JTable cell content width

I have a JTable (actually it's a JXTreeTable but I don't think that matters), and I want to find the coordinate of the right side of the content in the furthest column to the right. Not the bounds of the cell, the bounds of the contents (text) of that cell. Same thing for the left side.
Put another way, I want to get the bounds of the contents of a row--not the whole row, but the actual text contents.
We were doing this for JTree and it was working by just getting JTree.getPathBounds(), but for a table, getting the cell bounds gets the size of the entire cell, not just the contents.
Thanks!

You could probably use the table.prepareRenderer(...) metthod to get the component doing the renderering and then get the preferred size of that component.

  • Resizing the JTable Cell horizontal width

    Sir/Madam,
    How can i resize the JTable cell's horizontal width. I know the JTable's column width can be resized. I dont want to resize the entire JTable column. But i need to resize individual JTable cell's horizontal width. Thanks in advance.

    I think that's not possible. What kind of results are you expecting ? If the cells of a column are different widths, what are you going to do with the extra space of the narrower cells ?
    What are you displaying in the cells ? Maybe you can narrow the contents of the cells, and not the cells.

  • Setting alignment of cell content in jtable??

    hi,
    does anybody know how i can set the content of my jTable cells to the center of each cell. thanx, mischa.

    Did you search the forum???
    Using keywords "+jtable +center" would be a good place to start.

  • TableView auto resize columns based on header text width or cell content

    Is there a method on the tableview or tablecolumn to automatically resize based on the content of the hearder or data?
    If not what approach can used used with JavaFX to calculate the string width based on the current font?

    The table column size is inconsistent, I set the columns in the table view and the items in the initialize method. I execute a service and task from a button action that loads data into the list, if I don't reset the columns in the table view in the succeed method then each column is the same width regardless of the content in the cells. If I do reset the table columns in the succeed method then the columns are resized based on content.
    I don't think it should be a requirement to reset the columns just to get the column widths to set based on the content in the cells. Is there a method on the table column or view that will resize the cells based on the cell content? I would prefer the largest value; column header content or the longest cell content for a column.

  • Cell contents selected on focus in JTable

    I'm new to swing and trying to get the contents of a JTable cell to be selected when the cell receives focus. I've looked at the TableCellEditor interface and the like, but I just can't seem to get the hang of how it all fits together. Any hits would be appreciated. Thanks.

    There are several ways to do this, but here is one to get you started:
    First, subclass DefaultCellEditor. Here, I have duplicated all the constructors from DefaultCellEditor but only modified the one used for text.
    I have added a inner class, FocusEventHandler, to capture the focus events. In the focusGained method is the code to do the selectAll. (I use the invokeLater so that the selectAll happens after pending events are complete. A mouse click might be interpreted by the text box to position the cursor, so we want the selectAll to happen after that.)
    Then, in the constructor for text, I save the text box so the focusGained method knows which text box to selectAll for, register the event handler, and (optionally) change the ClickCountToStart.
    public class NewDefaultCellEditor extends javax.swing.DefaultCellEditor {
    javax.swing.JTextField saveTextField = null;
    // Event handler
    public class FocusEventHandler implements java.awt.event.FocusListener {
         public void focusGained(java.awt.event.FocusEvent e) {
              javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable () {public void run() {saveTextField.selectAll();}});
         public void focusLost(java.awt.event.FocusEvent e) {}
    // Constructors
    public NewDefaultCellEditor(javax.swing.JCheckBox checkBox) {
         super(checkBox);
    public NewDefaultCellEditor(javax.swing.JComboBox comboBox) {
         super(comboBox);
    public NewDefaultCellEditor(javax.swing.JTextField textField) {
         super(textField);
         saveTextField = textField; // save text field for later
         textField.addFocusListener(new FocusEventHandler()); // register event handler
         setClickCountToStart(1); // change # of mouse clicks to begin editing
    }Now you just have to tell the table to use this Cell Editor. One way to do this is:
    MyTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(0).setCellEditor(new NewDefaultCellEditor(new javax.swing.JTextField()));
    (this sets the editor for column 0)

  • Different jpopup menus items depending on content in a Jtable cell

    Hi,
    Is it possible if a popup menu have different items in it, depending on the content of a jtable cell??

    In the mouse listener where you are displaying the popup, change it as appropriate before displaying it.

  • Shading part of a JTable Cell dependent upon the value of the cell

    Hi
    Was hoping some one woudl be able to provide some help with this. I'm trying to create a renderer that will "shade" part of a JTable cell's background depending upon the value in the cell as a percentage (E.g. if the cell contains 0.25 then a quarter of the cell background will be shaded)
    What I've got so far is a renderer which will draw a rectangle whose width is the relevant percentage of the cell's width. (i.e. the width of the column) based on something similar I found in the forum but the part I'm struggling with is getting it to draw this rectangle in any cell other than the first cell. I've tried using .getCellRect(...) to get the x and y position of the cell to draw the rectangle but I still can't make it work.
    The code for my renderer as it stands is:
    import java.awt.Component;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.Graphics2D;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import javax.swing.JTable;
    import javax.swing.table.TableCellRenderer;
    public class PercentageRepresentationRenderer extends JLabel implements TableCellRenderer{
         double percentageValue;
         double rectWidth;
         double rectHeight;
         JTable table;
         int row;

                   percentageValue = numValue.doubleValue();
                   rectHeight = table.getRowHeight(row);
                   rectWidth = percentageValue * table.getColumnModel().getColumn(column).getWidth();
              return this;

            g2d.fillRect(x,y, new Double(rectWidth).intValue(), new Double(rectHeight).intValue());
            super.paintComponent(g);
    }and the following code produces a runnable example:

  • Drag and Drop of cell content between 2 tables

    Hi Guys,
    Iam into implementing drag and drop of cell contents between 2 different tables,say Table1 and Table2.(Iam not dragging and dropping rows or cells,Just copying the content of one cell to another).
    Have extended the java tutorial class "TableTransferHandler" and "StringTransferHandler" under http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/examples/dnd/index.html#ExtendedDndDemo to satisfy my needs.
    The drag is enabled for Table1 and table2 as follows.
    jTable1.setDragEnabled(true);
    jTable1.setTransferHandler(new TableTransferHandler());
    jTable2.setDragEnabled(true);
    jTable2.setTransferHandler(new TableTransferHandler());
    Dont be taken aback with the code I have put.It just to show what I have done..

    Hi Guys,
    Iam into implementing drag and drop of cell contents between 2 different tables,say Table1 and Table2.(Iam not dragging and dropping rows or cells,Just copying the content of one cell to another).
    Have extended the java tutorial class "TableTransferHandler" and "StringTransferHandler" under http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/examples/dnd/index.html#ExtendedDndDemo to satisfy my needs.
    The drag is enabled for Table1 and table2 as follows.
    jTable1.setDragEnabled(true);
    jTable1.setTransferHandler(new TableTransferHandler());
    jTable2.setDragEnabled(true);
    jTable2.setTransferHandler(new TableTransferHandler());
    Dont be taken aback with the code I have put.It just to show what I have done..
    My questions are put at the end of the post..
    //String Transfer Handler class.
    public abstract class StringTransferHandler extends TransferHandler {
        protected abstract String exportString(JComponent c);
        protected abstract void importString(JComponent c, String str);
        protected abstract void cleanup(JComponent c, boolean remove);
        protected Transferable createTransferable(JComponent c) {
            return new StringSelection(exportString(c));
        public int getSourceActions(JComponent c) {
            return COPY_OR_MOVE;
        public boolean importData(JComponent c, Transferable t) {
            if (canImport(c, t.getTransferDataFlavors())) {
                try {
                    String str = (String)t.getTransferData(DataFlavor.stringFlavor);
                    importString(c, str);
                    return true;
                } catch (UnsupportedFlavorException ufe) {
                } catch (IOException ioe) {
            return false;
        protected void exportDone(JComponent c, Transferable data, int action) {
            cleanup(c, action == MOVE);
        public boolean canImport(JComponent c, DataFlavor[] flavors) {
              JTable table = (JTable)c;
             int selColIndex = table.getSelectedColumn();
            for (int i = 0; i < flavors.length; i++) {
                if ((DataFlavor.stringFlavor.equals(flavors))&& (selColIndex !=0)) {
    return true;
    return false;

  • How to write an element in a  JTable Cell

    Probably it's a stupid question but I have this problem:
    I have a the necessity to build a JTable in which, when I edit a cell and I push a keyboard button, a new Frame opens to edit the content of the cell.
    But the problem is how to write something in the JTable cell, before setting its model. Because, I know, setCellAT() method of JTree inserts the value in the model and not in the table view. And repainting doesn't function!
    What to do??
    Thanks

    Hi there
    Depending on your table model you should normally change the "cell value" of the tablemodel.
    This could look like:
    JTable table = new JTable();
    TableModel model = table.getModel();
    int rowIndex = 0, columnIndex = 0;
    model.setValueAt("This is a test", rowIndex, columnIndex);
    The tablemodel should then fire an event to the view (i.e. JTable) and the table should be updated.
    Hope this helps you

    In summary, you have one or more columns for which the data must be wholly visible - correct? If you need all the columns to show the whole of their data, you are goinf to have to expand the table, otherwise you can expand a column with something like
    myTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(whichever).setPreferredWidth(whatever);

  • Way to listen for change in JTable cell?

    I am having troubles trying to catch a key event while the user is entering text inside a given JTable cell (x/y location). The JTable only seems to manage String objects in it's cells so I can't place a JTextField in there with a KeyListener on it.
    Currently, I can only get control of the application once the user has left the cell they are editing.
    Does anyone have an example of a JTable 'cell KeyListener' scenario? At this point I want to see if I can print 'hello world' each time I type a character within a cell. Then I'll go from there....

    If you want to know when the contents of a cell have been updated you should use a TableModelListener.
    If you want to know when a character is added/removed from the cell editor then you need to first understand how this works with a simple text field.
    Typically you would use a DocumentListener to receive notifies of a change to the text field. However, within the DocumentEvent you wouldn't be able to change the text field as this notification comes after the text field has already been updated.
    If you need to ability to intercept changes to the text field before they happen, then you would need to use a DocumentFilter. An example of using a DocumentFilter is given in the Swing tutorial on [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/generaltext.html#filter]Text Component Features.
    Once you get your regular text field working the way you want, the next step to create a DefaultCellEditor using this JTextField and use this editor in your JTable. The above tutorial also has a section on using editors in a table.

  • MouseListener for JTable cells using html

    Hello,
    I'm trying to write a MouseListener that determines whether the cursor is positioned over a certain string within a JTable cell. The cell contains an html string to allow for some formatting.
    For instance, the table data for a certain cell could be "<html><b>SomeBoldText</b>moreText<html>". I would like to detect when a mouse click occurs on the bold text.
    My current solution is to create the glyph vector corresponding to the cell content stripped of all html tags and then check if the cursor position is within one of the glyphs that form the string. However, that obviously doesn't take into account the formatting done by html, so its not working very well.
    Any suggestions?

    the only way you could possibly do this, if you used JEditorPane as a renderer. even then i'm not sure.

  • JTextField/JTable-cell Button

    Is there any known efficient methods of creating the JTextField or JTable-cell Button as like in Forte's Component Inspector window where you click on the property value field and the value is displayed just left of a small button labelled "..." ie: [some text field with value][...] also referred to as the "ellipsis" buttons, or will most answers to this question simply describe the layout of a JField-JButton combination? The action from clicking on the [...] button aligned right of the JTextField simply invokes or displays a larger input interface in which upon completion of the entered data, returns the input to the related JTextField.
    Thanks to anybody for any help with this, and perhaps in return, I may be able to answer any non-gui java questions, or some not so unfamilliar GUI questions.

    Hello StanislavL and Lutianxiong,
    I remember asking this question some time ago, and the time has come again for me to seek this functionality. I have finally achieved the functionality and thought I would post the answer for anybody else. I had not realized that I had recieved a solution/reply to my original question as I come here to post the answer, and in fact, my solution does appear to be very similiar to your reply, StanislavL. As for you, Lutianxiong and other seekers of this info, here is my solution with a JFileChooser style input for the 3rd column which only shows gif,jpg and png files:
