Java.sql functions hanging for 60 seconds

I have an Oracle 8.1.6 application on Solaris with Tomcat 3.1 using JDBC to talk to the database. I am using the thin driver for JDK 1.2.2. I moved a box from development to production and changed the network information in the database and in Solaris. Now I have strange behavior where about 5% of the time functions such as Connection.prepareStatement, ResultSet.close, and PreparedStatement.close will sleep for 60 seconds. Then they proceed as normal. It is always 60 seconds, never a hard deadlock. The application is multithreaded, being inside Tomcat and all. The other strange behavior is that when another thread accesses the database, the first thread that was sleeping will wake up and proceed as normal. I will try to switch to the OCI driver, but I think it is very strange that the thread hangs for exactly 60 seconds inside the calls to the JDBC driver. The other 95% of the time it works great.

We switched the driver to OCI instead of thin. It looks like it is working OK now. I suppose it was some strange behavior in the thin driver.

    Is anyone aware of any issues with SQL Developer hanging for several minutes after being idle for several hours? After being idle for several hours (and probably minimized), when we bring up SQL Developer we just get a blank white window for several minutes before it becomes functional. Obviously, this isn't a critical issue, but sure is annoying when you run into it.

    This is fairly typical java application behaviour. For whatever reason, they are particularly prone to being swapped out by the operating system and take time to swap back in.
    There is an add-in around called "keepresident" which helps this but I thought it had been superceded in later JDK version.

    In Data quality there is no inbuild function for converting hijri date to gregorian date .  we have the function for converting julian date to gregorian date.

  • LabVIEW ofter hangs for seconds after save, run command, creating variables, etc.

    Dear users,
    my LabVIEW installation often hangs after common commands such as Save, Run, after creating variables (the label is draw directly, then after few seconds the variable and the wire is created), etc.
    LabVIEW 14.01f (32bit)
    Windows 7 64bit
    The same version of LabVIEW on Windows 7 on other computers runs smoothly. Only that particular super-new and high-performance Lenovo laptop drives everybody in the team crazy.
    Any suggestions, what should I check, please?

    Other reasons for such delays can be network drives that are currently disconnected or point to resources not currently available on the network. Or installed printers pointing to printers not currently available. And last but not least system drives that are trashed with large amounts of files in important system locations.
    While the first reasons can be fixed by removing such drives and printers altogheter, the last point only really is fixable by a clean reinstallation of Windows. And no it's not just LabVIEW that usually gets affacted but just about any application when accessing the file system, for instance very noticable when opening the file select dialog in any application.

  • Java.sql.Statement hangs

    I'm having trouble executing the following statement. It never moves past execute(String sql)

    whereas the following line executes perfectly

    The statement that fails with Statement.execute works in sqlplus.
    Anybody have any ideas?

    The app prints 1, 2, and 3, but hangs on the second execute and never gets to 4. No exception, no stack trace. It doesn't terminate. It just sits there.

    Do you have an idea of how I can test it ?Well you can time a select query and afterwards set the timeout interval to a value less than the time of the query. Start the same query and check the results.

    We're implementing the eSourcing 5.1 which is fully Java based. I'm not able to find the Java/SQL based extractor for it. Does anyone have any idea where we could get the Java/SQL based extractor ? If anyone has any prior  experience with extracting data from eSourcing5.1 to BW, would appreciate any advise on the best way to extract data from it, whether using standard Java/SQL based extractor or via flat files or some other methods.

    Which is coded in the region part of the button. After pressing this button popup window should come with the list.

    I'm getting the following error, when i run the report.
    I'm trying to fetch a year value from a table based on a parameter value ":P33_YEAR"

    I have written this code in a PL/SQL Function Body for a Hidden item.

    Your code is in a default value for an item, right?
    You need to make sure :P33_YEAR is not null and handle the error in the PL/SQL if it is.
    How is P33_YEAR populated? do you pass it in? check to see if it is making it there..

  • SQL function column in drop down list's data provider's query

    Just wondering, if it is somehow possible to use SQL function column for drop down list through data provider.
    At the moment, I am using id column as return value and name as display value from this query through CachedRowSetDataProvider:

    FROM someTable
    However, I want to change display to use calculated column as display value, for example Name_PostalCode from below mentioned changed query:

    But JSC doesn't seem to like this.

  • Create table dinamically using java sql types?

    Hi! I've an application that reads an XML file. This file contains de definitions of some tables, using java sql types. For example:

    </dbtable>That's a little example of one table, with one field. Is a java.sql.Types.VARCHAR (or is equivalent in int), which has a size of 10, it cannot be null and is a primary key for the table.
    Now, the lenght, null, and primary keys are not problem at all. What I want to know, is how do I create de table using the java.sql.Types. I mean, I don't want to hard code:
    String s = "CREATE TABLE name (COLUMN VARCHAR(10)...";Instead, I want to use some "wild cards", as are used in PreparedStatement. The idea of this is that no matter what DB I'm using, I must always be capable of creating the tables not worrying for the DB. I mean, I must be able to create the table in Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, etc., using the same XML and the same java class.
    Something like:
    String s = "CREATE TABLE name (COLUMN ? (10)...";
    someobject.setObject(1,java.sql.Types.VARCHAR);

  • Data passed from Java to a PL/SQL function

    OK, I am at the beginner-to-intermediate level when it comes to PL/SQL...and a virtual novice when it comes to Java, so please forgive me if my question seems strange or naive.
    We are developing a Java-based web app. Some of the screens are reminiscent of a spreadsheet-type layout--potentially LOTS of rows and LOTS of columns (actually, an open-ended # of rows/columns--the rows represent a particular 'thing' and the columns represent the dates on which that 'thing' occurred), where the user can check off any and all the cells that apply. We are also 'auditing' all database activity (who did what to the data, and when). The approach we have chosen is as follows: When the user clicks save, the first thing we do is 'inactivate' all of the existing active rows in the db for that screen, whether or not they have changed(i.e., there is an 'active' flag that we set to false & we also save the user id of the person making the change and the date time of the change). Then the Java code calls the database once per row/contiguous column unit. For instance, on a single row, if the user checks off columns 1-4 and 7-15 and column 21 the Java code will send three calls to the database for that row with info about the start/stop column for each unit.
    OK--here is my concern...the majority of the time there will be a reasonably small #of 'units'. Occasionally there will be a moderate, and once in awhile a LARGE # of 'units'. So, let's take an extreme case and say that currently the db has 200 such row/contiguous column units for a given screen. The user goes into that screen and adds the 201st unit, then clicks Save. Java calls the db to first inactivate the 200 rows. Then one by one Java calls the db to add the rows back in, only on row #40, the internet connection is lost. The only way the user can tell what happened is to look at the entire screen and reverify ALL the data in order to tell what got saved/resaved and what didn't. Obviously this is a bad situation that we want to avoid.
    I should add that the reason this approach was chosen is that the Java developers thought it would be way too complex in this situation to track the changes the user made on the screen, sort out what has been added/modified/deleted, and only call the db for changes.
    So given this background, can anyone offer any suggestions/ideas on how we can prevent unintended data loss given the auditing constraints and concern about minimizing complexity on the Java side (redesigning the GUI screen is NOT an option, as the users are very attached to this design)?
    Is there a way for Java to pass a multidimensional (& variable-sized) array to a PL/SQL function? Can Oracle's complex (row, table) data types be used in a function's parameter string, and if so...how?...Or else is there some way we can send a single call to the db on a screen like this one? We thought of calling the db once and sending one very large string packed with all the data (could get very big, not sure of Oracle's limatations on passed data--is it 32K for varchar2? )
    Advice, ideas, even random thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    That would be "the only way" if the Java programmers had decided to totally bury the error … what should happen here is the end-user should get a proper error message … no need to re-verify at this point since all bets are off (in fact, nothing should’ve been changed in the database).
    Nonetheless, your concerns regarding the chosen approach are valid … making multiple calls to the database after a Save makes controlling a business transaction rather complex (in an n-tier system) … they should make one call only to the database passing in all the data to be saved … one database transaction … either all changes get applied or none.
    The fact that lots of data may need to be passed in for one Save is of no relevance … if you have to carry 500Kb of data for that screen then, well, you have to do it … 1 bucket of 500Kb or 50 buckets of 10Kb? … it doesn’t really matter as far as the actual transport part is concerned.
    As already answered, one can pass complex types in pl/sql … so one database call per Save would be my first random thought. There are lots of suspect things in here … some things you didn’t mentioned at all … like how is concurrency addressed? … have you/they implemented some sort of optimistic locking mechanism? Of course the architecture of your system won’t be solved in a forum … so, finding a good system/data/Oracle architect on site for the project would be my second random thought.
    PS. One last random thought … fight off that idea of packing and sending large strings (XML or not) … if the data is structured then contemplate XML for no more than few seconds.

  • SQL Developer Hangs when connecting for Remote Debug

    Hello,
    I've been trying to use the Remote Debug feature of SQL Developer. We are writing a Web Application that connects to Oracle and I would like to debug a package function on the database server (which is not the same machine as my SQL Developer client).
    To test my configuration, I tried connecting on SQLPlus creating a connection (by calling exec dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', 'xxxxx'); ) and calling a function which had a breakpoint and the debugging started immediately on SQL Developer. Then I tried putting the dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', 'xxxxx'); call inside the stored procedure I was debugging (prior to the line with the breakpoint) and it connected and got to the breakpoint successfully as well. So I'm pretty sure my firewall / user privileges are set up correctly.
    So I modified the function that my web application eventually calls to create the connection (in order to remain in the same session) but whenever it gets to the connect_tcp line SQL Developer hangs and I'm unable to debug. I've realized that it only hangs if I have a breakpoint there. If I don't have a breakpoint then it creates a connection just fine. Of course without a breakpoint it's a bit difficult to debug isn't it? :)
    My Sql Developer version is 3.0 and I'm connecting to Oracle 11.1.0 Below you can find a dump when running SqlDeveloper with console. My OS is windows XP and my Oracle instance is running on Linux.

    What I mean is that I put the connect_tcp command inside the package function I want to debug in order to ensure it's going to remain in the same session. e.g.:

    I'm afraid I cannot post our code which causes this problem due to our information security policies and simple console and web applications failed to replicate the problem. The function creates a connection to Oracle SQL Developer (which can be seen in the environment with the small ladybug icon) if no breakpoints are set which obviously doesn't allow breaking into the function. However if a breakpoint is also specified in the Return line the connection seems to freeze Oracle SQL Developer. No ladybug icon is shown and no Remote Debug Session seems to open.
