Konify3D: generate random(ish) 3D desktop backgrounds using povray
Some of you might remember konify. This is a 3D version of it using povray.
I've created a page for this on my site (in the "Other Stuff" area): http://xyne.archlinux.ca/artwork/konify3d
You can get the latest version of the povray file that I'm using there. I've tried to arrange "options" near the top of the file and most of them will hopefully be self-explanatory (e.g. Aspect_Ratio).
Here are some output examples. I haven't even begun to look into surface and texture settings yet so hopefully there will be more to come. There might be more examples on the page above because I can update that automatically.

Generating Random Alpha numeric Salt String using MD5 or other algorithm

I have a requirement where i need to generate a random alpha numeric salt for MD5 algorithm. Is there a best way to generate this salt ?
The alpha numerics should confine to 5 digits with possible values for each digit being (a-z), (0-9), (A-Z).
Any good random generator for salt would be appreciated.

Desktop background settings won't hold
I use a folder of pictures to rotate randomly as my desktop background image. Whenever I restart the computer, the background image defaults to the purple-ish Snow Leopard background -- the one that looks sort of like a purple sunrise. I then have to open the Desktop/Screensaver preference pane and re-designate the folder with the pics in it. After that, it works perfectly -- until I restart. Then I have to go through the same drill.
I tried deleting the User>Library>Preferences>desktop.plist file but that didn't help. Still the same problem.

Issue with desktop Opt/Click (right click) & 'Change Desktop Background'
I have an issue with the opt/click in the desktop in ML 10.8.2. The 'Change Desktop Background' using opt/click (right click) works after reboot, but fails to open (work correctly) thereafter. The 'System Preferences' icon bounces in the dock but nothing else happens, I have either click on the SP icon or re-opt/click (R click) again to get it working. All else seems to be in order but not this. I have tried this with 2 complete full installs & still doesn't work correctly (same issue. I have reported it to Apple, but I was wondering if anyone else experiencing this problem?
So, here's what I've learned so far.
Fresh reboot. Works fine. Close and try again, doesn't work. This you already know.
Here's what I tried to see if it makes a difference:
I removed:
~/Library/Caches
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.*, com.apple.systempreferences.* and com.apple.desktop.*
That didn't help.
I tried it in safe mode. Same issue.
Here's something interesting I noticed. If you open terminal and killall Finder, that refreshes it and makes it work again... for 1 try.
This does, in fact, seem like a bug.
For reference, I'm currently on a mid 2012 macbook pro. Running fully updated on mt lion. -
I'm trying to hook up my Macbook Pro to my TV. I'm using the 'mini-display port to female HDMI" adapter. all i can see is my desktop background. no folders or icons and when i play a movie it goes blank.
Drag applications from your main desktop off the right side of the screen and they will appear on the TV. This is the extended desktop mode.

Using screensaver images as desktop background
how can I find the images from the screensavers that came with the mbp? I would like to use them as my desktop background.
To be clear, on a Mac, a "screen saver" is the moving images (or static) that display on a screen after a few minutes of inactivity, if so setup to do that.
A "desktop picture" is the non-moving image you setup for the background of your screen. In the PC world, it's called a "wallpaper" and some mistakenly call it a "screen saver"-- I know, because a lot of PC users I know call it such.
So two answers to your question:
1) If you are trying to find the desktop picture to change your background, go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES > DESKTOP & SCREEN SAVER and then choose the DESKTOP PICTURE tab and select away. You can even drag and drop a photo/image to the box on the screen to set it as your Desktop Picture.
2) If you want to use an image from a screen saver on the Mac, you can, while the screen saver is active, take a screenshot of the screen saver by pressing the following key commands: SHIFT + COMMAND + 3. The image will appear on your desktop to which you can then drag and drop it to the box in the Desktop Picture tab in the previous instruction.
Note that you can even create a folder of collected images and select that folder in the System Preferences pane of Desktop & Screen Saver and all the images will be available to choose.

How do you generate random data info using json and spry?
I have a mobile applicaton that uses spry datasets that dynamically populate a jquery mobile listview by using a json file. Everything is operating as it should.
However, I would like to understand how to pull random objects from the json file to have them displayed on a different page.
My json file is standard and not complicated. It has several levels. Each is represented as below:

Json file Level1 has about 70 objects
What I would like to do is randomly load one of the Level1 object arrays into the page when the user selects a Level 1 radio button that is on the screen. I know how to create the page, radio buttons and basics, but just don't know how to pull in the random data.
I've found one code sample on this site that speaks to spry and xml, but I haven't been able to apply it in any way that works for me with the json file:

-RachelI've done similar things before. A few thoughts for you:
1. I'm assuming you're doing a buffered period or frequency measurement on the incoming encoder pulses, right? First key point is that you'll have data that is spaced equally in position, but not equally in time. If you are looking for a time-based FFT such that increasing speed will shift your spectrum, you're going to need to go through an interpolation process to resample your data as though equally-spaced in in time.
2. Your 149 pulse per rev encoder may be a significant source of error unless its 149 pulses are placed with extreme accuracy. Any error in pulse placement violates your underlying assumption of data that is equally-spaced in position. It'll be very helpful to send your data through a software lowpass filter to attenuate those artifacts.
3. I am not sure what you mean by "decompose the buffered data (array) into a single datastream." You'll get an array of periods / frequencies from the call to DAQmx Read. If you want to use it in a LabVIEW waveform datatype, you'll first need to do the resampling to create equally-spaced-in-time data. The LabVIEW waveform datatype (and all the analysis functions like FFT that use it) depend on receiving data with a fixed constant time interval between samples.

You can't go to System Preferences>Desktop&Screen Savers and change the display? Try it and see. I've never seen that problem.

Using Photos (iPhoto) as Desktop Background and system startup time
I've been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why my iMac is taking longer and longer to boot (mostly after software updates).
My stopwatch shows a little over 3 minutes from chimes until there is a usable UI.
Through process of elimination, I finally found the problem. We have over 24,000 pictures in iPhoto, and like to cycle through them as the desktop background. The problem with wanting to do this is OSX seems to have to enumerate through all 24,000 before it selects a "startup background", which takes around 2.25 minutes. Not bad, considering, but still an awful startup experience. I was starting to think I was running Vista or something.
Wondering if anyone else had run across this and if there was any known workaround, short of picking another style of desktop background?I keep my favorite photos in a separate wallpaper folder. I select my photo for the desktop manually, but I wonder if you could not set up a folder of favorites and rotate among these. Perhaps with fewer photos in a folder, your computer would not have to take so much time going through them all.

I have chosen to use a particular photo folder to use as desktop background for my Imac. I have also checked the "change image" and "random" boxes, every 30 minutes. As long as I keep the Imac running, everything is fine but as soon as for some reason, I reboot the computer, I get the original photo that came with Snow Leopard and I have to change the settings all over again as it had not remembered the information.
I have tried a few times to delete the finder's plist fife, to no avail. Is there something else I may try to try and fix it once and for all ?
thanksI just created a new admin account, applied the same desktop background settings as my regular account and then rebooted to the newly created account. I was surprised to find out that it's the exact same situation with the new account.

Cannot select landscape photos as a desktop background from iPhoto events.
In the desktop preferences screen, when choosing a desktop background, I am able to see all of the normal options at the left. However, when I choose an image from the "iPhoto Albums" section, only vertically oriented images work. Landscape-oriented images don't update to the background (I get the basic Apple Blue.)
It appears to randomly effect my iPhoto albums, as some events have the problem, some do not, regardless of date of event or camera used.
When I add a folder and select the file manually (from the option at the bottom of the list), I have no problems... all images look fine.
I should also add that I do not allow iPhoto to manage my images, I manage my Photos folder and have the "Copy photos into the iPhotos library" option turned OFF.
I'm not sure if this is an iPhoto '08 problem or a Leopard problem, as I upgraded both at the same time during a fresh install.
PS - I've done most of the other trouble shooting things on Apple's support site, like creating a new iPhoto album and reimporting known problem-images, fixing permissions, re-creating the albumdata.xml file, etc. I even removed special characters from the Event Names and reset my keywords (I wasn't using them, anyway...)
Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion, but it did not fix the problem. Since the general population uses iPhoto with the "copy files to the iphoto library" option turned ON, I decided to offload my images to an external drive and create a new library on my laptop, letting iPhoto do the organizing. (This is a big step for me, being an ex-windows user!)
A sample of images imported to the new iPhoto library seemed to register fine with the finder. Changing desktop images in the desktop prefs panel worked fine. All seems well and I'm looking forward to not having to manage the image folders and simply letting iPhoto import directly from the SD cards I use in my DSLR...

I can't seem to get through an import session without Leopard crashing on me. I get the dreaded dark-gray waterfall and the "please restart your computer" message in 65 different languages. Admittedly, I'm importing 5000+ images from an external FW800 drive, but still!
So here's my question to y'all:
Do I start importing a folder at a time and keep my fingers crossed, or should I consider a fix more drastic (like re-installing iPhoto?) Does this even sound like an iPhoto problem? Do I have a deeper issue (like a bad install of Leopard?) Or, is this just early-adopter syndrome with brand-new versions of iLife and Leopard, and I need to deal with it until Apple patches the holes?
I've had this system crash on me 5 times in the last three days, and it's getting old. What is this, Vista? -
Flickering Desktop Background Yosemite
Hello!
I have a 15" MacBook Pro early 2011, recently upgraded OS X to Yosemite 10.10.1,
Specs: Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7; Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3; Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB.
I was working with Word and suddenly the keyboard stopped responding. Since then the desktop background has been flickering on and off and applications are working erratically. I´ve tried to fix it by restarting the computer, resetting PRAM, using Terminal to killall Finder, changing the Dashboard setting to Off in System Preferences, and none of these have worked.
I believe it is a problem with the user, since I am able to use my computer if I log in as a guest user.
Is this a bug? How can I fix this?
