JSF tags and produced html

Hi all i have a question. Why do the JSF tags produce html that is laid out with tables rather than divs? I've tried to get the jsf framework adopted in my organisation and its this, and i quote 'Poor html' that is blocking the adoption.
Any one got a good answer i can take to the CTO please?
The only thing i could come up with was cross browser compatibility.

The CTO is about ten years out of date if he is allergic to HTML tables. Everybody does it except wannabe HTML gurus who invented this 'issue'. It might have been a problem once. Not now.

  • JSF tags within normal HTML tags (jsfc attribute)

    Hi all,
    I was just browsing some JSF and Acegi information and I found the following tutorial:
    http://www.javakaffee.de/blog/2006/07/04/jsfacegi-authentication-with-a-backing-bean/
    In it, the author uses regular html tags but with attributes that allow JSF functionality.
    <input jsfc="h:inputText" id="inputUsername" value="#{authenticationController.username}" />I have never seen JSF done like this, could anyone inform me as to what is the jsfc property is?
    Thanks!
    Illu

    Ah, I found out my query. It's a feature in Facelets I believe. The link below has the info.

  • JSF How to produce HTML pages without any Javascript.

    Hi all
    Is there any way to configure an ADF-BC/JSF project so that the resulting JSF pages contain no JavaScript at all ? I have tried adding
    <client-validation-disabled>true</client-validation-disabled>in my adf-faces-config.xml file but I I still see javascript on my pages.
    Thanassis

    Hi,
    use JSF components only (no ADF Faces)

  • JSF tag inside another JSF tag

    Hi,
    Note: It's a bit of a long post but I will try to cut to the point without leaving behind any pertinent details.
    I've created some simple custom JSF tags in the past. The tags usually consisted of one or two attributes that would be beans. The tags would then print out the data for those beans or process them and then output the results.
    What I am trying to do now is a bit more complicated for me. I have a JSP page with a scriplet on it. It iterates over a bean containing a list of items. The loop adds those items to an HTML select menu one at a time. The outline of the code looks similar to this,
    <% extract data List from the bean and store it in variable called dataList %>
    <select>
    <%
      for (int i=0; i<dataList.size(); i++;){
        ListItem item = dataList.get(i);
        String name = item.getName();
        String value = item.getValue();
    %>
    <option value="<%=value%>">
      <%=name%>
    </option>
    <%}%>
    </select>
    <h:commandButton id="gobtn" action="go_to_page" actionListener="#{action.fetch}" value="Go"/>What I want to do is take all the above code and put it into a custom JSF tag. This tag would contain all the scriplet code, output the HTML code and also the commandButton code at the end.
    All of that is pretty easy except for the commandButton part. I am not sure how to output a commandButton from a custom JSF tag. How do I pass it the action.fetch part for the actionListener attribute? Can I create a commandButton object in my custom JSF tag and pass it this information?
    I've followed a tutorial at this site in the past but it doesn't go into too much detail
    http://www.exadel.com/tutorial/jsf/jsftutorial-customcomponents.html
    Any help is appreciated,
    Nick

    I guess I missed some information. The dataList in the bean is stored in a HashMap. So some work has to be done with the bean before hand to determine what list to pull out and then "massage" it a bit for viewer consumption. This is not easily accomplished with the standard JSF html tags, hence my going with a custom tag approach.
    Processing this bean and getting a list from the Hashmap in the bean before displaying it is easy, so is outputting the HTML. The hard part is rendering the commandButton with all the attributes I listed previously.
    Is there a way in general to have other JSF tags nested inside a custom JSF tag?

  • Non-JSF tags appear at top of the page

    I'm using JSF with AlphaBlox which doesn't have JSF tags, and I need to import an Alphablox page to the body of my JSF-enabled jspx. When I use jsp:include, c:import or ordinary iframe the contents of the imported page appears at the top of the page. It looks like all the non-JSF tags are cast outside, to the top, Is there any way to overcome this?

    To use html tags with jsf with no trouble, you can also use the htmlPanel.

  • Programatic Value/MethodBindings with JSF tags

    I read thread http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=427&thread=526026 "Using JSP scriplets in the JSF tags". The following was suggested but not recomended in order to use JSF Tag EL with a programatically set value.
    <%
    String myString="MyLabel";
    request.setAttribute("myString", myString);
    %>
    <h:view>
    <h:outputText id="myID" value="#{myString}" />
    </h:view>
    Is it possible to set up ValueBinding's and MethodBindings in a similar way or would it be better to dump the JSF tags and use JSF altogether programatically. Below is an example that seems like it should work but the result is the ValueBinding.toString() ends up being the value.
    thanks in advance;
    <%
    FacesContext context = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    Application app = context.getApplication();
    ValueBinding vb= app.createValueBinding("#{MyBean.member}");
    request.setAttribute("vb", vb);
    %>
    <h:inputText id="myid" value="#{vb}"/>

    --right ValueBinding.getValue() takes a FacesContext, which you definately would not want to pass as and arg in El, even if you could I would think.
    To answer your question, we are generating several software layers based on an MDA approach. We reverse engineer the database schema into XML then use that "Platform Independent Model" to generate a JDO model and set of persistence-capable Java classes, and now a Faces Bean model and Bean classes. We also have a set of constants files which have all the entity and property names to be used in the web layer.
    Since the database model is huge, and changes alot (government project), hard-coding EL expressions in a thousand places is a very bad idea given the code-generation/reverse-engineering approach.
    We want 100% compile-time checking for all persistent-access properties and the Faces programatic approach to Value/Method bindings gets us there, if it will somehow work.
    --any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • JSF tag/tag attribute reference?

    Is there a place where I can references for the various JSF tags and their attributes, fx. the validators and which attributes they support and so on?

    The right place to check is the html_basic.tld and jsf_core.tld. These are part of the jsf-ri.jar.

  • Mixing HTML and JSF or better pure JSF Tags?

    I'm relatively new to JSF, but i can say, i work with all the Web Standards in HTML and CSS.
    So the HTML Render Results of JSF may not fit into a Web Developers Dreams of perfect HTML/CSS.
    An Option i see is to use HTML and put only the dynamic parts in there as JSF Components.
    What are the Pro's and Con's using HTML?
    some stuff i can image:
    Using pure JSF:
    - May many components have impact to the performance?
    - Mixed with HTML: What if the application should be rendered to another client pc (e.g. Mobile)?
    What are your experiences?

    The one downfall of mixing html with jsf, unless you use the f:verbatim tag, that the page is not properly represented in the component tree. Also depending on certain technologies you use (when I used ajax4jsf it worked this way) that the jsf component tree was rendered and then all the html was rendered at the end. This caused html tags and text that I had inside a jsf tag to be improperly displayed.
    This though was the case when I was originally using jsf 1.1, so it may have been improved in later editions, but since I have become accustomed to writing the entire page in jsf tags I have not really tested that limit in the current version.

  • ADF Faces: is mixing JSF RI and ADF Faces tags supported?

    Hi,
    I'm looking at ADF Faces as a future possibility for our application that is currently based on JSF RI.
    When looking at the ADF Faces demo it strikes me that all pages are almost completely built up from ADF Faces tags.
    For instance
    af:form
    af:commandButton
    af:inputText
    are used instead of the equivalent core jsf tags f:form, f:commandButton and f:inputText
    I'm wondering if this is mandatory if we would like to use some ADF Faces components mixed within our existing application.
    In other words: are ADF Faces tags supported in the environment of conventional JSF tags? And mixing ADF Faces JSF components with JSF components by other vendors?
    Another thing that strikes me is that pages are constructed using ADF Faces tags for any and all markup content.
    I guess this is meant to support several different clients (normal browser applications, mobile clients, voice activation over telephone) using different renderers.
    In my experience abstracting markup this way inherently means loss of control over the exact markup that is sent to the client. This is not acceptable for all projects and customers.
    Is embedding ADF Faces tags within template HTML, within f:verbatim tags or not, supported?
    Regards,
    Joost de Vries

    You absolutely can mix JSF RI and ADF Faces tags. This is very much supported! You can swap in <h:form> and <h:commandButton> and <h:inputText>. Our versions support some features that the JSF tags do not, as described in our release notes.
    Your point about using tags to produce all markup is a very cogent one. For some projects, absolute control over HTML will be a necessary requirement, so we do support that style of development. But we believe strongly that the future does not lie in constant handcoding of HTML, but instead in building more powerful, flexible, and reusable components and assembling those into pages. This was one of the themes of a talk I gave with two coworkers at this past JavaOne.

  • Jsf equivelent of struts html:base tag

    I'm having an issue with the myfaces panelNavigation component. I'm including it in a series of pages with subview & jsp:include tags. It's working great with one exception. If I browse to a document one directory deeper than the "home" page, and then click the "home" link taking me back to the parent directory, the external css sheet doesn't load. All of my links and text are there, but not styled at all. If I click the link again, every thing loads fine.
    I remember the <html:base> tag from struts and I tried using it on the home page. However, the page refused to load and the server did not throw a stack trace (even though the logging is set to FINE).
    I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar issue and if there is an equivelent tag in JSF to solve this problem.
    Thanks!

    thanks for you answer.
    but when i use the <html:base/> tag, everybody can see my internal structure when viewing the source code of the generated html in browser.
    i think i haven't understood the base tag (and have never used it).
    could somebody tell me how to use this tag correctly ? (html or struts version)
    actually my problem is, i used to define a variable at the top of every jsp page like this :
    <%! String conPath ; %>
    <% conPath = request.getContextPath();%>
    then,
    <a href="<%= conPath%>/some/link">Some Text</a> or <img src="<%=conPath%>/image/bottom.jpg">, is there a better way without using java code in jsp ? because when the context root changes some day, i have to change all jsp pages.
    can the <base> tag be helpful here ? how ?
    yawmark,
    when i put all my jsp files under WEB-INF, do i have to change something in struts-config.xml ?
    thanks in advance

  • JSF and semantic HTML.

    I am web designer developing with web standards and semantic html. I've worked with struts before, with it I had easy control over the tag soup sent to the client, it was easy to markup using semantic html/xhtml. With jsf I have less much control over the markup. Is there anyone developing semantic html markup using jsf? Any good solutions to achieve it?

    Take a look at facelets:

  • How to add raw HTML tags inside JSF tags...

    Hi
    I would like to use <input type = text > inside my project in some area..The following code hides the input = type html tag and forwards the click event to jsf command button...After selecting the file,it should forward the value to jsf textfield....
    My code seems as below.
    <h:form id="detailForm" onsubmit="printElements(detailForm,this)">
    <f:verbatim>
    <input id="uploadFile" type="file" style ="dispaly:none"size="100" />
    </f:verbatim>
    <h:inputText id="docName" style="width:650px;" maxlength="100"/>
    <h:commandButton id="visibleBrowseButton" value="Select File..." onclick="'detailForm:uploadFile'.click();callClick();">
    </h:commandButton>
    </h:form>
    <script type="text/Javascript">
    function callClick()
    var val = document.detailForm.uploadFile.value;
    document.getElementById('detailForm:docName').value = val;
    </script>
    While running this page it works fine in IE but in Mozilla firefox it troubles me during detailForm:uploadFile'.click().
    I suspect the jsf page cannot able to detect the raw html tag inside jsf tags...Eventhough i tried using inside<f:verbatim> it wont works..
    I would like to know
    1.Whether the code is right,,if the code goes wrong why it got runned in IE not in firefox....
    2.How can raw html tags can be integrated inside JSF tags....

    First of all, why are you ignoring valuable answers about a JSF fileupload component in your previous topic?
    Second, you can just nest raw HTML anywhere in your JSF page. Your problem is rather related to JavaScript. It has completely nothing to do with Java nor JSF. Learn JavaScript -there is a nice tut at w3schools.com- and look for a JavaScript forum if you still stucks. There are ones at webdeveloper.com and dynamicdrive.com.
    The f:verbatim is only required if you was using JSF 1.1 or older, which is not the case. You would have occurred completely different problems.

  • BC won't allow me to insert code (scripts) between the /body and the /html tags.

    Hi guys,
    So I have this weird problem. I'm trying to insert some codes between the </body> and the </html> tags in the page templates. It's saving it. But if you check the page, the code is showing before the </body>, not after. Here's the code that I'm trying to insert.
    <script src="http://i.simpli.fi/dpx.js?cid=1534&action=100&segment=198566&m=1"></script>
    I have also tried adding this code by downloading the templates through ftp, adding the code, then uploading it to the server. Same thing. I even added type="text/javascript" in the code. Still no go. BC wouldn't insert it between </body> and </html>. Any ideas guys?
    - Jeff

    So an update.
    I was told by Adobe chat support to try adding the script after the body via javascript.
    So I added this before </head>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var script = document.createElement('script');
    script.src = '//i.simpli.fi/dpx.js?cid=1534&action=100&segment=198566&m=1';
    script.type = 'text/javascript';
    $("html").append(script);
    </script>
    Still not working. Any ideas guys?
