Java.policy code delays JVM loading

Hello All!!
My java.policy code has 46 grant lines due to different permissions of different applets and servers.
When I want to run some of this applets I've a delay of 90 seconds to load the JVM.
I think I'm verifying that exist all of my servers in java.policy because i've a very high delay, but I think it wouldn't be that way.
My questions are: will do I encrease the delay if I encrease the number of applets or servers? I'm working with JDK1.3, does anybody knows if this verssion is limited?

Nowhere. Use the -Xbootclasspath option of 'java'.

  • Attach java imported codes to jvm pool process

    Hi,
    we are using oracle forms 10gR2, here is my forms version :
    Forms [32 Bit] Version 10.1.2.0.2 (Production)
    also my server version is 10.1.2.0.2.
    we imported some java codes and create a new jvm controller myjvm at jvmcontrollers.cfg.
    we set jvmcontroller=myjvm at sections of formsweb.cfg...
    after all we started jvm with enterprise manager console.
    in spite of these changes any of forms sessions using imported code did not attach to myjvm. we did not see it either at log file or at enterprise manager metrics.
    is there something we are missing?
    Regards, Engin.

    hi,
    we found a workaround by opening a tar.
    using jvmcontroller=myjvm as parameter at formsweb.cfg does not work.
    to make it available we need to add it to otherparams.
    otherparams=jvmcontroller=myjvm

  • Java takes too long to load if java.policy has many grants to http URLs

    I am facing a nasty issue with trying to secure the Java browser plugin using the java.policy file. Some jars cause the JVM to stall for a time that is directly proportional to the size of the java.policy file.
    The entries inside our java.policy look like this:
    *grant codeBase "http://some.site.local:port/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; };*
    The more entries I add to this file, the slower the performance gets (as of java loading time). Using -Djava.security.debug=all I found that the timeout is 4.5 seconds for every grant in the java.policy. The log output just before the delay looks like this:
    policy: evaluate codesources:
    Policy CodeSource: (http://some.site.local:port/- <no signer certificates>)
    *Active CodeSource: (http://wassup/wassup.jar [*
    The http://wassup/wassup.jar is a signed test jar I installed on a local web server.
    This old thread suggests this is a DNS/Netbios lookup timeout. However, Wireshark does not show any such traffic. Our DNS server does reply quickly, both on failure and success. http://192.9.162.102/thread.jspa?threadID=5250986&messageID=10039588
    When I use the remote http://mindprod.com/applet/wassup.html there is no delay. The only difference I can see is that the remote JAR is always loaded via http, while the local jar is cached. Remote jar:
    *network: Cache entry not found [url: http://mindprod.com/applet/wassup.jar, version: null]*
    network: Connecting http://mindprod.com/applet/wassup.jar with proxy=HTTP @ proxy.company.local/10.10.1.2:8080
    network: Downloading resource: http://mindprod.com/applet/wassup.jar
    Content-Length: 19.804
    Content-Encoding: null
    Local jar:
    network: Connecting http://wassup/wassup.jar with proxy=DIRECT
    network: Connecting http://wassup:80/ with proxy=DIRECT
    network: ResponseCode for http://wassup/wassup.jar : 304
    network: Encoding for http://wassup/wassup.jar : null
    network: Disconnect connection to http://wassup/wassup.jar
    cache: Reading Signers from 1218 http://wassup/wassup.jar | C:\Program Files\Java\JrejCache\6.0\53\bd564b5-14aba644.idx
    cache:  Read manifest for http://wassup/wassup.jar: read=691 full=691
    I am using 1.6.0u22 at the moment. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

    Try putting the domain names in the Windows hosts files with their numeric addresses. That should bypass any DNS lookup. If you have central maintenance you can update all the hosts files when IP address change.
    We have considered this option, but then we have the same problem described on c). IP maintentance. IPs change often and we cannot control it.
    Malcolmmc, paul.miner, jschell,
    I think the problem is Netbios resolution, rather than DNS one. The sites that figure on java.policy file, are not available in terms of Netbios (they are not LAN clients), so they are only visibles on DNS resolution. But Java still tries to resolve them with Netbios first, so I think there's a timeout on this resolution (not the DNS one) . This timeout causes the problem.
    But, anyway .... Why is Java trying to resolve those names ??? In fact, Java will only have to match the site you are visiting with the site specified on java.policy (just a String comparison). Why does Java need to resolve (netbios & dns) the names on java.policy? I cannot figure out why.
    Thank you all.

  • Java takes too long to load if java.policy has many sites to grant acess to

    The problem is that we noticed that the time Java takes to load when it's invoked by any applet from the very first time on IE, is directly proportional to the size of the java.policy file.
    You can have many sites to grant access to inside your java.policy file. As you know, it's typically done like this:
    grant codeBase "http://<url>/<dir>/*" {
         permission java.security.AllPermission;
    The more entries I add to this file, the slower the performance gets (as of java loading time).
    We have more than 10 entries on our java.policy file, and we are getting a 40-seconds penalty time each time java is loading.
    Having gone further with this problem, we have discovered that time is being lost when Java is trying to resolve (netBios and DNS) ALL of the sites specified on the java.policy file, BEFORE running any applet of ANY site (when Java loads). We cannot understand why Java is trying to resolve those names, even though you are not trying to visit them....
    Is there a workaround for this issue ?
    We've tried to:
    a) Use IP's instead of names on the java.policy: this resolves the problem but it creates another one: IP maintenance. It's not applicable because IP's can change without notice.
    b) Use more patterns like "*", for example:
    grant codeBase "http://*mysit*/<dir>/*" {
    so that Java will not be able to "guess" the name, nor resolve it.
    But unfortunately, this didn't work :-(
    c) Include the java.policy file on each applet (inside the jar file), instead of an unique java.policy file on each Windows machine. This solution doesn't fit our requirements, because we cannot ask applications to manage their own permissions. We want to control them with an unique & protected & secured java.policy file.
    d) Sign applets: Same reason of c)
    Is there a workaround for this issue ?
    We need Java to load in few seconds, but mantain java.policy funcionality.
    Thank you.
    Marc.

  • How do I run multiple java apps in one JVM to reduce memory use?

    Hi all,
    I saw an article either on the web or in a magazine not too long ago about how to "detect" if the app is already running, and if so, it hands off the new instance to the already running JVM, which then creates a thread to run the Java app in. As it turns out, my app will be used in an ASP environment, through Citrix. We may have as many as 50 to 100 users running the same app, each with their own unique user ID, but all using the same one server to run it on. Each instance eats up 25MB of memory right now. So the question is if anybody knows of a URL or an app like this that can handle the process of running the same (or even different Java) apps in one JVM as separate threads, instead of requring several instances of the JVM to run? I know this article presented a fully working example, and I believe I know enough to do it but I wanted ot use the article as a reference to make sure it is done right. I know that each app basically would use the same one "launcher" program that would on first launch "listen" to a port, as well as send a message through the port to see if an existing launcher was running. If it does, it hands off the Java app to be run to the existing luancher application and shuts down the 2nd launching app. By using this method, the JVM eats up its normal memory, but each Java app only consumes its necessary memory as well and doesn't use up more JVM instance memory.
    Thanks.

    first of all, if i wrote in the java.policy file
    grant {

    But I have not the intention to open the gates for any applet out there, so i want to limit the access to my applet. With every of the following versions I get at best an

    I read the mentioned documentation and your right, some of my versions were wrong, but after reading the doumentation again i came to following result which should had worked but didn't.
    java.policy
    grant codeBase "http://admin.mydomain.com/*" {
      permission java.security.AllPermission;
    HTML File
    <applet codebase="http://admin.mydomain.com/" name="shortcut" code="start.class" archive="applet.jar" height="0" width="0"></applet>if I am entering http://admin.mydomain.com/applet.jar i can download the jar, so the archive lays in the correct directory.
    what i am doing wrong? do i have to change an additional file somewhere else?

  • ClassLoader & java.policy

    Hi ,
    I am facing problem with the following code.
    ClassLoader loaderPrev = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader();
    ClassLoader loader = URLClassLoader.newInstance(new URL[]{new URL(CodeBase)} , loaderPrev );
    ClassLoader loader = new URLClassLoader(urlList);
    Thread.currentThread().setContextClassLoader(loader) ;
    result = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader().loadClass(className);
    This loads class successfully if I give "AllPermision" in my java.policy. But in real project I cann't do this. If I give only the http port in the java.policy file, it doesn't work . It gives socket permission denied exception.
    I appreciate if somebody can give some input on this.

  • Java Applets and .java.policy

    Hi.
    We are developing an applet that need to access to the file systems and anothers properties, like user.home. To do this and don't modify the java.policy of the jre, we create a .java.policy file into user home. The content is:
    grant {
    permission java.util.PropertyPermission "user.name", "read";
    permission java.util.PropertyPermission "user.home", "read, write";
    permission java.util.PropertyPermission "java.library.path", "read, write";
    permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "accessClassInPackage.org.mozilla.jss.*";
    permission java.io.FilePermission "${user.home}/", "read";
    permission java.io.FilePermission "${user.home}/-", "read, write";
    With this configuration it works fine in Linux with Iceweasel, but in windows it's not work (firefox nor internet explorer)!.
    The error is:

    When we modify the .java.policy file with permission java.security.AllPermission it work fine too, and this make to us think that this is a permission problem!.
    Somebody has an idea???
    Sorry for my english!

    Having to modify the policy file defeats the whole point of using applets in the first place. If you have to install anything (such as a new policy file) on the client machine, you may as well install a GUI program.
    Either get yourself a digital certificate and sign the applet, or use an independent program instead.

  • Explicitly installin java.policy problem

    is there any one who knows how to explicitly install the java.policy. What i have been doing is set the policy of the RMI server through a file like java.policy which contains this
    grant {
    permission java.security.AllPermission
    "*:1024-65535","connect,accept,resolve";
    and run the server through a batch file where the java.policy file is loaded through the system. is there anyone who knows to load the policy in the server code itself, that is, installing it explicitly?
    thanks..

    Yes, this is true ...but there is a saying about hardcode ...it makes things hard to code. Hardcoding the policy file eliminates flexibility for your clients and makes things harder to deploy. It certainly breaks from the standard. I just wouldn't want the poster to think one way is just as good as the other. But you do have a choice, this is true.

  • Java.policy codebase ignored

    I've recently been trying to allow an applet on a local webpage to write to a file in the same folder. I've been using the following .java.policy file:
    grant codeBase "file:${user.home}/My Documents/folder/*" {
      permission java.io.FilePermission "${user.home}${/}My Documents${/}folder${/}*", "read,write";
    };The HTML is in the folder called "folder" as above. So is the JAR file for the applet. In the HTML is:
    <applet code="foo.class" archive="foo.jar"></applet>The applet implements a "load" function and a "save" function, which are called like:
    data=document.applets[0].load(filename);
    document.applets[0].save(filename,data);Everything works perfectly using Opera, but fails in IE and Firefox unless I remove the codebase from the grant, leaving just a universal "grant {".
    I'm using 1.5.0_06. I've tried other codeBase values such as "file:C:/-", "file:///C:/-", "file:C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/-", and similar variations (too many to list). I've also tried adding a codebase attribute to the applet tag with the value "file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/My%20Documents/folder/" (value derived from document.location).
    Is there some way to limit granting of permissions to applets in a particular folder that works in all browsers? I know Opera bypasses the Java plugin to access the runtime directly, hence my feeling this is a plugin bug.
    Thanks in advance for any help.

    OK,
    Let's say I have to intialize Environment, and call method initEnvironment() in Applet's init(). Environment class:
    class Environment
         private KeyStore keyStore;
         private Enumeration<String> aliases;
         public void initEnvironment() {
              Security.addProvider(new sun.security.mscapi.SunMSCAPI());
              keyStore = KeyStore.getInstance("Windows-MY");
              keyStore.load(null);
              aliases = keyStore.aliases();
    }Applet is signed, I trust signer.
    Since Applet is signed I'm able to overwrite existing .java.policy under user.home.
    This doesn't work if I don't have .java.policy:
    grant {
      permission java.security.SecurityPermission "insertProvider.SunMSCAPI";
      permission java.security.SecurityPermission "authProvider.SunMSCAPI";
      permission java.util.PropertyPermission "jsr105Provider", "read";
      permission java.util.PropertyPermission "com.sun.xml.internal.ws.api.pipe.Fiber.serialize", "read";
      permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "setContextClassLoader";
      permission java.util.PropertyPermission "com.sun.xml.internal.ws.api.streaming.XMLStreamWriterFactory.noPool", "read";
      permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "accessDeclaredMembers";
      permission java.lang.reflect.ReflectPermission "suppressAccessChecks";
      permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "accessClassInPackage.com.sun.xml.internal.ws.fault";
      permission java.util.PropertyPermission "com.sun.xml.internal.ws.api.streaming.XMLStreamWriterFactory.woodstox", "read";
    };P.S.
    Does it make sense to be able to make changes to file system and not be able to make actions from above policy?!?!

  • Ssl_accetp failed when java visual machine tries to load jar file

    my web server uses openssl to implement https protocol .
    my webpage contains a jar file.( "archive=droptext.jar")
    JVM failed to load this jar from web server (using https protocol).
    because Server failed to make a ssl connection after a ssl_accept failed error .(the function "SSL_accept (ssl)" failed)
    if I use class file instead of jar file. JVM can successfully make a connection with server and load the class file.
    I have no choice but to use jar file because the applet contains more than one class file.

    >

  • How can I change java.policy at runtim on client machines using java webst?

    Hi,
    I have to change java.policy to launch my application through webstart to provide one RuntimePermission "permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "getClassLoader";"
    Its because of a bug in java bug "_http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4809366_"
    So, my problem here is, how can I do this dynamically on each client machine's java.policy.
    I have spent time on this and found some alternatives
    1. Specifying an Additional Policy File at Runtime by launching application "java -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=someURL SomeApp"
    Please refer more on this "http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/security/PolicyFiles.html"
    But, here the problem is, how can I do this using webstart (expert.jnlp) file even though I have the "java-vm-args" tag, its not supporting this argument.
    Please refer "http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/javaws/developersguide/syntax.html#security";
    2. Implementing the Policy in code.
    But, not sure how to do this..
    How can I grant the runtime permission on every user's machine dynamycally?
    Here are some background details on this:
    I am using java6 and weblogic 10.3.3.
    Here is thing that I tried,
    My application downloads a few jars to the client machines using java webstart and then it will get the initial context using the t3 protocal. The jars include wlclient.jar and ojdbc6.jar initially.
    The problem here I was facing, when I tried request a bean, it is giving me the following exception in the client logs.It is requesting one state less session bean and I checked the server logs as well and the bean has returned the expected values properly.
    But here I observed one more thing, before this request, one session bean(state less) has been requested successfully.

    I have tried one more thing, I have taken all the required jars to one of the client machines and executed the main class (by setting the required class path) from cmd using java instead of javaws. Surprisingly, its working fine with out any problem using the wlthint3client.jar.
    I also tried the same, by placing wlclient.jar using java in the same way(from cmd instead of javaws ), but I was facing the same exception while requesting the second session bean and found the same above exception in client logs.
    To resolve this, I come across the java bug that I have given earlier "_http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4809366_".
    In that page, I found a work around for this; suggested by bea to add the Runtime permission "permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "getClassLoader";" to the clients java.policy
    So, please suggest me a way to resolve this problem.
    Please suggest me if you have any other solutions for this problem.
    Thanks in advance :)

    I still think your problem is nothing to do with that ancient non-bug and that you should be looking elsewhere. You might be lucky and find someone here who can say "Ah, I know what that is" but I doubt it because since Oracle took over Sun this site has gone down hill big time.

  • How to read the Java source code (in Netbeans)

    I use OS X10.5.5, NetBeans 6.1 and JSE 6 on a 64 bit mac.
    When I downloaded NB6.1 it had JSE 5 as it's default (and only) java platform. I ran Software Update to get Java 6 from Apple, used the Java Prefrences utitlity to set JSE6 as default. In NB I added the JDK6 platform, registered the JDK6 javadocs and noticed that I also have the option of registering the Java source code.
    I have three questions:
    1) How do I make JDK6 the default in NetBeans. The JDK5 keeps being default after I did the steps above and I don't see anywhere to change that.
    2) How do I read the Java 6 source code? I can see sun provides [source code| http://download.java.net/jdk6/] for their supported platforms. I dont see Apple doing the same for its JDK port. What would I need to do to get to read the java SE6 sources? or is it actually hiding somewhere in the /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home hierarchy?
    3) Where does the JVM look for the binary code to run when I make a call to, say java.util.ArrayList or any other library. In my naivety I would have assumed it would be a .class file somewhere in the java Home folder, but I don't see anything like it.
    thanks in advance,
    chris

    This is taken from the help included with netbeans. In response to question 1.
    By default, the IDE uses the version of the Java SE platform (JDK) with which the IDE runs as the default Java platform
    for compilation, execution, and debugging. You can view your IDE's JDK version by choosing Help > About and clicking the
    Detail tab. The JDK version is listed in the Java field.
    You can run the IDE with a different JDK version by starting the IDE with the --jdkhome jdk-home-dir switch on the command line
    or in your IDE-HOME/etc/netbeans.conf file. For more information, see IDE Startup Parameters.
    In the IDE, you can register multiple Java platforms and attach Javadoc and source code to each platform. For example, if you
    want to work with the new features introduced in JDK 5.0, you would either run the IDE on JDK 5.0 or register JDK 5.0 as a
    platform and attach the source code and Javadoc to the platform.
    In  , you can switch the target JDK in the Project Properties dialog box. In  , you have to set the target JDK in the Ant script itself,
    then specify the source/binary format in the Project Properties dialog box.
    To register a new Java platform:
    Choose Tools > Java Platforms from the main window.
    Click New Platform and select the directory that contains the Java platform. Java platform directories are marked with a
    in the file chooser.
    Use the Sources and Javadoc tabs to attach Javadoc documentation and source code for debugging to the platform.
    Click Close.
    To set the default Java platform for a standard project:
    Right-click the project's root node in the Projects window and choose Properties.
    In the Project Properties dialog box, select the Libraries node in the left pane.
    Choose the desired Java platform in the Java Platform combo box.
    Switching the target JDK for a standard project does the following:
    Offers the new target JDK's classes for code completion.
    If available, displays the target JDK's source code and Javadoc documentation.
    Uses the target JDK's executables (javac and java) to compile and execute your application.
    Compiles your source code against the target JDK's libraries.
    If you want to register additional Java platforms with the IDE, you can do so by clicking the Manage Platforms button.
    Then click the Add Platform button and navigate to the desired platform.
    To set the target Java platform for a free-form project:
    In your Ant script, set the target JDK as desired in the javac, java, and javadoc tasks.
    Right-click the project's root node in the Projects window and choose Properties.
    In the Sources panel, set the level of JDK you want your application to be run on in the Source/Binary Format combo box.
    When you access Javadoc or source code for JDK classes, the IDE searches the Java platforms registered in the
    Java Platform Manager for a platform with a matching version number. If no matching platform is found, the IDE's default platform is used instead.
