Labview interaction with MATLAB

Hi,
I'm working with Matlab script in labview.
i have both Matlab6.5 and Matlab7.0 on the PC.
i have changed the matscript.dll file as requested to work with Matlab6 or later.
i need to work with the Matlab7.0 but the Labview is going to the Labview 6.5 always.
how can i direct Labview to work with the Matlab7.0 (without uninstalling the 6.5)??

Hi Idan,
perhaps this can help you:
Please make a backup of your registry before trying this!
- open regedit
- go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Matlab.Application\CLSID and look at the ID provided
- Cross reference that key to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID and see which executable is getting run
- Change the CLSID in the first path to reference MATLAB 7.0
- close regedit

  • Help! Can't open Labview program with MATLAB codes !!!

They used to work! But today I just can't open any LabView program with MATLAB codes in. This also happened some time ago, but after a day I tried again, it went back to normal. Can anyone help me fix it? Many thanks !!!

    Hello BLpig,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding problems opening a VI. It sounds like a VI containing MATLAB code will not open in LabVIEW. This problem can happen when using LabVIEW 7 on a Windows 2000 machine. Assuming this is your setup, the following link is a great resource when dealing with this issue.

  • Who can i make a set-reset flip-flop with labview interacting with for cycle outputs

Who can i make a set-reset flip-flop with labview interacting with for cycle outputs

Are you wanting a VI that emulates a RS filp flop, or do you have a question about using an actual one?
You can make a RS flip flop by knowing the 4 states:
    R=0, S=0, Q=no change
    R=0, S=1, Q=1
    R=1, S=0, Q=0
    R=1, S=1, Q=?(invalid condition)

  • Math Interface Toolkit in Matlab: Can I interact with a VI as a parallel process

I'm curious if it's possible to create a Matlab MEX file using the LabVIEW Math Interface Toolkit (MIT) that can be called in matlab and accessed while running?
I'd like it to effectively work just like any other object in matlab.  I'd like to be able to query the object while it's running, dump values out of a buffer, and even hook events if possible.
As it currently stands, the VI to MEX setup seems to just allow me to call a VI, run it, and then drop out.  I want to be able to continuously acquire and access the data as it's coming in and interact with it from matlab (i.e. fully integrate the VI into my matlab code as a separate object).
Is this possible in some form or am I stuck with dedicating the matlab interface to the VI whenever I want to call it?
    Thanks

    Hi GusLott,
You are correct that when you call a VI the command line will not continue until the output is obtained.  This makes sense since in LabVIEW that is how a VI operates (a subVI does not ouput until all outputs are obtained).  I believe this is also how commands in MATLAB work as well (correct me if I am wrong).  On the otherhand this is not a disadvantage in labVIEW since you can run VIs in parallel.  If you can create some way to run parallel threads in MATLAB then you will be able to do two (or more) MEX calls at once.
As far as object oriented programming goes, there is a labVIEW OOP, but I do not think it has been tested in conjuction with the Math Interface Toolkit.

  • Creating .mat files with Matlab dataplugin in LabVIEW

I am trying to create a .mat file in LabVIEW using the Matlab dataplugin. It appears to create a group called "Vector" without being told to, and it also concatenates group and channel names together. I have made an example to demonstrate this behaviour. I am trying to create a group called "Group" and inside it a channel called "Channel". What I get looks like a group called "Vector" and inside it a channel called "GroupChannel". What am I doing wrong?

    Hello John
Thank you for getting in touch regarding your issue. I am an applications engineer here at National Instruments, as I understand you are using the data plugin for Matlab within LabVIEW, but as shown with your code when you label the channel or group you get an outcome which you don't expect.
I have opened and had a look at your code and can see where the issue is arising. The functions you are using are normally used with TDM files, .MAT files are compatible but there are a few differences between the file formats, which is why you are getting the outcome we have seen. A TDM file has headers named channelgroup and channel, but Matlab does not have the channelgroup header in the file type and therefore the functions in LabVIEW merge the 2 strings to the available header.
I am not able to open your .MAT file so could you give me a brief description of what occurs inside Matlab?
Have you looked into using the script node to allow for .MAT file types in LabVIEW? Here is the help file
I have also found some resources which you may find useful.

  • Creating a DLL in labview that interacts with a DLL in C++

I’m creating a DLL in LabView that will interact with a DLL created in C++. I don’t have control in the C++ DLL.
Both DLLs would pass a big amount of data as strings between them, for that it is necessary to allocate memory to store information in one dll and read it in the other and viceversa. The first time I will call the other DLL,  with this function :
long in texts ( unsigned char *name, void *id)
I would pass them a pointer pointer to an ASCII string  (name) and a pointer to an unspecific data structure (id). The id would then be passed to me by his DLL whenever they use one of the functions implemented on my dll.
What I don’t know is what to pass as a void*id? What are they expecting? A number? A cluster?
The other thing I don’t know is how to allocate memory in labview and write there information, such as a string, and then tell the other DLL to look for the information at that DLL, and viceversa. I hope I made my self clear, hope somebody can help me, and please indicate me if you need more information

    Hello Osvaldo,

My problem is really HOW TO CREATE THE DLL IN LV8.6. In the link http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3063 there is detailed information about how to do this in LV6.x, the problem is that I don't find the path Tools»Build Application or Shared Library (DLL) in LV8.6, I think the procedure in LV8.6 is a little bit different. Don´t you have an updated tutorial on how to build a dll in LV8.6?How could you help me?

  • Interacting with a compiled LABView executable from another VI

I'm using a piece of hardware that has it's driver executable written in LABView. I would like to interact with it from the inside of my own VI. There's no dedicated LABView driver and I don't have access to the source code. Communication happens over USB. The particular functionality that I need is changing one numeric control, which governs the current that's provided.
Could someone help me with this in any way?
If that matters, I'm using LV2013.

Was the exe built with VI Server/ActiveX enabled? If so, all you need is a set control value method. If your company was the one that commissioned the exe, for a small cost the vendor can enable this option and rebuild it. If you did commission it, you should have required the source code in the contract.
Other options include using something like AutoIT. You could also turn on NI-Spy/I/O Trace and capture all of the VISA commands. Even though there might not be a driver, you should have a manual that you can read. Implementing a single command should be pretty trivial.

  • Interacting with labview with my own developed scritpting language.

    Hi all,
    I am Divya.
    My aim :
I need to develop a programing language to interact with Labview such that the script should call labview front panel, execute the given task and front panel shold give back the result to the script.
I want to achieve this by using my own developed programing language (Valid reasons are there why not to use already exixting scripts which I dont want to discuss here as it is not relevant).
    My idea :
As developing a new scripting language is a big task I am planning to start with Python scripting. I am trying to interact with labview using python script for now.
    My problem :
As I am fresher to this field I dont know the possible ways to interact with Labview using python scripting. (Except using Labpython). If there is any way to achieve this please guide me on this.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Dennis_Knutson
I am doing the same as the original question I have asked. As I have mentioned in my question I am starting off with a small addition (or any basic mathematical operation) function using Python script.
And yes the basic idea is to call Labview from script not the vice versa. To achieve this I need to pass the parameters from the python script to Labview and output from Labview to Python. For this purpose I am developing a small VI which vil take Python commands and carry on furthur operations.
I can explain with an example.
I have a command in python as sum=x+y. I want to take this command and send 'x' to a numeric control, 'y' to another numeric control and 'sum' to a numeric indicator and at the same time back to script. In between numeric controls 'x' and 'y' I need to carry out '+' operation. Say if the command is sum=x-y I need to carry out '-' operation(Where identifying '+' or '-' or any other operation is the job of labview).
I have developed a VI which can take the command from python and give it to Labview as a string. I need to know how to bifurcate that string to numeric controls, operands etc.

  • Load Labview runtime engine with matlab platform

When I use labview DLL on matlab platform it loads labview runtime engine.
Once I use "close all" command of matlab, labview runtime engine is not available any more so I want to reload it.
    How can I do this?
If I run the DLL again an error is occurred.
    Best regards,
    Nir

    Hello Nir,
I recommend contacting MathWorks for assistance with the exact functionality and results of close all. Based on online documentation for calling DLLs in MATLAB, you should use unloadlibrary to remove the LabVIEW DLL from memory instead of close all. If you use this method, are you able to load the LabVIEW DLL (using the loadlibrary function) and call it successfully from MATLAB?

  • Labview 2011 FDS (64bit) crashes when saving a vi with MATLAB node

After running a vi which includes a MATLAB node, the vi cannot be saved, because Labview crashes every time with error: "DAbort 0x1A7102DF in fpsane.cpp".
Why does a MATLAB node with simple array I/O corrupt LABVIEW's sanity ???
I have attached a minimum configuration, which gives a reliable crash. First run, then push save.

did anybody could solve or got a work arround this problem?
I am getting the same error code when I use the Call Library Function to call external DLLs in my application.
I am using the following system configuration:
    - Windows 7 32bit with SP1
    - LabVIEW PDS 2011 32bit
Additionally to this error I am getting the following message (Ausnahme: Access violation (0xC0000005) bei EIP=0x00C0503F) (see attachments)
Note: calling the same DLLs using previous LabVIEW versions (8.2) works fine.
When such errors happen in an application that uses the Call Library Node, you can be almost certain that it is a problem in how the Call Library Node was configured (wrong!) or a bug in the DLL. That you happen to see this error, only means that the external code happend to overwrite memory that it was not supposed to do, and that memory happened to be some data structure that LabVIEW uses to represent some front panel element. That it didn't happen in 8.2 doesn't mean that it didn't have that error there too, only that it overwrote some different memory location, that had unluckily for you no visible consequences.
For all other cases with no Call Library Node included, it means that the VIs front panel resource got somehow damaged (and yes this could also happen from running the VI in an application with misbehaving Call Library Node, and then saving the VI). The most easy solution is to rewrite the VI, another option is to try to force a recompile with the Ctrl button pressed and then activating the run button in the VI toolbar. Other than that there is little we normal users can do. The only people who can do more here are the LabVIEW developers who can look inside the VI and identify the damaged data structure and repair it, but that is a lot of work and time, and NI doesn't commit to doing this normally.

  • How to output data when converting labview vi into matlab mex functions

    Hi,
I am a fairly new user to labview and am currently working on labview
7.1. I have created a labview vi which can extract data from ni daq
6070e in real time. The problem is that this code has to be converted
so that it can be used with matlab.in order to do that i am using math
interactive tool kit which converts the labview code into mex files
which can then be used in matlab. Unfortunately i have not been able to
figure out how to output this data so that it can be processed in
matlab easily. i cannot afford any loss of information and all the
output must happen in real time. the o/p must take place after the fft
has been done. i am attaching the vi for convenience. There are 10
broken wires ,and this is the place where i want the o/p to be
    generated.
Also do let me know if this vi can be further improved.

    Manuj,
You seem to have misunderstood the way in which LabVIEW processes data.  The code that you have produced will run in exactly the same way without the need for the case structure.
The code does not actually run the data from the previous case. It is merely processing data from the previous loop iteration, regardless of the case. If you were to remove the case structure, leaving only one copy of the code intact, and remove the toggle switch you have produced, or used the shift register which, I assure you would have worked, then you will have exactly the same functionality.
I have attached an example that uses the shift register to toggle cases, but also iterates that the case structure is not needed by using the same feedback node (and code) without a toggle switch or case structure.
Hope this helps you optimize your code

  • Display and interact with a vi front panel on remote C++ app

    Hello:
I am new to LV and need a little advice.  I need to display a LabVIEW VI front panel in my C++ .Net application that users can interact with to view real-time spectrum data.  The C++ app (client) must reside on a separate computer(s) from the VI so that the client can connect from anywhere around the world and interact with the VI.
I am not sure about the basic architecture that should accompany a good solution.  We want to use TCP/IP but not DataSocket.  I do not have access to Measurement Studio but I do have access to LabVIEW Professional Development System v 8.2.  Can anyone provide suggestions on what I need to do in order to
    1.  Connect to my TCP server using my C++ client app - I have already written TCP client and server code which communicate but now I need to integrate LV
    2.  Get access to the VI sitting on that server
    3.  Send the VI front panel to the client for display
    4.  Allow the user to modify parameters on the front panel displayed on the C++ client, send those changes back to the server, and refresh the front panel displayed in the C++ client given the new parameters (I would like a real-time display of the spectrum to always be available)
Is this possible?  Has anyone done this using C++ .NET in VS2005?  Are there examples I can mimic or references that will help direct me?  I have searched and searched through NI's help and found a lot of good stuff but I'm still feeling confused about the best way to utilize LV.
    Thank you in advance!

One more question ... what if I could use Measurement Studio?  The documentation seems to indicate that it's easy to create network applications and therefore it would be easy for me to re-create our VI's front panel using Measurement Studio components in my C++ app and then simply connect those components to the networked hardware (TCP/IP or DataSocket) that could be located anywhere in the world.
Depending on what components you are using in your LabVIEW panel, it is probably pretty easy to build a Measurment Studio application to look like a LV panel.
Given that, you could use network shared variables to move data across the network, no TCP programming necessary -- I think that this is pretty easy to do, but I don't know the specifics about variable programming in that environment.  Also, you will probably need to add some smarts to the server side to make sure that it is reading to and writing from variables in an appropriate manner.
Question: why can't you just use LabVIEW for the client application also?

  • New LabHSM Toolkit - Agile development of complex event-driven maintainable LabVIEW applications with active objects / actors based on a universal Hierarchical State Machine / statechart template.

    Dear Fellow LabVIEW programmers:
Most of the systems you deal with are reactive. It means that their
primary function is constant interaction with their environment by
sending and receiving events. But most likely, they can have something
happening inside them too, even when they are not processing messages
received from outside. So, such systems have to continuosly react to
external and internal stimuli. Right? Moreover, most likely, they
consist of subsystems that are reactive too and, in turn, can have
their own "life", to an extent independent from other parts (with
which they still communicate, of course). Reactive (event-driven)
systems are more naturally modeled with active objects. So, why then
should we try to model and code them with GOOP and its passive
    ("dead"!) objects?
"Flat" State Machines have been known for decades to have severe
limitations. It's been more than 20 years since Dr. Harel invented
Hierarchical State Machines (statecharts) to fight those limitations.
Then why does NI still tout the same old good Moore FSM as the
ultimate tool for event-driven programming in LabVIEW in its $995
    State Diagram KIt?
The LabHSM toolkit we are happy to present, makes it possible to
easily create and then maintain complex event-driven applications in
LabVIEW as a collection of HSM-driven active object VIs using a higher
level of abstraction and agile software development methodologies.
These active object VIs are created based on a universal Hierarchical
State Machine ( HSM or statechart ) template. So. all your code looks
    similar regardless of its functionality!
We all love just jump to code, right? However, to be good boys, we
need to do design first. Then implement it in code. If the logic is
modified we need to redo the design first and then redo the code. When
using LabHSM where behavior information is abstracted into a separate
HSM data file editable with a supplied editor, there is no need for
coding separate from design any more. The modified behavior becomes
code automatically as soon as the HSM file is saved. Design is code!
The implementation basically follows Dr. Samek's Quantum Programming
paradigm. (see http://www.quantum-leaps.com). However, as already
mentioned, LabHSM stores the behavior information in a file separate
from the code itself. It also adds state dependent priorities to
events, a separate queue for public events/messages, and, of course,
some LabVIEW specific code like capturing front panel user events and
putting them into the private Events queue. Communication and
instantiation functions are also rather specific for LabVIEW.
It is available for UNLIMITED PERIOD trial. Please visit
http://www.labhsm.com for details and download. The site also contains
references which you may want to check to learn more about
hierarchical state machines and active object computing.
Since this is our debut we will appreciate any comments and
suggestions. Our contact information is available on our site, of
    course.

  • TCP/IP communication with Matlab

Since LabVIEW unwisely depends on Microsoft only constructs to communicate with Matlab, has anybody succeeded in piping commands/data from a LabVIEW session running on a Mac / Linux to a Matlab session running on the same machine ? Use of MathScript is not an option since MathScript does not have all the toolboxes and more critically, does not offer a programmatic way of saving plots (the print command).

Yes, Microsoft has provided COM tools for the MAC OS. This article provides a brief overview.
Also, LabVIEW has a number of tools for configuring and programmtically printing and saving plots. I do not believe it appropriate to discuss notions of platform superiority. I simply would like you and future forum readers to be aware of the tools available in LabVIEW for plotting tasks:

p.s.: got a few probs with understanding how to write a program.

    Hi YZ,
What you are trying to accomplish sounds very interesting. Using LabVIEW instead of MATLAB has its strengths and weaknesses, but for teaching purpose LabVIEW has obvious advantages in its intuitive dataflow environment.
However, LabVIEW and MATLAB doesn't share all the same functions, so there might be cases where a simple function in MATLAB is equivalent to code with multiple functions in LabVIEW. This might be the case for the MATLAB freqz function.
You mention that when using the DFD Get Freq Response, the "output graphs are sometimes vastly different than the MATLAB counter part." Please let me know what you mean with "different". If possible, please provide a screenshot of a MATLAB graph showing the expected behavior, and the result from LabVIEW.
With this added information, I should be able to give you some valuable results.
