JNLP deployment web page improvements

Creating a JWS deployment page is a non-trivial task. It involves either a confusing page for your users, or a combination of messy JavaScript and VBScript to deal with different browser, OS, and JWS versions.
What plans are there for JWS in Java 6 to address this issue?

How about the possibility for redirecting auto download to an intranet server from within the closed enterprise environment, via an extension in the jnlp file, we have many banks which do not want to open there networks, and I agree a better level of detection, we currently use a preloader, which we detect which JVM is being used, if it is correct then we start our application if it is not, we redirect back to an installer page on our customers intranet, though it would be nice if something like this was supported, giving more control to the developer creating the application.

HTTP 403 forbidden message on deployed web page

Hi there,
Since the day i have deployed my web application I am not able to login to the web page.
I am getting error HTTP 403 Forbidden, have permission to view the webpage.
ideally it should have taken to login page and then asked for permission and so on...
What I have done so far?
1. Given all the roles to the said user.
2. Under security relams I have changes the password and tried to login again. But no help.
3. Ironically, there is no error generated under logs....strange !!
4. Check weblogic.xml and web.xml file to user mapping with the server and its role. All looks fine.
5. Downgraded IE from IE 9 to IE 8 in hope if that works fine or that could be the reason.

1. Its Documaker 12.4, I am using IE 9 for Web Server. While using Chrome the page is getting blanked out, that is yet another issue.
2. Console, DocumakeAdministratorHelp,DocumakerDashboardHelp etc are working fine and loading correctly. Since beigning the Admin page is not working.
3. Seeing the premission error I tried to give all the roles to Administrator in Weblogic Security realms, wanted to see if that works but I do not think with DD Only Security any changed would have reflected in actual file. [Role - Documaker Administrator, User- documaker Pwd - JMS pwd]
I did tried to change password, to see if that works but it was not working even then. Still getting Forbidden error
Then I also tried adding servlet alias to the default URL and see if it takes mr to login page; (screen shot attached)
Why all other default page is working with the URL defined and DocumakerAdministrator not working?
I see in the URL that it is taking to ADF control page, can that be looked for permission?

Applet works fine with JNLP... but not on my web page

I can create a seperate JNLP for my applet, and it works fine. However, when I try to insert it into a web page, it does not work. I was wondering if this was a common newbie issue, and how I would go about fixing it. I compiled it using the newest J2EE JDK and the newest JSE (downloaded and installed a couple of weeks ago).
Any help would be greatly appreciated... thank you.

If you want to insert an applet in a web page you use java plug-in, not java web start. You can use Java Web Start to deploy an applet outside of a browser, but plug-in is still the primary applet deployment method, and the only one that can show an applet in a web page.

Well, it actually depends on the server you're using. I'll assume it's Tomcat.
If you want to deploy plain-text or HTML or JSP content, then like Originative said, you can simply drop into the /webapps/myProject directory and access them. You'll still need a /webapps/myProject/WEB-INF/web.xml though, even it's a dummy one.

2 Desired Improvements for the Flash Player 'about' web page

Hi all ...   I'm finally writing to request two improvements to this web page:

As a geek, I have long been annoyed that this web page does not keep its Flash object and does not show the Flash Player plugin version number in the same format as used in the detailed list of latest Flash Player versions for various web browers and operating systems.
This web page is mainly a tool for techs. It can be improved greatly with these two changes (which I'm requesting on May 29, 2013):
1) Near the top of the page, KEEP the flash animation object --
do NOT replace it with an advertisement in a few seconds.
     Keeping the Flash object there allows a knowledgeable user
to right-click on the object to see the Flash plugin version, which
is a way to confirm that the web page's displayed Flash Player
version is correct.
    Currently, the Flash object is replaced within a few seconds
with an advertisement for some other Adobe product. This is
MOST ANNOYING. As a tech, I'm specifically going to this web
page to (a) see that the Flash Player plugin I just installed is
working and/or (b) see what exact version it is.
    Again:   Keep the Flash object in place -- drop the code that
replaces that object with an advertisement.
2) The displayed Flash Player version is formatted with commas,
as in
                You have version
                11,7,700,202 installed
while ALL of the versions in the table below are formatted
(properly) with dots, as in
                Player version
                11.7.700.202
    Make it easier for us mere humans to compare these version
numbers ... rework the HTML code to replace the commas with
dots. (It's not rocket science.)

Thanks, Chris.    That other web page does serve my needs better. I've created a web link to it on my flash drive where I keep the latest Flash plugins for IE and non-IE web browsers.
I still feel that the "About" web page needs the two changes I suggested.
Thanks also for pointing out that the box displaying the version of the installed Flash plugin is actually a Flash .SWF object .... since it is currently static (meaning, it has no animation whatsoever), I had no clue it was a Flash object.
So, I add a 3rd request:   have that version-display SWF object redone, to have a simple animation added and to have its code to display version revised to use periods (dots) in the version numbers. If that object currently is intended and used in some other Adobe (European?) we page, create a new object for the English "About" page.   Or to re-use code, use the version-display object from the page at

on the "About" page as well.
Again, as a techie pressed for time, I want a web page where I see the current version of the installed plugins and the versions of the latest releases, in the same formatting,

I do not accept that the mostly-technical Flash "About" page needs to have marketing materials (an ad).   People go to the About page specifically to see the Flash version info and to prove that Flash is working.

Here's an idea.. why don't you explain exactly what problem you are trying to solve... Gee how clever.
Do you have a page that takes minutes to load? If yes... remove "stuff". That is how to make it faster. There is no other magic way (unless of course the problem is that it takes that length of time to process the page on your server but for the moment we will assume that is not the case)
What stuff should you remove? Content. Images..... as described above. This isn't rocket science. If you are another one of these self described J2EE experts who has made a page that displays 20,000 database records at one time your page is going to be slow until you remedy your shoddy design.
But whatever the real problem is the way to make a page "faster" is to remove "stuff" from it. What that stuff is and what you should remove are entirely known only to you... so really asking anyone else is pointless.

Hoe to deploy an RTP receiver applet on a web page?

Hi... I am currently dealing with the RTPPlayerApplet that is embedded in a web page...
However, i have the following errors when viewing the page...

I wish I could help you but this sample file is very out of date. I found the RTPPlayerApplet class and when I tried to compile it I found that half of the classes use have either been deprecated or don't even exist anymore. My advice is to try another sample.

JNLP Deployment Problem

I need to deploy a JavaFX Applet on a Mac running 1.6.0_33. But so far, I've been unable to do this successfully. Here's what I've tried:
1. I generated a JNLP file and using the generated html page, tried to view the applet. Unfortunately, the dtjava script indicated that I didn't have the correct setup. I was hoping that it would simply download the jfxrt.jar with the appropriate native libraries from Oracle's site, but that didn't happen.
2. I modified the JNLP to serve up an application instead of an applet, and tried accessing the JNLP directly instead of through the web page.
2. I tried serving up the jfxrt.jar and the native libraries separately using an os-specific resources tag in jnlp -- one jar for the native libs, and keep the original jfxrt.jar (that didn't work -- "java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError. Unable to load NativeLibLoader")
3. I tried updating jfxrt.jar with the native libraries (that didn't work -- same error message).
4. I tried copying the new jfxrt.jar file into *$JAVA_HOME/lib* (and not serving the jar file), but it couldn't find javafx.application.Application
5. I tried changing the extended file attributes (there's an attribute com.apple.quarantined) that's associated with the files and I thought that this might be preventing the jfxrt.jar from being accessed. But that didn't work either -- same error.
6. I've tried adding a javafx.runtime.path property to the j2se entry in the JNLP -- same error.
So my question is, how did people deploy JavaFX apps via webstart before Java 7 when the JRE did not include the the javafx runtime jars and libraries? Is there some other location that I should place the jfxrt.jar?

In answer to your earlier comment about letting you know how well switching from applet to application works.
The application "launches" but doesn't startup. The application name appears next to the Apple menu, and it looks like it's trying to startup, but doesn't get any further. The thread dump shows that its executing the call to the Application.launch() method and then sits there.

I noticed that a com.javafx.main.Main class is inserted into the jar if I use the packager, and some additional attributes are added to the jar. It might be good at some point to document some of the magic. Especially the stuff that dtjava.js does to the jfx:? tags in order to turn the jnlp into something that is launchable.
What's odd is that I can run the application from Eclipse without any problem.

Interacting with Web pages

We have developed a J2EE application (jsp, struts, ejbs, etc.) and now have a requirement to interact with hardware at the client's site. The application needs to interact with printers, check readers and DL readers. Can a JWS application interact with the web pages?
For example, when a check is scanned, can the information be displayed on the web page? Additionally, we need to be able to print on both sides of the check. If I tell the application to print, can it respond back to the web application when it is done so the check can be flipped over and printed on the other side?

Java WebStart is "just" a deployment mechanism. An application deployed through JWS can do anything a regular Java application can do (provided it has the appriopriate permissions). This includes talking to whatever kind of server you can think of.
If staying within the sandbox is an issue for your app, you should take a look at the JNLP API, which allows you to do some "safe" things (like printing) on the user's system through interaction with the user. The advantage of staying within the sandbox is not having to sign your app and not having to ask the user for elevated permissions.

ADF web pages not getting displayed inside the frame

I am working with an Oracle Application called "Oracle Transportation Management"...to which our Development Group have asked to log an issue to this forum thread. Please let us know if you can assist:
Client has added an external link to an ADF web page in OTM and when they click the link, it gives an error message saying it cannot be displayed within frame. Per the client, if they add frame busting to the deployment descriptor, it makes other screens in OTM to open in new window.
ERROR:
Warning: Unable to load content in a frame. Frame content will load at the top level.
we tried setting "oracle.adf.view.rich.security.FRAME_BUSTING" to "never", but this makes all selections open in a new window.
How do we correct this?

wrong forum. If this is an existing application that you are not developing then the problem needs to be tracked by the application owner. If this happens to be Oracle Applications then you can use one of their forums here on OTN. Note that normally setting frame bursting to never indeed should solve the problem

Can't open MOST web pages! What the...?

Well if this isn't the strangest thing I have ever seen...
For the past 3 or 4 days my two Macs (Dual 2 Ghz G5 and G4 Mac mini) have only been able to "partially" connect to the internet. What this means is that I can't get mail from my .Mac accounts with Mail.app and MOST web pages will not load, but some will! I can, for example, load digg.com or apple.com, but if I click on the support link on apple.com it will sit there forever and never finish loading. The status bar says "completed 1 of 2 items". This applies to almost every other web page that I can think to try. I've tried Safari 2.0, IE 5.0 and Firefox 1.5 and all get the same results.
On the other hand my Xbox 360 is able to connect to Xbox live just fine and seems to have no problems downloading video or demos. I brought my Windows XP laptop home from work and that seems to work fine for the most part. I have noticed that embedded video and interactive maps don't seem to load on my PC now even though they used to.
I've tried everything I can think of at this point. I've disconnected my router and connected directly to my cable modem with no success. Swapped all of my cables with no results. I've tried entering server IP addresses in case it was a DNS problem, no help. I called my ISP and after they tried to get me to fix Internet Explorer (Ha!) and told me that I must have a virus (sure...), they concluded that it must be my problem because they could see my modem just fine.
I'd assume that this was just a problem with my Mac and that some settings got screwed up, but for the fact that this started affecting both at the same time. That makes me think it must be a network problem that my ISP should fix, but then why would the PC and Xbox work?
So, does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Are there any other tests I could try to pinpoint the source of this enigma? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Baltwo, I've been running Activity Monitor and Network Utility and can see that there is network activity when I try to connect to different sites. Beyond that, I'm not sure what I should be looking for.
BDAqua, I tried both IP addresses on the Mac and PC with no success. If I do a traceroute of one of them on my G5, I get through about 11 steps before it gets stuck and can't make any more progress. I appreciate the modem tip, I seem to have an RCA model # DCM245R. I guess my next step will be to try replacing that.
Boece, I tried clearing my browser cache and history with no luck. However, I was able to go to your recommended web site and download Yasu without any problems! It looks like a nice little app, so I ran it with all of the default settings and restarted, but it did not seem to fix the problem. I have power cycled the router and modem several times with no improvement.
Gnarlodious, I flushed the DNS cache as you suggested, but the issue persists.
I guess beyond trying to replace the cable modem, I'll do a fresh install of OS X on an external drive this weekend and see if I can boot from that and connect any better.
Any other ideas on what might be going on and how I could fix it would be most appreciated.

Safari Wont Open Any Web Page

I just updated my Safari to 3.1.2 and now it wont open any web page. I know my system is fine as I also have Firefox and it works great. I have tried reseting Safari, emptying the cache deleting the plist, but nothing works. I have even tried deleting Safari and downloading the latest version from the apple website and re-installing it. No dice either. Safari seems to be working fine but it wont opent any website. Everything just time's out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try this:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.220
208.67.220.222
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

Can't open some web pages... DOES ANYONE HAVE A FIX THAT WORKS?

I'm unable to open certain web pages. The pages will start to open and than the application will just stall. This seems to have coincided with downloading a security update a while back. I've tried downloading firefox and it too will not open these specific pages. I've searched the forum and as of now I can't find a solution. From what I've hear, Apple isn't even acknowledging that there is an issue. I've repaired permissions, deleted Safari plist files, all with no improvement. I know for a fact that it is not my internet connection, as my powerbook can navigate to these sites without any issues, however my powermac seems to have "forgotten" how to open some web pages.
Any fixes would be enourmously appreciated!

I don't think that reporting the pages to apple would do much good as it's not the pages themselves that are the issue, it's something on my system that prevents them from opening up properly. My laptop will open the pages without any issue, however my desktop isn't able to for god knows what reason. I know others on this board have had similar problems.

HELP: SimplePass that apart from open web pages, can also run applications

Good, to buy my laptop HP Pavilion m6, I came a version of SimplePass in which could add web pages, passwords and also run applications (such as games), but then I gave for updates thinking that a next version would contain improvements; but the version that was installed no longer gave the option of running applications.
Since then and I tried to find the version I had in the beginning, but without results.
If you know SimplePass versions running programs, or if you know a better version leave the download links, please put them in the answers.

Open web page from URL iview in maximized window

Hi,
I would like to open a web page in a <b>maximized</b> browser window, using an URL iView.
I know how to open a window in a separate window, I just can't get it maximized.
N.B. I do <b>NOT</b> want to open in <b>fullscreen</b> mode, i.e. I want a title bar and menus.
Does anyone know how to do it?
I tried to play around with the "window function" property of the iView, but no luck so far. I can't specify a fixed width and height of the target window at design time, as these values may vary at runtime.

Yes, That will require Java Coding, Its true. Basically what the problem here is that to maximize we are trying to fetch the Screen resolution dynamically through Portal that Portal is not allowing us. Thats why I feel that we should go for Java Programing, Create a Par, Deploy it in the server and then create iView for that.
For Creating the Abstract Portal Component for Opening a Maximized Window You should do following steps.
1. Open Your NWDS
2. Create a project ie Portal Application
3. Create Portal Object ie Abstract Portal Component.
