  You don't have permission.  I am using the admin user on this computer.  Any ideas?  I have problems in the past and had to clear cache - could this have caused some permission issues?
    Thank you!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Scheduling specific time of day for automatic software updates

How can one schedule a specific time of day (i.e. between 11:01 pm to 5.59 am when I have unlimited download availability) for an iMac to search for automatic software updates? System preferences only offer frequency, but no time option. If it is possible to schedule a specific time, will invoking the feature override the sleep function, wake up the machine and perform the software update and then let the machine go back to "sleep?" Thank you for all your help.

to clarify barney's suggestion, the following terminal command will download all available updates and put them in your Downloads folder.
    softwareupdate -d --all
so what you need to do is this.
    1. turn off automatic software update in software update system preferences.
    2. make a cron or a launch daemon to run the above terminal command periodically at the time of your choosing. to make a launch daemon I recommend using lingon http://tuppis.com/lingon/
The daemon will only run if the computer is not asleep at the scheduled time so you might want to set to to wake/start shortly before that. this is done in system preferences->energy saver->schedule.
to install the updates once they are downloaded double-click on the pkg files and follow the instructions.

  • HT5717 Our company had to remove this Java for OS  2013-004 upgrade because it broke all of our Java installers. Does anyone know when Apple will solve this new problem?

    Hi,
People at our company installed the latest Java for OSX 2013-004 1.0 Apple Update and all of our software installers failed to run anymore. The only way to kill the installer was Apple Menu -> Force Quit after that. We all had to downgrade to Java for OSX 2013-003 to work.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I have heard problems with that update. Unfortunately, we don't know when an update will be available. Apple often releases Java updates at the same time as Oracle, but we don't know more things

  • HT4884 java for 10.6.8 is not working

my iMac says all software is up to date but websites that need java still say that i need to update to the latest version of java.

For OS 10.6.8, I found the latest Java update didn't work right, either. I restored full functionality by reinstalling Snow Leopard from the DVD, then updating to 10.6.8, plus updating Safari, etc, BUT NOT JAVA. Java works fine as long as you don't go too far with the updates: make sure they say they're for 10.6.x .
I think the problems begin with update 11, which seems to be tailored for OS 10.7 Lion and higher, but the installer doesn't check what OS you have before updating, nor is there any warning before you click install.

I have an HP Officejet J4680 All-in-One, and have been printing wirelessly from my Macintosh (OS 10.5.7) since I purchased the printer in December 2008. However, after I installed the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4, I suddenly lost the ability to print wirelessly. I've spent hours on my own and on the phone with HP trying to figure this out, with no success. When I uninstall and reinstall the printer, I can get to the point in the HP Setup Assistant in which the network configuration has been successfully downloaded to the printer (I see an IP address, Subnet Mask, etc.), but then I get an error message of "Device Not Reachable . . . please make sure that your Mac has access to the network and retry." My Mac does have access to the network because I can get on the internet wirelessly.
I've tried entering the IP address manually, etc.--but nothing has worked. It's as if the printer is on the network, and the computer is on the same network, but they somehow can't talk to each other. Anyone else notice this problem, and how do I solve it?? Thanks in advance for your time!

Hello Laura C. I haven't noticed any problems with my wireless connections to my Canon printers, at home or at work, and I have the Update 4 installed. I also cannot think how this update would have impacted your ability to connect to the printer, except maybe due to a reliance of the HP software using Java to operate. But this should not have stopped your existing connection from working, only a new connection...
Apologies in advance if you have already been through the following, but if you were successful in entering an IP address manually, I would then check that you can get a response from the printer. The best tool to use is Ping. Open Applications > Utilities > Network Utility. Here you will see the Ping tab, as well as several other IP tools.
Before you select Ping, select Info (it probably has defaulted to this). This pane shows you the current IP address settings for your Mac. Since you are using wireless, change the drop menu from en0 (which is Ethernet) to en1 (wireless). This will show your current IP address set in the Mac. Make a note of this.
Now select the Ping tab and enter the IP address of the HP. Change the number of pings to 4 and press the Ping button. If the addresses are correct and the network infrastructure working you should get a response. If you get something like " 4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss", then that would explain the unreachable message.
The biggest cause of this symptom is subnetting. To explain further, an IP address consists of two parts, the subnet and network address. The subnet is determined by the subnet mask. If you have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the your subnet is the first three sets of numbers in your IP address and the network address is the last number. For example, an IP address of 10.0.1.10 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 has a subnet of 10.0.1 and a network address of 10. For devices to communicate on a local network, they typically need to have the same subnet and a different network address. Can you confirm the subnets for the Mac and printer are the same and the network addresses are different.
If you get responses to the Pings, which indicates the IP addressing is okay, the other services like firewalls can stop some printer utilities from working correctly. Have you checked your System Preferences > Security > Firewall setting is set to allow all incoming connections?
