Jsp generating 0 bytes

I have a jsp that writes some static content for now. Sometimes when i
          access it generates a 0 byte response. In the access log
          i see a success status ie. 200 with 0 bytes. Do anyone know why its
          happening.

Can you provide a reproducible test case? Can you at least provide the actual error message you get on save?
Also, could you try copying the resulting text to the clipboard before trying to save and then providing the text that preceeded the failing save?

  • JSP generates VerifyError

    I have a JSP page that is generating a VerifyError and the only explanation it gives is: "Illegal target of jump or branch".
    From what I could gather, the problem is the size of the page, because if I remove some <jbo:> tags, it doesn't matter which, it works.
    Is there a limit on the size of a JSP? If not, is there a way to pinpoint the source of this VerifyError (the error page doesn't say which line generated the error)?
    Thanks,
    Giovanni Vajna de Pava

    This has been reported internally as bug 2386238. The cause of the VerifyError is that a large JSP results in the generation of page implementation class files that are too large, and the Java VM's class verifier ends up finding an internal inconsistency in the class file even though the class file structure is itself well-formed (as defined by JVM spec).
    The customer reporting bug 2386238 was able to work-around the issue by decomposing the one large JSP into a number of smaller JSPs and static HTML files. The following link has a discussion on how to do this:
    http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle9i/doc_library/release2/java.920/a96657/keydev.htm#1014150
    At the end of the "Workarounds for Large Static Content in JSP Pages" section, there is a discussion on how JVMs have a 64k limit on the size of an individual method, which seems to be what is causing the VerifyError in your case.

  • Jsp generated xml

    I have a couple of jsp pages that generate xml formated data as well as xsl file. On win2k Ie everything works fine. On Netscape information comes up unformatted. I opened view source and saved it as separated xml file. When I open this xml file, information displayed with correct formatting.
    Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    I use Tomcat 4.1 and java 1.4

    I solved it by setting response.setContentType( "text\xml" ); on my jsps.
    Hope this will help.
    PS The problem I still see in IE 5.2 ( MAC OS X ), Camillon browsers. However, I have the luxury of requesting internal clients to upgrade to latest versions.

  • Generating byte[] and FileDownload in one step

    Hi there,
    i'm developing an wdp application with a java-backend.
    Now there is an iview with a linktoaction, which creates some excel-documents from the database (The backend returns the byte[]). Then there is the FileDownload component to download this generated excelfile.
    Well, this works quite good but i don't like it....
    The Question:
    Is there a possibility of combining the two steps (generating file and starting the download)? So, the user clicks on the Generate File Button or Link and automatically gets a request for a filedownload?
    Greetings
    Sascha

    well, i thought so but there was this little hope that someone might know a trick
    Thanks for your help anyway

  • XSLT, using document() to fetch a local JSP generated XML file

    All,
    I have 1 XML document that keeps track of various subsite owners of a domain I manage. The xml file doesn't hold much, something along the lines of:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <sitedirectory>
         <page id="/marys_page" name="Mary's Page"">
              <content_contact ntid="smithm" />
              <technical_contact ntid="techguy" />
         </page>
    </sitedirectory>Now I also have a JSP page, that when given an NT id as a URL parameter, rifles through LDAP and spits out an xml document with all the relavent ISID fields for that person's id (first name, last name, phone number, e-mail address etc).
    I use the document() function in an XSL file to access that dynamic JSP page, fetch the contents of the resulting XML file. Using the document() function with just a regular file call like "getldap.jsp" only feeds my stylesheet the source of that JSP file, not the resulting XML file that I'm looking for when it's been processed.
    So... I have my document() function calling the full URL to that JSP file on my domain, an example <value-of /> call in my XSL file would be:
    <xsl:value-of select="document('http://my.domain.com/jsp_util/ldap_person.jsp?ntid=smithm')/person/firstname" />and I get what I want, that person's first name, drawn from LDAP into my XSL file. But it seems a little weird to me, having a server-side transformation, accessing a JSP file by making an http call to the same server the transformation resides in.
    Am I missing something? Is there a better way to do this or some directive I'm missing? I'd appreciate any help.

    That's a creative but perfectly reasonable way to use the document() function.
    There are other ways to solve the problem, such as including Java calls in your XSL and applying a customized URIResolver to your transformation, but my approach would be to use the simplest method that works acceptably. So if you don't have performance problems with your solution, I would leave it alone.

  • Deploying web applications - jsp generated servlet's may be written over the same file!

    Hi, I have made the following test:
    Created two simple web applications with one jsp page, and deployed it
    with different context names, in weblogic.properties I have:
    weblogic.httpd.webApp.weirdApp=\java\weblogic\myserver\weirdApp.war
    weblogic.httpd.webApp.weirdAppTwo=\java\weblogic\myserver\weirdAppTwo.war
    (Note: I have used two diferent war files, because I have a different
    implementation of the jsp page, I could have used the same warfile, and
    deployed it two times with the same different names I have used)
    These two applications have a jsp named myHomePage.jsp
    If I access the first application, like this:
    http://myServer:7001/weirdApp/myHomePage.jsp
    the servlet for myHomePage is created in
    /java/weblogic/myserver/WEB-INF/_tmp_war/jsp_servlet/_myhomepage.class
    If I access the second application, like this:
    http://myServer:7001/weirdAppTwo/myHomePage.jsp
    the servlet for myHomePage is created in
    /java/weblogic/myserver/WEB-INF/_tmp_war/jsp_servlet/_myhomepage.class
    It overrides the first one! Because the servlets are keeped in memory by
    a different class loader this seems to not affect the other servlet, but
    I am wondering what may happen with this strange beaver from weblogic!

    I have a separate java class that gets my data and returns a Result object. Do you mean java.sql.ResultSet?
    In my main servlet I do the following:
    request.setAttribute("supporttracker",
    supporttracker.findsupporttracker(monthYear));
    and then in my JSP I can iterate through the Result
    like the following with no problems:
    <c:forEach var="supporttracker" begin="0"
    items="${supporttracker.rows}" varStatus="counter">
    My problem is that I can only iterate through this
    once in the page whereas I have no problem doing
    multiple forEach loops through other types of
    lists/collections such as an ArrayList. Right, because a ResultSet is a database cursor and doesn't act the same way that an ArrayList does. It's more like an InputStream - once you read it, you close it. If you want to re-read it, you have to re-initialize it again.
    Iterators behave that way, too. Once you walk through them, you have to re-initialize them.
    I've looked
    on the web and in a couple of books, I first thought
    it may be scope or some attribute in forEach that I
    was missing but I'm stumped. It seems like it's
    because the pointer to the result set is at the end
    of the result set when trying the second iteration,
    but I thought by using the begin="0" would put the
    pointer at the first row again, on my second
    iteration I'm getting no rows/data outputed.
    Please help and thanks in advance!The better thing to do is for your method to return a List of objects, one per row, that represent what the ResultSet returns. Have that method iterate through the ResultSet, loading the rows into the List, and close it before you leave in a finally block. A database cursor is a scarce resource, so it's a good idea to close it as soon as you can.

  • JSP, XML, XSLT: applying XSL on JSP-generated XML doc

    Hello,
    I am currently trying to figure out how to do the following:
    let's consider (that's not entirely hypothetical :) ) a web application working with JSP (on apache/tomcat 3.1) and oracle BC4J Application modules.
    The JSPs call oracle webbeans to perform updates and retrieve data from an 8.1.6 database.
    Now I'm thinking of moving to a combination of JSP, XML and XSL, which (hopefully) would allow to customize the application depending on the user's browser, language etc...(that's the point isn't it?)
    It doesn't seem to be a problem to produce XML from a jsp, send it directly to the client browser, which in turn goes to look for the proper XSL file and does all the transformation stuff.
    However this only works with I.E 5 for the moment right? and most website need to support various kinds of browsers...
    The need is:
    * When a non XML-capable browser is detected, apply the proper XSL(s) on the server side before sending the result back, in html/wml/whatever...
    * For XML-capable browsers, produce raw XML, maybe apply some XSL(s), and eventually send the result to the browser which handles the rest of the XSL stuff itself.
    Therefore, I'd like to:
    - Have the jsp produce the raw xml data (maybe adding extra tags, to indicate the browser and/or the language that the jsp engine has detected).
    - Pass the output to a first XSLT engine which would take care of the language stuff
    - Feed the result into a second XSLT engine to handle browser specificities for instance...
    - Send the final output to the client browser.
    Now, there are 2 problems:
    * 1/ I have seen various engines capable of chaining XSL transforms, and it is easy to produce XML from a jsp, but I don't know how to feed a jsp's output into an XML engine. is that possible? how?
    * 2/ I'm a bit concerned about the cost of applying three (or more) process stages, does anyone have insight on the performance issues this could raise?
    bonus question ;) : is there a simpler approach?
    Thanks a lot in advance, Remi

  • JSP generates html but the browser displays the html source

    Hi,
    I have iWS 4.1.3 on my Win2K Pro OS, as well as iAS 6.0. The documentation
    says that JSP is enabled by default. I put a simple .jsp file in my document
    root, and when I enter the url for the .jsp file, the browser displays the
    html source as opposed to rendering the html tags.
    I use IE 5.5 and Netscape 6.0, 4.77.
    Has anyone encountered this? What do I need to do to get JSP to work
    correctly.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kalpana

    Hi,
    I too have the same setup & did not do anything additional to get it
    working, but it works fine for me. May be the request is not reaching the
    webserver or try to disable and then enable the .JSP option, it may work. I
    believe iWS newsgroup will be able to help you in this regard.
    Regards
    Raj

  • JSP generates error - thread.java:481 - Source code viewing is disabled

    I run IBM WebSphere 3.5.3 on a WinNT platform. When I try to run my JSP testpage (which is a normal HTML page with jsp extension) I get the error message:
    thread.java:481 - Source code viewing is disabled.
    What is this? What can I do to get it running?
    I have made the webapplication and application server and it seems to run fine.
    Thanks in advance.

    I thought I had done it correctly, but I must have missed out on something. I tried my jsp code in the "examples" folder and it worked there. I am now using the "examples" folder instead. Thanks for your reply :)

  • Can I use AWT elements in a JSP, and so could I generate events with them?

    This is because Im doing a simple JSP that showing a button, my JSP is:
    <html>
    <%@ page import="java.awt.*" %>
    <%! Button b = new Button("Hola!!!"); %>
    <% add(b); %>
    </html>
    But when I tried to see the button in the browser, my JSP generates the following:
    Compilation of '/RAID5/weblogic/myserver/classfiles/jsp_servlet/_gep/_alterno/_23_mayo/__mr4.java' failed:
    /RAID5/weblogic/myserver/classfiles/jsp_servlet/_gep/_alterno/_23_mayo/__mr4.java:79: cannot resolve symbol
    probably occurred due to an error in /gep/alterno/23_mayo/mr4.jsp line 7:
    <% add(b); %>
    Could somebody help me please?.....
    Can I use AWT elements in a JSP, and so could I generate events with them?
    Thanks!!!

    There are 2 ways to run a web page dynamically:
    1) Reload the page via use of javascript or some other scripting language.
    2) Use an applet to regularly check a URL for the data
    Remember, as Paul pointed out, JSP's only generate HTML output. AWT components need to run inside a JVM not a just the browser.
    I could recommend an applet but you may have problems with IE6 not supporting java. Otherwise there shouldn't be too much of a prob.
    If you prefer to use an AWT/Swing setup (for example an application) rather than a JSP setup, Webstart is good for delivering online applications which operate standalone or remotely.
    When you consider that the Java-Plugin and the Webstart puligin are about the same size it's just a matter of weighing up who your target clients are and whats easiest.
    Cheers,
    Anthony

    import javax.faces.event.ActionEvent;
    import com.brl.solutions.EJB3.*;
    * @author Administrator
    public class ManagerBean {
        protected int currentInvoiceId;
        protected Invoices currentInvoice;
        protected InvoicesFacade invoicesFacade;
        /** Creates a new instance of ManagerBean */
        public ManagerBean() {
        /* business methods */
        public void createNewInvoice(ActionEvent actionEvent)
            invoicesFacade.create(this.currentInvoice);
        public Invoices getCurrentInvoice()
            return this.currentInvoice;
        public void setCurrentInvoice(Invoices currentInvoice)
            this.currentInvoice=currentInvoice;
    }I read in one blog (actually - the only page which was returned by yahoo - so - this should be very rare error!!!) to try to use Sun server's verifier.bat - and - it reported 0 errors and 0 warning. Build was succesfull as well and also - deployment was without errors - but - above mentioned error appeared during the automatic compilation of jsp pages/servlet when newly deployed jsps are first accessed from remote browser.
    So - is it possible, please, to receive some advice - what to do further? I feel that my invoice.jsp page can be with errors, - however - the original welcomeJSF.jsp should be working without errors even the erronwous JFS jsp page is added to web application.
    Thans for any adice or hint in advance!!!

    OK - I have made 'clean and build main project' from NB menu and the deployed the resulting *.war and the error messages have disappeared... So - it seems to be bug...

  • Problem viewing images from FTP server from HTMLs generated from a JSP

    Hello,
    We are developing an web application. The htmls will be dynamically generated based on user request. These htmls will contain images using urls like this "<img src="ftp://xyz/test.jpg">". We are having some strange problem. When we view the jsp generated html then it can not retreive the images fromthe FTP server. But when I copy the texts of this html and make a static html with this text then the image is shown...:-((
    Ahmed

    I don't know for sure,
    but if you use a server like resin you need to place the port after the server (e.g. intranet:8080/index.html) so maybe you should type ftp://xyz:23/image.jpg.

    The code I am using is working fine in a class file but wont work in my jsp.
    <%@page import="java.util.*,java.lang.String"%>
    Date date = new Date();
    String dateString = String.format("%tb%td",date,date);
    System.out.println(dateString);Any ideas?

    I get excactly the same problem.
    If compile the the JSP in Netbeans it works fine, however when Tomcat attempts to compile it into a servlet at runtime, I get the same error as described.
    This is the line in JSP that fails:
    <code>Some more text <%= String.format("%s","Bizarre") %> </code>However this one works OK:
    <code>Some more text <%= "Bizarre".substring(3) %> </code>Its almost as if Tomcat is compiling under JDK 1.4.2 or something but I don't have any other JDK or JRE installed; only 1.5.
    I suspect it may be a Tomcat setting that's causing a 1.4 code compliance.
    In Netbeans, if I go to the project properties -> Sources, at the bottom is the "Source Level" drop down list. If I change this to 1.4 and clean and build the whole project I get the same error when the jsp (or any class with this construct) is compiled by NetBeans.
    Note: I am using the Netbeans 5.0 and Tomcat and 5.5.9 co-bundle which I downloded from the Sun website.
    Can anyone help?
