Probably a PC issue, you can try calling AppleCare, you are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase and can find the phone number in the owners manual. Also please look over:

Thomas,
It would also be extremely helpful to those trying to help you if you complted your Profile so we at least know what iMac and version of OS X is installed. Click Your Stuff in the upper right then click Profile and complete the necessary fields including what part of the planet you're located.

check the lower right corner of the iTunes window
if you don't see this while the homeshared library is loaded, home sharing hasn't been set up properly.

    no.
    that's expected behavior.

  • I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my imac to macbook. Using either a firewire or network, as I'm waiting to select items to migrate, I receive an error message that "the application quit unexpectedly". My imac is newer.

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

  • I bought a new iMac today. I'm using migration assistant to move all my software, but the time just keeps getting longer. It says connect an Ethernet cable for faster data transfer. I did, but that doesn't seem to help. Any ideas?

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts with all files and photos saved 3 times on same iMac !! Any idea how to avoid this ?

Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

  • HT4413 I am trying to use migration assistant to move everything from snow leopard (10.6.8) to mountain lion (10.8.3) using a direct machine to machine ethernet cable connection but it stalls out at about 17 minutes remaining.  Thoughts on how to proceed?

Have you set both to never sleep?
Is the source (old) Mac's software up to date (including the Migration Assistant for Mac OS X Snow Leopard update)?
Is the old Mac healthy?  Have you run Verify Disk on it lately?
The estimates are wildly inaccurate under the best of circumstances.  How long has it been stuck?

  • Trying to use Migration Assistant to restore from Time Machine backup but it keeps "Looking for other computers..."

    Hi!
I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15" and I wanted to transfer my old files from a previous Time Machine backup done with my old MacBook Pro 15".
Both computers have Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) installed.
I always used Migration Assistant without any problem to accomplish this task, but now I don't know why it's stuck on a screen displaying "Looking for other computers...". What? What computer? I'm trying to restore from a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive, so I don't understand what computer it is looking for.
Do you have any idea to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

  • Weird error message when trying to use migration assistant?

We gave my mom a Macbook Pro for Mother's Day. While trying to set it up for her using migration assistant pc to mac, her Dell kept coming up with an error message saying msidcrl40.dll is missing?? What the heck does that even mean? Needless to say migration assistant would not run on her computer. We're going to take it to the Apple store tomorrow but does anyone have a suggestion on how we can fix it ourselves so we don't have to head to the store? Can they even help us at the Apple store? I also wanted to them to help us with transfering her Quicken data from her Dell to iBank because I'm scared I'll mess it up.

You can't do that.  Instead, just remove "aaa new-model" from the config then try to deploy it.  Alternatively, you can try "merge mode," but that will send the whole config back to the device.

    Hi there wendyfromnewross,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1368
Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General > Date & Time.
Note: Time Zone may list another city in your time zone.
Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by tapping Settings > General > Software Update (iOS 5 or later) or connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking Check for Update on your device's Summary page.
Check and verify that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you're on a device with cellular service, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
Note: If connected to cellular data, larger items may not download. You may need to connect to Wi-Fi to download apps, videos, and podcasts.
Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. You can check the user guide for your device for help with connecting to the Internet.
Make sure that other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router.
If the issue persists, try troubleshooting your Wi-Fi networks and connections.
    -Griff W.

  • I am trying to use migration assistant to transfer my files from my old Macbook to my new Macbook Pro, but it keeps messing up after I enter the passcode. Help?

I have already updated my Migration Assistant program and changed my FireWall settings to allow all incoming connections, but Migration Assistant still isn't working. I get all the way to the passcode verification step, and then it stops working. On my new computer, a message pops up saying that it could not connect to my old computer. On my old computer, I can enter the passcode, but then the little spinny beachball shows up and then Migration Assistant loses its connection and begins to "look for other computers." How do I fix this? My old computer is operating on Leopard and my new computer is operating on Mountain Lion.

You can do it wirelessly, but that will take some time... you could also purchase a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter or a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. That would certainly be faster. You should be able to purchase either adapter at your local Apple Store or at the online Apple Store.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Wiped iMac clean now can't use migration assistant

Apple told me to wipe my mac cause of a wifi issue I am having. So I did and reinstalled mountain lion. I have two time machine backups one on a connected external drive and another on a external drive connected to my AirPort Extreme.  I start up migration assistant and none of my backups can be found. The external drive that is connected to my drive is partitioned into three spaces one is vdeo files and the other is cloned drive ant the third is my second time machine back up. But it can't see the time chine it can see the cloned drive. I use Super Duper to make the clone I don't know how to use the clone but I make one just to be. Safe so I don't loose any of my data. My system is up to date but I did see a update that popped up this morning and that's the only update not installed on my machine.

OK. A couple of things. Not sure why it doesn't mount the TM drive but you can certainly use your SD clone to migrate. The issue right now is that since you've exited Setup Assistant you've already created an account. As I said, that will mess things up for you.
You might just erase and clone onto your internal but this will restore any problems you were having.
The other way would be to erase & re-install the system and then do the migration in Setup Assistant.
Both of these do defeat the purpose of a clean install, though. Have you isolated what the problem is yet?
Does it run properly on the clean install?
