JSF vs  Struts  And  Best O/R mapping  tech.

I want to start working again after 3+ years gap from 2003 to 2007.Earlier for 4 years I have worked on web/enterprise applications and technical platform was JSP1.2,SERVLET 2.x,Oracle's xsql servlet,JDBC ,Struts1.0/1.1,statleless Session Bean ,Web Service generated by BEA WEBLogic server 8.1,jdk1.3.
I've been looking through too many documents and forums, there are so many choices now .Could you please suggest which of the following should I learn to update my skills :
1.JSF OR Struts 1.2,1.3 OR Struts2 ( There are no books for Struts 2)
2.Hibernate OR EJB3 OR Torque OR TopLink
3. jdk 1.4 OR java 5
Can you help me to findout documentation and tutorials to learn these .
Thanks

You're wanting to get back into writing web applications?
Web services?
1 - If you worked with struts before, I'd probably continue with that line. Or at least start there.
2 - I'd say Hibernate, but then I don't know that much about the others ;-)
3 - Java1.5.
I would also recommend you catch up with the changes between JSP1.2 and JSP2.0, particularly regarding JSTL and EL.
For learning JSTL, you can't past go the JSTL spec. It is quite readable, and an excellent reference. http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/jstl/reference/api/index.html

  • Struts and JSF Integration in OPDk-java based portlet

    Hi,
    thanks in advance for your help.
    I'm developing a PDK java based portlet. For some reasons I cannot use the JSF bridge but I would like to integrate Struts and Jsf in my portlet, using Struts to manage actions and navigation and JSF (with ADF Faces components) for the view. I'm using the Strus-Faces library.
    When I try to submit my portlet form, I receive the error "request URL not found on this server". I'm posting some exstracts of my code.
    It's made of three pages: the main one "Integration1ShowPage", "error" and "result". The MainAction.java displays my mainPage, where there's a form. To keep it easy, when the user submits this form, the ActionName returns "success" and the "result" page should be displayed.
    The MainAction works properly: the portlet is displayed but when I tried to submit the form I receive
    The requested URL /provaDeploy/htdocs/integration1/integration1ShowPage.do was not found on this server.Could you please suggest me something?
    Many many thanks,
    B.

    Hi,
    have a look at this whitepaper for how to use JavaScript in ADF.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jdev/1-2011-javascript-302460.pdf
    This link here (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/index-101235.html --> see sample 71) shows an integration sample between a Java Applet and ADF. Its a similar use case to yours

  • Can Struts and JSF coexist?

    I have a Struts based application and now I want to build an additional module on top of that using pure JSF. My question is, can Struts and JSF co-exist in the same application? If yes, what are the cons of that approach? What are the places I need to tweak in the configuration files so that they work together?
    thanks,

    Hi,
    Yes they can coexist. Actually that's the approach recommended by Craig McClanahan. I have developed a full enterprise application (80% completed) which uses JSF in front and Struts in the back using Struts-Faces integration library (developed by Apache).
    So far I haven't faced any major issues with this approach. However, I haven't try using Struts validator on JSF objects.
    Read the article below on how to integrate JSF w/ Struts.

  • Struts and JSF

    I have an Action from Struts. This controls the data in the code behind bean.
    After I call submit, how do I go Back to the Struts actions? the JSF navagation does not allow navigating to a servlet.

    Hey Shay,
    We have quite a large application based entirely on Struts. There is a keen interest in migrating to JSF, but in an incremental fashion. I did a fair amount of googling and almost everything i came up with , was purely theory oriented, are there any resources online , which clearly give examples/tutorials for doing a step by step migration to JSF from Struts. Couple of other questions that i dont seem to find an answer to with regards to the Integration of struts and JSF
    1) I understand BC4J, struts and JSF can be integrated together, does the same hold for ADF ? there was a similar forum post back in 2005 , where they said this is yet to be done, do we have this integration with Jdev 10.1.3 ?
    2) If i were to use only the jsf UI component tags as a first step in my struts application , what is the equivalent for the page definition file of JSF in struts, as in how would i achieve the binding ?

  • How does *.jsf extension map to *.jsp extension and where it is mapped

    Hi ,
    How does *.jsf extension map to *.jsp extension and where it is mapped ?
    Thanks

    How does *.jsf extension map to *.jsp extension and where it is mapped ?It is mapped in the web.xml.
    If you add the following in your web.xml:
    <context-param>
    <param-name>javax.faces.DEFAULT_SUFFIX</param-name>
    <param-value>.xhtml</param-value>
    </context-param>
    The *.jsf will be mapped to the file with the same name, but xhtml as extention.
    if you the javax.faces.DEFAULT_SUFFIX is not defined in the web.xml, the default suffix comes from the one of the constant of javax.faces.application.ViewHandler . This constant names DEFAULT_SUFFIX and equals to ".jsp"
    Look at:
    http://java.sun.com/j2ee/javaserverfaces/1.1/docs/api/constant-values.html

  • Using jsf with struts

    hi;
    i am trying to understand the proper architecture when using jsf and struts together.
    i think i understand the differences between the technologies . it seems to me that instead of justifying jsf there should be a focus on how the two technologies actually collaborate.
    specifically, i would like to know or see examples of things like replacing the view portion of struts and plugging in the jsf framework instead or how to i replace the struts actions with jsf commands or maybe they are totally different things.
    where can i get information like this?
    thanks.

    At present, i think the best thing to do is to look at the example provided with the struts-faces integration taglib. I don't know any documentation about it.

  • Struts and ADF in Portal

    Hello. We have had a TAR going for some time regarding an issue with Struts and ADF in Portal. This is the summary of the TAR:
    Customer followed the following document to create his Struts ADF application:
    Developing an End-to-End Web Application Using the Default Technology Scope
    at
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe9051jdev/ADFtoJSP/defaultendtoend.htm
    After following the steps in the documentation, his application worked just fine.
    - After this he decided to portletize his application using the following document:
    OracleAS Portal Developer Kit (PDK)
    How to create a Struts Portlet ?
    at
    http://portalstudio.oracle.com/pls/ops/docs/FOLDER/COMMUNITY/PDK/ARTICLES/pdkstruts/portletize-your-app.html
    When adding his portlet to a page, he basically received a portlet without any data, while the same worked fine outsi
    de of Portal.
    These are examples from the JSP file that do not show up in the portlet:
    <c:out value="${bindings.DepartmentsView1.labels['DepartmentId']}">
    <c:out value="${bindings.DepartmentId.label}"/>
    </c:out>
    We figured out that if we add the following filter mapping then it works fine:
    <filter-mapping>
    <filter-name>ADFBindingFilter</filter-name>
    <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
    </filter-mapping>
    This filter mapping would mean that it maps all URLs to the ADFBindingFilter. I suppose this would not be necessary and we're concerned about the implications this might cause and we believe that there should be a better solution for this.
    The final reply from support was that Portal is not yet supported with ADF technology. Does anyone have any comment on the above filter issue and other thoughts on using Struts and ADF in Portal? Another issue we found was that the PDK Struts tags do not support EL expressions. Have a look at this forum post:
    Re: Struts and nested tags in parameters. Possible?

  • JSF or STRUTS to be used in Presentation layer?

    In a project that we are currently doing , we are in a dilemma as to use Struts or JSF as our Presentation tier..we have gone through a lot of documents of pro's and con's of each but are unable to come to a conclusion..If anyone could share his thoughts or experience for that case with us it would be of great help.

    I've never tested Struts and JSF for performance. In the many projects I've worked on, I've never found the presentation tier to be the performance bottleneck. When using JSF and Facelets together, your 'pages' are XHTML files which are WAY faster for development because you don't wait for a JSP to compile when testing pages.
    Struts, in my opinion, was a great framework but has some quirks which I've never really liked much. I don't like having to extend classes for actions and form beans. I don't like needing a form bean which is similar but different from my model objects (form beans really need to have properties that are strings (because bean properties are set before validation)). Somewhere you often need to copy a form bean into your 'real' model object before you write to the database. I also don't like necessarily having to separate out a form bean and 'action' methods. For example, I ilke to have a simple UserLogin object that has id, username and password properties along with an authenticate() method all together. Struts necessitates a whole log of classes for each page (and lots of configuration if you use tiles templating). Read what the author of Struts has to say about the two technologies:
    http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/craigmcc/20040927
    Perhaps your best resource will be the website www.JSFCentral.com It has links to a variety of articles about and tuturials for JSF. Also search the IBM DeveloperWorks website for JSF and you'll find many good articles from IBM people, one of the best is a 4 part series that starts with:
    http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jsf1/
    You can find more information about Facelets at:
    https://facelets.dev.java.net
    I'm not sure about WSAD support for JSF. Exadel (www.exadel.com) has an extension for Eclipse that supports Facelets and XHTML file editing and it's available for free.
    Also, the book Core JavaServer Faces by David Geary is a really excellent resource.
    Cheers, Don

  • How do I search and work in the map module without losing my selection

    I'm going through my old photographs that predate geotracking and adding my best guess as to their locations via the  map module but I'm getting frustrated.
    My biggest angst is the selections.  In the library module, I look around and find a set of photographs that were taken at the same place and I select them.  I then go to the map module and move found, sometimes search, for the place where the photographs were taken.  Now, I go back to drop the selection into the map and ... OH NO!!! .. there is no selection.  Double angst is I click back in Library and I'm scrolled all the way to the start of my group of photographs.
    Deselecting the photos is the biggest UI mistake that Lightroom is making in this sequence.  I'm wondering if there is something that I can do to either prevent it or perhaps have a second method of a quick temporary group of photographs.
    The other related question I have is if anyone has a suggestion of how to mark these photos as the type of GPS information.  e.g. it could come from the camera, it could come via a track log, or it could be just my best guess.  Perhaps that is already possible to determine.

    When you find the photos you want that were taken in a single location, select them and put them in a Quick Collection (press B)
    Then select the Quick Collection and go to the Map Module with the filmstrip turned on. You will then be able to work ONLY with this set of photos that are taken in one location

  • Opinion needed on best way to map multiple table joins (of the same table)

    Hi all
    I have a query of the format:
    select A.col1, B.col1,C.col1
    FROM
    MASTER_TABLE A, ATTRIBUTE_TABLE B, ATTRIBUTE_TABLE C
    WHERE
    A.key1 = B.key1 (+)
    AND
    A.key1 = C.key1(+)
    AND
    B.key2(+) = 100001
    AND
    C.key2(+) = 100002
    As you can see, I am joining the master table to the attribute table MANY times over, (over 30 attributes in my actual query) and I am struggling to find the best way to map this efficiently as the comparison for script vs. mapping is 1:10 in execution time.
    I would appreciate the opinion of experienced OWB users as to how they would tackle this in a mapping and to see if they use the same approach as I have done.
    Many thanks
    Adi

    If I run this it takes less than a second in TOAD, when mapped in OWB it takes ages. 10:1 is a conservative estimate. In reality it takes 15-20 minutes. CSI_IEA_VALUES has 30 million rows CSI_ITEM_INSTANCES has 500,000 rows.
    Hope that helps. I would love to know how others would tackle this query.

  • What are the best approaches for mapping re-start in OWB?

    What are the best approaches for mapping re-start in OWB?
    We are using OWB repository 10.2.0.1.0 and OWB client 10.2.0.1.31. The Oracle version is 10 G (10.2.0.3.0). OWB is installed on Linux.
    We have number of mappings. We built process flows for mappings as well.
    I like to know, what are the best approches to incorportate re-start options in our process. ie a failure of mapping in process flow.
    How do we re-cycle failed rows?
    Are there any builtin features/best approaches in OWB to implement the above?
    Does runtime audit tables help us to build re-start process?
    If not, do we need to maintain our own tables (custom) to maintain such data?
    How did our forum members handled above situations?
    Any idea ?
    Thanks in advance.
    RI

    Hi RI,
    How many mappings (range) do you have in a process flows?Several hundreds (100-300 mappings).
    If we have three mappings (eg m1, m2, m3) in process flow. What will happen if m2 fails?Suppose mappings connected sequentially (m1 -> m2 -> m3). When m2 fails then processflow is suspended (transition to m3 will not be performed). You should obviate cause of error (modify mapping and redeploy, correct data, etc) and then repeat m2 mapping execution from Workflow monitor - open diagram with processflow, select mapping m2 and click button Expedite, choose option Repeat.
    In re-start, will it run m1 again and m2 son on, or will it re-start at row1 of m2?You can specify restart point. "at row1 of m2" - I don't understand what you mean (all mappings run in Set based mode, so in case of error all table updates will rollback,
    but there are several exception - for example multiple target tables in mapping without corelated commit, or error in post-mapping - you must carefully analyze results of error).
    What will happen if m3 fails?Process is suspended and you can restart execution from m3.
    By having without failover and with max.number of errors=0, you achieve re-cycle failed rows to zero (0).This settings guarantee existence only two return result of mapping - SUCCSES or ERROR.
    What is the impact, if we have large volume of data?In my opinion for large volume Set based mode is the prefered processing mode of data processing.
    With this mode you have full range enterprise features of Oracle database - parallel query, parallel DML, nologging, etc.

  • ABAP program and FB for value mapping replication

    Hi,
    we are using a 40B system and I want to use the value mapping replication in XI. To refill the data into the XI database I must write an ABAP and a function module to transfer the data out of R/3 into XI (via RFC). Has anybody an example how the program (and the FB) must look like? i.e I want to read table mvke and extract the materialnumber and the prodhierarchy.
    Thanks and best regards
    Arnold

    Hi Arnold,
    First you need a table type with a structure like follows:
    operation
    groupid
    context
    identifier
    agency
    scheme
    (corresponding to the Interface ValueMappingReplication)
    All used data elements should have type string or charXX
    for example: operation - char10, groupid - char32, rest - char120
    Next you create a function module with attribute 'remote-enabled module'.
    The import parameter is your new table structure.
    Next you create an ABAP program. Here an example:
    report z_value_mapping .
    tables mvke.
    data:
    p_value_mapping type zvalue_mapping,
    p_value_mapping_table type zvalue_mapping_table.
    p_value_mapping-operation = 'Insert'.
    p_value_mapping-context = 'http://xi.com/Material'.
    select * from mvke where matnr between '170' and '501'.
    check not mvke-prodh is initial.
    * Create a value mapping group to join two entries.
    * use a unique 32 digit number.
    concatenate '00000000000000' mvke-prodh into p_value_mapping-groupid.
    translate p_value_mapping-groupid using ' 0'.
    * Store the mapping source as first entry to the group
    p_value_mapping-identifier = mvke-matnr.
    p_value_mapping-agency = 'SenderAgency'.
    p_value_mapping-scheme = 'MATNR'.
    append p_value_mapping to p_value_mapping_table.
    * Store the mapping target as second entry to the group
    p_value_mapping-identifier = mvke-prodh.
    p_value_mapping-agency = 'ReceiverAgency'.
    p_value_mapping-scheme = 'PRODH'.
    append p_value_mapping to p_value_mapping_table.
    endselect.
    * Push data to XI
    call function 'Z_VALUE_MAPPING' in background task
      destination 'IS_XID'
      exporting
        value_mapping       = p_value_mapping_table.
        commit work.
    Import the RFC to the Integration Builder, create a mapping between your RFC and the interface ValueMappingReplication.
    Check this Blog for additional steps:
    /people/sreekanth.babu2/blog/2005/02/23/value-mapping-replication
    Choose names for context, agency and scheme which are useful your scenario.

  • PO7.31 and BPM: Using Operation Mapping within BPM

    Hello everyone!
    I am facing an issue while trying the import/execute an Operation Mapping within a BPM. Have a PO 7.31SP07 installation (NWDS also on 7.31 SP07), and the process already have some working interface calls to PI, however still having issue while trying to execute the Operation Mapping:
    1. After deploying the process, going to NWA -> SOA tab -> Application and Scenario Communication -> Application Communication -> select the process -> check the "localhost"/WS group for "Local System". The  "Processing State" shows the error below:
    Configuration for service group [localhost] failed. Error details:
    [No endpoints found. Check if the service is configured and if its
    endpoints are available in the . Service:

    Assigned Provider: [Local System]
    Service Group: [localhost]
    Service Group application: [fusionconsultoria/salesord]
    Service Reference application: [fusionconsultoria/salesord]
    2. During runtime, when trying to execute the OM automated step, on log viewer:
    Error during SCA Processing

    Please check the configuration details from the NWA. You may have not
    assigned the Service Group to a Provider System, or the generation of
    the configuration has failed.
    3. Carried out the steps from the referenced links below. They are quite similar to each other, however still facing the issue:
    Reuse PI Operation Mapping as a service in SAP NetWeaver BPM
    Using Operation Mappings (PI) in a BPM Process - Process Orchestration - SAP Library
    Using NetWeaver PI’s Mapping in NetWeaver BPM
    - Marked as "local provider" and WS;
    4. Tried deleting, creating the automated step aswell reimporting the Operation Mapping.
    5. Already reviewed the input/output mapping of the automated activity;
    6. On ESR, the mapping works correctly.
    7. Tried changing the outbound and inbound Service interfaces for the OM from stateless to stateless XI3.0, as well from synchronous to asynchronous.
    At this moment I've completely ran out of ideas. Appreciate if anyone could give any insights, since I am running out of time with this project!
    Thanks in advance to all and
    Best regards,
    Lucas Santos

    Hi Lucus
    I'm facing the same type of problem.
    Why would re-creating the BPM fix this issue ?.    I fear I would spend all this effort for nothing.
    What does your operation mapping wsdl:service > soap:address look like ?   What does your NWA BPM application Communication Configuration look like now - before you had that red light - like I have now.
    The WSDL that is generated from the imported Operation Mapping : what end point is expected here. My wsdl:service > soap:address location has a port of 50500 - which does not even exist!. How can it work  Does this get automatically deployed onto the Service Registry?.
    I have built and deployed this but I get a run time error when it executes the operation mapping.   A technical error during invocation: Could not invoke service reference name.
    I have seen in the deployed BPM's Application Configuration against the Consumed Service Groups an error against the associated service group
    Configuration for service
    group [SG_localhost] failed. Error details: [No endpoints found. Check if the  service is configured and if its endpoints are available in the . Service
    It almost seems that it wants me to publish the end point on the service registry -  no idea how....but I none of the blogs and post indicate that I need to fiddle with this at all.
    I have this question in SDN too if you care to take a look.

              <managed-bean-name>user</managed-bean-name>
              <managed-bean-class>com.myjsf.UserBean</managed-bean-class>
              <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope>
         </managed-bean>
         <navigation-rule>
              <from-view-id>/index.jsp</from-view-id>
              <navigation-case>
                   <from-outcome>welcome</from-outcome>
                   <to-view-id>/welcome.jsp</to-view-id>
              </navigation-case>
         </navigation-rule>
    </faces-config>Now when I start my application , the index page redirects me to login.faces. I believe the FacesServlet intercepts this call, strips of .faces and forwards to login.jsp. Login.jsp is displayed correctly, so far so good. However from here on, I have all kinds of problems
    1. Should the <from-view-id> be /index.jsp (my actual url) or /login.jsp (the url to which index.jsp forwards me to). Actually both seem to work (or not work depending on how you look at it :( )
    2. Anyways whatever I set it to, the login.jsp is displayed correctly. The action attribute of the commandButton tag is set to 'welcome' which matches with the <from-outcome> value in navigation rule in faces-config.xml and I would have expected the welcome.jsp to load on form submit.
    But the form just reloads itself on clicking submit.
    I googled around and discovered that this may be due to validation errors or conversion errors and adding <h:messages/> would indicate the error source. AQccordingly I added it and got this o/p
    " "name": " Conversion Error setting value 'Duke' for 'null Converter'. To cut a long agony story short, I found that I have to define a converter for some data types for validation and/or display. But all I have is a String property. Doesnt jsf provide a default Converter ?
    3. I couldnt get my app to work when I put my jsps in a folder and access them as /<foldername>/jsp in my faces-config.xml. Isnt this possible ? Should all jsps be under the root folder ?
    Will be thankful for any help.
    cheers,
    ram.
    2. Whenever I click on

    Thanks for the reference , I shall definitely go through it.
    My immediate concern is to get the first program working.
    Here is my source code for the bean.
    package com.myjsf;
    import java.io.Serializable;
    public class UserBean implements Serializable {
        private String userName;
        public String getUserName() {
            return userName;
        public void setName(String userName) {
            this.userName = userName;
    }Here's my login.jsp which comes up fine
    <f:view>
       <h:form>
         <h:messages/>
             <h3>Please enter your name.</h3>
                 Name: <h:inputText id = "userName" value="#{user.userName}"/><br>
                  <h:commandButton value="Login" action="welcome"/>
         </h:form>
      </f:view>Here's my faces-config.xml
    <faces-config>
         <managed-bean>
              <managed-bean-name>user</managed-bean-name>
              <managed-bean-class>com.myjsf.UserBean</managed-bean-class>
              <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope>
         </managed-bean>
         <navigation-rule>
              <from-view-id>/login.jsp</from-view-id>
              <navigation-case>
                   <from-outcome>welcome</from-outcome>
                   <to-view-id>/welcome.jsp</to-view-id>
              </navigation-case>
         </navigation-rule>
    </faces-config>     And this is the error that I get
    "userName": Conversion error occurred. The page gets displayed again. One thing I noticed was that in the html - view source the action attribute of the form tag is set to /myjsf/faces/login.jsp. Shouldnt it be welcome.jsp rather ?
    Iam at my wits end. I have decided to write a Converter which may solve my problem, but is it required ?
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Ram.
