Jsp question.. using random..

hi guys ,
have a quick question regarding jsp and database interection...wonering if this can be done?
i have a databse where many questions are stored in a databse...
and there are 10 questions.
1...if the user wanted only 8 random questions to come up, how would one go about this...
math random would prob be used but im not that familiar with the method or know it works...
2....what if i needed to store the number of random questions..
3.. the page should then only display the specified random question...
any help would be appreciate.. code samples welcome!
Thanks!

um i dont think i have explained my self clearly..
before the test is taken.. the teacher specifies that the system should choose a ramdom number of question to be repsented to the user for example... 15 questiosn stored ... ask random 10.
later on the day the student takes the test and 10 questions are displayed...
the questions are stored in a databse.. and might have to store the random number of questions.. i cant do the way suggessted as all questions appear on one page..
the question im asking is .. how would you get the random 10 questions out of 15 from the database?

  • Cannot find info on using random play and regular play symbols

    cannot find info on using random play and regular play symbols

    Guess I need to clarify my question.
    I am using iTunes for Mac.  At the top of the window, below the title of the song are two symbols which I am assuming are (on the left) for sequential play and (on the right) for shuffle.  Below, next to the name of my playlist is also a symbol for shuffle.  I cannot figure out how these relate and how to change the selection.  At the moment the shuffle symbol in the song title window is blue and the "sequential" symbol at the other end of the play bar is gray.  It is shuffliing thru the play list.
    Why is there no explanation available for the use of the icons and features on the screen?

    As the [HTML specification|http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/interact/forms.html] states, you should be setting the enctype to multipart/form-data to be able to upload files to the server. In the server side, you need to process the multipart/form-data binary stream by parsing the HttpServletRequest#getInputStream(). It is a lot of work to get it to work flawlessly. There are 3rd party API's around which can do that for you, such as [Apache Commons FileUpload|http://commons.apache.org/fileupload] (carefully read the User Guide how to use it).
    You can also consider to use a Filter which makes use of the FileUpload API to preprocess the request so that you can continue writing the servlet code as usual. Here is an example: [http://balusc.blogspot.com/2007/11/multipartfilter.html].

  • I need help with this program ( Calculating Pi using random numbers)

    hi
    please understand that I am not trying to ask anymore to do this hw for me. I am new to java and working on the assignment. below is the specification of this program:
    Calculate PI using Random Numbers
    In geometry the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is known as . The value of can be estimated from an infinite series of the form:
     / 4 = 1 - (1/3) + (1/5) - (1/7) + (1/9) - (1/11) + ...
    There is another novel approach to calculate . Imagine that you have a dart board that is 2 units square. It inscribes a circle of unit radius. The center of the circle coincides with the center of the square. Now imagine that you throw darts at that dart board randomly. Then the ratio of the number of darts that fall within the circle to the total number of darts thrown is the same as the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the square dart board. The area of a circle with unit radius is just square unit. The area of the dart board is 4 square units. The ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the square is / 4.
    To simuluate the throwing of darts we will use a random number generator. The Math class has a random() method that can be used. This method returns random numbers between 0.0 (inclusive) to 1.0 (exclusive). There is an even better random number generator that is provided the Random class. We will first create a Random object called randomGen. This random number generator needs a seed to get started. We will read the time from the System clock and use that as our seed.
    Random randomGen = new Random ( System.currentTimeMillis() );
    Imagine that the square dart board has a coordinate system attached to it. The upper right corner has coordinates ( 1.0, 1.0) and the lower left corner has coordinates ( -1.0, -1.0 ). It has sides that are 2 units long and its center (as well as the center of the inscribed circle) is at the origin.
    A random point inside the dart board can be specified by its x and y coordinates. These values are generated using the random number generator. There is a method nextDouble() that will return a double between 0.0 (inclusive) and 1.0 (exclusive). But we need random numbers between -1.0 and +1.0. The way we achieve that is:
    double xPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
    double yPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
    To determine if a point is inside the circle its distance from the center of the circle must be less than the radius of the circle. The distance of a point with coordinates ( xPos, yPos ) from the center is Math.sqrt ( xPos * xPos + yPos * yPos ). The radius of the circle is 1 unit.
    The class that you will be writing will be called CalculatePI. It will have the following structure:
    import java.util.*;
    public class CalculatePI
    public static boolean isInside ( double xPos, double yPos )
    public static double computePI ( int numThrows )
    public static void main ( String[] args )
    In your method main() you want to experiment and see if the accuracy of PI increases with the number of throws on the dartboard. You will compare your result with the value given by Math.PI. The quantity Difference in the output is your calculated value of PI minus Math.PI. Use the following number of throws to run your experiment - 100, 1000, 10,000, and 100,000. You will call the method computePI() with these numbers as input parameters. Your output will be of the following form:
    Computation of PI using Random Numbers
    Number of throws = 100, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 1000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 10000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 100000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    * Difference = Computed PI - Math.PI
    In the method computePI() you will simulate the throw of a dart by generating random numbers for the x and y coordinates. You will call the method isInside() to determine if the point is inside the circle or not. This you will do as many times as specified by the number of throws. You will keep a count of the number of times a dart landed inside the circle. That figure divided by the total number of throws is the ratio / 4. The method computePI() will return the computed value of PI.
    and below is what i have so far:
    import java.util.*;
    public class CalculatePI
      public static boolean isInside ( double xPos, double yPos )
         double distance = Math.sqrt( xPos * xPos + yPos * yPos );
      public static double computePI ( int numThrows )
        Random randomGen = new Random ( System.currentTimeMillis() );
        double xPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
        double yPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
        int hits = 0;
        int darts = 0;
        int i = 0;
        int areaSquare = 4 ;
        while (i <= numThrows)
            if (distance< 1)
                hits = hits + 1;
            if (distance <= areaSquare)
                darts = darts + 1;
            double PI = 4 * ( hits / darts );
            i = i+1;
      public static void main ( String[] args )
        Scanner sc = new Scanner (System.in);
        System.out.print ("Enter number of throws:");
        int numThrows = sc.nextInt();
        double Difference = PI - Math.PI;
        System.out.println ("Number of throws = " + numThrows + ", Computed PI = " + PI + ", Difference = " + difference );
    }when I tried to compile it says "cannot find variable 'distance' " in the while loop. but i thought i already declare that variable in the above method. Please give me some ideas to solve this problem and please check my program to see if there is any other mistakes.
    Thanks a lot.

    You've declared a local variable, distance, in the method isInside(). The scope of this variable is limited to the method in which it is declared. There is no declaration for distance in computePI() and that is why the compiler gives you an error.
    I won't check your entire program but I did notice that isInside() is declared to be a boolean method but doesn't return anything, let alone a boolean value. In fact, it doesn't even compute a boolean value.

    its taking more time to execute .... that's y is there any other option to execute .exe file other than Runtime.getRuntime().exec("filename");Write proper English and you may be taken more seriously.
    1) it's not "taking more time to execute", whatever that's supposed to mean.
    2) there's no other way to execute something. Not that you should every use even that way anyway
    3) whenever you start thinking of executing external programs from Java, start thinking of not using Java in the first place.

    Hi,
    I am also trying that scenario. So u can

    In the servlet invoke the business method.
    Similar kind of app is in www.roseindia.net
    Hope this would help u.
    Meanwhile if u get any optimal solution, pls post it.

    I had very similar problems with adding the correct JDeveloper .jar files to Tomcat's lib folder, but did eventually resolve my issues.
    The problem I am having now, however, is the following error message:
    Error Message: oracle.jbo.html.RequestParameters.addParameter(Ljava/lang/String;Ljava/lang/String;)V
    Yes, I have deployed the bc4jhtml.jar file from JDeveloper to Tomcat\common\lib!
    My web-app is a very simple BC4J JSP application. I have one BC4J component in its own project and JAR file, and one JSP referencing that BC4J component - I deploy the BC4J JAR along with the WAR file from the JSP project. Needless to say, the JSP works fine within JDeveloper..!
    I'm using JDev 9.0.3 and Tomcat 4.1.12. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    S.

    I like to create a master-detail JSP page using OAF. If any help or guide will be appreciate.

    A Master Detail Page is a basically a game between two VOs(Master and Detail mostly connected through a View Link). You can also have a look at the View Link section in the Dev guide. Page Layouts is one thing which you can take a call yourself.

  • Session-scope variable for JSP page used in a frame

    Hi,
    I don't know if there's a way to do this at the same time:
    (1)- assign session scope to a variable (in order to be able to retrieve recurrently the previous value each time the JSP is called);
    (2)- set its visibility in a way that it could be accessed only by the page that defines it. The JSP is used in a frameset along with an other JSP that can potentially define identical session-scoped variable (You understand why I want to keep them separate)
    session.setAttribute():
    seems not to be the thing I need
    pageContext.setAttribute():
    with SESSION_SCOPE, it behaves the same way as session.setAttribute(). with PAGE_SCOPE, condition (1) can't be satisfied.
    Does anybody have an idea ?
    Thanx in advance.

    I can see that you will not want to maintain two different files for every possible page on the site!
    It may be possible to do something like <frameset rows="*" cols="50%,*">
      <frame name="content1" src="file.jsp?frame=one" >
      <frame name="content2" src="file.jsp?frame=two" >
    </frameset>and then in the jsp<%
    String frame=request.getParameter("frame");
    session.setAttribute(frame+"AttributeName",attributeValue);
    %>This will set up two session attributes - "oneAttributeName" and "twoAttributeName". Depending on how many variables you have, this may prove just as difficult to maintain.
    You may end up having to simply pass url parameters between pages to maintain state within the individual frames, which is far from elegant also.
    I am interested in how you end up solving this one.

  • How to use debug my jdevloper devloped jsp applications using tomcat 4.0?

    hello,
    how to use debug my jdevloper devloped jsp applications using tomcat 4.0?
    how to run with using tomcat path with browser?
    can any one help?
    thanks
    pullareddy

    Hi Pullareddy,
    Charles' answer will work for Servlets in Tomcat, but debugging JSPs is a bit more complicated than debugging Servlets.
    Here's what you need to do:
    (I don't have Tomcat, so I don't know the details of Tomcat configuration files and I can't guarentee that Tomcat provides the flexibility so that you can configure it for debugging JSPs. Each application server is configured a bit differently. Hopefully you can adjust the following instructions to Tomcat.)
    1. You need to replace Tomcat's JSP engine with OJSP and you need to setup debugging parameters for OJSP.
    This is not specifically in the JDev documentation, but you may be able to apply the information found in the topic "Remote Debugging in OC4J".
    Here are some tips:
    A. You'll probably need to specify the following jars in some Tomcat config file: ojsp.jar, ojsputil.jar, xmlparserv2.jar, ojc.jar, and jdev-rt.jar.
    B. The OJSP class name is oracle.jsp.runtimev2.JspServlet.
    C. The debug parameters are:
    debug_mode = true
    developer_mode = true

    2. You need to make Tomcat start the Java command with debugging options. (This is what Charles was talking about. One of the debug options is -XXdebug). This is in the JDev documentation in the topic "Starting a Java Process in Debug Mode". Please read that documentation help topic.
    3. You need to delete any old .java or .class files which were created in the past for your JSP. If you leave old .java or .class files around, then the debugger may not be able to stop at breakpoints in your JSPs. So, be sure to clean up old files.
    4. Set your project settings for remote debugging. This is on the Debugger - Remote panel in the Project Settings dialog box. You probably want either Attach to OJVM or Attach to JPDA. Which radio button you choose depends on what command line options you specified in step 2.

  • Why can I not use random in my CS3 JS

    I'm working on my Thesis and building a graphic design engine in InDesign. I've done something similar in VB on Windows, but as I use a Mac now, I'm trying to work in Javascript. Still getting my footing though.
    A big thing in my engine will be using random numbers. In the CS3 scripting guide there is a script that uses the Math.Random function. I'll reproduce it at the end.
    My problem is:I've copied the script line by line and it fails silently and nothing is created. I feel like maybe the Math.random functions aren't working. If anybody has any ideas as to why this script isn't working.
    Or, more importantly, could anybody suggest anything to get random functions working at all? Even when I try to pare this script down to it's simplest two lines, I get nothing.
    Thanks!
    var myDocument = app.documents.add();
    var myPage = myDocument.pages.item(0);
    var myPageWidth = myDocument.documentPreferences.pageWidth;
    var myPageHeight = myDocument.documentPreferences.pageHeight;
    //Create 10 random page items.
    //for(var myCounter = 0; myCounter < 10; myCounter++){
    myRectangle = myPage.rectangles.add;
    myRectangle.geometricBounds = [0,0,5,5];
    myX1 = myGetRandom(0, myPageWidth, false);
    myY1 = myGetRandom(0, myPageHeight, false);
    myX2 = myGetRandom(0, myPageWidth, false);
    myY2 = myGetRandom(0, myPageHeight, false);
    myRectangle.geometricBounds=[myY1, myX1, myY2, myX2];
    // if(myGetRandom(0, 1, true)){
    // myRectangle.label = "myScriptLabel";
    //var myPageItems = myPage.pageItems.item("myScriptLabel");
    //if(myPageItems.getElements().length != 0){
    // alert("Found " + myPageItems.getElements().length + " page items with the label.");
    function myGetRandom(myStart, myEnd, myInteger){
    var myRandom;
    var myRange = myEnd - myStart;
    if(myInteger == true){myRandom = myStart = Math.round(Math.random());}
    else{myRandom = myStart + Math.floor(Math.random()*myRange); return myRandom;}
    return myRandom;

    This appears to be working fine on Windows, CS3, JS:
    var myPageHeight = app.activeDocument.documentPreferences.pageHeight;
    myY1 = myGetRandom(0, myPageHeight, false);
    alert (myY1);
    Every time I run the script it returns a different value. Perhaps someone can try the same on a Mac?
    [Edit]
    Ha ha ha! Brilliant!
    After copying the entire script it also failed. Took me a few minutes to find the cause.
    myRectangle = myPage.rectangles.add();
    -- you forgot the parentheses (it's a function).
    I saw nothing in the "Undo" after running the script, and it ought to say something like "Undo Add Rectangle". Then a simple
    alert (myRectangle)
    said it was 'native code', rather than "Object [Rectangle]'.
