JSP Beans or JSP Taglibs?

Hello, I am not sure if my question is correct, but please pour some light if you can, I want to know if i have a Bean which is used for accessing a Database and performing operations with it and at the same time if i have a taglib which also does the same functionality, which is better to use? Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Regards,
Navin Pathuru

Umm... well, a bean is just a java class that follows
certain conventions, like it has get/set methods, etc.
To be a tag, you have to implement or extend specific
interfaces and refer to the class in a TLD file.
Maybe we're just not understanding each other.
Perhaps you just mean that jsp:useBean is a tag?Sorry for the confusion. You are right that I was talking about the jsp:useBean. :P-))))

  • Redirect from jsp bean to jsp or html page

    I am facing a problem in redirecting to a jsp page from jsp bean
    How do i redirect from jsp bean to any other page like jsp or html.
    [email protected]

    Hi
    The solution you suggested we tried it long before only but it is not feasible for us as we have to implement it in all web pages which are in thousands.
    My need is like this.
    We have given specific time to each of our registered user , as user logs to our portal we calculate session time in bean and as he logs out is new time gets updated. (its like dial up connection)
    Now what happens consider user has left only 10 minutes balance, I can calculate and keep track for his time in bean.Now as the time becomes zero I want to redirect him to home page.
    As u said i can get return value zero for bean and can do it ,but our webpages are near about thousands.

  • What is the difference between java direct or java bean in JSP?

    What is the difference if I use java code directly in JSP or use java bean in JSP?
    Which class to use for receiving the passed parameter from html or java script? Any difference for java code and java bean in the way receiving the passed data?
    How can I pass string from jsp to html or java script?

    it's generally accepted as better design to separate presentation from logic. meaning, the java code in the jsp should be used to support displaying data, as oppsoed to implementing the application - like database access, etc.
    when the logic is separated from the presentation, it allows you to reuse logic components within several jsp pages.
    if you decide to change the presentation layer in the future (to support wap, for example) you don't need to rewrite your entire application, since the "guts" of the application is outside of the jsps.
    it is also a good idea to separate your business logic from your data layer. adding a "buffer zone" between these layers helps in the same manner as in separating presentation from logic. if you're using flat files for storage now, upgrading to a database wouldn't require rewriting all your business logic, just the methods which write out the data to a file, for example.
    once you feel comfortable with separating the various layers, check out the struts framework at http://jakarta.apache.org/
    to answer your second question, to get parameters passed in from HTML forms, use ServletRequet's getParameter() method.
    in tomcat:
    <% String lastName = request.getParameter( "lastname" ); %>
    to answer your third question: when displaying the HTML from withing a jsp, print out the string to a javascript variable or a hidden form element:
    <% String firstName = "mike"; %>
    <input type="hidden" name="firstname" value="<%= firstName %>">
    <script language="javascript1.2">
    var firstName = "<%= firstName %>";
    </script>
    this jsp results in the following html:
    <input type="hidden" name="firstname" value="mike">
    <script language="javascript1.2">
    var firstName = "mike";
    </script>

              You realy can do it like Xiang says, but the better way is to use packages. That's
              the way BEA is designed for. If you use packages you can but your bean classes
              in every subfolder beneath Classes. Here for example we have the subfolders test
              and beans:
              You have to declare the package on top of your Bean Source Code:
              package test.beans;
              In your JSP you don't need the import code of Xiang. You only have to refer the
              path of your bean class:
              <jsp:useBean id="testBean" scope="session" class="test.beans.TestBean" />
              There are some other AppServers that only can deploy Java Beans in packages. So
              if you use packages you are always on the right side.

    There are two ways of getting info from the bean.
    1) the jsp:getProperty tag, which seems correct in your code
    2) the <%= ... tag. In that case you must write a valid java expression. In your case: list.getValue1()

  • Beans through jsp

    hi,
    i' m trainee developer and working in struts. i'm totally novice in this regard. my pl asked me to develop an application on struts. i'm getting problem while using bean through jsp. i'm writing code:
    <jsp:useBean id="myBean" class="MyBean" type="MyBean" scope = "session"/>
    the error is:
    cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : class MyBean
    location: class org.apache.jsp.confirm_jsp
    MyBean myBean = null;
    ^
    total 3 errors associated with it. MyBean class is located in WEB-INF/classes
    can any one help me out?

    put your bean in a package and put that package under the WEB-INF/classes directory. Then use the fully qualified class name for the jsp:useBean:
    //in the bean
    package net.thelukes.myprog.beans;
    //the jsp:useBean
    <jsp:useBean id="myBean" class="net.thelukes.myprog.beans.MyBean" scope="session"/>

  • Calling JSP bean function on button OnClick

    Hi-
    A NewBie question....
    I have a .jsp page and supporting .java bean.
    I registed the bean in .jsp page using <jsp:useBean ...>
    I want to fire a function defined in that bean on the click of a button which is defined in the .jsp page
    So I am doing something like this... seems like not the correct way to do since it fires this script all the time, not just when the button is clicked.
    <input name='click1' type='Submit' value='Click1' onClick='<% testBean.click1Clicked (); %>'/>
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Kishor-
    Thanks for the reply.
    I realize that might be the case, as u explained in your two points.
    so now I have created a hidden input field and use it's value as a way to communicate between javascript and jsp. and in bean's function I check the value of this hidden field, which will be set by the OnClick's javascript and then proceed accordingly.
    Is this the correct way to accomplish what I am trying to?
    Thanks again

  • Use bean in jsp, please help me out

    Hi all,
    As a beginner in jsp I want to use a bean into my jsp page. But this bean is sourcing from a old applet (i've converted the code applet into beans code), and should return a chart (grpahics).
    Here is the heart of my problem : how can i replace, call , or set up the paint method from the applet. And call it into my jsp page in order to retrieve a chart ?
    Basically all applet shall have a paint method with a Graphics argument , in jsp i can't do
    Mypackage.mybean.paint(Graphics g);
    Hope someone will be able to help me
    Thanks in advance
    Shamann

    I don't think that you can use the Graphics object in a JSP. A JSP is executed on the server side and only the output from that will be sent to the client. If you want to use Graphics objects etc, I think that you'll have to send it to an applet (possibly embedded in the page), but since I've never done this, I can't help you, I'm afraid.

  • How can i load A gui JTable bean through jsp:useBean tag in a jsp page

    Hi,
    i am chiranjit , i am in a jsp project . i am desparately looking a solution for below stated problem:
    i want to make a jsp page for master entry , that why i want to load a GUI Java bean in my jsp page.This GUI Bean contaning a JTable in which allow grid type data entry in the jsp page. But i am unable load that bean in the jsp page through jsp:useBean tag in my page.So if you have any solution then send in the forum as early as possible.
    Thank you
    chiranjit

    No can do. JSPs can only output plain HTML (and javascript...) They are not used like normal Java classes.
    If you need a complex GUI then you might use an Applet instead. If you want to use a JSP then you are stuck using normal HTML components, like <table> <form...> <input type="text"> etc...

  • Using JSP-Beans in Apache

    Hi all!
    I'm trying to deploy a jsp page in Tomcat 4.1.19. This page uses Java Beans to set and get various properties. I've put the class file of Java Bean in WEB-INF/classes directory and jsp page in Dir root. But whenever I run the jsp page it shows error page saying the bean name as unresolved symbol.
    Please tell me the steps that are involved in setting up a Java Bean for jsp in tomcat and also if any special lines are needed to be added to Deployment Descriptor.
    Thanx
    Varun

    sorry for tha :) maybe my english sucks to much...
    here's what sun says:
    "Note: In the section JSP Scripting Elements we mentioned that you must import any classes and packages used by a JSP page. This rule is slightly altered if the class is only referenced by useBean elements. In these cases,
    ---***you must only import the class if the class is in the unnamed package***---.
    For example, in What Is a JSP Page? (page 246), the page index.jsp imports the MyLocales class. However, in the Duke's Bookstore example, all classes are contained in packages and thus are not explicitly imported."
    as mentioned here:
