Java.sql.SQLException: Insufficient Buffer size to store Columns Names
Hi !
Here is my question: every time I query
some tables in my database I get this
strange exception:
java.sql.SQLException: Insufficient Buffer
size to store Columns Names
This happens to me since we upgraded
Oracle server to a new revision version
with new JDBC classes.
Anyone can help me to fix the problem ? I
don't want to rename
the column names to shorter names.
Thanx
Thom,
How many columns are there in your query? Do they have lengthy column names? Has your schema or query changed during the upgrade?
One possible workaround if you have lengthy column names in your query is to try doing something like "select somelongcolumnname1 as c1, somelongcolumnname2 as c2 ..." and see if it works. Admittedly, this is only a workaround, but it should be better than renaming your column names.

ORA-17414: Insufficient Buffer size to store Columns Names
Hi,
During data retrieval from an Oracle 8.0.6 database (on HP-Unix) we get the following error: "Insufficient Buffer size to store Columns Names". This error is registered as ORA-17141 (???). At least this is what we see if we have a look at the JDBC driver (8.1.6 driver for Java 1.2.x in file "Message.properties" of the "classes12.zip")
We cannot find any further explanation for this problem. Which buffer size is meant? Can this buffer be adjusted? Is this an oracle buffer or an buffer used by java?
Thanks,
RonaldThom,

Insufficient Buffer size to store Columns Names
I am using WebSphere 3.02 with Oracle on OS/390. Some of my servlets work but some get the error:
Insufficient Buffer size to store Columns Names
This is a Oracle error, ORA-17414. All of the doc says:
Note: Cause and action for each message will be provided in a later release.
This was in 1999, and I still cannot find cause and action information.
Anyone know what this error is?
Thanks.Thom,

Java.sql.SQLException: Statement cache size has not been set
All,
I am trying to create a light weight SQL Layer.It uses JDBC to connect to the database via weblogic. When my application tries to connect to the database using JDBC alone (outside of weblogic) everything works fine. But when the application tries to go via weblogic I am able to run the Statement objects successfully but when I try to run PreparedStatements I get the following error:
java.sql.SQLException: Statement cache size has not been set
at weblogic.rjvm.BasicOutboundRequest.sendReceive(BasicOutboundRequest.java:108)
at weblogic.rmi.internal.BasicRemoteRef.invoke(BasicRemoteRef.java:138)
at weblogic.jdbc.rmi.internal.ConnectionImpl_weblogic_jdbc_wrapper_PoolConnection_oracle_jdbc_driver_OracleConnection_812_WLStub.prepareStatement(Unknown Source)
i have checked the StatementCacheSize and it is 10. Is there any other setting that needs to be implemented for this to work? Has anybody seen this error before? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

we don't want any driver-level pooling to be involved. It is superfluous to the functionality
we provide, and can also conflict.

Welcome to the forum!
Please get into the habit of SHOWING us what you are doing instead of just telling us.
So don't say 'the query being sent'; SHOW us the query being sent.
And don't say 'thin JDBC driver'; SHOW us the actual name and version of the JDBC jar file you are using.
For JDBC issues you should also provide the full 4 digit Oracle version (select * from V$VERSION) and the full Java version that you are using.
When you can reproduce the problem by using a simple set of Java code it helps if you post the code so we can try to reproduce the problem.
A search of the web shows that there have been reports that upgrading to ojdbc6.jar resolves the problem but for other uses it seemed to be a case of several threads using the same connection. -

Java.sql.SQLException: Cannot convert value
I have a database table - name is client. It has one field with TimeStamp Datatype.
I am using mysql-3.23.51-win and j2sdk-1_4_0_01-windows-i586.
create table client (
MODIFIED timestamp(14)
while I am doing select MODIFIED from client that time I am receiving 00000000000000.
So It has 00000000000000 value in databse.
Now I am getting this value using ResultSet. for that
I have a one Client Object class name is GenericClient
public class GenericClient {
private java.util.Date _modified;
public java.util.Date getModified() {
return _modified;
public void setModified(java.util.Date newVal) {
this._modified = newVal;
In my database processing class I am getting database value and set that value in setModified(java.util.Date newVal).
like
private Client decodeRow(ResultSet rs) throws SQLException {
GenericClient obj = new GenericClient();
obj.setModified(rs.getTimestamp(1));
return obj;
So at obj.setModified(rs.getTimestamp(1)); line I am received error message
java.sql.SQLException: Cannot convert value '00000000000000' from column 1 to TIMESTAMP.
Please guide me why I am receiving the above error.
Thanks

Java.sql.SQLException: Closed Connection
Hello
I am getting a java.sql.SQLException: Closed Connection with a simple SELECT query. This seems to be happening if i leave a session time out on a browser window. After i log on again and try to access a page which calls this simple SELECT query im getting this:
java.sql.SQLException: Closed Connection
<Error><JTA><BEA-110412><Name=[EJB com.bea.wlw.runtime.core.bean.SyncDispatcherBean.invoke<com.bea.wlw.runitme.core.request.Request>], Xid=.....Status=Rolled back.[Reason=weblogic.transaction.internal.AppSetRollbackOnlyException],HeuristicErrorCode=XA_HEURHAZ......
I need to shutdown and startup WebLogic to get my SELECT query running again in such a situation.
HELP PLEASE, any suggestions?
thanks lots
rinaHello

thanks a lot
-alokI think it's not oracle privileges ... as i have tried with dba privilege and without dba privileges, the same thing runs as oracle (unix) user.. but not by any other user.... any clues??

Hi,
I am getting the following exception when i trying to insert data in to a table through a stored procedure.
oracle.apps.fnd.framework.OAException: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01801: date format is too long for internal buffer
when execute this stored procedure from ana anonymous block , it gets executed successfully, but i use a OracleCallableStatement to execute the procedure i am getting this error.
Please let me know how to resolve this error.
Is this error something to do with the Database Configuration ?
Thanks & Regards
MeenalI don't know if this will help, but we were getting this error in several of the standard OA framework pages and after much pain and aggravation it was determined that visiting the Sourcing Home Page was changing the timezone. For most pages this just changed the timezone that dates were displayed in, but some had this ORA-01801 error and some others had an ORA-01830 error (date format picture ends before converting entire input string). Unfortunately, if you are not using Sourcing at your site, this probably won't help, but if you are, have a look at patch # 4519817.
Note that to get the same error, try the following query (I got this error in 9.2.0.5 and 10.1.0.3):
select to_date('10-Mar-2006', 'DD-Mon-YYYY________________________________________________HH24:MI:SS') from dual;
It appears that you can't have a date format that is longer than 68 characters. -
Java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: End of TNS data channel
Hello folks,
Has amyone encountered this exception? If so, could you please shed some light for what might be going wrong?
Here is my confuguration:
400MB RAM
1.2GHTz processor
Win2K Pro
Oracle server 9.0.1
JDBC Thin driver (libs for 9.0.1)
Scenario:
My Java code uses Oracle Spatial to insert SDO_GEOMETRY objects into my DB model.
I have a config file where I store my connection properties, e.g.,
<DBConnection name="twatest">
<JDBCDriver>oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver</JDBCDriver>
<URL>jdbc:oracle:thin:@saturn:1521:saturn</URL>
<Username>user1</Username>
<Password>twatest</Password>
</DBConnection>
We have 2 schemas defined: user1 and twatest.
The problem first occured when I switched from user1 to twatest. Consequent attempt to run the process as user user1 failed! The Java SQL statements do not use schemas (so they default, I suppose, to the default schema for that particular user, in our case being user1-->user1, twatest-->twatest).
The problem happens in the following Java class (search for "HERE" to see where exactly the problem occurs):
package com.vividsolutions.twatest;
import java.util.*;
import java.sql.*;
import oracle.sql.*;
import oracle.sdoapi.OraSpatialManager;

import oracle.sdoapi.adapter.*;
import oracle.sdoapi.sref.*;
import com.vividsolutions.twatest.parser.*;
import com.vividsolutions.twatest.config.*;

My client class calls LakeLoader.loadLake() method in a loop to load a bunch of Lake objects into the DB. The first lake in the list is created without problems, but when the 2-nd lake is being inserted, I get an exception at the preparedStatement.executeUpdate() statement. This happens consistently.
I tried to find information on this on the net, but seems that this problem only happened when people dealt with LOBs?!
Thank you very much!
GeorgiSuresh -- I'd probably log a TAR with Oracle support for this question if you definitely need it resolved. Support have access to all manner of existing cases, so this may be something they have seen before.

hi all,
I am trying to save an image (blob) into oracle. When i try this i am getting following error.
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01465: invalid hex number
BLOB blob = BLOB.createTemporary(con , false, BLOB.DURATION_SESSION);
String dir = "C:\\opt\\temp";

OutputStream outstream = blob.setBinaryStream(1L);
int size = blob.getBufferSize();
byte[] buffer = new byte[size];
int length = -1;
while ((length = instream.read(buffer)) != -1)
outstream.write(buffer, 0, length);
instream.close();
outstream.close();
System.out.println("blob:>>>>>>"+blob);
String sqlText =
"INSERT INTO test_fileupload (filename, blobfile) " +
" VALUES('" + filename + "','" + outstream + "')";
st.executeUpdate(sqlText);
con.commit();In the above Insert statement i tried with "blob" insted of "outstream" still same but when i try with the string "3s34se"
