JOptionPane is slow - sometimes

I am using JOptionPane to solicit input to my program.
I notice that if the program is not experiencing any user interaction for a period of time (several hours) then the JOptionPane window takes a long time to come up. Sometimes I have to wait about 2 seconds or more. Henceforth It comes up quickly until after I wait another long period of time. It is as though java is remembering something only immediately after using JOptionPane.
Can anybode tell me what is happening here? Why does it take longer to come up after being inactive for a long while, then subsequently comes up quickly until the next day? My application runs 24/7.
Here is my section of code from a KeyListener inner class:
if (k == e.VK_D)
String input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter name");
if(input != null) // test if cancel not pressed
if(input.toString().equals("")) {} // test if something entered
else
// action code in here
}

Thanks camikr.
I guess that sounds plausable except that the program is always running (collecting data) so why should JVM need to swap out?
Is there a way to have it stay in memory?

  • Macbook incredibly slow sometimes

    Hello,
    I'm using a macbook I've had for 3+ years. It's 2.16GZ Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDRS SDRAM.
    Sometimes--once every few days, it runs unbearably slow, to the point of being unusable. For instance, it'll take 5 minutes or longer to open a word document, and the same amount of time once I've pressed "print" for the actual print box to pop up. During these times, the typing is also very slow--sometimes I wait upwards of a few minutes for text to pop up on the screen (and if I type more than a few letters at a time, nothing comes up). When this happens the fan usually runs on high. Even "at best" there's still a 5-10 second delay between, say, pressing the finder icon and the actual box popping up and displaying words.
    I've already reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard) (clean install) and had the main fan replaced (it was overheating). However, I'm still having the same problem. Apple didn't do anything about it when I sent it in, and I've been told that this is "normal." I have 120GBB hard drive, and recently wiped it as well, thinking that was the reason. I now have 80GB free, and am experiencing the same problem. I've also repaired disk permissions and run the install disks several times.
    Typically, I run safari, word/powerpoint (sometimes both) and another small program or two.
    Specs are below:
    At best:
    Free: 72.5
    Wired; 182.5
    Active: 547.9
    Inactive: 221.3
    Used: 950.8
    VM Size: 117.7 GB
    Page Ins: 290.3 mb
    Page Outs: 23.9 mb
    Swap used: 130.8 mb
    At almost-worst (nearly frozen, taking between 30 seconds and 1 minute for text to show up after typing):
    Free: 12.9 MB
    Wired: 192.8 MB
    Active: 544 MB
    Inactive: 269.7 MB
    UsedL 1008. 4 MB
    VM Size: 124.36 GB
    Page Ins: 1.13 GB
    Page Outs: 603.3 MB
    Swap Used: 1.46 GB
    Thanks for your help in advance!

    You need more RAM. Snow Leopard requires 1GB to run, and you'll want at least double that in order to have a reasonably good computing experience. More RAM would be even better.
    You can go to crucial.com and use their memory scanner to determine the type of RAM you need. You can also go to OWC at http://www.macsales.com.

  • Mail extremely slow, sometimes cannot connect

    Mail has become incredibly slow: sometimes it take thirty seconds to load a text message with two lines.
    Sometimes, upon starting up, it can't connect at all.
    At the same time, the internet connection is fine, and all browsers work.
    I'm on 10.8.5 with a first gen retina MacBook Pro with 512 Gb disc and 16Gb ram.
    Should I reinstall Mail? What could be the reason for the sluggish performance (it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes Mail seems to work fine, but very often I get "Loading..." forever.
    And, again, I'm getting the zigzag sign for interrupted connection. Why doesn't Mail work?
    update: I checked activity: Mail is constantly logging out of my mail accounts, and then has to log back in, which is why it's so slow. How can I prevent Mail from logging out?
    Also: Mail gets stuck in the middle of downloading messages. The blue bar in the activity window only goes halfway, and then is stuck for fifteen to thirty seconds... which is the time it needs to get me my mail.

    Sometimes this problem can be cured by tidying up the Keychain, where login info is stored. You can do this by opening Keychain Access in your Utilities folder. Find the location and login info for the mail account. Delete, say, all but the most recent one. Does that fix the problem?  If not, go back and delete even the recent one. When Mail asks you for your login stuff, give it, then check the box which says to store it in the keychain.  Sometimes just doing this last step is enough to clear up the annoying login windows.

  • Why is it YouTube loads really slow sometimes even when I'm connected to wifi ?

    Why is it YouTube loads really slow sometimes even when I'm connected to wifi ?

    Hard to say. The speed of your Internet connection. Congestion on YouTube's servers, problems at any point in between you and them... When you are connected to WiFi, you will get a substantially higher resolution version of some videos than you do on 3G.
    Are you using the youtube app or are you just accessing it via a web browser.

  • Why does my 2012 macbook pro become slow sometimes?

    I've purchased my 2012 4gb ram Macbook ram w/ 500 gb hard drive around September. It started off extremely fast the first 4 months (when I had mavericks), but there we're problems with the Video playback towards the last 4 months (It would Freeze and unfreeze & the the audio-video sync would be way off after 30 mins of netflix, which would cause the whole computer to slow down). So, I installed the Yosemite update, which made it even worse to the point where my macbook was unusable. With yosemite, I'd have an average of 500mb ram free memory available, sometimes even lower. Now, I did a manual restore to OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, and I see the major difference in speed.  I could use safari now & get an average of 1.47 gb of free ram available (with just the safari application open). Now, the video playback issue still occurs sometimes & having about 4 programs open does make the computer slower than usual, but not as often. I'm hoping this is just a ram issue, becuase I'm expecting on upgrading my ram to a 16gb ram or higher while still on Mountain Lion just to be able to run Logic Pro & Adobe Premiere in the near future. If its not a ram issue which is causing this problem on my macbook, I'd be ****** because I'd be spending almost $200 on a ram upgrade and it not resolving this issue would kill me. Could someone help? Ill even take a Diagnose test like Etrecheck if you need me to. Thanks.

  • Macbook pro runs slow, sometimes it is more than a minute to load a webpage and sometimes freezes.

    My MacBook Pro is running very slowly, sometimes more than a minute to open a webpage or access a link on the page.  Using Safari and sometimes it freezes and the force quit window doesn't appear using option-command-escape.  Then only holding down the power button shuts down the computer.  Thanks for any help.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Running Extremely Slow sometimes

    Hi, for the last few days my laptop has been running very slow to the point where I can't do anything. If I restart or shutdown and turn it back on, it still runs very slow and takes about 10 minutes to start up. It goes away though sometimes. For instance, right now it is running fine but I'm scared it might slow down again. I was wondering if you knew how to fix this or what's causing this? Thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    How much RAM do you have?
    I believe the amount of free hard drive space is your problem which is not adequate.
    Coped from Problems from Insufficient RAM and Free Hard Disk Space.
    As a rule of thumb: if the Available space on your Mac OS X startup disk is less than the larger of 5 Gb, or ten percent of its Capacity, it is time to free some disk space.

  • Sometimes my internet is very slow, sometimes none at all... DSL light is solid.....

    Internet light blinks rapidly , or goes out totally. Wireless light flashes. Sometimes unplugging/ replugging wireless modem helps. Sometimes not. There is a splitter / filter where the modem connects to phone jack.

    hi, you wrote "There is a splitter / filter where the modem connects to phone jack" is it possible that somehow the filter has been inserted between the modem and phone jack instead of between any telephones or fax machines or answering machines and the phone jack? also, when your connection is slow, can you try connecting with a cable instead of wirelessly? if you can and the problem goes away, maybe you have some new source of interference on the wireless frequency your modem is using....like from a new cordless phone or baby monitor? or even from a neighbor using same wireless channel.... this is changeable in the modem settings if that's the case.... good luck

  • Sending mail with "sent" is fast, but copying the sent mail is very slow, sometimes takes a minute; can it be speeded up?

    After hitting "send", a screen comes up showing a moving bar "copying the mail to the sent folder", the bar goes fully right on
    the screen but then I must wait, sometimes a minute for the copying process to complete. Then I always get a screen message
    next that says in effect could not copy, so I close that screen and then go to my sent folder and the email I sent shows up. So,
    the copy process is very slow and then I get a message could not copy, but in fact a copy does appear in sent folder????
    Thank you

    You do not mention how big is the Sent folder.
    I would first try to archive a load of old sent emails. This will reduce the file size. Maybe the delay is due to a large file.
    Set up Archive Options:
    * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/archived-messages
    choose to archive by month and year and keep folder structure.
    Archive anything older than a month.

  • Mplayer seeks extremely slow (sometimes)

    Sometimes mplayer is extremely slow when seeking in files, e.g. by using the arrow keys or page up/down. At one time I can instantly seek through the whole file and the next minute it takes more than 5-10 seconds to skip 10 seconds in the same file. It seems to come and go at random times.
    Anyone else notice this?

    Sorry, I skipped the first part of the output. This is the output when I play the file and seek through the end. Nothing abnormal it seems.
    Changing the video driver doesn't help either and because it happens and dissapears randomly on all my videos I guess it's an obscure bug. Thanks for the help anyway!

  • Msi Ge60 apache pro slow sometimes

    Hi, i have the ge60 now 2 month and did some reinstall because the laptop is at some point very slow.
    Games like call of duty are at that moment unplayeble other things like google chrome and internet are slow to.
    i did a clean reinstall but then it is good for several days, and then it starts out of nothing.
    I cant figure out if the computer is updating someting. nothing runs on background no viruscanner or someting else.
    where could i start finding this problem? does anyone reconize this?
    its a ge60 apache pro  gtx860
    also the computer cannot be shut down when this happens.. it goes to the Log in screen.. and then i shut down again and does it again

    Are you having the FreeDOS unit? or you have a pre-installed OS?
    Mind to share the Resource Monitor page? Check if there is any unusual usage of the CPU, memory or disks.
