JDBC : ODBC Datasource

Currently we are using the jdbc:odbc to connect to a database.
basically -
forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver").newInstance();
props.setProperty("user", "xxx");
props.setProperty("password", "xxx");
return DriverManager.getConnection(URL, props);
I want to put a datasource into JNDI and use the datasource.getConnection method to connect to our db what do i need - specificly - can i get a DataSource object for the jdbc:odbc bridge?

Hi,
I have printed out the J2EE tutorial for j2sdkee1.3 today, and this answers all the quesions you are asking. It is obviously available under downloads (search j2ee). It is well worth reading.And lots more info too.

  • Jdbc-odbc bridge with Connection pool datasource

    I have created a little j2ee app in which an enterprise bean accesses a ms sql server table by creating a JNDI datasource using sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver. I can successfully deploy it and run it on the jsdkee 1.3 J2EE server. However, when I attempt to deploy it on WebSphere 4.0 AES, the app fails attempting to make the database connection. The error log states: "Unable to connect to database: the class (sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver) does not implement javax.sql.ConnectionPoolDatasource or javax.sql.XADatasource". Which, of course, is probably true, but is there a WebSphere workaround? There is nothing remotely related mentioned at the IBM WebSphere site.

    Thx. So far, I have not found a readily accessible free alternative driver that supports connection pooling. The drivers list notes several corporate offerings that do; freetds may work but I don't know yet. If it does, I will update this discussion.

  • J2EE and JDBC-ODBC bridge driver

    Hi all,
    in my application I want to access an ODBC database to get the data and put it into cloudscape. In my resources.properties I added the jdbc driver
    jdbcDriver.1.name=sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriverand also added a datasource
    jdbcDataSource.5.name=jdbc/MyOdbc
    jdbcDataSource.5.url=jdbc\:odbc\:odbc-nameAfter starting j2ee 1.3.1 the server reports following error:
    Error in creating data source object: jdbc/MyOdbcWhat's going wrong? Thanks for your help.
    -chris

    additional information:
    The phenomenon happens only if I use J2SDK 1.4.0. Running the 1.3.1 the driver is loaded without any problems.
    Is it a security issue or am I not allowed to use 1.4 because it's too new?

  • JDBC-ODBC connectivity from JSP page

    hi
    i am trying to connect a jsp page with database using jdbc-odbc driver. i have created a dsn with the name 'test' that connects to a database 'test' in SQL server. the following lines has been added to the web.xml file placed in the \WEB-INF folder
    <context-param>
    <param-name>
    javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.sql.dataSource
    </param-name>
    <param-value>
    jdbc:odbc:text, sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
    </context-param>
    i have also placed the rt.jar file in the \WEB-INF\lib folder. but, when i run the jsp page and ty to make any database interaction, an expection occurs
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException : sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
    please help

    I think you need to download the JDBC/ODBC driver jar file into your project. For example, if you need a JDBC driver for the Oracle database, you search google for 'oracle jdbc driver'. Its driver is something like classes14.jar. I suggest you create and test your database connection pool in a servlet so you will have an easier time debugging any issues in getting it to work.
    Also, as the previous post points out, JSP is for displaying data and submitting user input back to the servlet. Put all your business logic in the servlet, put any data you get from the database in request scope by the servlet, dispatch to the JSP page so it can be displayed. This is a crude example. For a better design read up on MVC (Model View Controller) design.

    Translating the local spanish message, should be something like: "Can't find data source and no default driver defined."
    I don't get this error if i access through the same driver but not on web server Tomcat 4.0.1. And I don't get this error even under Tomcat with other jdbc drivers (mysql for example).
    Someone knows what is happening here?
    I would apreciate some help.
    Thank you.

    If you're running on Windows, you need to create an ODBC datasource to connect to.
    To accomplish this, you need to go to Start >>> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Data Sources (ODBC),
    2. On the User DSN tab, click add
    3. give it a name, this is the name you will use in the connection string. jdbc:odbc:<name>
    4.Click Select, then find your mdb file, or other database file.
    5. click Ok.

    The last line gives me the follwoing error :
    [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified
    puneet is name of my datasource and it points to my .mbd file.
    I dont have anyusername or passwords for this daatsource.
    I am using Tomcat/4.1.18-LE and jdk1.4
    I have also added rt.jar in the classpath
    pls help
    pg4

    Hi pg4,
    May be your dsn is not pointing to .mdb file. Check it by putting your mdb file right where your code is and then user following syntax which is called dsn-less connection. It helps you to connect to the target mdb file with out any need of dsn.
    String url = "jdbc:odbc:;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; DBQ=yourDBFile.mdb";

  • Migrate tables and data from ODBC datasource to Oracle 11.2

    Hiya
    I have a database file in Dynamics NAV 5.0 native format - about 200-300 tables totalling maybe 10 GB worth of data.
    My task is to migrate those tables with their data into a schema in our Oracle 11.2 database.
    No tools support the NAV format directly :-) But I have a windows ODBC driver for that format that works.
    The Oracle database runs on Linux and I have no ODBC transparent gateway and no linux ODBC driver that would let me access the NAV datafile directly from within Oracle.
    I tried migration wizard in SQL Developer, but it seems it cannot use a "generic ODBC" datasource (even with JDBC-ODBC bridge), it must be a supported database format?
    Then I have tried trial of product Altova MapForce, but it can't seem to read the schema (table/columns) from the ODBC datasource for some reason.
    I know reading the schema from the ODBC datasource is possible - I have used third party product "Database Browser" that reads the ODBC with no problems.
    And a colleague has read the schema of the ODBC in C# also.
    I am primarily a SQL developer. My colleague said he could write in C# a program that looped over the tables in the ODBC, read the columns, executed "create table" in Oracle, read data from the ODBC, inserted data in Oracle.
    But he is going on vacation right now :-( And I keep thinking that someone else must have written such a migration program ;-)
    I just can't seem to find it by googling? Altova Mapforce was my best bet, but it just seems to have problems with this specific ODBC datasource.
    Any ideas for a migration tool that can accept a generic ODBC datasource and not specifically SQL Server, MySQL, DB2, etc.?
    Thanks for any hints that might help ;-)

    Hi Kim,
       The earlier 9i and 10g generic connectivity option - HSODBC - could only run as part of the RDBMS but the 11g DG4ODBC can be installed and run standalone without an RDBMS.  You then connect using database links from Linux using an entry in the RDBMS tnsnames.ora as you have said.
    See these notes depending if Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit -
    How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on Windows 32bit to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install (Doc ID 466225.1)
    How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on 64bit Windows Operating Systems to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install (Doc ID 1266572.1)
    The latest 11.2 version is available from My Oracle Support as -
    Patch 13390677: 11.2.0.4.0 PATCH SET FOR ORACLE DATABASE SERVER
    and for the gateways you only need to download -
    p13390677_112040_WINNT_4of6.zip
    for 32-bit but
    p13390677_112040_MSWIN-x86-64_5of7.zip
    for 64-bit.
    The downloads have everything necessary for a gateway standalone install.

  • JDBC-ODBC Bridge with iAS on UNIX

    Can the Sun JDBC-ODBC bridge be used with iAS on UNIX (Solaris)? If possible, can someone share the basic steps. For example, what parameters to enter when configuring the bridge as a datasource and also how to pass needed environment variables (LD_LIBRARY_PATH has to have the path of the ODBC driver manager).
    I need to connect to a ODBC driver on UNIX, no JDBC driver is available for this data source, nor is a Windows solution acceptable.
    I have iAS 6.0 SP3 with iWS 4.1 SP9 on Solaris 8.

  • JDBC ODBC dbf

    My java program is connecting to a dbf (VisualFoxPro) file with JDBC ODBC bridge.
    I try to truncate the table (delete all records) in the dbf but foxpro does not have the truncate command
    Then i try "delete from table" with set delete on, but the entries are only hidden, they are not deleted.
    How could I truncate the dbf files?

    Have you
    1) Set up an ODBC data source in the Windows "Data Sources(ODBC)" control panel ?
    2) Connected via the following connection url, eg. if you named your odbc datasource "myDBF",
    the jdbc url should be "jdbc:odbc:myDBF"
    That's the main difference between reading dBase files, and a standard JDBC data source.

    Owen

  • Weblogic server using jdbc-odbc bridge

    I want to connect to database through jdbc-odbc bridge.I am using web logic server. When i creating new jdbc connection pool a error comes that driver class is not on classpath. how i rectify this problem? how I make weblogic to recognize sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver?

    like any other library...
    put the .jar file of the lib in the WEB-INF/lib of
    your webappWrong in so many ways.
    You don't add drivers to WEB-INF/lib if they're being acquired as datasources - the server needs access to the driver to create the data source. If you're not using a DataSource but materializing the connection directly, then this advice is semi-correct, but it's a crappy way to build a web app.
    You don't normally add a JAR for the Sun JDBC ODBC bridge anyway as it's present by default in their J2SE implementation.
    And finally, I think WebLogic doesn't use the Sun J2SE implementation anyway, so it's possible that the bridge is not available at all.
    So the correct answer is: Don't use the bridge driver. Acquire a driver for your specific database and use that. And make sure that it's available to the application server. If you absolutely must use the bridge driver, you're going to have to use the Sun J2SE implementation to run WebLogic - and I think you'll have to consult the WebLogic site for help with that.

  • Jdbc-odbc-bridge connection pool

    I got a problem with odbc connection pool in my Sun App Server 7.
    When i try to connect to the odbc database (msaccess or conzept16), i got a SQLException : com.sun.enterprise.repository.J2EEResourceException
    java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: setdatabaseName .....
    It seems that i cant set any propertys like url, user or password. The exception throws every time NoSuchMethodException: setURL or ... NoSuchMethodException: setUser
    I tried this with pointbase database and pointbase drivers and there was no problem. Also when i connect direct from jsp page to the odbc database without connection pool it works.
    How can i set a propper connection pool with the jdbc-odbc-bridge? Please Help. There is no jdbc driver for that database available.
    Is that right using sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver for that?
    here my server.xml
    <resources>
    <jdbc-resource enabled="true" pool-name="access-pool" jndi-name="jdbc/AccessDB"/>
    <jdbc-connection-pool steady-pool-size="2" max-pool-size="6" max-wait-time-in-millis="60000" pool-resize-quantity="2" idle-timeout-in-seconds="300" is-isolation-level-guaranteed="false" is-connection-validation-required="false" connection-validation-method="auto-commit" fail-all-connections="false" datasource-classname="sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" name="access-pool" validation-table-name="TAB_NAME">
    <property value="jdbc:odbc:testdb" name="databaseName"/>
    </jdbc-connection-pool>
    </resources>

    AFAIK the bridge driver does not support multipleopen
    connections (which is what connection pooling
    requires).Wrong.
    It might be the case that the bridge AND ms access
    does not support that but I seriously doubt that as
    well.
    Yesterday I didn't want to test this. Today I did.
    So I can state that it is completely wrong.
    There might be some other reason preventing the usage in a pool, but it isn't the number of open connections.

  • JDBC-ODBC Bridge with iAS on Solaris

    Is there any way to use the Sun JDBC-ODBC bridge with the iPlanet
    Application Server running on UNIX (Solaris)? If it is possible, can
    someone who has done it share the basic steps. For example, I cannot
    figure out what parameters to enter when configuring the bridge as a

    It seems that on Windows iAS has ODBC as a Type 2 JDBC data source (at

  • What's the URL in a JDBC-ODBC bridge driver connection?

    I'm trying to use a JDBC-ODBC bridge driver but I don't know what is the URL I need to put inside a the "getConnection (String URL, String userid, String passwd)" method.

    Yes Marc,
    but maybe Edgar should know that he first has to add a ODBC datasource.
    in WINNT
    Goto System ODBC Datasources and try to connect to your DB.
    If the test is working than you can use the name you have chosen
    as URL
