Java threads on machines with hundreds of cores

I don't know if this is the right forum, but I try anyway.
My problem is with java on machines with many cores.
I have some large shared memory machines with 500 cores.
When a user run java programs on these machines java starts 300+ threads which to me seems way too much for the application as the same application runs faster on systems with less cores and memory and without creating 300+ threads.
I have found information about how to limit memory usage, but I have not been able to find any information about how to limit the number of threads java creates nor what criteria java uses to determine how many threads should be created.
In this context threads are the tasks reported under /proc/<PID of java binary>/task on a Linux system.
Thanks
John

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
We did some more testing and found that java on startup looks in /sys/devices/system/cpu/, which holds information about the 512 CPU's on the system.
We then tried to lower number of allowed processes using ulimit -u 20 and got this error when running the program:
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
# java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Cannot create GC thread. Out of system resources.
# Internal Error (gcTaskThread.cpp:38), pid=303212, tid=140353923254032
# Error: Cannot create GC thread. Out of system resources.
# JRE version: 6.0_21-b06
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (17.0-b16 mixed mode linux-amd64 )
# An error report file with more information is saved as:

Aborted
Now a Google search for gcTaskThread revealed that it is the Garbage Collector that creates the many threads. Google also told us that the number of GC threads can be controlled by the JVM option -XX:ParallelGCThreads=<number_of_GC_threads> . Specifying 8 GC threads the program now runs with 18 threads. Specifying 4 GC threads the program runs with 14 threads.
So it seems like the JVM by default creates as many Garbage Collectors threads as there are CPU's in the system.
This is a very bad practice as on such systems where programs are run within cpusets with just a small subset of the system wide CPU's.
Instead of searching /sys/devices/system/cpu/ for number of system wide CPU's JVM should read /dev/cpuset/<cpuset id>/cpus to see how many CPU's are actually available for the job.
Thanks
John

  • Problems with java Thread

    I'm reading book "JAVA THREAD" published by OREILLY.
    And on fifth chapter, it gives an example.
    one Thread's two method:
    private boolean done = false;
    public void run()
    while(!done)
    foo();
    public void setDone()
    done = true;
    it says, the run method will be compiled as machine code:
    Begin method run
    load register r1 with memory location 0xff12345
    Label L1:
    Test if register r1 == 1
    If true branch to L2
    Call method foo
    Branch to L1
    Label L2:
    End method run
    setDone method will be compiled like:
    Begin method setDone
    Store 1 into memory location 0xff12345
    End method setDone
    And it says " because Run method will never reload 0xff12345 to register r1(in while loop), so setDone method will never lead to run stop.
    I'm so puzzled with this. I have test this code on windows platform, run method can stop after another Thread call setDone method !.
    but I think "JAVA THREAD" should have error on this, so why ?

    If the book says it will happen like that, then the book is wrong.
    I think what they meant--and what would be correct to say--is that that is an example of what could happen if you don't synchronize all access to the run variable.
    The point is this: Threads can have local copies of variables, that are separate from other threads' local copies and separate from the "master" copy. The spec doesn't define where those local copies live--the implementation can put them anywhere it wants--but the most natural and sensible thing would be to store the local copies in CPU registers, rather than in main mem.
    The example the book gave shows what might happen if that VM stores threads' local copies in registers. There's no guarantee that the problem they described will happen, but it could, so you have to guard against it.
    You guard against it by declaring that shared variable volatile, which requires that the threads use the master copy rather than their local copies, or by synchronizing every access to that thread. Syncing requires reading from the master copy on entering the sync block (or on first access) and writing out to the master copy upon leaving the sync block.

  • Java thread with high CPU usage

    Hi,
    Running prstat -L -p pid on Solaris produces a list of lwp threads running in that process that are consuming the most CPU. Out of about 7 threads that were associated with kernel threads in pstack output, only 5 of them were mapped to a JVM thread dump. How is it possible to have a Java thread consuming CPU that doesn't show up in a thread dump?
    Thanks,
    J.S.

    And, any idea what this thread is doing?
    Here's pstack output for this missing thread 12:

    Please stop asking about that on this forum.
    There are plenty of informations on the Internet if you want to do it but nobody here will help, because is against the forum's rules.
    And, you can't buy Mountain Lion if you do not have a Macintosh with at least Snow Leopard installed.
    There is no physical media. Mountain Lion is provided by Apple through the Mac App Store.

  • How to assigne Java thread to a specific cpu core

    Hello everyone,
    I want to ask a complicated question. How can I assign Java threads to specific core in a multi-threaded application. The underlyinsg OS can be Linux or Windows. Is there any option provided in JVM can do it?
    If I want to fork a process using C, how can I mix the Java and C together.
    I am looking forward your suggestions.
    Thank you.

    The benefit may be to reduce the interference.You're assuming that you are smarter at thread scheduling than the algorithms written, tested, and honed over decades by people whose job is specifically that.

    Do you have your SQL server set to Windows Authentication mode only?
    You should change it to allow mixed authentication. You can do this in SQL Server Management Studio under Server Properties -> Security.

    Normally any system exception that occurs when working with JNI is caused by one of the following.
    - pointer problems
    - incorrect usage of another api
    - bug in the api being used.
    The last two are often still pointer problems.
    The fact that it ones one machine and not another makes it more likely it is a pointer problem (in one or more of the above.)
    A pointer problem cause cause the system to fail long after the point where the bug actually is (coded.) Different execution paths, such as running on different machines, means the bug will manifest itself differently.

  • R12 prompting to install java 1.7.0_25 on machine with 1.7.0_25 installed

    Our admins recently pushed down the newer java 1.7.0_25 version of the software. We were previously on 1.6 base
    R12 would not launch forms. I found the patches as described in document 437878.1,  then using document 39393.1 I put the new version of java installer, ran the txkSetPlugin for new version.
    On a machine with 1.7.0_25 installed, when attempting to launch a form the website sends down the installer and prompts me to install it again.
    On client machine I have checked control panel, command line and used a webpage to verify that 7_25 is the current version installed. We do not have permissions to attempt letting it re-install.
    What would cause this behavior?

    If this version was already installed then you may need to uninstall it and access the application to install the one which was upgraded on the server.

    If this version was not downloaded from the server then most probably that's the reason. As I mentioned above, please uninstall it from the client, then download/install it again from the application and see if this helps.

    Muddassar Khan

    Hi Muddassar,
    Hope you are doing good.
    A new note has been released exclusively for this issue. Please see:
    note 1937296 - SUM fails at start-shadow-instance-dm step. This is not
    an issue with the SCAs and more with the kernel employed.
    You will need to make sure that you are on the latest kernel so that
    this can be resolved.
    The below links will help you if there are any queries with the
    kernel update procedure

  • Can not register a new machine with Updatemanager

    Hi,
    I just install a new machine with Solaris 10 using a Flash image and Live Upgrade. The original machine from we create the Flash image was registered succesfull using Update Manager.
    Now, when I try to register the new machine, the applications ask me the user and password, but do not makes anything. The dialog freeze. The only way to stop the Update Manager is killing them (at the end is the full java error stack).
    I try with sconadm,
    sconadm register -a -r /var/tmp/registration.profile
    Unsuccessfull too, with the same stack error (Caused by: javax.management.InstanceNotFoundException: ).
    I'm bored with the Solaris patch system: all the weekend was saying error 500 for all my other registered machines, and now I can not register a new machine....
    This system fails all the time.. Is runing under W2K3 server???
    Any Idea?
    Thanks in advance.
    H.

    Well,
    The problem was a Memory problem: The swap file was misconfigured. Once the system reboots with the correct swap configuration I was able to register the machine.
    Anyway, the problem to connect with SunSolve is continous, but it is other point of discussion.
    I hope this solution can help people with similar problems.

  • Java thread pauses

    Hi,
    I am tuning a Java application, which takes a task from a queue and executes it continuously. My Queue and the thread which adds a task to it is in native C code and I am getting the data from it using JNI in the Java main thread. I am measuring the processing time of that task and finding the min/max/avg. I am observing that though the overall processing time is as expected, there are some big outliers. The Java thread pauses for some time and which causes these outliers.
    I want to tune my application so that there will not be any pauses in the executing java thread. I tried out some GC options (parallel as well as concurrent low pause collector) but didn't get rid of these. Could someone suggest right parameters or a way to avoid these pauses?
    Note: If I run exactly similar task completely through C code I don't see these outliers, so this is most probably something in Java rather than my application
    Thanks.

    How big are your "big outliers"? What does running with -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintGCDetails show? Do the start times shown there correspond to the outliers you see? Do the pauses you see there correspond to the outliers?
    Post a log here from trying the concurrent (low-pause) collector, along with your command line parameters and the characteristics of your machine (number of processors, amount of physical memory, which version of the JVM you are using, etc.), and I'll try to help.
    On java.sun.com you can search for "Java memory tuning" and get several pointers to documents to help you tune for your application.

  • Multi-Thread Slot Machine (Threads are the problem)

    I am trying to make a slot machine with two threads. One sleeps for a little while after changing the symbols (to simulate the spinning) and then that thread yields to the higher priority main thread which should update the GUI. However, the second thread runs then stops itself like it should. However, it then restarts itself before the main thread gets to execute to update the GUI so I added repaint() and revalidate() to the second thread as well. However, nothing happens. The icons (symobls) do not even change when the second thread finishes.
    The link below is to the zip file containing my project.
