JSTL 1.0 unterminated tag

I am new to java web development so please bear with me. Can someone please tell me why I get a jsp.error.unterminated tag exception from the following snippet:
<portlet:param name="event.id" value="<c:out: value="${evntContainer.event.id}"/>"/>I am using JSTL 1.0 on tomcat 4.1

You can't nest custom tags as attributes to other custom tags.
For custom tag attributes you can only use expressions. ie <%= expr %> (and ${expr} in a JSP2.0 container)
Given the constraints on JSTL1.0 and Tomcat4.1, then the only expression available is <%= expr %>
Is the <portlet:param> tag your own tag or one from a library?
The common approach is to allow providing the value as the body of a tag
<portlet:param name="event.id"><c:out: value="${evntContainer.event.id}"/></portlet:param>I don't know if the <portlet:param> tag supports that syntax or not. I know that <c:param> does.
If not, then you need to provide the value in an expression
ie <%= evntContainer.getEvent().getId() %>
You may need a <jsp:useBean id="evntContainer" class="....."/> tag on your page so that this would work.

  • JSTL 1.1.2 tags with JDK 1.4.2_12

    Hi,
    We have used JSTL 1.1.2 tags in our application. It works fine with JDK 1.4.2_05 on weblogic server 8.1 sp4. The same application throws error on use with JDK 1.4.2_12. Is any patch available for support of JSTL in JDK 1.4.2_12. Kindly do reply on the same.
    Thanks in advance
    Thanks & Regards

    I ran into a similiar problem with JBuilder 5. The answers on their boards indicate the problem traces to the change Sun made with versioniong class files in JDK1.4.
    Someone offers a patch tool for JBuilder, but Borland does not support it. It will be interesting to see what Oracle does with this problem.

  • JSTL nesting of foreach tag in the c:import

    Ran into the problem when migrated the jstl to 1.2.
    We have the code like below with the c:import and dynamic parameters.
    jstl 1.2 is complaining about the nesting of tags.
    <c:import url="Ixxxxxxxx">
    <c:forEach var="entry" items="${usebean1.htmlParameters}">
    <c:param name="${entry.key}" value="${entry.value}" />
    </c:foreach>
    </c:import>
    What is suggested approach for the c:import with dynamic parameters?
    Any suggestions/solutions will be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    -Sreeni.

    Are you the one who commented out the code you're looking for ?//String desc = StringFactory.getString(attributes.getValue("desc"));You just have to modify you AttributeObject class to hold a new field : String description. And then, it's up to you to create a new constructor or a new setter method.
    Btw, this is not a Swing related question.

  • Unable to use JSTL fn tags in WL 8.1

    hi,
              I am trying to use JSTL functions tags in my struts app, and I am seeing this error...
              Error in using tag library uri='http://java.sun.com/jstl/functions' prefix='fn': Tag Library Descriptor contains no Tag descriptions
              probably occurred due to an error in /newgui/customerservice/AdditionalLines.jsp line 4:
              <%@ taglib uri = "http://java.sun.com/jstl/functions" prefix = "fn"%>
              I have the entry in web.xml as below...
              <taglib>
              <taglib-uri>http://java.sun.com/jstl/functions</taglib-uri>
              <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/tlds/fn.tld</taglib-location>
              </taglib>
              I also have the fn.tld in the tlds folder along with other core and sql tlds. core tlds are working (they are 1.0.4 version), but I am having trouble using fn tags.
              btw, I am running the struts web-app on WL 8.1 Sp4 (or sp3) not sure...
              Any help is greatly appreciated...
              thanks,
              Kiran :)

    Update: I just looked up the WL version and it's 8.1 sp3
              So, I guess, JSTL 1.1 (which includes jstl fn tags) is not supported by WL.... Someone correct me if I am wrong.
              Thanks,
              pal :)

  • Selectively displaying certain items in a list  // logic tag in adf

    Hi,
    I have a tree the children of which can be of two types based on a child property. I want to be able to display only one type of children in a for loop. I could not find an <af: if > kind of tag that will let me check a child property in that i can use to filter in a for loop.
    <af:menuBar>
    <af:forEach var="subsystem" items="#{menuModelTree.instance}">
    <af:menu text="#{subsystem.name}">
    <af:forEach var="item" items="#{subsystem.childrenItems}">
    ????? if item.childProperty == certain type then {do the following } ??????
    <af:commandMenuItem text="#{item.name}"
    actionListener="#{menuModelBase.displayForm}"
    action="#{item.getDestination}"/>
    </af:forEach>
    </af:menu>
    </af:forEach>
    </af:menuBar>
    Thanks,

    User,
    JSTL has an if tag, but don't use it!
    I could recommend a couple of approaches... if you only want to display one type of children, but a method in your backing bean (subsystem) that would return only the items of interest and use that in your af:forEach loop.
    Second possibility would be to loop through everything, but set the"rendered" property of your af:commandMenuItem to "#{item.childProperty == certain type}"

  • Problems in developing custom JSP tags

    I have problems in debugging custom JSP tags. Sometimes the doStartTag is not called on tags but the doEndTag is called. I don't know why.
    Thanks.

    Fahr--
    A word of caution -- NetUI did not ship a JSP tag SDK in 8.x, and
    we're making no compatibility guarantees for custom JSP tags written on
    the 8.x release and future releases.
    You can accomplish the same sort of functionality with a combination
    of the <netui-data:getData> tag and JSTL 1.0. This solution would
    probably provide similar functionality and be more future-proof relative
    to JSTL and the NetUI tags currently being developed in Beehive.
    Hope that helps.

    We are in the midst of creating our own JSP tags to work with datasources.
    In an example where you would need to compare two different datasources how would you do this?
    ie.
    <prefix:isGreater dataSource="{pageflow.column1}" dataSourceToCompare="{pageFlow.column2}" />
    How would I evaluate what column2 is since the tag will only resolve one data source
    this.evaluateDataSource();
    Any pointers you can provide would be appreciated, or if there is a library of jsp tags that evaluate objects using datasources already created, that would even be better.

  • Escaping HTML in a Custom Tag

    Hello, all. I am sadly failing to find a library function to escape HTML in Java. I'm writing a tag that used to use JSTL as a custom tag and don't know exactly where to find the functionality the JSTL is using. Consider the old JSP:
    <c:forEach items="${versions}" var="version">
         <tr>
             <td><c:out value="${version.version}"/></td>
             <td><c:out value="${version.releaseDate}"/></td>
        </tr>
    </c:forEach>and the new custom tag class:
    public class VersionTableTag implements Tag
        private PageContext context;
        private Tag parent;
        public int doEndTag() throws JspException
            return EVAL_PAGE;
        public int doStartTag() throws JspException
            JspWriter out = context.getOut();
            List versions;
            try
                versions = (List)(context.getVariableResolver().resolveVariable("versions"));
            } catch (ELException e)
                versions = new ArrayList();
            try
                out.println("<table>");
                out.println("<tr>");
                out.println("<th>Version</th>");
                out.println("<th>Release Date</th>");
                out.println("</tr>");

    *1.* Is it possible to define a tag using a JSP document rather than a Java class? All I'm really after is something similar to an include but I want to be able to provide attributes to it in the long run.
    *2.* Is there some library function I can use to escape the HTML in the VO above?

    1. Is it possible to define a tag using a JSP document rather than a Java class? All I'm really after is something similar to an include but I want to be able to provide attributes to it in the long run.Yes. It was introduced with JSP2.0: tag files.
    Just like a JSP lets you write a servlet easily, a tag file lets your write a Custom tag class easily.
    http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/bnama.html
    2. Is there some library function I can use to escape the HTML in the VO above?
    There is one provided in the jakarta commons "lang" library.
    http://commons.apache.org/lang/
    They provide a class "StringEscapeUtils" which will do most of the common escaping that you require.
    How hard is it to write something that replaces & < and > though?

    All you need is the standard.jar and jstl.jar in your WEB-INF/lib directory (and maybe an XMLParser if you are using the <xml: tags).
    Anyway. That may not be your main problem. Make sure you are using the correct version of JSTL for you server.
    If you are using Tomcat 4, you need JSTL 1.0
    If you are using Tomcat 5, you need JSTL 1.1

Ignore the IDE and just execute the code. Does it work without any compilation errors or runtime exceptions? If so, then there's a problem in the IDE.

  • Difference between JSTL and JSF

    Hi
    I am little bit confuse between JSTL and JSF. can one tell me what is difference between JSTL and JSF ?
    Thanks & regards,
    Ben

    from suns site
    The JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library (JSTL) encapsulates as simple tags the core functionality common to many Web applications. JSTL has support for common, structural tasks such as iteration and conditionals, tags for manipulating XML documents, internationalization tags, and SQL tags.

  • Accessing objects with jstl

    Hello forum,
    A question about JSTL - one of the things I have not figured out until now. How can you access an object declared by a specialized tag? Generaly you c:set the variable you wish and you use EL to malipulate it. But how can you access a locale object or resource bundle object? Let's take the bundle object for example:
    The code that would declare it would be:
    <fmt:setLocale value="theLocale"/>
    <fmt:bundle basename="thebasename"/>
    Suppose that later in the code you want to access the created resource bundle object - how can you do that? Obviously a resource bundle object has been created, but how can you call one of its methods?
    Thanks in advance,
    Michael

    "and I really I am not that willing to decide that I will revert them to JSTL, at least not if they are really long"
    Well, right there is your problem. You will need to decide to do it, or not. You are experiencing one of the major problems of NOT using JSTL... when scriptlets get long they are difficult to maintain and change (which is why you shouldn't use them from the beginning.. but that is not pertinent to this topic).
    The issue is that some JSTL and some custom Tags have their own means of working with objects without sharing those objects with the application (it preserves encapsulation.. they can only be sure something is kept correct if they handle it themselves and don't let others mess with it).
    "This is a major problem for using jstl."
    This isn't a problem with JSTL, it is a problem of combining JSTL with scriptlets. JSTL should be used as a replacement for scriplets, in my opinion, not alongside them. It makes it much easier to
    1) plan what you are doing when coding
    2) read the code and understand it later when maintaining.
    So my advice would be to stick with one or the other (further I would suggest going all the way with JSTL, but the time of converting old scriptlet code is a negative that you will have to measure yourself...)

  • Newbie Jakarta JSTL not working.

    Hi all,
    I think this is the right place for asking questions on Jakarta JSTL Standard 1.0 tag libraries. I downloaded this file from Jakarta site - jakarta-taglibs-20030908.zip. Deployed the standard-doc.war in Tomcat 4.1.27. Run the demo standard-examples/elsupport/Out.jsp -General-Purpose Tags Examples - and it is giving the error message in browser window.
    This absolute uri (http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core) cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application
    Is it necessary to add the tld declaration in web.xml ?.
    Then I added the tld declaration in web.xml
    <taglib>
    <taglib-uri>http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core</taglib-uri>
    <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/c.tld</taglib-location>
    </taglib>
    JSP page refers to it as
    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %>
    restarted Tomcat and it gives the same error message.
    What is wrong. I looked at the c.tld. It have the following uri at the top
    <uri>http://java.sun.com/jstl/core</uri>
    So I changed the uri in web.xml and JSP to this.
    It still gives the error message.
    This absolute uri (http://java.sun.com/jstl/core) cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application
    On looking at the WEB-INF directory I found that there is one c-rt.tld. Do I have to add this in web.xml ?.
    Why the sample application not containing the taglib declaration in web.xml ?
    rgds
    Antony Paul

    First, you don't need to put anything in web.xml. Nothing, not a single change. DON'T CHANGE web.xml. OK?
    Compare those two URIs
    http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core
    http://java.sun.com/jstl/core
    see the difference?
    The URI including "jsp" is the "new" one for version 1.1 (which shifts JSTL under the jsp spec)
    I think you may have picked up one of the nightly builds. Probably they have modified their examples to work with the new version of JSTL.
    Anyway, try this page:
    http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi#Release%20Builds
    Go down to taglibs, and then click on the link for standard-1.0
    The file should be something like jakarta-taglibs-standard-current.zip
    Oh yeah - and the c-rt.tld is an alternative tag library that uses standard JSP runtime expressions rather than the EL. They recommend to use the EL versions.
    Good luck,
    evnafets
