Jnlp files no longer correctly bound

Ever since the latest software update (as of 2009-06-24), all my java webstart files open in dashcode instead of launching.
I tried re-fetching them, but even the new ones just open as text files. Since Java doesn't have an application, just a tool, and anyway I'm not sure which of the java commands I ought to use... I'm a mite lost here.
Any ideas? Should I try to revert to an earlier version of java?

  • JNLP file caching

    I have a JNLP file that does not include <offline-allowed/>. How long does JWS cache such a JNLP file?
    The reason I ask is that I had a bug (my fault) with which the JNLP file didn't correctly reference itself---it referenced a non-existent JNLP file. JWS gave me an error, but the JNLP file it listed in the error report was a different JNLP file altogether---one that I was working on earlier, and that didn't even exist anymore!
    How can I make sure the JNLP file is never cached? Do I have to send all sorts of headers to turn of the cache, such as Pragma: no-cache and the like?
    Garret

    Ooh, this is really bad.
    JWS apparently caches the JNLP uses it for any remote JNLP accessed at the same remote URL ignoring any URL query parameters!.
    I have a JNLP that is dynamically generated at example.com/jnlp?param=value
    Once I've downloaded the application, JWS tucks it away and uses it forever and ever!
    If later I try to access a different JNLP at example.com/jnlp?param=anothervalue, JWS completely ignores the contents of the actual JNLP it gets from the web and uses its locally cached version, which of course has a different href than the one that was generated from example.com/jnlp?param=anothervalue. JWS then tries to go get the JNLP from the wrong href, either retrieving a different JNLP or giving an error.
    What can I put in my JNLP to tell JWS not to cache it? Why doesn't JWS look at the whole URL, or look at times and dates, or something rather than just blindly caching my JNLP?

  • How to get around safari no longer launching jnlp files with 6.0.3?

    I'm both a user of Java Webstart applications and a publisher (at work and for private projects)
    Given the latest update to Safari that no longer launches a JNLP file I've had no choice but recommend that my clients switch to Firefox or Chrome in order to continue using the Java Webstart applications.
    The fact that clicking the button or link to launch the JNLP appears to do nothing, that sometimes the JNLP is downloaded and other times not, and it never launches webstart,  makes it impossible to support clients and makes the applications appear completely broken.
    Is there no workaround to this? Some way to get Safari to run the JNLP file?

    For security reasons, WebStart application files are now downloaded to a hidden folder and are not launched automatically. Although you may find instructions on the Internet for defeating this protection, I strongly advise against doing so.
    The right way to launch a WebStart application is to click the Downloads button at the right end of the Safari toolbar and  then double-click the icon of the JNLP file you just downloaded. If you want to save the file for later use, click the magnifying-glass icon to reveal it in the Finder, and then move it.

  • Configure jnlp file to correct encoding?

    In my application I need to work with ISO-8859-1, because I have some special characters like ç, ã, á...
    I configure my jnlp file to ISO-8859-1, but when I download the application web start don't show correct characters in "<title>compensação</title>", I didn't see correct characters "çã".
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
    If someone can help me, I a new web start user, I may have forgotten to set some item.
    I'm using java 1.5 with tomcat 5.5.
    Thanks!!

    I solved a similar issue through unicode entities, ç should be &#0231; (charmap will help you with the other chars).
    Bye.

  • I can no longer access a password protected Numbers file with the correct password. Error message only says the file "cannot be opened."

    I'm using Numbers version 3.2.2.
    Suddenly I cannot access my password protected Numbers file with the correct password. I have the correct password written down so I know I haven't made a mistake.
    The response box that pops up says that the file cannot be opened. There are no other options for me to choose from.

    Also, I tried to open it through an older version of Numbers but it sent this error message.

  • Deploying a JNLP file to corporate users?

    When it comes to Java, I'm pretty clueless. I was a VB programmer years ago, and now I deal mostly with Python apps.
    I have a corporate client with ~80 workstations. One of their primary business applications is deployed by a jnlp file. Their tech support said to go to http://theirapplication.com/app.jnlp and the program will install.
    I have tried a few test methods of getting this pushed out to every user.
    The first was to deploy a shortcut to their desktop called "TheirApp" which pointed to that jnlp file.
    In practice, that launches IE, downloads the JNLP file, checks if the app is installed, installs it if it isn't, and then runs the app. Plus, the app drops a new shortcut onto the desktop for directly launching the program. The shortcut points to javaws and then a long path to some per-user cache folder. So now users are confused by two shortcuts.
    When the app initially starts, it asks for a bunch of settings--like really long account numbers. All this info appears to be per-user. So when users sit down at a different workstation (which happens frequently in their environment), clueless users are asked to install the app and put in all those initial settings.
    The second method was a failure--I tried deploying a shortcut to start javaws pointing to that cache folder. I didn't really expect it to work. On new machines it failed because that app hadn't been installed into that cache folder yet. On existing installs, it would work for users that had previously installed it, but new users wouldn't work because the cache folder is stored under a different users settings folder.
    So I guess my questions for the Java community would be these:
    Is there a way to deploy a java webstart app per-machine?
    Is there a way to share the same cache folder between all the users on the network so they see all the same settings?
    Does anyone have similar experiences and suggestions on how to better deploy jnlp applications?
    Thanks for reading.
    -Aaron

    To pre-install you can use the -import option.
    Something like
    javaws -import -silent http://whateverTheServer.ext/whateverTheJnlp.jnlpYou could even copy all files to a local server and override codebase with -codebase option.
    You could try (but I've heard people complain about it) to use the -system option so that all machine users run same instance (app is installed once per machine, not once per user and machine).
    About properties, the most common way to store data is to put them in the user.home dir, have a look there, maybe you can spot out a file (or a directory) and just tell user to copy their setting on a USB drive and paste them (into user.home) on any other machine they're gonna use.
    Bye.

  • .XMP files no longer appear as sidecars--how to clear metadata?

    Photoshop CS2 ver 9.0.2
    Bridge ver 1.0.4.6
    ACR ver 3.7
    eMac G4 800 MHz
    Mac OS X ver 10.4.9
    1 Meg RAM
    12 GB available disk space
    Bridge and Photoshop are set to save metadata in .XMP sidecar files, but sidecar files no longer appear. That is, up till a few days ago, .XMP files appeared when I opened raw files, but no longer. The drop-down menu is still set to save metadata in sidecar files.
    Cannot clear metadata in Bridge. I can select "Camera Raw Defaults" in ACR, but that doesn't clear cropping.
    1) How do I return already-stored metadata to .XMP files?
    2) How do I get PSCS2 to store future metadata as .XMP files?
    3) How do I clear metadata currently stored in ACR/PS database?
    4) What did I do to cause system to store metadata in ACR/PS database despite being set to save in sidecar files?
    Thanks.
    --HC

    Noel,
    Excellent point.  I have no idea.  Maybe this was only working for
    .PSDs/etc. (which contain the metadata embedded in the file itself[,
    right?]).  I may have been deluding myself this whole time.  It's
    possible that it never really worked the way I thought it did to begin with.
    But, more specifically, here's the current question:  If I have this
    file (which is a backup from long ago):
    J:\backup of M90\Documents and Settings\philipt\Application
    Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Database
    ...assuming that drives are currently mapped (by drive letter) the same
    way they were when that backup was made), can I just replace the current
    file:
    C\Documents and Settings\philipt\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Database
    ...with the one from J: and expect it to work correctly?
    What's the worst that can happen if I do this?
    BTW, the file on J: is 2,569 Kb; the (new) one on C: is 2,754 Kb.  This
    doesn't seem to bode well, since the old one (J:) should have much, much
    more data in it (assuming that the "Database" file per se is where the
    metadata is stored): the older file has complex,
    multi-tiered data for 10s of 1000s of images.  "??"
    Thanks again for your willingness to help with this!!
    Aloha,

  • Always prompted to save JNLP file

    Hello! We have a simple servlet that basically just queries a few things off of the HttpServletRequest and spits back a dynamically generated JNLP file. For some reason, when we were running with Tomcat 4.0.6 this worked fine, but with the upgrade to Tomcat 4.1.29 it does not. IE always prompts to open or save the file - it never just launches JWS automatically anymore.
    Any suggestions on what we can fix? I'll put the interesting parts of the servlet below.

    The underlying problem is a combination of tomcat 4/5 being more standard and IE being less standard. Tomcat changed to automatically add ";charset=ISO-8859-1" to the end of the Content-Type header while IE appears to not correctly process the Content-Type header.
    IE maintains a list of known MIME types in the registry under [HKCR]\MIME\Database\Content Type. There you will find an entry for 'application/x-java-jnlp-file' which indicates that this MIME type is treated as a file with the suffix '.jnlp'.
    Unfortunately, IE treats EVERYTHING after the Content-Type: as the MIME type NOT just the stuff between the ':' and the ';'. Thus instead of looking for a registry entry for 'application/x-java-jnlp-file' it winds up looking for 'application/x-java-jnlp-file;charset=ISO-8859-1" and doesn't find it.
    If you duplicate the 'application/x-java-jnlp-file' entry with the name 'application/x-java-jnlp-file;charset=ISO-8859-1' everything works. Alternatively, if you make sure the 'file name' portion of the URL which requests the jnlp spec has the suffix '.jnlp' IE will work correctly. If you are generating the jnlp spec via your own servlet you can control the behavior of Tomcat by calling 'setCharacterEncoding(null)' on the response object (note this is not a method of the HttpServletResponse interface, you have to cast to the underlying concrete type).
    So, I think IE's use of the 'suffix' is non-standard and IE's handling of the Content-Type header field is just broken. If you can make the requesting URL have the .jnlp suffix you are ok; otherwise, there does not appear to be a good solution.

  • Console does not launch OVM 3.1.1, Win7x32 Firefox15/IE8 - Empty .jnlp file

    I have installed Oracle VM Manager 3.1.1, and two Oracle VMS servers; all seems to have gone pretty well after some learning curve. After success here, I created Clone of the most recent PeopleTools 8.5.2 and PeopleSoft HCM templates, and was able to start those machines. (Or at least, the Virtual Machine status shows "Running..." - read on.)
    However, when I try to launch the console, I get no success. First, when accessing the VMM server over HTTPS (port 7002), Java doesn't even try to start. Instead, basically, I get a screen blink and nothing else when I try to Launch Console from HTTPS. But when using HTTP:myVMM:7001, I get further. The Java logo appears briefly, and then I get "Application Error - Unable to launch the application" dialog. When I click on Details, I see the following under the Exception tab:
    JNLParseException[ Could not parse launch file. Error at line 0.]

    Looking further into this, the .jnlp that's presented to JAVA by Launch Console is zero bytes in length. What might cause the .jnlp file to be empty?

    Thank you very much for your rapid reply, SPA2! It's encouraging!
    You named the file correctly, and there is only one ovm_rasproxy-ws.jnlp on the system. It is at /u01/app/oracle/ovm-manager-3/machine1/base_adf_domain/servers/AdminServer/tmp/_WL_user/ovm_core/tgzc2b/war/ovm_rasproxy-ws.jnlp. It is not empty - has a size of 1028 bytes, and the contents are listed at the bottom of this message.
    I don't know how to start the vncviewer directly from the OVM Manager machine. I did install the package (twice, in fact... and the second time stated "package tightvnc-java-1.3.9-3.noarch is already installed" There are no executables in the tightvnc-java-1.3.9-3.noarch.rpm package, and I have not found indication of what the URL would be. Can you help with that?

    Also - to further check this out, I did Save instead of Open from Firefox (IE does not give that option). Firefox saved a 0 byte file. I really appreciate the help.

  • Indicated instalation path of the aplication in JNLP file

    Hi everybody,
    First of all, i would like to apologize about my english. Sorry about it.
    I got a problem with a deploymet of an application using Java Web Start.
    My application deploys correctly but i need a way to indicate where's the path i want to download the app.
    I've been read all documentacion about it but the argument productpath of the JNLP file doesn't works.
    I try a lot of differents ways in JNLP file, like:
    <application-desc main-class="MyPrincipalClass">
    <argument>-java</argument>
    <argument>-productpath</argument>
    <argument>DownloadedPath</argument>
    </application-desc>
    But any of them work.
    I need a way to indicate where the app must be downloaded when JNLP file is executed.
    Thanks in advanced.
    Regards from Isaac.

    ..the boss would like to have the possibility of decide
    where the application would be installed (for example: c:/MyApp/).Win XP?Start | Settings | Control Panel
    Java
    General (tab - default)
    'Temporary Internet Files' Settings.
    'Location:'  ChangeThis is how the end user (or their system administrator)
    can choose the installation location for Java Web-Start
    applications.
    Explain that to boss, and the end user, and I think
    they will be far less interested in the application
    itself offering an independent installation path.
    (after all - If I want my JWS apps. to be stored
    on the 'shared data' drive, I do not want to have
    to configure it for every single Web Start app. -
    just the plug-in - once)
    I've seen that this could be possible using
    productpath property in JNLP but this doesn't work.Huh? I do not know what you are refering to.
    Can you provide a net reference for 'productpath'?
    If chossing installation path it's not possible, ...It is (ultimately - though I want you to talk your
    boss out of such nonsense), as mentioned by
    Orclev using an 'installer' element - but that will be
    at the loss of a lot of other functionality (also as
    mentioned).
    i'd like to know how can obtain (during the
    downloaded process) the path where the
    application is being installed. Still not convinced the app. needs it, but on
    that matter, is your application running in
    a trusted environment? It is far easier to
    determine app. classpath if that is the case
    (in fact I am not sure it can be done in an
    untrusted app. - and that might be a security
    problem).

  • Dynamic generation of jnlp file

    I'm dynamically generating a jnlp file using a jsp to pass run-time parameters over to my Java application thusly:
    <%
    response.setContentType("application/x-java-jnlp-file");
    String userName = request.getParameter("username");
    String password = request.getParameter("password");
    String batchId = request.getParameter("batchid");
    out.println("<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\"?>");
    out.println("<jnlp ");
    out.println("spec=\"1.0+\" ");
    out.println("codebase=\"http://server/directory\" ");
    out.println("href=\"this jsp file\">");
    ... other jnlp stuff...
    out.println("<application-desc main-class=\"myApp.myClass\">");
    out.println("<argument>" + userName + "</argument>");
    out.println("<argument>" + password + "</argument>");
    out.println("<argument>" + batchId + "</argument>");
    out.println("</application-desc>");
    out.println("</jnlp>");
    And use args[] to attempt to get the passed parameters in the Java application:
    userName = args[0];
    password = args[1];
    batchId = args[2];
    However, they don't seem to be passed over to the application as I get NullPointerExceptions. If I try to trace the state of the arguments by adding:
    FileOutputStream f = new FileOutputStream("w:output.txt");
    BufferedWriter w = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(f, System.getProperty("file.encoding")));
    w.write("userName: " + userName);
    w.write("password: " + password);
    w.write("batchId: " + batchId);
    f.flush();
    f.close();
    The output file is completely empty.
    1. Am I passing the arguments in wrongly?
    2. Why is the output not being written in the file?
    My thanks in advance for any assistance offered.
    Erkton

    Erkton,
    I use a similar approach and it does work. The main gotchas I found were typos. I would suggest temporarily changing the
    response.setContentType("application/x-java-jnlp-file");
    line to
    response.setContentType("text/xml");
    and looking at your JNLP file as XML and verifything that you got everything write. Look for beginning and end tags, stuff like that.
    Once you have it right then switch it back to JNLP.
    One other thing to look out for is Internet Explorer doesn't like jnlp files unless they end with a .jnlp extension. I had to rename my jnlp files to end with .jnlp instead of .jsp for IE to parse them correctly. I don't think thats the issue you are running into, but you may want to look out for it.

  • Files not renaming correctly, what can I do?

    I made selects and renamed my raw files in Lightroom. I sent off the catalog to an editor to color correct, and now my raw files aren't linking. It appears that even though in lightroom, the images seem to be renamed, the actual raw files did not get renamed. I have never had this happen before, and it's now happened twice in a row. Is there any way to fix this without manually going in and reordering and renaming? I'm so sick about this, feel like I just wasted hundreds of dollars on editing.
    help. Thanks.

    selected picks and organized
    selected all
    Library > rename photos
    removed non-picked files from catalog
    put copy of catalog and smart previews in a folder and zipped it
    uploaded to FTP server
    they edited for color balance
    downloaded from FTP server to HD
    unzipped and opened the file, and the images say they are all missing
    Looked at raw files, and none of the raw files are renamed
    previews have been renamed in catalog, so original files no longer link up with previews.
    I have used this editor many times before, and I've never had this problem.

  • Does the Browser cach the jnlp-file?

    I have a problem, I think with the browser's caching. As I modify the *.jnlp-File, the old version is loaded, not the new one!
    Or is the old version cached by the webStart-Caching-Mechanism?
    To update the jnlp-file, sometimes it is helpful to clear the Clients webStart cache.
    Is that correct?
    regards,

    The browser does in fact cache the jnlp and it can be a real problem. If there is no expiration on the JNLP then the browser may load it from cache instead of going to your web server on the next access. This means you may have modified your JNLP on the server for a new release, but users can start your application WITHOUT GETTING THE LATEST JNLP!
    You can solve this problem by serving the JNLP file from your own servlet (or other HTTP serving technique) and setting the expire header. Setting it to 0 does the right thing.
    Do NOT however, set "Pragma", "no-cache". no-cache stops the browser from writing the JNLP to the file system...this in turn causes a problem when Web Start tries to find the jnlp file after the browser starts Web Start....the jnlp file is not there.
    Note that the JnlpDowloadServlet provided by Sun in the Web Start developers kit does NOT expire the JNLP file...you must fix this code yourself if you want it to work correcly. Sun was supposed to make this source code available but I can't find it anywhere. We used a de-compiler to de-compile the code, fix it and re-jar it.

  • Accented character encoding in JNLP files

    Hi everyone:
    Maybe I am missing something trivial, but I am having trouble encoding French accented characters in my JNLP files. For example, I tried to encode the name "Qu&eacute;bec" as follows:
    - Qu&eacute;bec: the file is not parsed completely and the application-desc tag appears to be missing. I know that this problem has already been reported by German and Swedish fellows.
    - Qu&eacute;bec: the file is parsed correctly but the &eacute; tag is not converted to "&eacute;."
    - Qu&#233;bec: the &#233; tag is not converted either.
    - Qu\u00d9bec: no conversion...
    - Qu\00d9;bec: still no conversion...
    How should I encode my accented characters so that they appear correctly in Java Web Start presentation windows?
    Thanks in advance for any help...

    Rather than trying some kind of escape sequence, how about just storing the file as whatever "native" codepage your system likes and then converting it to UTF-8 with the native2ascii utility for deployment (not ideal, but it may work):
    As mentioned here:
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/docs/developersguide.html#dev
    Which links to here:
    http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/docs/tooldocs/win32/native2ascii.html
    (the document appears to be identical for the various JDK releases--if you want the 1.3 version, just change 1.1 to 1.3 in the URL above).
    I don't know if this is simpler on not. HTH!

  • Creating .jnlp files from .java files

    Last resort: Ask on the forums. I'm having a lot of trouble creating .jnlp files with only a .java file. For some reason if I do create project, the project does not run correctly, but when I make the file and run the file alone, it works perfectly fine. Most of the tutorials that I have read online ask me to do weird manifest .class stuff (in order to make JAR files, which i have failed to do even after attempting to make one after 3 hours). And still, when it comes to make the .jnlp file, I don't quite understand anything. When putting it on the web, I'm planning not to use php (html is in my mind right now), and I have aborted every single attempt at making the JAR files and whatnot.
    At this point, I'm not asking for anything other than a link to a tutorial that actually works, because all that I have tried (for the JAR files, especially) have been giving me errors. By the way, one really bothersome output that comes up is the "illegal option: j" when I use the Tool for the JAR file, and I have no idea what that means--I google it and find nothing. The .java itself extends JPanel, so it isn't really an applet.
    How to: Run an Applet
    Create an Applet Class by clicking File > New > File > File Type > Java Classes > Applet Class.
    Enter a name and path for the applet and click Finish.
    Build the file by pressing F7.
    Create an Applet HTML file by clicking File > New > File > File Type > Other > HTML Applet.
    Enter a name and path for the applet and click Finish.
    Open the HTML file in JCreator and modify the applet tag to match the name of the applet class.
    Open the Project Settings window and select the HTML file as the Run parameter.
    Click the Run Project button.It isn't really a code, but I tried doing this and the HTML Applet said code = ".class" Again, I don't have a class for the file. And when you do the "File > New > File > File Type > Java Classes > Applet Class," you get the .java file and a folder that says "components, with two classes in it. I was completely befuddled.
