  • File Writing with JSP

    Hi all,
    I'm creating a simple app that gets form data and populates it to a file. I want to make sure that each instance (thread?) is able to write to the file and not throw an exception since the file may be currently open by another instance of the jsp. Now I did basic thread programming in C++ a long time ago, so I'm aware of thread waiting conceptually, but I'm not familiar with the java implementation. Can someone show me some basic syntax on how I would go in essentially putting a lock on the file writing portion of the code.
    Thanx much

    I disagree that you should override anything in Threa, especiially the sleep method.
    What you should do is handle the file writing in a producer/consumer fashion. Have a single class that extends Runnable be the consumer. It handles all the file writing issues. You will run this in its own thread.
    Your JSPs (or other threads) fill in a collection, or some other holder, which informs the consumer to write to the file.
    As a brief example, this is a mini logger type of program. I use a class (LogCenter) to log data put in it from other sources (client1 and client2). For the sake of using newer API, I make use of the java.util.concurrent.BlockingQueue (and java.util.concurrent.LinkedBlockingQueue) to make a thread-safe collection and reporting system for text to come in and out of the logger.
    Note, this is far from production. Just something I whipped up when playing with blocking queues a while ago...
    package net.thelukes.steven.thread.test;
    import java.io.PrintWriter;
    import java.util.concurrent.BlockingQueue;
    import java.util.concurrent.LinkedBlockingQueue;
    public class LoggingCenter implements Runnable {
      private PrintWriter output;
      private BlockingQueue<String> toPrint;
      public LoggingCenter() {
        toPrint = new LinkedBlockingQueue<String>(10);
      public void setOutput(PrintWriter pw) {
        if (pw == null)  {
          if (output != null)
            return; //do not replace output with null
          else //pw is null and output is null
            throw new IllegalArgumentException("Ouput PrintWriter must not be NULL");
        else {
          if (output != null) closeOutput(); //if output exists already, close it.
          output = pw;
      public void log(String text) {
        boolean added = false;
        while (!added)
          try {
            toPrint.put(text);
            added=true;
          } catch (InterruptedException ie) {
            ie.printStackTrace();
            try { Thread.sleep(300L); }
            catch (InterruptedException ie2) { ie2.printStackTrace();}
      public void run() {
        try {
          while (true) {
            printLn(toPrint.take());
        } catch (InterruptedException ie) {ie.printStackTrace();}
      private void closeOutput() {
        output.flush();
        output.close();
      private void printLn(String text) {
        if (output == null)

            ("The Output PrintWriter must be set before any output can occur.");
        output.println(text);

  • Invoking a method from a java class to a jsp file

    Maybe i'm going through a very basic error, but as i've looked for in some forums and nothing found decided to post. So let's go to the problem.
    Well, i have a form in a jsp file, it's basicaly html, but as i need some select boxes populated with data from the database i decided to create some methods in java classes. This is the point.
    My method receive some attributes, like the table and colums names, the name of the select box and the HttpServletResponse object.
    So after making all the database process. The method is supposed to write the result through the out.println(); object
    It goes everything all right except that the method seems to be called first than the html code coz' my select boxes comes above the head in the begin of the page and was supposed to come in the middle.
    part of the code:
    package pacote;
    import java.packages.*
    public class Class{
    public void metodo(HttpServletResponse response, String tableName, String column name, String selectName){
    PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
    openConnection();
    //After making the query stuff
    //caso no haja nada na consulta
         if(rst == null)
         out.println("No h registros.");
         else{
         out.println( "<select name='" +SelectName + "' id='" +SelectName + "' class=\"input_ob\" >");
         out.println( "<option value=''>Escolha: "+objeto+"</option>");
         //fill the select body with options; A while that sweap the resultSet and use the out object to write the results
         getSelectBody(out,rst, selectValue);
    }This method is called this way:
    <tr valign="baseline">
        <td nowrap align="right">Grupo</td>
        <jsp:useBean id="m" scope="page" class="pacote.Class" />
            <td>
              <%
              try{
                   m.metodo(response, "tabela","grupo","id_grupo);
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                   e.printStackTrace();
                        %></td>I'd like to know what i'm missing here. why the answer doesn't go in the place It's supposed to go.
    any answer will be greatly apreciated

    The issue is caused because you are using the response to get the writer directly.
    The JSP has gotten the same writer, but has wrapped it in a JSPWriter class. That class has got a buffer.
    So it writes the beginning html to the JSPWriter buffer.
    You write your stuff to the response writer - gets sent to the output.
    It writes more stuff to the JSPWriter buffer, then flushes that buffer - at which point all the text written into the JSP writer now gets added to the response.
    You see how your code is coming out first?
    Solution - instead of getting the writer from the response, pass the writer into your method (maybe instead of response if you don't use response for anything else)
    public void metodo(Writer jspWriter, String tableName, String column name, String selectName){
      PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(jspWriter);
      ...That means that you will be writing to the same writer, and the text should come out in sequence.
    Cheers,

  • How to store data in KM from a JSP file

    Hi
    In our portal we have a JSP file with a text view where the user can add notes/things to remember etc. I need somewhere to store that information. I don't want to store it directly on the portalserver or the backendsystem. Is there a way to store the information of each user in KM from the jsp page? Is there a service/api I can use ?
    Thanks
    /Jakob

    Hi
    I used following code to upload file in km using wd java:
    /*Get an object of current Portal user */ IWDClientUser wdClientUser =
    WDClientUser.getCurrentUser(); com.sap.security.api.IUser sapUser = wdClientUser.getSAPUser();
    /*create an ep5 user from the retrieved user
    IUser ep5User =WPUMFactory.getUserFactory().getEP5User(sapUser);
    ResourceContext context = new ResourceContext(ep5User);
    /*Give the path to KM in the variable path */
    RID rid = RID.getRID(path);
    IResourceFactory factory =
    ResourceFactory.getInstance();
    ICollection folder = (ICollection) factory.getResource(rid,context);
    Using the upload element we can upload the files to a location in the server drive
    /*temperory location for writing */
    String location = u201Cgive the location hereu201D;
    String fileName = location+fileelement.getFilename();
    file = new File(fileName);
    /Create an output stream for writing to the temperory location/
    FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(file);
    out.write(fileelement.getFiledata());
    out.close();
    /From the temporary location read the file using an input stream/
    FileInputStream fin = new FileInputStream(fileName);
    fin.read();
    /*Using this input stream we can write to the repository
    Content content = new Content(fileelement.getFiledata(),fileelement.get) */
    Content content = new Content(fin,"byte", -1);
    IResource newResource = folder.createResource(fileelement.getFilename(),null, content);

  • How to pass a command line argument to a jsp file...

    Hi guys,
    I'm writing a jsp file in which I have some java codes. I want to pass some command line arguments to that jsp file. In other words, I have some files located somewhere on my C drive and I want to pass the path to these files to my jsp file. How can it be done? I have never done before.
    Any suggestion will be very hepful...
    Thanks....

    I dont know if I truly understand your problem...
    For instance, when you place the url of your jsp you can add, at the end some parameters. For example:
    http://myserver/myapp/myjsp.jsp?MyParameter=C:\Temp\JavaTutorial.html
    In your JSP, you can place this code on a scriplet to get the value:
    String path = request.getParameter("MyParameter");
    Hope it helps.

  • Unable to change .jsp file at runtime using weblogic 8.1 server

    Hello all,
    I'm running weblogic 8.1 and the development environment is workshop.
    I have several .jsp files in the application.
    when the server is running and I try to change the .jsp file and access it throw the browser, I'm getting compilation errors and when I copy the original file again everything is OK.
    I'm gessing the problem occurs due to the date of the new .jsp file(if I compile the .jsp file it creates a new servlet with newer date then the file generate when compiling the application before running the server).
    Your advice will be welcome.

    Hi Robert,
    Take a look at the SAP Note "[1553921 - Is there a utility that would help in writing database logon code?"|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_bi/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes%7B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333533353333333933323331%7D.do]
    The utility provided in above SAp Note will generate the logon code for your existing report, update the logon information of the target database in the code.
    Also search for the sample application 'change database at runtime' in top right corner search box.
    Hope it helps,
    Thanks,
    Bhushan.

  • File writing serialization

    I have to build a web application using servlet and jsp. The user should edit some
    text file (maybe displaying the file fields in a HTML form).
    I need some suggestions about implementing the synchronization on file writing (since different
    users should try to save the same file simultaneously).
    Do some standard pattern exist about this feature ?
    I suppose to do that using a java bean whith application scope shared by the jsp pages. In this bean
    I will implement all write methods using synchronized.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mauro.

    well, if you have a single method which does the actual file writing, then you make that method synchronized and you'll have no problems. You can build up the data to write in some object at any time and pass that to that method.
    However, that's still going to present problems when users actually modify the file at the same time. Why does every user have to share 1 file?

  • File writing permissions??

    is there any file writing permissions in jsp?
    i can create folders with my code on my localhost Tomcat 5.5.
    but now i have a webhost which has Tomcat 5.0...with my same jsp code i can see the content of my folders but cannot create any new folders under wwwroot or somewhere else on my webhost...
    so i am thinking if it is related with permissions or something like that?please show me a way
    thanks
    Burak

    my host admin responded;
    Hi,
    We can enable write permission, but this will put you in high security risk in tomcat shared hosting, as any other user also from his jsp/servlet script can write anything into your directory or delete file.
    Now what you think?what i want to do is i have a photo album site...users can create their own folders and upload their photo albums...but this users' main folder must be somewhere in a protected area that users musnt directly link to this photos...like before wwwroot or after WEB-INF folder...where can it be?
    please help me in this subject..need really help..
    thanks

    I'm applying patch on EBS 11.5.9, now it's compiling jsp file for about 1hours.
    Below is the log file,What is the command you use to compile JSP file?
    It is normal for compiling JSP files to run for more than 1 hour, which depends on the hardware resources you have. So, I would suggest you wait and see if the job completes successfully.
    Thanks,

  • Executing a jsp file from a local mahine

    Hi,
    I am totally new to jsp and javascript. I was wondering if you could tell me whether it's possible to execute a jsp file residing on a webserver from a normal java application on a local machine?
    I want to write a script that will reside in the root directory of my webserver, which when executed will write the directory structure to a text file, the java application then reads the file. Would this be possible?
    How would i go about executing the file on the webserver? i.e. what command would i use?
    Many thanks
    Please see a previous thread for more background info: -
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=31&thread=230736

    Since no one replied I actually used my brain and found it is possible to 'execute' the jsp file by using a URL and an inputstreamreader: -
                   URL myUrl=new URL( webFile );
                   InputStreamReader in = new InputStreamReader(myUrl.openStream());
                   BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(in);
                   while ((inputLine = reader.readLine()) != null)
                   encryStr = encryStr + inputLine;
                   in.close();
                   return encryStr;
    This will return the info i wanted from the jsp file - which was a neater way then writing to a text file.

    According to the release notes, for the JRCHelperSample to compile, you must set the target runtime for the project.
    To do this, either create a project from scratch that uses the Tomcat 5.5 target runtime, or go to the properties menu and ensure that the target runtime is set to the application server you will be using.

  • Import statement in .java files and .jsp files

    Guys I have few mysteries about this import statement.
    Please correct me if I am wrong.
    1)Suppose if I have a folder c:\SourceFolder it has one.java and two.java files.If I compile one.java then one.class files is created in c:\ClassFolder .Now two.java uses one of the method of one.java,and without using import statement I am able to compile two.java, and two.class file is created in c:\ClassFolder.I assume that the path of one.class was taken from the CLASSPATH environment variable,hence I there was no need for import statement .........am i right ?
    BUT... in My.jsp,which is in C:\JspFolder, if I want to use one.class,then I have to specifically import the class I want to use.That is i have to say
    <%@page import="one"%>
    and since the classpath is C:\ClassFolder ,it finds one.class in the C:\ClassFolder.(Note that My.class is created in a folder different from c:\ClassFolder )
    But I am wondering why was there no need for me to import one.class in two.java.
    (Note I am using JDeveloper and Apache server)
    Please help.
    In this case the pSo I am wondering in JSP why it doesn't take the class I am looking for from the classpath .
    Help.

    You have to understand Java scoping rules. In the 1st scenario with the two Java files I am guessing neither one of them begins with a package statement. This means that they belong to the default package. When you compile the compiler uses the classpath to resolve method calls looking in the default package since there was no import statement specified in two.java. JSP is a little different. Now I just read this here in these forums a couple of days ago. Since the classfiles generated from the JSP files are not in the CLASSPATH they are loaded by a different classloader. This is why you have to import all references to all classes in the default package.

    Is that Jasper Exception telling us where the problem is in the jsp, though?
    If it is, then "rs" is null in the call rs.next()...which means conn.executeQuery() is returning null. Which means that whatever class conn is (news.conn?) has a problem maybe?That's possible. Though, it may just be the case that the 'conn' object itself is null! That line is the first place where it's being used and there are no checks that I can see...we'll have to wait for the OP to investigate and reply I guess.That's what I originally thought, then I noticed it was saying line 47, which is the rs.next() line. Assuming Jasper is correct in its choice of line, then it's the rs that's null. Which means the conn is doing strange things.
    Edit: Now that I think about it, going by the previous thread the OP posted, I'm wondering whether news.conn class is their attempt to move the JDBC stuff out of the JSP page, and it's grabbing the "real" connection (java.sql.Connection) and getting the result set and returning it...or getting something wrong and returning null.
