JDK1.3 problems

I have just installed jdk1.3 and am having some problems. The System.out.println(); and the System.out.print(); commands don't do anything! I am also unsure how to set the PATH so that I don't have to type the whole directory to compile or run the programmes. If anyone has any ideas I would be gratefull.
Thanks

This may duplicate some of what you've already done, if so fine. But please verify you've done exactly what is written or know why you shouldn't before proceeding. You may want to print these instructions before continuing.
To download the correct software, go here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html
and click on the word download in this line:
Windows (all languages, including English) in the column labeled SDK
After downloading, click on this page of installation instructions and read through #6:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/install-windows.html
Install the software according to the preceeding instructions
Below is a Helloworld program, copy and paste it into your editor and save it as "HelloWorld.java" Use capitalization, Java is case-sensitive. If you're using Notepad, quote the name when saving, otherwise Notepad adds ".txt" to the name. Go to DOS and check that you've got the file where you want it and that it's named correctly.
----------program HelloWorld.java--------------
public class HelloWorld {
public static void main (String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello World!");
In the same directory as HelloWorld.java, enter "javac" - the program should print out a list of options, if not, set your PATH - see below.
In the same directory as HelloWorld.java, enter "javac HelloWorld.java" and the javac compiler will create HelloWorld.class. If it was successful it will not give any messages. Check that the file is created.
In the same directory as HelloWorld.java, enter "java -cp . HelloWorld" with the spaces and the period. The program will run.
Here is additional information:
The Path is a set of pointers that Windows uses to locate programs that you execute, like javac.exe and java.exe. This setting is explained here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/install-windows.html
Scroll down to: 5. Update the PATH variable
(you should have already done this as part of the s/w installation)
The CLASSPATH is another set of pointers that is used by Java to find the files that you create and want compiled and/or run. This setting is explained here:
Setting the Classpath:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/tooldocs/windows/classpath.html
[NOTE: always start your classpath with ".;" which means the current directory. See my classpath, below]
How Classes are Found:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/tooldocs/findingclasses.html
Examples:
This is my path
PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\BATCH;C:\J2SDK1.4.1\BIN;C:\PROGRA~1\UTILIT~1;C:\PROGRA~1\WIN98RK
This is my classpath
CLASSPATH=.;C:\mjava;C:\mnrx;C:\NetRexx\lib\NetRexxC.jar;C:\j2sdk1.4.1\lib\tools.jar;C:\NetRexx\NrxRedBk

  • Oracle Lite + Resin + jdk1.2.2 or jdk 1.3.1 problem

    Hi!
    Can some one help me this the following:
    I used Oracle Lite database, Resin app server and jdk1.2.2
    When I try to connect my database through simple java-application, all goes fine! But, when I trying to get database communication from my application server and problem arise. First of all dll's such as
    OLJDBC40.DLL, OLAD2040.DLL, OLOBJ40.DLL, OLOD2040.DLL OLSQL40.DLL are in the Path and JVM loads them at runtime. I got connection to DB. Than I try to get some DatabaseMetaData info and got EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (for jdk1.3) and "java.exe has generated error (for jdk1.2.2)" errors from VM.
    So, any idea?
    Any help apriciated...

    Hi,
    I have got the similar problem when I used MS SQL server + Tomcat + JDK1.3.0 via JdbcOdbc driver. In that configuration the JVM crashs very often. It seems that JdbcOdbc's got unstable problem. Then, I tried other type 4 JDBC driver, it works fine and JVM won't crash. Try Sprinta 2000 JDBC driver, it's a type 4 driver and fast stable.

  • Problem with final variables and inner classes (JDK1.1.8)

    When using JDK1.1.8, I came up with following:
    public class Outer
        protected final int i;
        protected Inner inner = null;
        public Outer(int value)
            i = value;
            inner = new Inner();
            inner.foo();
        protected class Inner
            public void foo()
                System.out.println(i);
    }causing this:
    Outer.java:6: Blank final variable 'i' may not have been initialized. It must be assigned a value in an initializer, or in every constructor.
    public Outer(int value)
    ^
    1 error
    With JDK 1.3 this works just fine, as it does with 1.1.8 if
    1) I don't use inner class, or
    2) I assign the value in initializer, or
    3) I leave the keyword final away.
    and none of these is actually an option for me, neither using a newer JDK, if only there is another way to solve this.
    Reasons why I am trying to do this:
    1) I can't use a newer JDK
    2) I want to be able to assign the variables value in constructor
    3) I want to prevent anyone (including myself ;)) from changing the value in other parts of the class (yes, the code above is just to give you the idea, not the whole code)
    4) I must be able to use inner classes
    So, does anyone have a suggestion how to solve this problem of mine? Or can someone say that this is a JDK 1.1.8 feature, and that I just have to live with it? In that case, sticking to solution 3 is probably the best alternative here, at least for me (and hope that no-one will change the variables value). Or is it crappy planning..?

    You cannot use a final field if you do not
    initialize it at the time of declaration. So yes,
    your design is invalid.Sorry if I am being a bit too stubborn or something. :) I am just honestly a bit puzzled, since... If I cannot use a final field in an aforementioned situation, why does following work? (JDK 1.3.1 on Linux)
    public class Outer {
            protected final String str;
            public Outer(String paramStr) {
                    str = paramStr;
                    Inner in = new Inner();
                    in.foo();
            public void foo() {
                    System.out.println("Outer.foo(): " + str);
            public static void main( String args[] ) {
                    String param = new String("This is test.");
                    Outer outer = new Outer(param);
                    outer.foo();
            protected class Inner {
                    public void foo() {
                            System.out.println("Inner.foo(): " + str);
    } producing the following:
    [1:39] % javac Outer.java
    [1:39] % java Outer
    Inner.foo(): This is test.
    Outer.foo(): This is test.
    Is this then an "undocumented feature", working even though it shouldn't work?
    However, I assume you could
    get by with eliminating the final field and simply
    passing the value directly to the Inner class's
    constructor. if not, you'll have to rethink larger
    aspects of your design.I guess this is the way it must be done.

  • Problem with jdk1.3.1_03.  and weblogic6.1

    hey guys,
    i am trying to run a servlet using Weblogic 6.1 and jdk1.3.1_03.
    in the web.xml
    The <!DOCTYPE web-app PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 1.2//EN" "http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd">
    has a problem i guess.. whenever i am starting the weblogic server it throws up saying Error parsing descriptor in WebApplication.. Thi shappenes only when i use jdk1.3.1_03. for all other versions it does not complain..
    any ideas?
    Thanks
    KM

    As far as i know this error is thrown only when the XML deployment descriptor for the particular application gets corrupt. It has got nothing to do with JDK versions.
    If you get any breakthrough on this issue ...be sure to post the fix too.

  • Problem in reading the JDK1.4Logger configuration file from java prog

    I have written a java program and want to log the messages in a log file , I'm using commons logging with JDK1.4logger as logging subsystem .
    I am facing the problem in reading the JDK1.4Logger configuration file which is commons-logging .properties file from my java program as a result my log messages are appearing directly on the screen while I try to run program , during compilation no error is shown . I have tried to set java.util.logging.config.file ="Path of my commons-logging .properties file " by setting system properties also.
    Please suggest the appropriate solution for this .

    Some webservers won't recognise the resource bundle provided in message-resources
    In that case, you need to specify that resource bundle information in web.xml at the time of specifying the action servlet like this. Check for the init-param application.
    <servlet>
        <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
        <servlet-class>org.apache.struts.action.ActionServlet</servlet-class>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>application</param-name>
          <param-value>resource.ApplicationResource</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>config</param-name>
          <param-value>/WEB-INF/struts-config.xml</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>debug</param-name>
          <param-value>2</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>detail</param-name>
          <param-value>2</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>validate</param-name>
          <param-value>true</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <load-on-startup>2</load-on-startup>
      </servlet>In this, the drawback is, you can not specify the key for your resource bundle. In the JSP, you have to access the property like this.
    <bean:message key="label.fName"/>

    None of my filesystems are full. Why does this error occur then.
    I have tried to check the jsp configuration but there is nothing to see there ...
    Can annyone help me with this problem ?
    Thanks
    Ståle Tomten

    Hi
    I solved the problem.
    The server did not have enough memory available to spawn the javac process... Therefor: Not enough
    space.
    I just reduced the memory set up for weblogic and it worked.
    regards

  • Problems with java.lang.Class in JDK1.3

    Hi,
    I have 3 problems with the reflection in java.lang.Class:
    1) In the specification of method java.lang.Class.getDeclaredFields() is wrote:
    "Returns .... This includes public, protected, default (package) access, and private fields ..."
    This means, that all private fields should be return too. But some private methods are not given back. ????
    2) In java.lang.Class.getDeclaredMethods()
    some public methods are not return. ????
    3) In java.lang.Class.getDeclaredMethods()
    If Class is an interface. The same problem like 2) ????
    Are they errors of java.lang.Class in JDK1.3 ????
    Thanks & sincerely.

    Not sure it makes a difference, but you left off the last part of the quote:
    This includes public, protected, default (package) access, and private classes and interfaces declared by the class, but excludes inherited classes and interfaces.
    Are these missing methods from inherited classes, or are they declared in the class itself?

  • SAX parser problem in JDK1.5

    I have parse the xml file using SAX in jdk1.5 environment. During the parsing, it missed the some text content.
    for example
    <employeeid>
    <empid>1001</empid>
    <empid>1002</empid>
    </employeeid>
    If i have parse the above xml file using SAX in jdk1.5 environment. The output is
    1001
    100
    during the parsing , SAX parser misses digit of 2.
    if i have parse the above xml file using SAX in jdk1.4 environment , it is working fine.
    what is the problem in jdk1.5
    please help
    bala

    What I expect the problem to be was discussed recently in a topic titled "SAX Parser Problems" that was started on March 14 at 6:59 AM by JackoBS.
    Read that and see if it fixes your problem. If so, it is not a JDK1.5 problem, but a user error.

    Class.forName("org.postgresql.Driver");
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:postgresql:SchoolA","janeve.george","l0ngl1veme");
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    But an exception is thrown when the code in bold is executed. The exception is as follows:

  • Wsdeploy problem on jdk1.5 with tomcat 4.1.2 and jwsdp 1.0.0.1

    We're trying to upgrade to jdk1.5 from 1.4.0. We're running tomcat 4.1.2 and jwsdp 1.0.0.1. When running wsdeploy, we're receiving the following error:

    Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    I'm seeing exactly the same thing in Netbeans.
    I upgraded to Netbeans 5.0 today and used a JDK1.5 (1.5.0_06) that I already had installed as the JDK for it.
    I see exactly the same problem (web.xml not found) with an ant build script that does a wscompile first and which works fine with my previous Netbeans 4.1 install. My Netbeans 4.1 was using a 1.4.2_02 JDK.

    http://java-virtual-machine.net/tech-faq.html
    is a great link.
    It claims to have a newer, fixed version of problem DLL, SYMCJIT.DLL . Try that.
    The page has an Intel link that is out-of -date. The current Intel link is
    http://support.intel.com/support/processors/pentium4/sb/CS-007990.htm
    "CPUID detection for Intel Pentium 4 processor system"
    In two lines, they recommend:
    dir /s SYMCJIT.DLL
    ren SYMCJIT.DLL SYMCJIT.OLD
    Of course, Java will run slower, but JIT is a machine-specific concept and this *.DLL was coded to fail if it did not recognize the CPU type. Maybe not a great decision, but there you are.

  • Jdk1.4 Timer problem

    Hi all,
    I am using the Timer class provided with JDK1.4. During scheduling, you take the current time as the reference time for relative timer. Everything is ok if i dont change the system time.
    But consider this scenario. If i have a heartbeat timer (which dont worries about the current time) which ticks every 500 milliseconds ( after some 5 to 6 ticks I am disconnecting from the server) but when I change the system time, the heartbeat will tick many number of times depending on the changed time assuming that timout is happened and get disconnected with the server.
    How can I solve this? If it can't be done with jdk timer, please help in identifying a solution for this?
    TIA
    Karthik

    In response to cpolizzi: (Not in original posting order)
    One reason that I do not like the
    javax.swing.Timer is that it requires a
    graphical subsystem to be present.One would expect that from a javax.swing class, yes. Swing is a graphical toolkit.
    Digressing slightly, note that since Java 1.4, the AWT no longer needs a graphical subsystem to be present, so image manipulation (and such) is now possible on headless J2EE servers.
    The Java application created and started both J2SE
    supplied timers each for a one minute delay as well as
    two other threads. One thread does a
    Thread.sleep for one minute and the other
    thread does an Object.wait with a timeout for
    one minute on a locally created object to synchronize
    on. After the two timers and threads were started,
    which I tried to start as close as possible, the main
    application thread also does a Thread.sleep for
    one minute. After the main application thread went to
    sleep, I changed the system clock back by one minute.
    The results: the two threads doing a
    Thread.sleep and Object.wait "woke" back
    up after one minute even despite the change in the
    system clock as did the main application thread also
    doing a Thread.sleep. However, the two J2SE
    supplied timers did not. Instead, each of those
    timers "expired" when the system clock reached one
    minute after the time in which each one was scheduled
    or started. I encountered this behavior on both of
    the JVM's I have loaded on my W2K box.This is 100% correct behaviour, exactly as I would expect.
    I also tried setting the system clock ahead by 30
    seconds, one minute and even five minutes after
    everything is going and it seems that the J2SE timers
    were not affected - each expired right when other
    threads resumed from their sleep and wait. I
    encountered this behavior on both of the JVM's I have
    loaded on my W2K box.Once again, this behaviour is as close to correct as is reasonably possible.
    Without delving into the implementation into either
    one of the J2SE supplied timers, it seems to me that
    both of these timers, when they are effectively
    started ticking, calculate the expected expiration
    time relative to the current system time and use a
    polling mechanism on seperate threads.Perhaps you should have delved.
    java.util.Timer works on a priority queue of tasks. It will wait (using Object.wait()) for the time period required for the next task to expire, and then test if the task has indeed expired, through a comparison to System.currentTimeMillis(). If it hasn't, presumably because of spurious wakeup, it will again wait until it expects the task to expire and retest. Exceptions to this flow may occur if the task queue changes - if a task is scheduled or rescheduled, so the expected closest expiry time is closer than the current waiting time, then the wait will be interrupted and recalculated. If the next task is unscheduled, then the wait will be interrupted and recalculated for the next task in line.
    Thus, if you move the system time back, then the timer will indeed wait until the Task's scheduled expiry date/time has been reached... if you move the system time forward, then when the timer wakes up from its wait, it will realise that the task has indeed expired and it will fire as expected, unless it is deemed too late to fire.
    To summarise, java.util.Timer is an optimal implementation of a single-threaded event scheduler for events scheduled to execute at a particular time in the future, marked by a given date and time. See below for comments on spurious wakeup for why this is so.
    My bottom line expectation is that when it comes to
    relative timers, a duration is a duration regardless
    of what happens to the system's notion of current
    time.You will note that java.util.Timer offers a cron-like facility for tasks to be performed at set times during the day. It can also be used to perform tasks at set time intervals, but such behaviour requires a constant and predictable system time.
    You should further note that changing the system time will not prevent a task executing, unless the system time has been moved later than the allowable execution time for a particular task - which is exactly defined in the documentation, and the most correct behaviour that could be reasonably expected.
    Aside from the fact that I find this behavior of the
    supplied J2SE timers unacceptable, that is if the
    synopsis is correct, I need to find a way around this
    problem. The only reasonable course of action that I
    have is to implement my own timers. Fortunately, the
    impact to any dependent code at work will be isolated
    since I have already abstracted the J2SE timer
    dependencies from the clients.This is correct. If you want custom, specific behaviour in a context that provided system classes do not cater for, then you will need to either find an alternate implementation or build your own.
    Digressing again, all waits should be performed in a while loop to prevent against spurious thread wakeup. The wait condition should hold the definitive break condition for the wait loop... in the case of an accurate timer, the break condition is that the required number of milliseconds have passed since the wait was entered. I challenge you to implement an accurate timer that is not dependent on the system time and is protected against spurious wakeup.
    Spurious wakeup is not just theoretical - I have actually had to rework a non-protected wait() providing a simple delay into a time-dependent looping wait because I was experiencing consistent spurious wakeup in a particular circumstance. I still don't know what the circumstance was exactly, but double-checking against the system time meant I didn't have to (Incidentally, the spurious wakeup didn't recur, so the system was not ever reduced to polling)
    As for the java.util.Timer, each timer has its
    own queue which runs on a seperate VM thread. So, if
    I go and create thousands of timers (ala new
    java.util.Timer()) I get thousands of VM threads.Why would you expect any different? java.util.Timer supports arbitrarily many tasks being scheduled at any particular time (Subject to restrictions as mentioned in the java.util.Timer javadoc documentation), so only one Timer object needs to be created. More than one may be created, so distinct subsystems of a framework can execute completely distinct timers (ie- one subsystem's timer failing for any reason won't bring the other subsystems' timers down). If you dislike such flexibility, feel free to devise your own interface.

    oh. I have found the problem. Acturally, the running enviroment is under microsoft j++, so it could only support jdk1.1, but jsse only support from jdk1.2, so that's the problem why it said that no class found.
    Now I only found that oracle has a solution for SSL which support

  • Jdbc 8.1.6 have problems with jdk1.2

    hi,
    I have a long-story problem with oracle jdbc driver. I want to develop applications using java jdk 1.2. I work with Oracle 8.0.4 server. In oracle reports it says This version does not support jdk1.2.
    So I downloaded jdbc driver 8.1.6 which supports (classes12.zip, ocijdbc8.dll). When I try to load it by drivermanager class it raised oracore8.dll is required error. There is no file named oracore8.dll in oracle 8.0.4 package.
    Later, I found an Oracle version 8.1.5 which still does not support jdk1.2 but has oracore8.dll. I was happy this time. But when I want to load the driver version 8.1.6 it says "entry point for ??? procedure can not be found in oracore8.dll".
    Oracle documents says that jdbc 8.1.6 driver is compatible both with Oracle 8.0.4 and Oracle 8.1.5. But I don't agree with.
    My OS is windows 2000 Professional.
    Any suggestions....Thanks..

    move to the 8.1.6 or 8.1.7 client install and use the matching (same version) jdbc thin and oci drivers.
    this(the client) is required for jdbc oci drivers which reference the .dll you mentioned.
    only 8.1.6 or 8.1.7 are supported on win 2000.
    no other versions were ever certified to run on win 2000.
