Java Web Start Vs. Servlets

Hi,
I need to write an Web application that :
1. Accepts user input (mainly in the form of pre-defined data files)
2. Sends the data to the server for computationally intensive analysis
3. Presents the user with results and options for further analysis
4. Provides user with the option to save the results of the analysis on the DB at the Server-side.
5. Supports queries on the data stored at the Server-side DB.
Do I go with a Servlet or with a Java Web Start application ?
Sincerely yours,
Akochi

From what you listed, go with servlets (and/or jsp). You can do all sorts of data entry and displaying of results with using jsp and servlets.

  • Communicate with servlet after using Java Web Start?

    Is it possible to communicate with servlet to get data back and forth
    after using Web Start to download the client application?
    The demos come with Java Web Start are applications which are
    standalone, don't need communicate with the servlet on Web server
    after being launched. I am wondering if it is possible, and how (HTTP
    & JAX-RPC)?
    Thanx in advance.

    I've done this using HTTP. I get the server and port from the codebase:
    BasicService bs = null;
    try {
    bs = (BasicService)ServiceManager.lookup("javax.jnlp.BasicService");
    String codeBase = bs.getCodeBase().toString();
    and use the java.net.HttpURLConnection and java.net.URL classes to send HTTP parameter values to the servlet and to receive results from the HttpURLConnection's input stream.

  • RMI,Servlets and Java Web Start

    I am a new developer working on a java application. My java GUI will access one server where a user will have an account. This server will store data, execute programs and access other servers for information. I have completed the GUI and I am beginning to build the client-server communication with RMI. There appear to be several tools for doing client-server communication, and while I have read much, I don't understand which is the best to explore. For applets I have read that a good method to use is servlets with RMI. But is this also true for a stand-alone application? If not, what is the best/preferred method? What if I choose to use Java Web Start (which I have not read up on, yet) will the best method of client-server communication change?
    Thanks in advance, shawn

    It depends on your budget too. To me the optimim way to communicate is to use SERVLET/JSP combination for client/server communication.

    I did checked the names again and I found that the makeJar.bat had an "issue".
    It missed the del *.jar and I had 2 uppercase letters like ConvertorValutar, instead of convertorvalutar.jar.
    After that I rebuild the war and deployed and it works :)

  • Dynamic JNLP - displaying using java web start

    Hi,
    I am creating a dynamic JNLP in a servlet at the server side. Please see below.
    String someJnlpString = "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?> \n" +
                                                "<jnlp .....    >    </jnlp>";
            String attachment = "inline; filename=\"launch.jnlp";
            String ct = "application/x-java-jnlp-file";
            OutputStreamWriter out = new OutputStreamWriter(response.getOutputStream());
            response.setContentType(ct);
            response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "max-age=30");
            response.setHeader("Content-disposition", attachment);
            out.write(someJnlpString);{code}
      Then in my JSP, I am trying to open this JNLP  by using the following code
    {code}        window.open('servlet/DisplayImage?arg=first-arg");The exception that I am getting is JNLParseException could not parse launch file. Error at line 0. If I open the downloaded file then its working.
    Can somebody please advise me how can I directly open that JNLP from the servlet by using java web start?
    Thanks a ton,
    Subhash

    I am able to run it now after clearing the java cache

  • Why Java Web Start doesn't support Pack200 out-of-the-box?

    Hello All,
    Why Java Web Start doesn't support Pack200 out-of-the-box? I was hoping that Java 6 would make things easier by adding direct support for Pack200 in Java Web Start and JNLP without needing to use servlets, etc.? All my clients are Java 5 or above so I can't push the Pack200 compressed version of the jar to every single one of them and there is no selection process needed. But I can't do it because of the servlet or complex Apache server setup requirement (it would be a headache to get customers' web server admins to set up Apache or whatever web server that way).
    My question is why is there unwillingness to add Pack200 support directly to Java Web Start and JNLP so that you can start Pack200 compressed jars just like you would start any jar using Java Web Start? Is te a technical problem?
    Thank you,
    Mete Kural

    Hallo,
    I didnt try it, but the webstart FAQs read:
    Can I use Pack200 compression with the JnlpDownloadServlet?
    Yes. The JnlpDownloadServlet distributed in the samples directory of the JDK now supports Pack200. If you deploy yourfile.jar along with yourfile.jar.pack.gz the packed file will be downloaded when the client is running Java Web Start 1.5.0 or later.
    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/javaws/developersguide/faq.html#217
    For further information you may want to look at
    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/javaws/developersguide/downloadservletguide.html#pack200
    The configuration of the server and the the servlet (as described in the second link) is as easy as it seems.
    I got it working on the first try and it was my first experience with websevers at all.

  • Java Web Start and Cookies

    Hello All,
    We have the following scenario
    1) A user logs in to our website. The session information for the logged in user is maintained in the cookie.
    2) The User clicks the jnlp link to invoke the applet.
    3) The Java Web Start gets activiated and it tries to dowload the JNLP file.
    4) The Web start is not able to download the file since it cannot send the required cookie to the webserver and the webserver is denying the access.
    Is it possible to pass the existing session information (The session information is stored in cookie) from the browser to the java web start, so that the java webstart will pass the cookies for each subsequent access.
    Thanks and Regards
    Jagadeesh

    I have the following:
    Web page has a link to a servlet which dynamically creates the JNLP file.
    The servlet that produces the jnlp requires basic user authentication.
    When the link is click the Logon dialog appears. User logs in and the jnlp gets dynamically written. When the JNLP file is done being created by the servlet, this cause WebStart to execute the newly created jnlp masterpiece. Since WebStart does not share sessions with the browser, webstart causes the Logon dialog to appear again Forcing the confused user to re-login. What is up with that?
    Does Sun have a solution for this? Is noone doing authentication using webstart. This has to be a definite problem. Sure we could tell the users to login twice, then they would simply stop using our application.

  • Java Web Start and IE6 as the default browser on win2k

    Hi,
    I need to access web pages from my java web start app. These pages are on the save server and the same webapp context as the jsp page to launch the web start app, and are protected.
    I have tried with basic auth and servlet filter with cookie to control the access to the web server. When I need to access web server resource from web start app, I create the URL to the page I want to access, set the auth header or cookie and call the web start BasicService to open it in the default browser.
    With Netscape 4/7 or Firefox as the default browser, I have no problem to send the auth header or cookie from the web start app to the webserver for security checking and get access to the resource on the server.
    But it seems not woking when IE is set to be the default browser. I am always asked for userid/password if I use basic auth; or redirected to the login page if I use servlet filter and cookie.
    If anybody knows a solution for this IE dfficulity, could you please share it?

  • Java Web Start and pack200

    Hi!
    What do I have to do to deploy my jar-archives that are packed with pack200? Do I have to change the jnlp files? Do I have to change any server settings?
    At the moment I successfully deploy our software using Java Web Start and simple jar files. If I pack with pack200 the archives shrink to 1/4 of the original size. That is nice, but when I put the xxx.jar.pack.gz files on our web server they are ignored by Java Web Start. Explicitly use the xxx.jar.pack.gz files in the jar arguments of the jnlp file doesn't work either (because JWS expects .jar archives there it tells me that the archives are corrupted).
    I figure that I have to change either the jnlp file, the server settings or the JWS clients settings.
    In another posting I have read that JWS in its normal configuration does not support pack200 at all. Is that correct? Or is there a straight-forward documentation how to use JWS with pack200?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris,
    Hamburg

    Either the JWS plugin should try to request the "xxx.jar.pack.gz" file when it finds a "xxx.jar" reference in the jnlp file.No. You always request jar files, but the Accepted-Ecnoding can differ. If omitted or empty the server should send back the contents of the jar, if it's "gzip" than the stuff of the jar.gz (Content-Encoding: gzip) and if it "pack200-gzip" the stuff of the jar.pack.gz (Content-Encoding: pack200-gzip).
    The diagrams shown here make it pretty obvious:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/deployment/deployment-guide/pack200.html
    So... you need some server sided logic for handling that. If you can run servlets - great... just use Sun's example. If you can't, you'll need something else like apache's mod_rewrite and a php script.
    mod_rewrite is used for redirecting requests server sided. For example:
    http://onyx.bubblegumcrises.jp/jnlp/downloads/fake.jar [no real url]
    becomes:
    http://onyx.bubblegumcrises.jp/jnlp/jarbounce.php?file=fake.jar (internally) [no real url]
    by rewriting like this(jnlp/.htaccess):
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /jnlp
    RewriteRule downloads/(.*) jarbounce.php?file=$1 [NE]
    The php file then checks the filename (for security reasons) and the accepted encoding and sends the contents of a file (picked by AE and availability) back together with the correct headers (Content-Encoding reflecting the picked encoding and Content-Type set to "application/x-java-archive").
    I've written such a script yesterday and I'm going to make it public. However, I want to do some more checks before releasing it (I ended up here by googling around... I wanted to avoid reinventing the wheel again ;)).
    I'll post it over at JGO pretty soon now... in this thread:
    http://www.javagaming.org/cgi-bin/JGNetForums/YaBB.cgi?board=OnLin;action=display;num=1097590751;start=0
    [I'm also planning to write an article about that, but that will take a bit longer]

  • Java Web Start and JAAS

    Has anybody tried to use JAAS in an application launched via Java Web Start?
    I'm experiencing problems with it. (The application works fine when being launched directly on the client.)
    If somebody already successfully tried, please let me know.
    Do I need to modify tags in the JNLP file? Do I need to re-configure my webserver or servlet engine?

    OK I got a response from the Java Web Start engineering folks. It sounds like using JAAS directly, to login to an ejb app server or whatever, is out of the question with Java Web Start on JDK1.3:
    << begin Sun's email >>
    The problem you got is due to JAAS 1.0 (jaas.jar) uses systemClassLoader to load
    classes that are defined in the JNLP application jar files, which should be
    loaded by the contextClassLoader instead. For more information on classLoading
    with JWS, look at:
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/faq.html#54
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/docs/developersguide.html#dev
    The new JAAS that comes with JDK 1.4 fixed this problem, which uses
    contextClassLoader in their class.
    Thanks for your interest in Java Web Start.
    << end of Sun's email >>
    FYI our workaround: We use a SOAP servlet as a proxy for the app server and we've defined a SOAP xmlrpc api between our client and the application server. This has the advantage of being able to get thru firewalls, as our variant of SOAP is transported on HTTP. Java Web Start installs and starts the SOAP client.
    I would hope the JWS folks would search the Sun provided services and see which ones ignore the current thread's class loader and fix them.

  • Help with Java Web Start

    Hi everybody,
    I have a simple Java application that has a JFrame containing a TextField displaying some text inside it. I am using the NetBeans IDE. I am trying to Enable Java Web start for this application. The steps I have taken upto now are:
    1. Right click on Project, Java Web Start -> Enable Java Web Start. This created the jnlp file.
    2. In the Resources section, I added the jar file for swing. ( I am not sure if I have to add the path for jnlp.jar etc, or are these found automatically?)
    3. Right click on Project, Java Web Start -> Deploy with Java Web Start. This launches the browser with the Click me link, but on clicking this link, I get the following error.

    I am not sure what it has to do with servlets, I just followed a tutorial on using Netbeans with Java Web Start, and did only the steps as mentioned in my first post. And ended up with the error.
    Anyways, I added the jnlp jar files(jnlp.jar, jnlp-servlet.jar, jardiff.jar) in the WEB-INF/lib directory. And it seems to deploying it now. I can get my application to load on clicking on the "Click me" link. But the controls on my application don't seem to be working.
    Also, when I try to Right click on my project -> Java Web Start -> Run with Java Web Start, I get the following error message,

  • Java Web Start (JNLP) getResource return null.

    I have a Java Web Start Swing application and with the Java version 1.6.0_u27.
    same code run from jdk1.1.8 to jdk 1.6, more then 10 customers it's work fine, java web start only run on jdk 1.4.0 and jdk 1.5.0.
    just migrate one customer from Java version 1.5.0_u6 to 1.6.0_u27.
    sometimes, the getResource will return null, when system return null, then system cannot get any other resource, always return null.
    It only happen in Java web start environment, work fine in command line (java/javaw), and same as the WebStart loses resources post,
    "Unfortunately this cannot be reproduced easily. Sometimes this happens after some minutes, sometimes the application can be used for days without problems.",
    note. all of my resource files put in the same jar file, one resource file in that jar get fail, all files will be fail.
    after I get the url, I will use new BufferedInputStream(url.openStream()); to retrieve data, never use the File object.
    for example, get resource from "/path/a1.xml", "/path/a2.xml"....... 30 minutes pass, get same file "/path/a1.xml" will return null, then all resource will return null.
    URL url = getClass().getResource(s);
    if(url == null) {
    System.out.println(getClass().getResourceAsStream(s)); // also null, log only
    // if the url == null, the following retrieve will be null
    url = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader().getResource(s);
    if(url == null){
    System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(s)); // also null, log only
    ClassLoader loader = getClass().getClassLoader();
    if(loader == null){
    loader = ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader();
    if(loader != null) {
    System.out.println(loader.getResourceAsStream(s)); // also null, log only
    url = loader.getResource(s);
    if(url == null) {
    System.out.println("URL resource still can not found!!" + s);

    I ran into the same problem with JNLP and IE.
    Here is the trick I am using to make IE think that it is dealing with "real" .jnlp file. This works on JBoss-3.2.1/Tomcat-4.1.24 bundle.
    In web.xml:
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>fakejnlp</servlet-name>
    <description>jsp that generates JNLP on the fly</description>
    <jsp-file>start.jsp</jsp-file>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>fakejnlp</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/start.jnlp</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    Now, when you request start.jnlp (perhaps, with HTTP parameters), you end up executing your start.jsp. IE is happy. One limitation, though: if you need to pass parameters, there should be no href attribute in <jnlp> element.

  • More problems with Java Web Start

    In my quest for running a simple JClient as a Java Web Start, I encountered another roadblock.
    The JClient program runs fine when run on its own, but it fails when it runs from Java Web Start, and the stack trace says that the Application Module failed to get an instance because it couldn't find the following class (complete stack trace at bottom): javax/servlet/http/HttpSessionContext
    (Now, isn't that a deprecated class?) I feel like I'm plagued with all kind of errors lately. Anyone knows what am I doing wrong?

  • Weblogic with Java Web Start

    Hi, everyone.
    I am trying to do an example of application with JWS, but in my example the server is Tomcat, because I did not found an example to do with Weblogic.
    So I want to know where I have to configurate my server to set my application as a JWS application, to be donwloaded fo another application.
    Thaks!

              Could someone kindly follow this and find us a solution?
              Thank you.

  • Does Netscape Enterprise Server support Java Web Start?

    Hi,
    I working on this problem too. Could you send me about
    your project's details ? (spec and config)
    My email: [email protected]
    Thank you.I've come to the conclusion that Java Web Start does not support hosting applications on password protected servers. It plain does not not work.
    If anyone can get it to work, please let me know.
    For me the JWS version based servlet is not a hosting option. I'm stuck with a dumb old IIS server. The only reason I'd want to use the version based servlet hosting is to work around the update bugs.
    See my other recent postings.
    I've posted a bug-report on the bugparade, but it will take three months before I should expect a reply.
    At that point, they may dismiss the bug-reports as "intended features", in which case I do wish there was more options to "turn off" "features" in the JNLP file. ;-)
    For now I've been my client has accepted "security by obscurity" for the beta version of the program I'm working on, i.e. I've put the program in a "secret" place and turned off password protection.
