JProgressBar - NetBeans

Question

I just started working with NetBeans IDE and making GUI's, and have a question about the jProgressBar: When I use a Thread.Sleep(int) to delay for a time, it will do something like this:
for(int j = 0; j<=100;j++)
Thread.sleep(300);                //this makes it wait for 30000 miliseconds
jProgressBar1.setValue(j);       //then does all of the setValue()'s at once
}I want it to wait for 300 miliseconds, then set the value one more then it was, etc. so it fills up gradually. How do I do this?

But do you know why Thread.sleep(300) doesn't have the desired effect?
