The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
☞ high ambient temperature
☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • HP Envy Fan Suddenly Runs All the Time

A few weeks ago, I sent my HP ENVY 15t-j000 Quad Edition Notebook PC (product number E4T17AV) to HP because my trackpad was especially stiff, squeaky, and unpleasant to use. After they sent it back, my hardrive was wiped. I restored all of my files, and despite some permissions issues, that has gone smoothly. However, ever since I've begun using my Envy again, the fan runs constantly and the computer is always warm. I've had it for about a year with no serious issues, and the fan never ran like this before I got my computer back from HP. The fan even runs when the computer starts up and there are no programs open. This is obviously a little annoying. Does anyone have some suggestions?
    Miranda

    Hello @MirandaSnow ,
Welcome back to the HP Forums!
I understand after having your notebook services the fan constantly runs and is getting warm.
Can you tell me if you are using any software to manage the fan speeds and what operating system you are using? To see which version of Windows you are using click here: Which Windows operating system am I running?
Here's 2 documents to get you started: Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly, PC is Warmer than Normal and Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating
You can find a detailed guide to disassemble the notebook for better cleaning here: Maintenance and Service Guide. Please do not remove the fan/heat sink unless you have new thermal paste to apply.
Let me know if either of these help.

  • I want my fan to run all the time on power adapter, any guru know how?

After buring out one hard drive, and getting tired of hauling a mini-fan and 1/2" foot spacers around with me between motels, I want a way to force the powerbook fan to run at full speed all-the-time when the powerbook is connected to a/the power adapter. Anybody out there know of a "patch" / "script" / "shell add-on" that will do this on 10.2.x?

Trust me, you don't want to do this. That's not how they are designed to run. If your machine is overheating, consider this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
And perhaps a notebook cooler, like this one by Antec. And when get back home, run the hardware test that came with your machine:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
If your machine is under AppleCare, I would take it in for service if any issues are detected.
Also note if your battery is under the battery exchange program:

  • GT60 0NC, no GPU and fan at 100% all the time

    Hello.
Recently after many tries to solve nvlddmkm.sys problems I've got final crash. After which my OS could not see my GPU and fan was spinning at full speed. It was after underclocking shader clock from 1240MHz to 1200MHz and opening a game. The screen froze and at the bottom of the it, there was black belt through the screen with RGB colours dots in random locations. Now after full reinstall of the OS from win7 64bit to win8.1 64bit, this all still persist.
Any ideas would be good, as I could not see nor find any solution to this.
    My current config is:
    -MSI laptop GT60 0NC
    -NVIDIA GPU GeForce GTX 670M
    -Intel Core i7-3630QM
    -Windows 8.1 Pro N 64bit

So to settle the fan down I would have to disable dGPU. Not just unplug it but disable it. And to do this I would probably need unlocked BIOS. Correct me if I am wrong, if not I would appreciate any leads how to do this.
And if my dGPU is broken I can at least try the oven. And question about further actions, can i access mini PCI-e in MSI GT60 0NC in any way? To try connecting external GPU via EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock. I do have GTX 460 from my old PC so I am just wondering.

  • Fan(s) running all the time

When running Mainstage, the fan(s) on my 17" Macbook Pro (2007) stay running whether I'm playing music or if it's just sitting there. The laptop is maxxed out with 3GB, and CPU usage is very low. If I exit the program, the fans stop after a minute or two. Everything seems to work OK, but I wouldn't think it should be running the fans like that.

I should note that I thought it may be a sensor, but this only happens with Mainstage.

  • My Fan is running all the time without any reason,

I had a trojaner-but i deleted everything from the Harddisk-
During the deleted HD the Fann was running too!

Turn the computer off and on again.  Fans still running?
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) usually resolves fan issues.

  • My fan is on all the time - possible overheating; software cause?

I’ve got a 17” G4 powerbook running Panther (OS10.3.9). It has been doing great but lately I’m noticing that the fan is running all the time. The thing sits on one of those aluminum wedge-shaped platforms (for max. air flow) on my desk and the room isn’t very hot. I have a temp monitor running on it and it says 52 C, even though the machine isn’t doing anything computational. I’ve also gotten one warning from the SMART sensor on the internal drive about a possible future failure due to high heat. I do know that my disk space is running low (2 Gigs when I boot up, which slowly disappears as I work). Is there anything software-related that can be the cause of this or do I definitely need to send it to a repair shop? If the latter, then where do I send it? My AppleCare is surely expired now… Is an Apple store my best bet, or an independent repair place, or what?

I have a very similar problem. My G4 has been running great since I picked it up in January. But, in the last couple days my fan has been running real loud and the machine in general has been hot. Today was watching some youtube and my machine started to freeze up all togeather (a problem I've never had before) as the fan started sound extra loud. As I tried to power down my machine the fan started to make a more grinding type of sound and cause my whole laptop to vibrate. I just really want to know the best coarse of action here. Should I take my mahine to my mac people and have them replace the fan? Is this a common problem? What is this a cronic problem that is a symtom of somthing more ominoius?
    Thanks for you're help!!!

  • Fan Runs All the time and computer is slow!!!

    Hello All,
My fan is running all the time, the battery won´t hold it´s charge like in the beginning, it´s a replacement battery, but the computer is starting to act erratically. I think it may be a temperature problem, but am not sure what to do about it.
    Help!!!
    SEQU

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
First, I would run your Apple hardware test, to ensure the fan is operating correctly. Find the original OS X disc that came with your system that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert it, reboot holding the option key down, choose Apple hardware test, click the arrow to the right, follow directions and choose the extended test. You should hear the fan come on as it tests it. Does it give you any error messages? If you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do the same testing.
Assuming the hardware checks out, when you hear the fan go on, bring up your activity monitor, which is on your hard drive in applications/utilities. Do you see any program consistently using 50% or more of the system? That would cause your system to run hot.
Do you have any print jobs which didn't complete normally? OS X can try and complete the job, which can use CPU cycles, and generate heat.
You can download a temperature monitor from http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html if you want to monitor the system temperature.
On your battery, what is the full charge capacity and cycle count? Click the blue apple, about this mac, more info, and Power. Also, how long a charge does it hold?

  • Fan running all the time - 2011 21.5 inch i5 iMac

I purchased a new 2011 21.5-inch: 2.7GHz i5 on Friday just gone (2 days ago). All was going well with the new toy until this morning (Sunday).
Suddenly the CPU fan was running all the time and at full speed when the computer was not under any real load - very noisy.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC several times now. Within 30 seconds of each reboot the CPU fan reaches 4000 rpm and stays there.
When I run a hardware test I get the following error - Error 4SNS/1/C0000008:TS2p--124. This error is detected under both the quick and extended tests.
I do have to say that I am disappointed that 2 days out of the box it looks like I am return the iMac to the Authorised Reseller.
Can anyone confirm my understanding that:
    a) the CPU fan running loud and hard (4000 rpm) when not under load is NOT normal
    b) the Error code above relates to the logic board
    c) next step is take it back to Apple or the authorized reseller from where it was purchased.
    Cheers
    Shaun

    4SNS/1/C0000008:TS2P--124
When U install the SSD under the optical drive(OD), the air from the OD fan that was supposed to swing under the OD to exit on the uppper vent has no where to go and hence swings across and exits mostly through the vent on the other side near the camera whereon lies a Skin sensor, which blows away/damages tricking the iMac to believe that the CPU is hot and the CPU fan starts to run at full speed of 4000rpm and the Apple hardware shows error 4SNS/1/C0000008:TS2P--124.
This skin sensor will then need to be replaced.
The CPU Fan cannot be controlled by any software.
    The only options available are:
1.Change the primary HDD with a SSD.This will result in the HDD fan running at a higher speed as the SSD does not have any moving parts. The HDD fan sensor gets to believe that the HDD is hot since it does not get inputs from the SSD.Once you change to SSD you can use software to control the HDD or the Optical fans.
2.Change the Optical Disk drive with a "SSD in a Optical Drive(OD) Caddy".This will result in the optical drive fan running at a higher speed as the SSD does not have any moving parts. The OD fan sensor gets to believe that the OD is hot since it does not get inputs from the SSD.Once you change to SSD you can use software to control the HDD or the Optical fans.
Do not use the OWC or other dual drive kit that advice U to put a next SSD under the OD, unless ur iMac is under warranty or u have plenty of technical skills & luck.

  • Mail and Safari still freeze all the time-help

Even with the latest Mavericks updates, Apple mail and Safari freeze contstantly to the point that I can't send email or use Safari. I had after the initial mavericks release gotten mail to function by shutting off 2 Gmail accounts I had on my MacPro. After the update that supposedly fixed the Gmail issues, I turned on my Gmail accounts and Mail started freezing almost immediately on startup. Was able to get in and shut the accounts don again, but Mail keeps freezing. I even removed the Gmail accounts from Mail prefs, but that didn't help either. I can usually get Mail to launch and for the most part can read email, but if I try to respond, once i type and email and try to send, Mail freezes and I have to force quit. Once Mail hangs Safari hangs shortly thereafter or if it's not even launched I can't launch.
I have been using macs for a long time and have never had such a bad time with an upgrade. Have tried most of the solutions posted, and am baffled as to how to make things work.
    Any suggestions welcome.

  • Laptop fan runs all the time, broker runtime cpu usage after Windows 10 final upgrade

ENVY 17t-J100 Leap Motion, 16 GB RAM, i7, SSD primary, HDD secondary drives. Avast antivirus free. Windows Firewall. The laptop had Windows 8.1 and everything was great. I did the Windows 10 Home free upgrade on Day 1. Everything seemed fine. Fingerprinter reader and everything works. Great. But then I noticed that the fan was always running and the left side of the metal casing gets hot. In task manager heat map sorted by CPU usage, Broker Runtime is at the top. Not much ram, about 10 MB. But the CPU usage is always 20% and higher. Doesn't seem like much. But it makes the fan run all the time and the laptop heats up with it running all the time. Anyone else seen this? General internet searching shows this has been an issue with Broker Runtime since Windows 8 and not unique to any brand of computer. But it wasn't like this when I was using WIndows 8.1 One forum said it was the P2P Windows update feature and my laptop was sharing updates. So I disabled that and rebooted. No change. Now I see some people saying it is the Live Tiles features in the Start Menu. But I had live tiles with the WIndows 8 menu and no issues. The only way to disable Live Tiles globally is to edit the registry, and I shouldn't have to do that for this. And I like Live Tiles. So not sure that really is the issue either.

Have all Windows Updates on Windows 10 been applied since installing it? I know there are people weary to update Windows 10 since there have been a few news reports with some people having the infinite reboot loop after installing a particular update  For me, yes. All updates applied and automatic updates enabled. This Runtime Broker issue has been there since the upgrade and all updates to this point.

  • Fan runs all the time after upgrade to 10.4

Upgraded to 10.4 about a week ago and now the fan runs all the time. I lowered the processor to reduced performance because the fan noise was very loud. Doing this lowered the fan speed but did not stop it. Memory usage is not a problem, shows 75% free.
Before 10.4 was using 10.3 fan ran at times but never all the time.
    Any ideas.

Tom, have you down loaded an app like "X Resource Graph", I think I got it at VersionTracker, which will tell you what fan is running at high enoug rpm's to generate noise. Plus it will give you cpu usage and temps plus hard drive temps. If its the cpu fan and the cpu is really working, go to the Activity Monitor in the utilities file and see what app is causing the problem. I don't know what to do if it's the hard drive or system fan. My system fan rarely goes over 1800 rpm, my hard drive stays between 2000 and 2200 but my cpu fan will accelerate when its under pressure to to over 3000 rpm. I just start hearing the cpu fan when it gets to 2400 rpm.

  • T61 fan runs all the time on AC, does not when on battery

    Hello,
with the lastest BIOS (and those before) my T61's (8889)  fan runs all the time when it is AC powered. (After initial start it begins with 0, then ~2500 rpm, then ~3100 rpm and then stays there even if idle).
When on battery under the same circumstances, it doesn't go above ~2500rpm (which is far less noisy then the ~3100rpm level) and often it even stops.
As far as the BIOS settings allow, it is trimmed to max. power saving also when AC powered but still it's getting on my nerves.
Can Lenovo please look into this and make it as quiet as it is on battery also when on AC?
P.S. I cannot see that the temperature levels as reported through ACPI are any higher on AC then on battery, so I don't understand why the fan has to run all the time that loud when on AC.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
There are two options for you to consider:
    1) Better CPU speed management:
    - Install a utility called "RMClock" to better manage the CPU (it's a free utility that throttles the CPU to run at different speeds depending on the needs - the CPU speeds increase automatically to full power when required).
    - By regulating the CPU speed, the fan will not need to work that often to expell hot air, because the CPU generates much less heat.
    - you will find a quick "how-to" for using RMClock --> HERE
    2) BIOS thermal management
    - You can change the BIOS settings for the "thermal management" (enter BIOS, choose "Config", then "Thermal Management" ) . Change the fan control from "performance" to "battery optimized" under the "plugged-in" option. This will reduce the frequency with which the fan runs, but beware that if your system is plugged in and you're not using any CPU management - meaning that your CPU is running at full speed, then the system will heat up more than you'll be comfortable with!!
I would therefore suggest that you use a CPU throttling management utility (like RMClock mentioned above) together with the thermal management option in your BIOS. This will reduce the frequency with which the fan starts and operates but still keeping the system cool.
A completely different approach is to install and use "Thinkpad Fan Control" -- read this thread ... Be aware that the utility takes a lot of tweaking to get the settings right, but also be aware that you can damage your system if you do not make the right settings!!!
    Hope this helps!
