Java Web Start help needed about writing files?

Hi there! I have this java web start app. i have implemented the File Open service succesfully using the JNLP API but i cant seem to get the File Save Service to work. Basically I have an object in the system which I want it to be serialised to a file on the user's desktop.

i am a student. working on a project. using java web services. using its api jax-rpc. i have compiled, deployed and run an example given in the tutorial of the web services tutorial\examples\jaxrpc\hello. now i want to bring the "hello" folder out of its original directory to e.g c:\project\. i have tried alot. i am not able to set the paths in the xml files provided. if any one of you can help me in this. my address is [email protected] . i am waiting for your reply.

Try the following steps
create a directory structure
c:\projects\jaxrpc
copy your example
<JWSDP>/docs/tutorial/examples/jaxrpc/hello to
c:\projects\jaxrpc
you may need to remove \build and \dist from the
example if you have already tried the example
copy your example
<JWSDP>/docs/tutorial/examples/jaxrpc/common to
c:\projects\jaxrpc
Now the example will run correctly but only the war
file is created in your original tutorial location.
Now modify tut-root in
c:\projects\jaxrpc\common\build.properties to
tut-root=C:\\projects
and modify the war-path in \hello\build.properties to
point to
war-path=${tut-root}/jaxrpc/${example}/dist/${deployabl
-war}
If anything fails first check the paths through
<YOUR_path>\hello>ant debug
If there is problem post details where it is failing.

Desperate help needed with writing files

I need to know how i can write files with an applet to a directory so that i can retrieve the files for later use. I need to know how to do this step by step as i am a beginner. i've tried looking for tutorials and i just can't seem to get it working.
can somebody PLEASE provide me with some valid info here as i'm sure that many others have exactly the same problem and can refer to this topic.

You will need a certificate to sign the Applet with.
here is a rehash of the script I use to to this...
CERTIFICATE_FILE_NAME is the name of your certificate file.
c:\windows\.keystorefile is the path & name of your keystore
jar cf tmp.jar *.class *.gif *.jpg *.au
jarsigner -keystore c:\windows\.keystorefile -signedjar YOUR_DESTJARNAME.jar tmp.jar CERTIFICATE_FILE_NAME
del tmp.jar
del *.classThis is excatly what you need to do and your file writes will work.
Now you may need to tweak your getImage to find the files within the
jar but thats another story.

The File class has got method to delete a file from file system.
File objFile = new File("<the complete path of the file>");
if(objFile.exists()) { objFile.delete(); }
Only extra thing with unix will be permission to delete
the file. If the user who is logged into the system with
permission to delete the file then only the java
program which is run under that user id will be able
to delete the file. Otherwise change the mode of that
directory to '777'.
chmod 777 /home/temp

Im trying to open the help file of my application.
When trying to access the help file from the GUI (pressing F1 for launching the help file), I'm geting the an error, something like:
"Can't show help URL: jar:file:C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\javaws\cache\http\Dlocalhost\P7001\DMwebstart\RMjar-name!/com/resources/helpFiles/MyHelpFile.html"
It seems that the file which is packed in a jar, was downloaded to the Java Web Start cache directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\javaws\cache\http\Dlocalhost\P7001\DMwebstart
The code which is activated when launching the help file is:

I found these restrictions regarding web start:

*Rule 1: Java Archives only. No loose files.* All your resources have to be packaged in Java Archives (jar) if you want to have
them delivered to the user's machine and kept up-to-date automatically by Java Web Start.
*Rule 2: No file paths.* You can't use absolute or relative file paths to locate your
jars holding your resources (e.g. <code>jar:file:///c:/java/jws/.cache/resources.jar</code>).
Absolute file paths won't work because you never know where Java Web Start
will put your jar on the user's machine. Relative file paths won't work because Java Web Start
mangles the names of your jars (e.g. <code>venus.jar</code> becomes <code>RMvenus.jar</code>)
and every JNLP client implementation has the right to mangle your names
in a different way and you, therefore, can't predict the name with
which your jar will be rechristend and end up on the user's machine in

Custom classloader fails when using Java Web Start

Hope you can help me with a problem that is driving me nuts. I have implemented my own classloader to support plugins. This classloader works as follows:
1. The classloader is configured to access a plugin components jar file downloaded by jws.
2. The plugin components jar file contains other jar files which contains the actual plugin code to be loaded using my own classloader.
3. Upon initialization - my classloader extracts all jar files contained in the plugin components jar file into temporary files.
4. These temporary files are used by my classloader when defining plugin classes.
The classloader works fine when not using java web start. Then I launch the application using java web start with security policy in .jnlp file set to:

After a while (it was able to load some of the classes) it fails with the following stack-trace:

Does anyone have source code for implementing a simple class loader that can be used with Java Web Start (preferrably with all jar files to be used by the classloader wrapped into a jar file)

If you implement your own classloader, and then still run with a SecurityManager installed, then your ClossLoader is responsible for asigning the permissions to the code it loads.
You need your ClassLoader to extend SecureClassLoader, and implement the method :
SecureClassLoader.getPermissions(CodeSource cs) to return the PermissionCollection you want.

Java Web Start doesn't start (Windows XP)

Hi,
I've installed Java Web Start on a Windows XP machine. When I try to run an application or I try to open Java Web Start directly the "Java Web Start" splash screen appears for a few seconds and than disappears and nothing else happens.
I heard that other people using Windows XP have the same problem. Can anyone help?
Java Runtime is 1.4.0, but I also tried some other runtimes as well with the same result.

I have the same problem, but I do have configured the webserver (Apache 2) correctly and the server is NOT returning a 404 error.
To check this I used the a tcp monitor (Apache Axis).
The error message in Java Webstart is identical to the one discribed above.

Question about using third party jar files in Java Web Start Environment

If you directly include classes12.jar in IRMASSvrMgntGUI.jar, the classloader won't be able to find the classes inside classes12.jar. You should sign classes12.jar separately and include that in jnlp along with your application specific jar. When you're launching your app using "java -jar somefile.jar" then the classpath settings in manifest file are used, but that's not the case when you start using JWS since in this case the classpath is based only on the " <jar href=..." entries in jnlp.

did you sign the jar files you deploy ? Please follow the instruction sin teh online help and have a look at the batch file that need to be run to create the JClient ear file. This file contains signing information that might not be true for your system.

Hello,
I have a Java Web Start application that runs fine if the application is only 1 .jar file.
But I have a need to also run C++ .exe and .dll file from my Java application.
I wonder if someone could please tell me how to package/include C++ .exe and
.dll files in my Java web start application?

You need to place the EXE and DLLs inside the jar.
Java cannot execute them from the jar. They have to be extracted (see Class.getResourceAsStream) from the jar and copyied into the target machine file system, perahps to the temp directory. Now you can execute them using Runtime.exec() or ProcessBuilder.start().
